Marjorie Arnold Schapiro

MOUNT HOPE — Marjorie Arnold Schapiro, 85, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Nov. 25, 1921, at Skelton, she was the daughter of the late Denver and Lena Mae Bailey Arnold.

Mrs. Schapiro was a homemaker.

Margie was a well known doll collector and antique dealer in Maryland and Fayette County. She was loved and will be greatly missed by many friends in Mount Hope and her adopted family at Carpetbaggers in Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Schapiro; a son, David Schapiro; sisters, Hester Burgess and Edith Roberts; and a brother, Fred Arnold.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Schapiro and wife, Lori, of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter, Sue Gallagher and husband, Charlie, of Lenni, Pa.; daughter-in-law, Darlene Schapiro of Reisterstown, Md.; sisters, Ruby Wolfe of Seivering, Fla., and Doris Carlile of Madison, Ala.; several nieces and nephews, including Fred Arnold and wife, Barbara, of Shady Spring, Linda Arnold and husband, John Catselis, of Charleston and Paula Arnold and husband, Clint Matthews, of Virginia City, Mont.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.

Per her wishes, Mrs. Schapiro was cremated. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronnie Stapleton officiating.

Ivan Ellis Sizemore

RONCEVERTE — Ivan Ellis Sizemore, 79, passed away Monday, April 9, 2007.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Lewisburg. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Lewisburg.

James W. Surbaugh

James Warren Surbaugh, 72, of Fairlea, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the home of a very dear friend in Crab Orchard following a short illness.

Born Feb. 17, 1935, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Kirby Otto Surbaugh and Chloe F. Shires Surbaugh.

Mr. Surbaugh was a former employee of Kaiser Aluminum and Colony Drug Store.

He was a member of First Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Surbaugh, and brother-in-law, Eli “Bo” Egich.

Survivors include daughters, Debra Jane Hussell of Point Pleasant and Pamela Sue Gaines of Raleigh, N.C.; brother, Robert Surbaugh of Lewisburg; sister, Betty Sue Egich of Beckley; and grandchildren, Andrea Leigh Hussell of Huntington, Andrew Jacob Hussell of Point Pleasant and Dylan Tyler Gaines and Drake Lewis Gaines of Raleigh, N.C. Also surviving is a special friend and caregiver, Evelyn Moses of Crab Orchard.

There will be no service or visitation.

Rebecca Pauline Underwood

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — Rebecca Pauline Underwood, 79, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at her home.

She was born Oct. 7, 1927 in Beaver. She had been a resident of Panama City Beach for six months, moving here from Daniels. She was a member of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church and was active in the Republican Party in Daniels.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William H. Underwood Sr.

She is survived by two sons, Bill Underwood and wife, Marykate, of Panama City Beach and Bob Underwood and wife, Debbie, of Vancleave, Miss.; five grandchildren, Rebecca Underwood of Lady Lake, Fla., Caitlin Underwood and Liam Underwood, both of Panama City Beach, and Bobbie Anne Underwood and Robert Underwood II, both of Vancleave; sister, Joann Fritz and husband, Kenneth, of Daniels; a brother, Ira Bryant of Detroit, Mich.; special nephew, Clint Fritz and wife, Amy; niece, Libby Thompson and husband, Butch, of Beaver; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at a later date in Beckley.

Those desiring may make a contribution to the Building Fund of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church.

May Dell Hudson Washington, 89, of 4172 Harper Road, Eccles, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 20,1918, in New Falls, Ala.

Mrs. Washington was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Washington.

Survivors include her stepchildren, Herbert Saunders (Proxy) of Chicago, Ill, Ruby Berry of Beckley, Betty Stewart of Beckley and Lois Saunders of New Jersey; niece and caregiver, Yvonne Donahue of Kernersville, N.C.; great-niece, Sonia Donahue of Detroit, Mich.; great-great-niece, Kalen Donahue of Detroit; great-nephew, Rickey Donahue of Detroit; friends, Quemiller Adams of Southport, N.C., Mary Reid of Skelton, Mattie Bolling of Columbus, Ohio, and Elese Harris of Beckley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be noon Thursday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Rudolph Poindexter officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Thursday at the funeral parlor.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Ballard Baker, 80, of Barkers Ridge, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Edna Iris Bane

Edna Iris Bane, 77, of Lynco, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Heartland of Beckley following a short illness.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, in the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Elder Jerry Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the McDonald cemetery on Crouch’s Farm. Friends may call from noon Monday until time of the service.

Allie May Cantrell

WHARNCLIFFE — Allie May Cantrell, 102, died Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Ben Creek Pentecostal Church of God, Wharncliffe. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Pearl S. Carter

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Pearl S. Carter, 87, died April 20, 2007.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs. Friends may call 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Arnold Isaac Eller

Arnold Isaac Eller, age 76, of Crab Orchard, passed away April 19, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Feb. 26, 1931, he was the son of the late Isaac and Tina Martin Eller.

He was retired from United Airlines and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the V.F.W. of Midway.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernie Eugene Eller.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Frieda Eller of Crab Orchard; sons Derek Eller of Raleigh, N.C., and Douglas Eller of Sophia; a brother, Donald Ray Eller of Crab Orchard, and two sisters, Velma Taylor of Beckley and Jo Ann Morano of Cincinnati, Ohio, also survive him.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia.

Beatrice Mary Eads Jacobowski

FAYETTEVILLE — Beatrice Mary Eads Jacobowski, 93, of Rt. 1, died on Friday, April 20, 2007, at her home.

Born April 20, 1914, at Page, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Wilsie Sowder Eads.

Mrs. Jacobowski was a member of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at Lochgelly, and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Jacobowski, on June 1, 1995; sisters, Florence Farrish and Glenna Farms; brothers, Clifford Eads, Walter Eads, Herman Eads, Jack Eads and Clarence Eads.

Survivors include two sons, Galen Franklin of South Carolina and Charles Jacobowski Jr. of Oak Hill; five daughters, Grace F. Rudd of Page, Sue Jenkins of Scarbro, Judy Addis of Michigan, Kay Turner of Oak Hill and Annette Jacobowski Foster of Rt. 1, Fayetteville; two sisters, Stella Hinson of California and Virginia Burdette of Dunbar; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill with Pastor Jerry Bush and the Rev. Winston O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Florence ‘Flo’ Cooper Maliszka

WAYNE — Florence “Flo” Cooper Maliszka, 87, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Hospice House of Huntington.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Charles McMahan

BALLARD — Charles McMahan, age 72, of Ballard, formerly of Pembroke, Va., passed away Friday, April 20, 2007, at his home.

He was born Nov. 6, 1934, at Ballard, and was the son of the late Dewey and Mattie Mann McMahan.

Mr. McMahan was a fire and safety superintendent at Celanese Corp for 36 years, was a member of the John Dove Lodge No. 78 AF & AM in Peterstown, a Korean Veteran, serving in the Elite 82nd Airborne Division as Jumpmaster and was made a lifetime member in the 82nd Airborne Division Historical Society.

Mr. McMahan was a member of the Calvary Christian church, Pembroke, Va.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Dunbar McMahan.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Hill McMahan; one daughter, Kim Marsh and husband David of Stafford, Va.; one son, John McMahan and wife Crystal of Pembroke, Va.; five grandsons, Jonathan and Joshua Marsh, and Riley, Ross and Reid McMahan.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2007, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Rev. David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens cemetery, Rich Creek, Va. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday, April 21, 2007, at the funeral home.
