Louise Mandy Smith Mullins

PINEVILLE — Louise Mandy Smith Mullins, 89, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Heartland of Beckley.

Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, is serving the Mullins family.

Wanda R. Pence

WELCH — Wanda R. Pence, 79, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Fanning Funeral Home, Welch. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Larry Wayne Richmond

Larry “Fuzzy” Richmond, 59, of Beckley, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born March 6, 1947, he was the son of Charles and Eva Richmond, who preceded him in death, along with his youngest brother, Richard.

Larry worked as an electrician most of his life until he suffered an injury that left him disabled. He enjoyed a close network of friends and family and all of them would agree that they “broke the mold after they made Fuzzy.” He was kind, generous and often entertaining.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Donna Richmond of Surveyor; his brother, Darrell Richmond and wife, Eva, of Mabscott; his sister, Janice Angle and husband, Mike, of Sophia; his son, Randy Richmond and Stephanie of Prince; three beloved granddaughters Kitiara and Raven Richmond and Autumn Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews and many special and dear friends.

In accordance with his wishes, Larry will be cremated and no public service will be held. Private service will be held by family and friends at fishing holes and short tracks in the years to come.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Shaffer

Louise Williams Vipperman Shaffer, of Crab Orchard, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, in a Beckley care center following a short illness. She was 84 years of age.

Edwin Ray Shupe

HINTON — Edwin Ray Shupe, 87, of 1012 Terrace St., passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Summers County ARH following a long illness.

Born Feb. 9, 1919, in Edmonds, N.C., he was the son of the late Malcolm and Eva Rector Shupe of Galax, Va.

Ray was a loyal member of the Miller Memorial Methodist Church in Bellepoint. He retired from Virginia Electric Power with 38 years of service, being transferred to Hinton from Buena Vista, Va., in 1970. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, having fought in the South Pacific on Okinawa and Pelelieu. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 55 years, also a member of the Lions Club and Odd Fellows. Ray was also an avid fisherman and musician.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 63 years, Margaret Lynn Shupe; two daughters, Donna Jewell and husband, Mike, of Richmond, Va., and Susan Carden and husband, Steve, of Front Royal, Va.; two granddaughters, Hillary Chojnacki and husband, Richard, of Sarasota, Fla., and Hayden Roberts of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandsons, Reed and Drew Carden; two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Skylar Chojnacki, both of Sarasota; two special granddaughters in England, Justine and Katy; two brothers, Danny and Benny Shupe of Galax, Va.; four sisters, Ella McMillam, Peggy Bryant, Clare Shupe and Bonnie Blackburn, all of Galax; special sister-in-law, Shirley Lynn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 7 p.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Ken Stockwell and the Rev. Eugene Fullen officiating. Interment will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Fairview cemetery, Buchanan, Va.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LINDSIDE — Anna Mae Spangler, 88, of Ormond Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Bernice J. Billings

MATOAKA — Bernice J. Billings, 79, of Thompson Hill, passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bertha Prater Bradford

WHARNCLIFFE — Bertha Prater Bradford, 79, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Faith Church of God.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Lawrence E. Burgess Jr.

OAK HILL — Lawrence E. Burgess Jr., 66, of Oak Hill, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at the Beckley VA Hospital.

Herbert ‘Boy’ Carter Jr.

On Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, Herbert “Boy” Carter Jr. of Fairdale passed away at his home. He was 72 years of age.

Known affectionately as “Boy” all his life, Herbert was the eldest son and one of 12 children born to the late Herbert and Opal Beckelhimer Carter. He was born at Eccles on Aug. 20, 1934.

Herbert spent his early childhood at Eccles. A resident of Fairdale since 1945, he was of the Christian faith. Herbert retired from the Southern Soil Conservation District.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Howard (Herby) Carter; and two brothers, Jack and John Carter.

Survivors include two sons, Randy and Kenny Carter; six brothers, Bill Carter and his wife, Gladys, Robert Carter and his wife, Juanita, Buster Carter and his wife, Drema, and David Carter, all of Fairdale, Jerl Carter and his wife, Janet, and Benny Carter and his wife, Betty, all of Sebewaing, Michigan; three sisters, Betty Goode of Glen Daniel, Mary Maynard and her husband, Ronald, of Lester and Rosetta McMillion and her husband, Steve, of Fairdale; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Carter officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum at Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Lloyd Franklin Clark, Jr.

Lloyd Franklin Clark, Jr., 38, of Josephine, passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006.

Born June 19, 1968, he is the son of the late Lloyd Franklin Clark, Sr. and Hazel Vaughn Clark.

In addition to his parents, Lloyd is preceded in death by brother, Darrell Wayne Clark, and Tina Clark.

Those left to cherish his memory include Dora Clark; children, Amy Clark, David Clark, Brandon Clark; sisters, Betty Sue Hales of Eccles, Jeannie Akers of Fairdale, Brenda Royale; brothers, Teddy Clark of Eccles, Denny Clark of Coal City, Ricky Clark of Crab Orchard, Ronnie Clark of Eccles and Jimmy Clark and Debbie.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Hanna Lilly cemetery.

James Richard Coleman

FAYETTEVILLE — James Richard Coleman, 78, passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at the Fayette Nursing and Rehab Center, Fayetteville, where he made his home.

Born on Nov. 28, 1928, at Mossy, he was the son of the late Samuel H. Coleman and Pearl E. Ingram.

Mr. Coleman was a retired inspection tech for Republic Steel and he loved to fish, hunt and ginseng.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Pungen; and two brothers, Homer Coleman and Roy Thaddeus Coleman.

Survivors include four sisters, Thelma Baker of Lexington, OK, Dorothy Entsminger of Oak Hill, Mary Ann Tredway of Wixom, MI, and Carolyn O’Dell of Fayetteville; a brother, Ray Coleman of Navarre, Ohio; two special nieces, Linda Mitchell of Fayetteville and Delores Valdez of Bellmawr, NJ; and several other family members and friends.

Funeral service will be 12 noon Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Bob Coulter officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until noon Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at the funeral home.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sadie Marie Delozier

Sadie Marie Delozier, 78, formerly of Woodbridge, Va., and Whitesville, W.Va., passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at Fayetteville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville, W.Va. She was a patient of Hospice of Southern West Virginia for the past 14 months.

She was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. She was employed at Fort Belvoir, Va., as a time keeper and sorter for 20 years. After retiring from government service, she relocated to West Virginia.

Playing bingo was one of her favorite activities.

She is being remembered by her family, friends and caregivers as a unique, one-of-a-kind individual with a strong will, independence, determination and great sense of humor.

Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at the Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City, Va. A graveside service was held at Mount Comfort cemetery in Alexandria, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard F. Arrington.

She is survived by her five children, Susie, Sonny, Bobby, Bonnie and Connie; her brother, Jimmie and her three sisters, Nellie, Dollie and Bessie.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, 105 S. Eisenhower Dr., Beckley, WV 25801.

Elsie M. Friend

Elsie M. Friend, 83, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at her residence after a short illness.

Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

Dana Carol McClung

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Dana Carol McClung, 69, passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness.

Born Dec. 26, 1936, at Adair, she was the daughter of Tressie Pearl Adkins of Clay County and the late George Washington Adkins.

Mrs. McClung was a homemaker and a cook at various restaurants in the White Sulphur Springs area. She was a member of the White Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dale Alden McClung; and a sister, Gayla Elaine Adkins.

Other survivors include two sons, Thomas Dale McClung and wife, Phyllis Elaine, of Pence Springs, and Warren M. McClung of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Donvil E. Adkins and wife, Dorma, and Delbert S. Adkins and wife, Louetta, all of Dog Run, and Damon G. Adkins and wife, Joy, of Oak Hill; five sisters, Zella Rhodes and husband, Rolin, of Buchannon, Erma Scott and husband, David, Cathy Scott and husband, Harold, Loretta Salisbury and husband, Gary, and Shirley Rhodes and husband, Hansford, all of Dog Run; four grandchildren, Thomas D. McClung Jr., Casandra, Courtney and Jordynn McClung; and a great-grandson, Jason Alexander McClung.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Joe Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery at Mt. Lookout.

Brothers and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
