Garnett Ann Mitchem

Garnett Ann Mitchem, 67, of Mitchell’s Ridge passed away Dec. 10, 2006.

David A. Moore

David A. Moore, 55, of Maple Fork Rd., Bradley, went to meet the Lord Dec. 10, 2006, following a long illness at Morgantown.

Born Feb. 10, 1951, at Wickham, he was the son of the late Bill Moore and son of Ruth Moore of Oak Hill.

David was a 1971 graduate from Nuttal High School. He was a former barber and orderly at Beckley Hospital. He was a member of the Mabscott Holiness Church.

David enjoyed fishing and wat-ching Woodrow Wilson High School basketball.

In addition to his father, Bill Moore, he was preceded in death by brother, Robert Franklin.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Phyllis Moore; and son, George Moore, of Maple Fork Rd., Bradley; brothers, Leonard and Shirley Moore of Fayettville; Danny and Jeannie Moore of Beaver, Bill and Anderia Moore of Beaver, Tim and Sue Moore of Meadow Bridge, Anthony Moore of Beckley; sisters, Pam Moore of Union, Becky and Butch Cooper of MacArthur, Trish and Kevin Franklin of Fayetteville, NC; best friend, Ernie Royal of Harper Heights and David Toney and friend, Shelby Wickline of Maple Fork; stepchildren, Michael and Christian Gill of Maple Fork; Mary and Adam Farley of Eccles; Reba Wilson of Maple Fork; William and Lisa Wilson of Crab Orchard; nine grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Mabscott Holiness Church with Pastor Buzz Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Emory Wilson, brother-in-law; nephews, Brandon and Shawn Moore, Corey Azie, Brian and Chris Moore.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 13, at the Mabscott Holiness Church.

Tracy Lee Nerren

FAIRLEA — Tracy Lee Nerren, 48, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at his home. There will be a graveside service Thursday at New Lebanon cemetery in Pickaway.

Friends may call noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Phyllis Honaker Powell

RONCEVERTE — Phyllis Honaker Powell, 72, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ronceverte. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ida Mae Jackson Brown

Today we celebrate the life and home going of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Ida Mae Jackson Brown was born Jan. 11, 1921, to the late William and Flossie Matthews Jackson in Layland, W.Va., and received her wings on Dec. 4, 2006, at Fort Washington Hospital in Fort Washington, Md.

She accepted Christ at an early age at St. John United Holiness Church at Layland, under the leadership of the late Elder William E. Neal. She was a faithful member of the St. John United Holiness Church in Beckley, until she moved to Oxon Hill, Md.

Ida Mae Jackson was united in Holy Matrimony on Sept. 1, 1941, to her beloved James “Jimmy” Brown in Layland.

Ida Mae believed in helping anyone that crossed her path. She was a very loving and giving person that shared whatever she had with those that came to her for a helping hand. She even adopted stray cats in her neighborhood.

She was Sunday School secretary at an early age, Secretary of the Missions Department, Deaconess, Missionary, Mother of St. John United Holiness Church, Usher, Treasurer of the Sub District Missions, Department of the United Holiness Churches and Woman of the Year. She was a member of Church Women United, Saturday Morning Bible Study at Central Baptist Church, Prayer Warriors and Raleigh County NAACP.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Edward, William and Rufus Jackson, Flossie Henry, Gracie Erkhart and Cornelia Rhinehart.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Gracie L. Chatmon and her son-in-law, John Chatmon; a granddaughter, Arnecia M. Chatmon, and a great-grandson, Anthony Chatmon of Oxon Hill, Md.; a sister, Cornelia Jackson of Washington, D.C.; four sisters-in-law, Katie Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mary Etta Brown of Dillwyn, Va., Viola Brown of Fayetteville, N.C., and Faye Brown of Scotland Neck, N.C., and a brother-in-law, Harry Brown of Scotland Neck, N.C. She is also survived by 12 nieces, 10 nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service for Ida Mae “Jackson” Brown will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at St. Paul Baptist Temple, Pastor Walter M. Leach, 129 Rice St., Beckley, with the Rev. Cleo Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Viewing will be one hour prior to the services.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Durgan Funeral Services, Beckley.

Lawrence E. Burgess Jr.

OAK HILL — Lawrence E. Burgess Jr., 66, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Beckley VA Medical Center.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at High Lawn Funeral Chapel. Friends may call noon to 1 p.m. Friday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill.

Charles E. Crites

OAK HILL — Charles Elkins Crites, 76, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, following an extended illness.

Born on May 22, 1930, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late James V. Crites and Abbey Susan Elkins Crites.

Mr. Crites was a veteran of the Korean War and was a self-employed carpenter-painter.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Crites, Leonard Crites, Cecil Crites and Harry Crites; and one sister, Hilda Boring.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Lois Eastman Crites of Oak Hill; one son, Gregory Crites of Leoma, TN; one daughter, Kimberly Gregg of Leoma, TN; one stepdaughter, Rhonda Henson of Benton, KY; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2006. At that time we will travel in procession to the graveside service at Huse Memorial Park.

Graveside funeral services will proceed at approximately 11:15 a.m. Friday at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with Rev. Bill Withers officiating.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie M. Friend

Mrs. Elsie M. Friend, age 83, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at her residence after a short illness.

Born March 14, 1923, at Price Hill, Fayette County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Mary Ellen Summers Kintsler.

Mrs. Friend was a ward clerk having worked at Beckley Hospital, was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 32 and one of the founding members of the Beckley Child Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas M. Friend, by a brother, Robert O. Kintsler, and by an aunt, Lucy Frances Kolman.

Surviving are her daughter, Ellen Ann Bland of Beckley; her grandson, Alex R. Bland and his wife Elisa C. Bland of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Anna Rose Parker of Beckley; nephew, Robert F. Parker, II, and his wife Carolyn of Charleston, WV; two nieces, Sandra Ann Parker of Beckley and Theresa Armstrong of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Rev. Samuel S. Sacus officiating. Rite of committal will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Robert F. Parker, II, Robert F. Parker, III, Alex R. Bland, Howard Kolman.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Elsie Friend, to the American Heart Association, Appalachian South, 162 Court St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Robert Kenneth Gillispie

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — Robert Kenneth Gillispie, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006.

Viewing will be 5 p.m. for family on Friday and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for friends at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Arbovale. Service will be noon Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at the Arbovale Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Arbovale cemetery.

APPOMATTOX, Va. — Rhonda Lester Lewis, 44, formerly of Minden, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at her home in Appomattox.

Opal Lykins

DILLE — Opal Lykins, 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Big Union Baptist Church, Dille. Burial will follow in Walker cemetery, Strange Creek. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Big Union Baptist Church at Dille.

Garnett Anne Michem

Garnett Anne Michem, 67, of Princewick passed away Dec. 11, 2006.

Born Nov. 5, 1939, she is the daughter of the late Martin Luther Michem and Adrie Clark Michem.

Garnett loved animals, gardening and was an avid bird watcher. She enjoyed talking and spending time with her friends.

In addition to her parents, Garnett is preceded in death by sisters, Pauline Lock, June Warner; half sister, Virgie Sinsel; brother, Don Mitchem; and half brother, Andrew Crews.

Those left to cherish her memory include sister Alice Roles of Daniels, and Janet Farley of New Mexico; brothers, Martin Mitchem of Tenn., and Jim Mitchem; half brother, Alfred Crews of Florida; and many nieces and nephews and very special friends.

Harold F. Nicely Sr.

On Wednesday, Dec. 13th, 2006, Harold Frederick Nicely passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. He had been in declining health for the past year. He was 84 years of age.

Born at Pemberton on Sept. 21, 1922, Harold was one of four children born to the late Quillie E. and Jane Roles Nicely.

Harold spent his childhood on the Winding Gulf, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Force. A longtime resident of Rhodell, he was in the mining industry for over 40 years, retiring as a federal mine inspector. He last worked for the Pineville Office of the MHSA (Mine Health Safety Administration).

A resident of Beckley since 1984, he was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Neville Street in Beckley.

In addition to his parents, he was the last survivor of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine D’Antoni Nicely, and a son, Kenneth Dean Nicely.

He is the beloved husband of Rosa Manning Meadows Nicely; the dear father of Harold F. (Fred) Nicely Jr. and his wife Betty of St. Clairsville, Ohio; the kind stepfather of Drema Brooks and her husband Sturgille of Leehigh Acres, FL; Loretha Almond and her husband Mike of N. Wilkesboro, NC; Lacy Meadows and his wife Patricia of Jonesville, NC; and Dr. Richard Meadows and his wife Emily of Beckley; 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1009 Neville St., Beckley, with the Rev. Jim Lough officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call at the Melton Mortuary today from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
