Lloyd Wayne Bone

Lloyd Wayne Bone, 56, of Dry Creek, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Charleston on Jan. 17, 1949, to Sylvia Bradford Bone of Dry Creek and the late Sidney Albert Bone.

He was a 1966 graduate of Marsh Fork High School and Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston).

Mr. Bone taught school for 34 years, taking early retirement because of his illness. He taught English, world history and social studies at Marsh Fork Junior High, Marsh Fork High School and Trap Hill Middle.

He was a member of Marsh Fork Presbyterian Church of Dry Creek where he served as an elder and was an active member since childhood.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, going on trips and collecting coins and coal company scrip.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by brothers, Glen and Marvin Bone; sister, Artie Price; and nephew, Dale Bone.

Those left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 33 years, Betty Jean Bone; a daughter, Ruth Ann Hilderbrand and husband, Jamie, of Dry Creek; his precious grandchildren, Sidney, Ryan, Gregory Wayne and Christopher Paul Hilderbrand; a brother, William David Bone and wife, Marsha, and their daughter, Kaitlyn, of Pinch; a sister, Shirley Burnside and husband, William, of Beverly Hills, Fla.; a special nephew, Gary Bone and wife, Kay, of Dry Creek; special sisters-in-law, Donna Platter of Harper, Laverne Bone of Cleveland, Ohio, Sue Means and husband, Rick, of Ripley, Gail Netherton of Spartansburg, S.C., and Drema Clay of Beckley; brothers-in-law, Billy Wiley and wife, Barbara, of Spartansburg, and Michael of Alexandria, Va.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville. The Rev. Danny Gilfilen will officiate.

Burial will be in Cooper cemetery, Dry Creek.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, is in charge of arrangements.

Dennie Wayne Brown Jr.

KOPPERSTON — Dennie Wayne Brown Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Wed-nesday, Nov. 30, 2005, in a Beckley hospital at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 2 days, following a short illness.

Born Jan. 28, 1922, at Toney Fork, he was the son of the late Dennie and Pearl Rollins Brown.

Mr. Brown was a retired coal miner, having worked for Eastern Associated Coal with 35 years of service. He became a member of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church on July 8, 1934, where he served many years as a deacon and on the usher board.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Gaye Cook, Agnes Toler, Vayor Toler and Opal Powell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Ella Rosalene Brown; two sons, Dennie Dewayne Brown and wife, Sandra Y., of Kopperston and Jeffrey Douglas Brown and wife, Loretta, of Athens; two daughters, Sandra Sue Brown and Sharon Brown, both of Kopperston; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A celebration of Junior’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Toneda Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Hamrick and the Rev. Ron Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Kopperston Community cemetery.

Casketbearers will be neph-ews Ronnie L. Toler, James Larry Cook, Matthew Toler, Jason Toler, Timmy Powell, Patrick Powell and U.J. Toler.

Honorary casketbearers will be deacons of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Toby Edison Bussard

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Toby Edison Bussard, 69, of White Sulphur Springs, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the White Sulphur Springs Rescue Squad, monetary gifts to the family, or Emmanuel United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Irvin Clay

BELFAST, Tenn. — How-ard Irvin Clay, 69, formerly of Layland, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at his home in Belfast following a long illness.

Born April 28, 1936, at Asco, he was a son of the late John W. and Hueldath Etta McGan Clay.

Mr. Clay was a U.S. Air Force veteran, and he attended Chestnut Knob Baptist Church at Layland. He was also a truck driver for Forsyth Concrete Co. in Cumming, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Farley Clay, and a son, Travis Clay of Belfast.

Service will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church, Layland, with Pastor Floyd Bolen officiating and Larry Farley assisting. Burial will be in Layland cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Clyde C. ‘Lightnin’ Crowder

RONCEVERTE — Clyde C. “Lightnin” Crowder, 92, passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at his home.

Born Aug. 19, 1913, at Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Everette and Corintha Griffith Crowder.

He was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, attended Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church and was retired from Ripco and the City of Ronceverte. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Mr. Crowder was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Price Crowder, in 1984; two sisters, Naomi and Flora; and a brother, Roy Crowder.

Survivors include a daughter, Lorene Kelley and husband, James, of Bridgeport, Pa.; a son, Carl Crowder and wife, Tince, of Conshohocken, Pa.; a stepson, Charles Eugene Crowder and wife, Virginia, of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Helen Hodge of Wadsworth, Ohio; his caregivers, Ruby and Junior Hutchinson of Ronceverte; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Ronceverte, with Pastor Calvin Weikel officiating. Burial will be in Salem Presbyterian Church cemetery, Organ Cave.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Verna Lolene Adams

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Verna Lolene Adams, 80, of Mooresville, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Joseph Cascio

WAYNESBORO, Va. — Lt. Col. (retired) Charles Joseph Cascio, 72, of Waynesboro, died Monday, May 14, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1934, at Stanaford to the late Joseph and Carmela Cascio.

He was a 1952 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He attended West Virginia University on a track scholarship, and graduated in 1956 with a degree in business management, and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He served his country in the Army on active duty for 20 years, including a tour in Vietnam. While in the Army, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, as well as numerous other medals for outstanding service and accomplishments.

After retiring from the Army, Lt. Col. Cascio embarked on a career as a real estate professional. He was employed with Montague, Miller and Co. in Waynesboro. He was a passionate golfer and gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie.

Lt. Col. Cascio is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia; a daughter, Natalie and her husband, Alec, of Blacksburg, Va.; a son, Tony and his wife, Julie, of Birmingham, Ala.; four sisters, Margaret and Anne of West Virginia, Josephine of New Jersey and JoAnn of Georgia; and three grandchildren, Adam, Ben and Cate.

Private memorial service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the UVA Leukemia Research Fund, c/o Dr. John Densmore, at the UVA Medical Center, Box 800716, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Mavis M. Morris Collier

Mavis M. Morris Collier, 97, of Sophia, formerly of Hyattsville, Md., passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born March 11, 1910, at Dyke, Va., she was the daughter of the late George E. Morris and Dora A. Marshall Morris of Dyke.

She was a member of the Christian Church in Dyke.

Mrs. Collier was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis L. Collier; a daughter, Yvonne Collier; a granddaughter, Giovanna Bellafoire; sons-in-law, Edgar L. Johnson and Thomas D. Sheler; two brothers; and four sisters.

Mrs. Collier was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include her four daughters, Elnora M. Sheler of Beaver and a special friend, Ron E. Calhoun, Venita A. Johnson of Sophia, Delores A. Bows and her husband, Gene, of Lusby, Md., and Carolyn M. Bellafoire and her husband, Giovanni, of Millville, Del.; two grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters.

Graveside rites and burial will be 2 p.m. Monday at Holly Memorial Gardens, Charlottesville, Va., with the Rev. Dean Adams officiating.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Thomas Marshall Deaner

Thomas Marshall Deaner, 59, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law in Campbell County, Va.

He was born Jan 21, 1948, in Beckley to the late Alma Gross Deaner and Shelby W. Deaner Sr.

Thomas is survived by his son, Sean T. Deaner of Reading, Pa.; his brother, Shelby W. Deaner Jr.; two nephews, Robert and John Deaner; four great-nephews; and two great-nieces.

Thomas graduated from E.C. Glass High School. He served in the Army and was stationed in Vietnam from 1968-1969. After his discharge, he was employed by B&W, and then as a consultant for FEMA. Until he was diagnosed with cancer, Thomas was primary care provider for his father, Shelby W. Deaner Sr., who passed away in February 2007. Thomas spent the last year under the care and comfort of his brother, Shelby Jr., his sister-in-law, Carol, and his nephew, John and wife, Connie Deaner.

There will be a celebration of Thomas’ life for family and friends at the home of his brother, Shelby Jr., at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19.

Linda Kay Evans

HILLDALE — Linda Kay Evans, 48, of Hilldale, went home to be with the Lord at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Nitro following a struggle with cancer.

Mary Sue Evans

NETTIE — Mary Sue Evans, 61, of Nettie, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, in Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

She was born Aug. 16, 1945, to the late Bert and Reva Fain.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Barry Evans.

Mary Sue lived a full and wonderful life, loved by everyone who knew her. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Nettie. She served as church treasurer, pianist, organist, choir director, youth director and teacher, as well as being involved in most other church functions.

She was employed by the Nettie Post Office for 38 years and had been postmaster for 24 years. She started the Relay for Life at Mount Zion United Methodist Church approximately 10 years ago, with Penile United Methodist Church becoming involved approximately two years ago. She worked very hard in the fight for cancer research, not knowing that this would be the disease that would claim her life. Her courage will live on through those who will continue to work diligently for the Relay for Life to find a cure for cancer. Her goal of $10,000 has been met for the year 2007.

She loved traveling and going to Smith Mountain Lake with Eddie to fish and sit on the dock and read. She will be sadly missed by her family, church family and friends of the community where she knew most everyone.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Evans; brothers-in-law and their spouses; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Nettie, with the Rev. Charles Wilson, the Rev. Harold Duskey and the Rev. Denver Childers officiating. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery, Nettie.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va.; send donations to Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Nettie, WV 26681.
