Charles E. ‘Chuck’ Shirley

ROANOKE, Va. — Charles Edward “Chuck” Shirley, 28, of Roanoke, formerly of Oceana, passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2005.

Born Aug. 29, 1977, in Beckley, he was the son of Charles D. Shirley and Deborah Stevens Shirley.

Chuck was of the Protestant faith and was a 1995 graduate of Oceana High School. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, being outdoors and being with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Terri Dyke Shir-ley, in 2003; his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Ruth Stev-ens; paternal grandmother, Tamery Shirley; and uncle, Terry Stevens.

Survivors include his parents, Chuck and Debbie Stev-ens Shirley of Oceana; a sister, Tara Webb and her husband, Keith, of Grandview; a nephew, Alex Webb of Grandview; grandfather, John Shir-ley of Mount Hope; six aunts, Midge Goff and her husband, Jack, of Kopperston, June Kemp and her husband, Bob, of Bluefield, Norma Russell and her husband, Jim, of Evarts, Ky., Betty Skidmore of Evarts, Lorena Shirley-Thomas of Pineville and Connie Stafford of Jasper, Ga.; two uncles, Ronald Stevens and his wife, Sparky, of Fair-dale and Pete Stevens and his wife, Sandy, of Vandalia, Ohio; special extended family, Tommy and Denise Dyke of Oceana and Timmy and Krissy Blankenship of Roan-oke, Va.; several cousins; extended family; and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Evans Memorial Cha-pel, Oceana, with the Rev. Randy Bowles officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Timmy Blankenship, Dale Thomas, Keith Webb, Kyle Webb, Jack Goff and Ron Stev-ens will serve as pallbearers.

Evans Funeral Home, Oce-ana, is serving the Shirley family.

Polly Shrewsberry

IROQUOIS — Polly Lester Shrewsberry, 81, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born Feb. 3, 1924, at Bud, she was the daughter of the late William Owen and Cosby Catherine Stanley Lester.

Mrs. Shrewsberry was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Pineville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Shrewsberry, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1943, at Basin by the Rev. G.E. Kirk; a grandson, Dewey Emerson Shrewsberry, in 1978; a granddaughter, Gina DeFilipo, in 1983; three sisters, Edna, Olga and Maggie Goodwin; and four brothers and infant brother, John, Ezra, Isaac and Troy Lester.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Louellen C. DeFilipo of Sparrowbush, N.Y., and Reva L. Cardwell of Itmann; four sons, Paul E. Shrewsberry Jr. of Slab Fork, William M. Shrewsberry of Hilton Hill, Dewey E. Shrewsberry of Amigo and Robert D. Shrewsberry of Iroquois; a sister, Maudi Sizemore of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a brother, Tyre Lester of New Richmond; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with Mr. Raydell Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at George Shrewsbury cemetery, Barkers Ridge.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Anthony Michael Adams

RUPERT — Anthony Michael Adams, almost three months old, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Roanoke Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born Sept. 6, 2005, in Roanoke, he was the son of Stephanie Adams and the late John Michael Adams.

Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Krista Walton; a great-grandfather, Harold Fleshman; and great-great-grandparents, Mildred and Mae McCormick.

Survivors include his mother, Stephanie Adams of Rupert; three sisters, Orenda, Kayla and Tierra; great-grandparents, Neal and Glenna Osborne of Hilton Village and Violet Fleshman of Rainelle; special uncle, Dean Fleshman of Rainelle; great-grandfather, James Burdette Sr. of Crawley; maternal grandparents, Gaye and Robert Walton of Rupert, James Burdette Jr. of Canton, Ohio; and paternal grandparents, Guy Adams of Fountain, Fla., and Fran Cutlip of Rupert.

There will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. today at the End of The Trail cemetery with Pastor Dana Gatewood officiating. Anthony will be buried in the baby section next to his sister, Krista.

There will be no visitation.

Crystal Dawn Atkinson

Crystal Dawn Atkinson, 24, of Beckley, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, following a sudden illness.

Born July 10, 1981, at Beckley, she was the daughter of Larry V. Atkinson of Naples, Fla., and Debbie Stone of Skelton.

Crystal was a 1999 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Vernon R. Atkinson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three-year-old daughter, Ciera Nicole Evans and her father, Denver R. Evans of Beckley; grandmother, Marie Atkinson of Beckley; sister, Carla Massey of Fayetteville; nieces, Chelsea D. and Haley M. Massey of Fayetteville; her mother’s companion, John Ward of Skelton. She will also be missed by several other family and friends, including a special friend, Jill Adams of Beckley.

Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Brother Dennis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery, Oak Grove.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Harold ‘Tony’ Cameron

PINEVILLE — Harold Anthony “Tony” Cameron, 30, of Pineville, our little boy, a man and a beloved father, finished his race on Earth on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005.

Born Oct. 9, 1975, in Raleigh County, he was the son of Harold “Eddie” and Delilah Roberts Cameron of Pineville.

Tony was a devoted father who cherished every moment he spent with his children. He was dedicated at the Brenton Church of God and was a 1994 graduate of Pineville High School. He loved fishing, four-wheeling and being outdoors. Tony was also an avid hunter, so run my little man, hunt, fish and be with God.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rochelle Nichols Cameron; maternal grandfather, Luther Roberts; and paternal grandmother, Mary Magnoline Cameron.

In addition to his parents, survivors include five children, MaKayla Cameron, Labryant Nichols, Gaebriel White, Elijah Cameron and Noah Cameron; a sister, Michele Daniels and her husband, Jeff, of Point Pleasant; maternal grandmother, Ethelene Roberts of Brenton; paternal grandparents, Council and Jenny Cameron of Hanover; Godparents of his children, James and Latoya Lester of Statesville, N.C.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brenton Church of God with the Rev. Rodney England officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Larry Canaday

Larry Canaday, 86, of Beckley, formerly of Crab Orchard, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, following a short illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1919, at Lester, he was the son of the late James Bailey and Caroline Bryson Canaday.

Larry was a coal miner retiring from Eastern Associated Coal Co. with more than 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the Packs Branch Baptist Church and had been a lifetime resident of Raleigh County.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Covey Canaday; a son, Michael Larry Canaday; sisters, Molly, Mildred and Vivian and by brothers, Obal, Bastine, Reginald and Bailey.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Canaday and his wife, Judy, of Easton, Pa., Ronald Canaday and his wife, Sandy, of Crab Orchard, and Dennis Canaday and his wife, Mary, of Beckley, with whom he resided; a sister, Geraldine Kline of Ormond Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Margaret Dickson of Beckley.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Samuel Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaday cemetery, Glen View.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

George Andrew Thornley

May 9, 1942 - March 26, 2010

George Andrew Thornley, 67, of Beckley and Titusville, FL, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 at Bowers Hospice House following an extended illness. Born May 9, 1942 in Beckley, he was the son of the late Peter and Ethel Bodo Thornley. George was co-owner of Mallimar Truck Parts. A big part of George’s life was being the “CEO” of the Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1960 and spear-heading their scholarship fund drive. He loved antique cars and spending time with his grandchildren whom he dearly loved. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by an infant brother, Michael Thornley.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Mallamas Thornley, daughter, Elizabeth O’Donnell and husband Larry of Orlando, FL, son, Michael Thornley and daughter Kathryn Thornley both of West Palm Beach, FL, grandsons; Nathan and Ryan O’Donnell, sister, Karen Crump and husband Andy of Beckley, nephew, Kenneth Glaize and wife Connie and their son Austin of Richmond, VA, and his aunt, Verna Bair of Marshalltown, IA
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Monday.
Classmates from the Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1960 will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be “George’s Harem” of ladies that assisted him in planning WWHS Class of 1960 reunions and scholarship drives.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Woodrow Wilson Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund, C/O Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main St., Suite 203, Beckley, WV 25801 or to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Dr., Beckley, WV 25801.

Norman Richard Crews

KEGLEY — Norman Ri-chard Crews, 66, passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at his sisters home in Kegley, W.Va., following a brief illness of lung cancer.

Born in Hinton, W.Va., on June 18, 1939, he was a son of the late Earl M. and Beatrice M. (Basham) Crews.

He was a truck driver at Crosby Trucking, Mt. Sidney, VA., for 15 years, before his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army as a PFC. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was united in marriage on Sept. 29, 1972, to Elsie Mae (Morris) Crews, who preceded him in death on July 3, 2003.

He is survived by three sons, Christopher (Chip) Crews of Harrisonburg, Richard Crews, Jr. of Calif., and Clark Allen Crews of Pa., three sisters, Mary Eleanor Crews (Roland) Chambers of Kegley, W.Va., Joy Crews (Danny) Towler, of Bassett, Illa Crews (Homer) Barnes, of Winston Salem, N.C., four brothers, Don (Carla) Crews of Hardy, Va., Van Crews of Rocky Mount, Va., Arvin Crews of Ga., and William T. Bowers, Jr. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher, Kaitlyn, Bethany, Mekenna and Makalya.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel, Bridgewater, Va., with the Rev. Bob Sutherland officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olivet Church cemetery Timberville, Va. The family will receive friends at the Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to Salvation Army, 229 Wakefield PL, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater is in charge of arrangements.

Franklin R. Fernandez

Franklin “Frank” Ray Fernandez, 60, of Alpine Dr., Daniels, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at home following a short illness.

Born Dec. 9, 1944, at Grandview, he was the son of the late Frank Lee and Opal Marie McDaniel Fernandez.

Mr. Fernandez spent his early childhood at Grandview. He and his family moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he graduated from high school, returning to Beckley in 1985. He is of the Christian faith and worked as a driver for Swift Trucking Co. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemarie Fernandez.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Mastrilli Fernandez; two stepsons, Thomas Ferraiuolo and wife, Barbara, of Pittsburgh and Ronald Buck and wife, Robin, of Beckley; two grandchildren, Teresa and Joseph; two sisters, Nora Hammack of Columbus, Ohio and Myrna Parsons and husband, Paul, of South Charleston.

Committal service will be 12 noon Wednesday in the Graceland Mausoleum, Graceland cemetery, South Charleston, with Pastor Larry Halsey officiating. Burial will follow.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Melton Mortuary, Beckley.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.

Alma J. Gainer

PINEVILLE — Alma J. Gainer, 84, passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at her residence, following a short illness.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
