Richard Thomas Mullins

Richard Thomas Mullins, 74, of Old Willis Branch Hollow, Pax, fell asleep in Christ on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born March 22, 1932, at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Renzie and Laura Williams Mullins. He was raised by his grandmother, Ida Williams and an uncle, Doris Williams.

Mr. Mullins was a disabled coal miner, a member and Elder of Pax Advent Christian Church and was past president of the 3rd District Advent Christian Conference. He was a member of the UMWA and a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Mullins; two grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Mullins and Jaime Marie Mullins and a great-grandchild, Zachary Thomas Mullins.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Bailey Mullins; three sons, Clay Mullins and wife, Debbie of Old Willis Branch Hollow, Rex Mullins and wife, Brenda of Lively, and Yancy Mullins and wife, Cathy of Mount Hope; two daughters, Sherry Scurlock and husband, Jay of MacArthur, and Kassie Smith and husband, Winifred of Red Star; nine grandchildren, Danny, Brandon, Jarrod, Jason, Geneva, Mickey, D.J., Justine, and Eli; seven great-grandchildren, Ivy, Tristan, Jaedyn, Dominic, Kristen, Jacob and Kailey Rose; four sisters-in-law, Floa Stover, Audrey Williams, Becky Toney, and Flossie Mullins; and two brothers-in-law, Mickey Bailey, and Teddy Bailey, and many other loving family members.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Pax Advent Christian Church, Pax, with former Pastor James Balser and Pastor Paul Bricker officiating. Burial will follow in the Pax Community cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, and one hour before the services on Wednesday at the church. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 3110 of Oak Hill.

Lucy Simmon

Lucy Simmon, 81, of Glen White, died in a local hospital following a long illness. She was a long time patient at Genesis Health Care at Daniels.

Winston Shelvon Smith

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Winston Shelvon Smith, 63, formerly of Oak Hill, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Born Oct. 18, 1942, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Shelvon and Margie Lana Painter Smith.

Winston moved to the Ormond Beach area in 1992, where he was a Branch Manager for John Deere Landscapes No. 120, was a licensed master electrician and had worked in the coal mines of West Virginia for 20 years.

He was a member of the Daytona Beach Drive In Christian Church, Dayton Beach, Fla., the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 AF and AM, Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M., Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 K.T., the Beni Kedem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. and the UMWA.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gaytha Sharon Chaanine.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Tyree Smith; three daughters, Kelly Lynn Oliva of Ormond Beach, Fla., Leigh Ann Crist of Pliny, W.Va., and Amy Jo Sauter of Ormond Beach, Fla.; sister, Delilah Gail Knox of Powhatan, Va.; eight grandchildren, Larry Jr., Joseph, Linda, Sara, Jacqueline, Riley, Laura and Leann and a sister-in-law, Barbara Tyree.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with the Rev. Pete Lokant officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with Masonic graveside rites.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children - Ky., 1900 Richmond Rd., Lexington, Ky. 40502.

Isabel Wickline Craft Terry

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Isabel Wickline Craft Terry, 94, died Monday, April 24, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, White Sulphur Springs.

The family will receive their friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs.

Thomas Edward Tolley Sr.

Thomas Edward Tolley Sr., 77, of Rt. # Rivesville, passed away Monday, April 24, 2006, at his residence. He was born at Tolleytown, on Dec. 1, 1928, the son of the late Walter Tolley Sr. and Della Elizabeth Shumate Tolley.

Mr. Tolley was retired from General Motors Corp of Baltimore as a painter with 29 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairmont. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 8th Army and served with the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict. He served his country for a total of 12 years and was awarded three silver stars.

Mr. Tolley played guitar at numerous local events and played country music regularly at the Valley Memories Country Music Show in Pruntytown and the Sagebrush Roundup at Bumner’s Ridge Community, Fairmont. He loved going to the Nautalis Connection in Fairmont and enjoyed playing Santa Claus for people throughout the community. He was a member of the VFW, Post No. 7048 of Fairmont.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Smith Tolley of Rivesville; two sons, Thomas E. Tolley Jr. of New Jersey, and Lawrence Tolley and his wife,, Karen of Grafton, W.Va.; daughters, Mona Armour and husband, Mark of Baltimore, Md., Della Hall and husband, C.T. of Walla Walla, Wash., and Tracey Long and husband, Milton of Baltimore, Md., two brothers, John Tolley of Crab Orchard, and Walter Tolley Jr. of Ohio; two sisters, Oretha Green of Hurst, Texas, and Reva Joyce Webb of Ohio; 18 grandchildren, Shannon Tolley, Thomas E. Tolley III, Kimberly Tolley, Destry Tolley, Della Tolley, Nichole Armour, Ashley E., Armour, William Britton, Joshua Tolley, Priscilla Hall, Alicia Tolley, Lawren Tolley, Travis Tolley, Brianna Tolley, Brandon Tolley, Robert Long, Sara Long, and Zachary Long; and three great-grandchildren, Declan Armour, Stephen Britton, Elizabeth Newman.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Eustace Tolley, and Darrell Tolley; sisters, Geraldine Manning, Lois Hutchinson, Claudia Eunice Tolley, Lola Gunoe; and several step brothers and step sisters.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont.

Visitation will also be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, the hour of the service at the funeral home with the Rev. Walter Tolley Jr. officiating. Following the services, the Marion County Military Veterans Council will conduct ritualistic services at the funeral home.

Family and friends are invited to a covered dish dinner following services at the Smithtown Community Center. Cremation will follow with private interment at the convenience of the family.

Clay W. Walker

Clay W. Walker of Beaver, died at his home, Cris Lane, Beaver, Friday, April 21, 2006, of cancer.

Born June 17, 1947, at Madison, he was the son of Clay L. Walker of Parkersburg, and the late Doris Long Walker of Parkersburg.

Survivors include his father, Clay L. Walker of Parkersburg, his loving companion, Freda Sisk of Beaver; two daughters, Kim Bowman and Mike of Columbia, S.C., and Kelly Marshall and Shawn of Union; a son, Brett of New Jersey; seven grandchildren, Chip, Chad, and Katibeth of Columbia, S.C., Daniel, Molly, Tori, and Megan Marshall of Union, and his faithful dog, Bogie.

Clay graduated from Woodrow Wilson Class of 65 and attended Concord College.

He worked many years for Baker Huges selling mining supplies. He was a faithful member and secretary for the Elks Lodge in Beckley and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Mabscott.

He was an avid golfer and spent many days playing golf with his friends.

His body was donated to West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg.

A celebration of his life will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the Elks Lodge on Heber St. in Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Clay Walker to Hospice of Beckley, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Mabscott or the Elks Lodge in Beckley.

Clifford Franklin Denney

Clifford Franklin Denney, 82, went to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, April 23, 2006, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 13, 1923, to Martha and Elmer Denney in Kingston.

He was an Army Korean War veteran and a retired coal miner. He was also a member of the New River Gorge Square Dance Club and United Mine Workers District 17.

He was preceded in death by his son, David; two brothers, Beecher and Murlph; and four sisters, Ethel, Agnes, Frances and Gertrude.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret; a daughter, Jean and husband, George; a son, Kennith and wife, Elaine; a grandson, Daniel and wife, Mindy; three great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Ian and Colin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Meador Ellison

Virginia Marilyn Meador Ellison 80 of Beckley, passed away Saturdaym April 22, 2006.

Born Dec. 1, 1925, at Camp Creek, she was the daughter of the late Armus Willie Meador and Virginia Cleo French. Virginia was of the Christian faith.

Virginia was preceded in death by five brothers, Curtis, Billy, Byron, Kenneth and Paul Meador.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 60 years, Donzie Ellison; son, Kerry Ellison and wife, Lana, and their children, Krystal and Jason, of Princeton; daughter, Sharon Dolin and husband, Allen, of Fairdale and their daughters, Heidi Cole and husband, Bobby, of Montpelier, Va., and Wendy Makra of Crab Orchard; son, David Ellison and wife, Peggy, and their two children, Stephanie and Jeremy, of Kannapolis, N.C.; daughter, Jennifer Sauls and husband, John, and their children, Holly and Drew, of Maple Fork; brother, Deane Meador of Williston, Fla.; sister, Una Melton of Orlando, Fla., and sister, Helen Griffith of Cool Ridge; and three great-grandchildren, Gavin and Gianna Cole and Ethan Ellison.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Service will immediately follow with Rev. Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

ALDERSON — Bethel Leah Kessinger Fields, 89, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Johnny Johnson

Johnny Johnson, 82, of 203 Marion St., Beckley, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at B-ARH following an extended illness.

Dr. John Bernard Jones

Dr. John Bernard Jones, 76, born March, 13, 1930, passed away Friday, April 21, 2006.

John Bernard Jones was born in Fayette County to Burrell Jones and Mildred Hicks. He is survived by his loving wife, Dreama I. Wright; daughter, Cynthia Ann Gray and husband, James; sons, Mark Bernard and wife, Marva, John Wesley and wife, Soniah, and Leonard McKinney and wife, Geeta; grandchildren, Marcus, Julia, Chelsea, John Wesley II and Deven; his mother, Mildred Williams; and brother, William. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.

“Doc” began his formal education at Bluefield State College where he was an athletic standout. He received undergraduate degrees from Bluefield State as well as West Virginia State University. He went on to receive a Master’s degree from West Virginia University, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

“Doc” held various roles with a wide variety of responsibilities with numerous primary, secondary as well as collegiate level institutions. These organizations include, but are not limited to, West Virginia public schools, West Virginia State University, West Virginia University, University of Pittsburgh, Piney Woods Country Life School, Rust College, Meridian Community College, as well as Mississippi State University. In all of his roles, “Doc” worked selflessly in his efforts to enhance and educate young people of all walks of life. He was a leader by example and dedicated his life work to empowering and helping people less fortunate. His wit, knowledge, courage and empathy toward others will long be cherished by family, friends, as well as colleagues.

The following list is not close to being all inclusive of the many boards and organizations. He was a life member of the following organizations: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Phi Delta Kappa International.

He was on the Board of Directors for the following groups: East Mississippi Development Corp., Civitan Club of Meridian, Meridian, Child Development Center (chair), Meridian Airport Authority, American Cancer Society, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, Meridian Housing Authority (Advisory Council chairman resident), Mississippi Main Street Association, mid-Mississippi Development District (treasurer), Mississippi Minority Business Alliance, Zoning Board of Appeal — Meridian Miss., Meridian Retirement Connection Committee, Lauderdale County 4-H Council, Saint James AME Church and Mississippi State Board of Corrections.

A viewing gathering to celebrate his life will be 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, where service will be noon at Saint Paul Baptist Temple, 129 Rice St., Beckley, with Pastor Walter M. Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
