Janice Ruth Lyons McGrady

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Janice Ruth Lyons McGrady, 71, formerly of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at her home.

Born in West Virginia, she had been a resident of Port St. Lucie since 1990, coming from Beckley.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and arts and crafts. Previously she was a dairy manager with Broughton Dairy and a cashier with Eppy’s Drug Store in Beckley.

She was a member of Treasure Coast Church of God in Port St. Lucie.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Earl McGrady Jr.; two sons, Danny McGrady of Beckley and Richard Allen Jr. of Panama City Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Vicky Underwood of Beckley and Penny Taylor of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy Allen of Hollywood, Fla., and Loretta Vasko of Miramar, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Money Monroe and Mabel Ruth Lyons.

Graveside rites and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with the Rev. Frankie Lyons officiating.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Mason Joseph McKinney

Mason Joseph McKinney died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2006, in the Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was the son of the late Mason A. and Bertha (Vest) McKinney of Ghen. He was born May 22, 1934. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He was employed as a civil engineer.

He was a member of Ghent Missionary Baptist Church and sang in the choir and with several quartets and shape note singers.

He was also preceded in death by his wife in 1991 and a daughter, Lisa Ann, in 1966.

He is survived by a son, Mason Joseph II (Rose) of Glen Morgan; a grandson, Michael McKinney of Charlotte, N.C.; four stepsons, Terry Groves and wife, Sherri, of Oak Hill, Steven Groves and wife, Regina, of Cape Hatteras, N.C., Randy Groves and James R. Shafer of Summersville; two stepdaughters. Belinda Hair and husband, Jerry, and Janice Johnson, all of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Lois Pack and husband, Clyde, of Daniels; a brother, Dare McKinney and wife, Carol, of Glen Morgan; 10 step grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A public memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the church with the Rev. Doug Walls officiating.

There will be no visitation or funeral service.

Oakey Carl McKinney

BRENTON — Oakey Carl McKinney, 85, of Skin Fork Road, Brenton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 24, 2006, at the Beckley VA Medical Center, surrounded by his daughters.

Born March 28, 1921, at Herndon, he was the son of the late Maudie Blankenship and Oscar “Bud” McKinney.

Oakey served in the U.S. Army in World War II, receiving several medals, including the Purple Heart. He was of the Baptist faith, last attending Cooper Memorial Baptist Church until his illness.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Arlene Lucas McKinney; an infant daughter, Agnes; and three sons, infant son James Carl, Buddy “Skinny” McKinney and Clyde Roy McKinney, preceded him in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Cricket Sizemore and her husband, John, of Skin Fork Road, Brenton, Sue Peck of Boynton Beach, Fla., Barbara Blankenship and her husband, Roy, of Long Branch, and Betty Mohney of Pineville; six granddaughters, Vicki Powell and her husband, Rich, of Eastover, S.C., Kim Crowley and her husband, Phil, of Loxahatchee, Fla., Lisa Kendall and her husband, Mikie, of New Castle, Va., Krystal Browning and her husband, Jerry, of Oceana, Tina McKinney and her husband, Bill, of Sparta, Ky., and Angie McKinney of Vanceburg, Ky.; five grandsons, Tom Sizemore and his wife, Shawna, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Dennis Moore and his wife, Becky, of Oceana, Carl Mohney of New Castle, Va., Timmy Mohney of Pineville and Steven Moore of Raphine, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Justin, and Jessica Sizemore, Jennifer and Andrew Arnold, Phillip and Kyle Crowley, Tracy Kendall, Rebekah Mohney, and Bryce and Kaitlyn Moore; a special sister-in-law, Barbara Sue Compton; and his caregivers, Julie Collins and Loretta Hatfield.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Billy Compton officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Military graveside service will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, is serving the McKinney family.

Leonard E. Paxton

SUMMERSVILLE — Leonard E. Paxton, 86, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Asbury cemetery, Dog Run.

Wade J. Prevette

GAHANNA, Ohio — Wade Junior Prevette, 76, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, April 24, 2006.

Service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Schoedinge North East Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna.

Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Lawrence Stoots, 86, of Weston Lane, Eccles, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at his home following a long illness.

Roger Clayton Stover

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Roger Clayton Stover, 70, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Colcord Presbyterian Church, Colcord. Friends may call noon until time of service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy can be made the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73123-1718.

Clay W. Walker

Clay W. Walker, 58, of Beaver, died at his home, Cris Lane, Beaver, on Friday, April 21, 2006, of cancer.

Born June 17, 1947, at Madison, he was the son of Clay L. Walker of Parkersburg, and the late Doris Long Walker of Parkersburg.

Survivors include his father, Clay L. Walker of Parkersburg, his loving companion, Freda Sisk of Beaver; two daughters, Kim Bowman and Mike of Columbia, S.C., and Kelly Marshall and Shawn of Union; a son, Brett of New Jersey; seven grandchildren, Chip, Chad and Katibeth of Columbia, Daniel, Molly, Tori, and Megan Marshall of Union; and his faithful dog, Bogie.

Clay graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1965, and attended Concord College.

He worked many years for Baker Hughes, selling mining supplies. He was a faithful member and secretary for the Elks Lodge in Beckley and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Mabscott.

He was an avid golfer and spent many days playing golf with his friends.

His body was donated to West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg.

A celebration of his life will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Elks Lodge on Heber Street in Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Clay Walker to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Mabscott or the Elks Lodge in Beckley.

James H. Boggs Jr.

LEWISBURG — James H. Boggs Jr., 59, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

At Mr. Boggs request, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Homer E. Compton

Homer E. Compton, 94 of Cool Ridge, became an angel on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Hospital.

Born Aug. 14, 1911, at Martinsville, Va., he was the son of the late John Tyler Compton and the late Roxie Harrison Wall Compton.

Homer attended Ghent Free-will Baptist Church; he loved family get-togethers, gardening and fishing.

He was a coal miner with 41 years of service and was a 70-year member of the UMWA.

In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence H. Compton; a daughter, Jean Craddock; eight brothers; and a sister.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Goldie Compton; daughter-in-law, Jackie Compton of Shady Spring; son, David Compton of Bradley; daughter, Linda Ratliff of Beckley; three stepsons, Russ, Roger and David Hicks; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter, Miranda.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. Gene Snuffer and the Rev. Robert Barley officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rev. Jerry R. Cook

Our beloved Jerry Randall Cook, 69, of Canterbury Drive, Shady Spring, passed away suddenly Sunday, April 23, 2006, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born in Wyoming County on July 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Fred P. Cook of Oceana, the late Ona Cook Lewis Kirby of Beckley, and stepmother, Bethel Cook Angles of Oceana.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Cook was preceded in death by his infant grandson, Casey Peeler, and a brother, Perry Cook, who also died April 23 in 2005.

Rev. Cook was pastor of Bradley Presbyterian Church and Mount Hope Presbyterian Church.

Education included the WWHS class of 1955 and Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) where he excelled in the football and wrestling programs. He graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary, Atlanta, Ga., where he received his Master’s of Divinity. He was ordained on Sept. 27, 1964, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

In his early ministry, he served as pastor of several churches throughout the South before returning to West Virginia. He worked extensively in family counseling and addiction recovery programs. He retired from West Virginia State Department of Rehabilitation Services and became pastor of the Bradley and Mount Hope Presbyterian Churches.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joyce; daughters, Angela Peeler and husband, Jeff, of Cherryville, N.C., and Shelley Cook of Las Vegas, Nev.; and grandchildren, Jason, Amber and Josh of Cherryville. Jerry’s family also includes his stepchildren, Jennifer Cropp and husband, Randy, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Karen Davis and husband, Scott, of Seattle, Wash., Travis Eye and wife, Anne Marie, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and grandchildren, Christian of West Palm Beach, Emma of Seattle, Reagan of Cincinnati; and a special friend, Charlie Eye of Daniels.

Brothers include C. Joe Cook and wife, Rexanna Noble, of Daniels, Mike Cook of Beckley and Frank Kirby of Stafford, Va. Sisters include Barbara Halstead and husband, Robert, of Daniels, Ruth Dowell and husband, Roy, of Mountain City, Tenn., Joan Pack and husband, Danny, of Dumfries, Va., Jean Lester and husband, Parker, of Ivanhoe, Va., Juanita Barber and husband, Roy, of Lewisburg; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen (Perry) Cook of Churchville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Mount Hope Presbyterian Church. Service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at the church with the Rev. Malcolm Brownlee and the Rev. Roy Dowell officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be utilized for the outreach programs of the Bradley and Mount Hope Presbyterian Churches. Contributions may be mailed to Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, 412 Main St., Mount Hope, WV 25880.
