Ena Johnson Blake Moles
ROANOKE, Va. — Ena Johnson Blake Moles, 99, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 12, 2007.
Remarkably, both of her grandfathers were veterans of the Civil War and she traveled to nearby Christiansburg, Va., as a child in the family buggy. She managed the family general store, Blake’s Grocery, in the community of Montgomery for several years.
With a wide circle of friends, Ena enjoyed the many who came to learn from her stories and smile at her wit. Her teaching career started at the two-room Den Hill School and later continued in the Allegany Springs one-room school near Shawsville. Former students, some in their late 70s, came calling. She was graduated from Shawsville High School, Radford College and Marshall University and also taught at Sullivan, Ghent and Shady Spring elementary schools in Raleigh County. Ena was an active member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke and a former member of First Baptist Church in Shady Spring.
She was born in Montgomery County on Sept. 19, 1907, to her late parents, Allen Leroy and Elizabeth Nancy Blake of Montgomery. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John W. Moles; brothers, Russell and Ralph Blake; and sister, Allie Blake Camper.

An avid gardener, her flowers were appreciated by many and she excelled in the culinary arts. Ena’s plant collection included a Christmas cactus over 100 years old and tropical plants carefully attended during the winter months and placed outdoors in the spring. Her holiday meals were things of legend by many family members and friends.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel with Chaplain Marvin Barbre officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
