Malvern H. ‘M.H.’ Sluss Jr.

JESSE — Malvern H. “M.H.” Sluss Jr., 80, of Jesse, passed away Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Beckley VA Medical Center.

Born July 30, 1926, at Jesse, he was the son of the late Malvern Sluss Sr. and Mamie Ruth Cook Sluss.

Mr. Sluss was a lifelong resident of Jesse. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Sluss Walters.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Clowers Sluss; a son, Greg Sluss and his wife, Susan, of Kopperston; a daughter, Elizabeth Pendry and her husband, Ted, of Princeton; a son-in-law, Jerry Walters of Tennessee; two brothers, Al Litz Sluss and his wife, Joan, of Fort Ashby and James Jackson Sluss and his wife, Sharon, of Huntington; six grandchildren, Chuck Pendry and his wife, Suzie, of Greenville, N.C., Larry Pendry and his wife, Cindy, of Sutton, Timothy Walters and his wife, Trista, of Lynco, Heather Roop and her husband, Kevin, of Beckley, Sunny Cook and her husband, Ben, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Matt Sluss of Kopperston; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. today at Cook cemetery, Jesse. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 2:30. Military rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

Janice A. Shelton Armentrout

FAYETTEVILLE — Janice A. Shelton Armentrout, 74, of Rt. 4, Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2007, at home, following a short illness.

Born May 10, 1933, at Winding Gulf, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Edna M. Ash Shelton.

She was a clerk at the Ben Franklin store in Fayetteville. She was a member of the Gatewood Church of God.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Parker Allen Armentrout; a son, Richard Allen Armentrout; brothers, William E. Shelton, Beauford L. Shelton, and Harold K. Shelton; and a sister, Jean McKalvia.

Survivors include her son, Ronald Earl Armentrout at home; a daughter, Renee J. Bailey and husband Roger Bailey Jr. of Fayetteville; a daughter-in-law, Denise Armentrout of Beckley; grandchildren, Kayleigh Armentrout of Beckley, Brittany R. Bailey and Jared P. Bailey, both of Fayetteville; brothers, Earl C. Shelton of Salem, Va., and Guy D. Shelton of Beckley; sisters, Virginia Bryant of Louisiana and Betty Austin of Geneva, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gatewood Church of God, with Rev. Jackie Pittman officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 12 p.m. noon until 1 p.m.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Harvey Jerry Bailey

CHESTER, Va. — Harvey Jerry Bailey, 65, of Chester, Va., formerly of Glen Fork, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2007.

Evans Funeral Home of Oceana is serving the Bailey family.

George F. Baker

George F. Baker, 68, of Beckley, passed away Friday, May 11, 2007.

George was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Detroit, Mich. He spent his childhood in Crystal Beach, Fla., and graduated from Clearwater High School in 1957. George enjoyed Irish Road Bowling, artwork, and Christmas. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy, from which he retired as a Petty Officer. He was a retired Senior Aero Space Engineer from Raytheon Corporation in El Segundo, Calif. George was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church.

George was preceded in death by his parents Stanley O. Baker and Doris Haines Baker and his children Will-iam George and Brenda Carol.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Ruth Baker of Beckley; three children, Michael Baker and wife, Tobi Lynn, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Robert Holm of Bloomington, Calif., and Rebecca J. Callaway and husband, Andrew, of New Bern, N.C.; grandchildren, Rebecca T.M. and Travis Baker, and “AJ” Andrew Callaway Jr.; two brothers, Michael B. Baker and wife, Patricia, of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Paul D. Baker and wife, Betty, of Lake Butler, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, Beckley, with Father Sacus officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Oak Hill VFW.

Friends may gather with the family from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Prayer service will be held today at 8:30 p.m.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the services and support provided by the workers of the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley. Donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sylvia E. Castle

OAK HILL — Sylvia Castle, 84, of Oak Hill, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2007.

Thomas Wilson Deaner

Thomas Wilson Deaner, 59, of Lynchburg, Va., died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at his brother’s home in Brookneal.

Arrangements are pending with Diuguid Funeral Service.

Ersie M. Fox

Ersie M. Fox, 93, of Midway, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2007. Born Aug. 31, 1914, she is the daughter of the late Mason and Delphia Harrah.

Ersie is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a longtime member of the St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Francis. Ersie also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

In addition to her parents, Ersie is preceded in death by husband Rossie Fox; sisters Berchie Vandall, Maple Claypool, Deena Shiflett, Vada Dobbins, Margaret Trovato; brothers Mack Harrah, Clayton Harrah.

Those left to cherish her memory include nieces Vicky Hylton of Beckley, Gina Holshouser of Sevierville, Tenn., and several other nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 14, 2007, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, W.Va., with Father Samuel Sacus, Father Paul Hudak and Father John Duhaime officiating.

Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church.

Raymond Dennis Holcomb

OAK HILL — Raymond Dennis Holcomb, 73, of Oak Hill, passed away Friday, May 11, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Nov. 3, 1933, at Lookout, the son of the late George Cecil Holcomb and Grace Flint Holcomb.

Besides his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Jimmy Holcomb.

Dennis was a claims inspector for the State of West Virginia and was a sales manager in the mobile home industry. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife, Nancy Eades Holcomb; his son, James Holcomb; grandchildren, Zane, Grey and Jillian Holcomb; daughter-in-law, Sabrina Holcomb; a sister, Jo Ann Wood; brother-in-law, Jack Dale Eades and wife Elaine; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today with the Rev. Ben Gentile and the Rev. Mack Canterbury officiating, and where the family will receive friends from noon until time of the service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Effie M. Hunt, 83, of Meadow Bridge, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2007, in Beckley.

PRINCETON — Addis E. Kirk, 86, of 407 Princeton Ave., Princeton, died Saturday, May 12, 2007.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service hour at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Free Pentecostal Church of God, Rt. 2, Box 211, Bluefield, WV 24701, the Fairview Christian Community Church, Rt. 2, Box 279, Princeton, WV 24740, or the charity of your choice.

Elizabeth Kopcha, 91, of Beckley, died on Sunday, May 13, 2007, in a local hospital, after a long illness.

Michael Algie Paul O’Dell

Mickey O’Dell, age 58, 304 Lucas Drive, Beckley, W.Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, following a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, having been diagnosed on April 22, 2007.

Born Sept. 1, 1948, in Beckley, W.Va., Mickey was the son of the late Paul and Imogene Cottle O’Dell. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Okey and Gladys Lester of Glen White, W.Va., with whom he made his home during his teen years. His paternal grandparents, V.O. O’Dell and Isabelle Pridgen, as well as his mother-in-law Ann “Dolly” Sampson and Uncle Billy Cottle also preceded him in death.

He is survived at home by his wife of 38 years Sharon, his son Jonathan Michael O’Dell and his grandson Joseph Michael O’Dell, whom he loved dearly and for whom he fought so hard to live. There are also two other children whom he considered as grandchildren, Charlie Clay and Ryan Pittman of Sophia, W.Va.

Other survivors include his sister Vickie Lynn O’Dell, Richmond, Va.; brother David Patrick O’Dell, Portsmouth, Va.; father-in-law, Lawrence R. Sampson, Beckley, W.Va.; sister-in-law Marcia Sheets and husband Dana, Beckley, W.Va.; brothers-in-law Lawrence R. Sampson Jr. and wife Debbie, Wilkesboro, N.C., David Sampson and wife Natalie of Charleston, W.Va., and Greg Sampson, Charleston, W.Va. Other survivors include nephews Brian Sampson and wife Missy of Wilkesboro, N.C., Matt Sampson, Charleston, W.Va., Shawn Sheets currently serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq and wife Tabitha of Savannah, Ga.; and niece Mandi Sampson, Baltimore, Md. Additional survivors include a great-nephew Alex Sheets, Oak Hill, W.Va.; and great-nieces Kirsten Sheets, Oak Hill, W.Va., and Jada Sheets, Savannah, Ga. He is also survived by three aunts, Ida Mae Ford, Ramona Cottle and Mabel Sampson all of Beckley, W.Va.

Mickey was the Manager and Owner of NAPA Auto Parts Service Inc., Beckley, W.Va., for 25 years prior to selling the stores in 1995. Since his retirement, he enjoyed spending time and caring for family and friends. Mickey formerly coached Beckley Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball teams and supported Youth Activities in the area. He is a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Va., and has attended Lighthouse Baptist Church in Daniels, W.Va., for the past several years.

Services will be Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, W.Va., with Lighthouse Baptist Pastor Larry Cochran officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday, May 15, 2007, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, W.Va., and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, May 16, 2007.

Pallbearers will be Paul Mallamas, Eddie Hodges, Claude “Sarge” Maynard, David O’Dell, Greg Sampson, Lawrence Sampson Jr., David Sampson, and Dana Sheets. Grandsons will be honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Youth Bus Ministry at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 650 Grandview Road, Daniels, WV 25832.

Audra Gretta Pinckard, 99, beloved wife of the late Preston Irwin Pinckard, pass-ed away just shy of her 100th birthday on May 12, 2007, at her home for the past 13 years, Twin Towers, Cincinnati, Ohio.
