Laurel E. Smith

Laurel Eugene Smith, of Clear Fork Road, Beckley, formerly of Fort Fairfield, Maine, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Beckley VA Medical Center. He was 84 years of age.

Service and burial will be in Fort Fairfield.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.

John L. Wilcox

John L. Wilcox, 88, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center after a short illness.

He was a dedicated, loving husband, father and grandfather.

Born in Wyco, John L. grew up near Boone, N.C. He was the son of the late Arnold Glen and Hester Wilcox.

Most of his career he had his own coal-hauling business. He was also a service mechanic for Wilcox Manufacturing Co. He later was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the UMWA.

Besides being a hard-working provider for his family, he loved listening to the choir and attending his church of 57 years, Bluestone Baptist. He was very involved with his grandchildren and frequently went sledding with them on sleds he designed out of unique parts, such as conveyer belts. He also loved walking in the woods and hunting. He spent much time studying history, geography and geneology. He was an inventor and mechanic, and constantly thought of better ways to make things work. He was issued patents for a pneumatic coal conveying system and for a square-hole coal augering system. He also lovingly designed a large quilting frame for his wife, Virginia. He recently wrote an outline for a short biographical story in which he said he’d seen how the Lord was looking out for him all these years.

John. L. was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Basil, Arnold and A.G. Jr.; and two infant twin sisters, Ella Vee and Verna Lee.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Virginia Frances Harper Wilcox; sister, Ina Gross and husband, Kenneth, of Daniels; sister, Nina Eldridge and husband, Paul, of Stowe, Ohio; sister, Helen Anderson of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Douglas Wilcox and wife, Sally, of Shady Spring; sons, Pat Wilcox and wife, Carol, of Richmond, Va., and Curtis Wilcox and wife, Barbara, of Jumping Branch; daughters, Doris Newey and husband, Ray, of Roseburg, Ore., and Betty Day and husband, Stan, of Nimitz; 13 grandchildren, Deborah, Mark, Matthew, Marlys, Nathan, Loren, Ginny, Michael, Melanie, Heidi, Heather, Jon and Stefan; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Harper, Steve Stack, Jimmy Stack, Dennis Riffe, Donald Riffe, Alan Harper and Phillip Maddy. Honorary pallbearers will be Ruehl Meadows, Roy Lee Honaker, Earl Quesenbury and Clarence Bragg.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bluestone Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow at Crews cemetery, Nimitz.

Friends and family may call 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

Carolyn Jean Ash Williams

SCARBRO — Carolyn Jean Ash Williams, 65, of Route 1, Scarbro, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at her home.

Gussie E. Medley

HINTON — Gussie E. Medley, 81, of 129 Pleasant St., Hinton, died Tuesday even-ing, Dec. 19, 2006, in Summers County ARH following a long illness.

Born Aug. 8, 1925, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Mary Johnson Williams.

Mrs. Medley was a homemaker and was a member of Second Baptist Church of Hinton. She was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathaniel and Charles Williams; and two sisters, Mary Jackson and Helen Williams.

Survivors include her husband, John W. Medley; four sons, John Medley Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Kermit Medley of Elizabeth, N.J., David Medley of Hinton and Dennis Medley of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter, Cassandra Bolarinwa of Toledo; a brother, Robert Williams of Hinton; two sisters, Jane Roberts and Patricia Williams, both of Toledo; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. William Catus officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Curtis Elbert Mills

Curtis Elbert Mills, 88, of MacArthur, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

Born in Raleigh County on May 19, 1918, he was the son of the late Baxter and Onvia Lemon Mills.

Mr. Mills was a retired coal miner and was a former barber and welder. He was a member of the UMWA, the Woodrow Wilson High School Football Hall of Fame, and had received an Ivory Eagle mounted on a lump of coal for his athletic ability from Woodrow Wilson High School. Mr. Mills was a life member of Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606.

He was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Baxter Mills, and a brother, Arless Mills.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ada Mae Spangler Mills; two daughters, Miranda Maliborski and husband, Henry, of Longwood, Fla., and Carla Ball and husband, William, of Piedmont, S.C.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special care givers, Genny Wood, Betty Poe, Jean and Gary Cooper, Mary and Frank Baird, and Fred Yancey.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Friday.

William Alexander Nogosky Sr.

FORT MILL, S.C. — Will-iam Alexander Nogosky Sr., 73, of Fort Mill, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006.

Service will be 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at Clover (S.C.) First United Methodist Church. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover.

Ray Malcolm Richmond

REEDSPORT, Ore. — Ray Malcolm Richmond, 52, of Reedsport, formerly of Summers County, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Georgia Rhea Easterling Shumate

OAK HILL — Georgia Rhea Easterling Shumate, 68, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley after a short illness.

Born Aug. 12, 1938, at Lookout, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Oval E. and Lovadice Easterling.

Georgia was the last member of her immediate family. She was a homemaker and was very devoted to her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 49 years, Jimmy L. Shumate; daughters, Jennifer Bowling and her husband, David, of Oak Hill and Michelle Sumpter and her husband, Larry, of Oak Hill; her precious granddaughters, Cierra Sumpter and Bailey Bowling of Oak Hill; her sister-in-law, Treva Easterling of Fort Pierce, Fla.; brother-in-law, Clifford Cook of Stuart, Fla.; special cousins, Sophia and Phillip Rowe, Willa and Warren Millard, Patricia and Stanley Hill, Virginia and Jack Roberts, and Victor and Sherry Rowe, all of Fort Pierce; and several nephews and nieces.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family will have a brief memorial service at 6 p.m. Friday at First Brethern Church, Central Avenue, Oak Hill, where they will also visit with friends following the service. The Rev. William Skeldon will be presiding over both services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Canterbury Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

Stanley David ‘Bub’ Smith

MOUNT HOPE — Stanley David “Bub” Smith, 55, of Mount Hope, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a sudden illness.

Born July 12, 1951, at Swandale, he was the son of Wanda Paxton Acree and her husband, Nor-vel, of Clay, and the late Robert C. Smith.

Mr. Smith was a disabled police officer with over 20 years of service, having served in Gassaway, Gauley Bridge, Mabscott and Mount Hope. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having spent two tours in the Vietnam War.

Other than his mother, survivors include his wife of 21 years, Janice Wilburn Smith; two daughters, Tammy Hudson of Mount Hope and Melissa Smith of Gassaway; three sons, Rick Hudson and wife, Jaime, of Pax, Danny Duncan and wife, Rebecca, of Mount Hope and Melvin Conner of Gassaway; six grandchildren, Brandon Blevins, Derick Hudson, Dylon Hudson, Oliva Duncan, Alexis Duncan and Lucas Duncan; a brother, Johnny Smith of Summersville; three sisters, Sandra “Sis” Ely and husband, John, of Front Royal, Va., Emma Nutter and husband, Darrell, of Summersville and Joyce Sigler and husband, Randy, of Summersville; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with Pastor Gerald Proctor officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Blevins, Rick Hudson, Ricky Allen, Matt Wolf, Danny Duncan, Rick Blevins and Doug Adkins, with Derick and Dylon Hudson as honorary pallbearers.

Clarence Edward ‘Stumpy’ Taylor Jr.

MOUNT HOPE — Clarence Edward “Stumpy” Taylor Jr., 68, of Mount Hope, formerly of Glen Jean, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 25, 1937, at Harvey, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward Taylor and Lucinda Harris Taylor.

Mr. Taylor was a retired truck driver. He was a former member of First Baptist Church, Glen Jean. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended DuBois High School.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Robert Taylor; aunts, Mary Crawl Jones and Alberta Taylor; and uncle, Bill Taylor.

Survivors include his sister, Shirley O. Scott of Cincinnati, Ohio; an aunt, Helen Powell of Glen Jean; a friend, Mary Gray of Mount Hope; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Glen Jean, with the Rev. David F. Allen and the Rev. Richard Stevens officiating.

Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Roger Lee Plaster

LASHMEET — Roger Lee Plaster, 59, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ridgeview Church of God, Lashmeet. Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of the service Thursday at the church.

Vada M. Barker Redmond

Vada M. Barker Redmond, 87, of Hinton, died 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Harmony House at Lerona following a long illness.

Born Jan. 15, 1919, at Chapmanville, she was the daughter of the late Stonewall Jackson Barker Sr. and Ella Maude Berry Barker.

Mrs. Redmond was a homemaker, and a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Redmond, in 1979.

Survivors include two brothers, Stonie Barker Jr. of Naples, Fla., and Othar Ray Barker of Redland, Calif.; and two sisters, Melba Beckett of Logan and Barbara Gillispie of Covington, Va.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with the Rev. Walt Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
