Joe Steplowski

Joe Steplowski, 91, of Bradley, went to be with his loving wife, Bertha, on Sunday morning, June 18, 2006.

Born on April 2, 1915, in Barnesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late John Pete and Josephine Dering Steplowski.

Mr. Steplowski was a retired coal miner having worked 38 years in the industry, being last employed with Slab Fork Coal Company.

He was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill, being of the Catholic faith. Also a member of the UMWA District 29 Local 786, VFW Post No. 4326 of Sophia/Midway, American Legion Post 32, Beckley, AARP, he was a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge, Oak Hill No. 1664 and was also treasurer of Bradley Prosperity Fire Department for four years.

Mr. Steplowski had an honorable discharge as Corporal in the U.S. Army in 1945, prior to which he served in Germany, Central Europe, Rome, South France and Africa.

He enjoyed gardening until he was no longer able, then spent his time home watching baseball, boxing and wrestling on television.

Preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Marie Murdock Steplowski; four brothers, Stanley, Walter, Johnny and Steve Steplowski; and a stepson, Jackie Murdock.

Survivors include a son, Donald R. Steplowski and wife, Denise, of Bradley; a daughter, Sandy Steplowski Graham of Harper Heights; three grandchildren, Tarin Steplowski Humphrey and husband, Jimmy, of Mount Hope, Joseph Steplowski of Bradley and Denise Graham of Harper Heights; and one great-granddaughter, Sandra Nicole Graham.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, where a prayer vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m.

His final resting place will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with graveside military rites conducted by the VFW Post No. 4326 of Sophia/Midway.

Esperanza Aquino Hipolito Tamayo

Esperanza Aquino Hipolito Tamayo, 94, died May 28, 2006 in San Francisco, Calif.

Memorial Mass will be 7 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2006, at St. Francis de Sales Church. Dinner will follow after the Mass in the church hall basement.

Rev. James Fleisher Abshire

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Rev. James Fleisher Abshire, 84, a native of Auto, died Monday, June 19, 2006.

Graveside service with military rites will be 11 a.m. Friday at Woodland Church cemetery. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Jessie Lee Ashby

GATEWOOD — Jessie Lee Ashby, 88, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2006.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cunard Community cemetery, Cunard.

There will be no visitation.

Blanche E. Birchfield

BROOKLYN PARK, Md. — Blanche E. Birchfield, age 69, of died Friday, June 16, 2006, in Centreville, Md.

Ilene D. Boyd

Ilene D. Boyd of Cool Ridge, one precious mother, mammaw, greatgrandmaw and sister, born July 13, 1926, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, June 19, 2006, at the age of 79 years. She was a devoted employee of Pinecrest Hospital and retired after several years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Boyd of Princeton; her mother, Victoria Meadows Mills, and father, Oley Johnson Mills of Egeria; a sister, Nina Mills Graham; two brothers, Ernest Mills and Oley Dale Mills of Egeria; a half sister, Elastie Mills; and two half brothers, Delmer and Arbie Mills.

Survivors include three loving sons, Ron Boyd and wife, LaDonne, of North Carolina, Don Boyd and fiancé, Gladys Mastrantonio, of North, and Herbert D. Boyd and wife, Elizabeth, of Cool Ridge; three sisters, Fern Walker of Beaver, Dora Richardson of Rupert, and Lila Crookshanks of Rainelle; seven grandchildren, Don Boyd Jr. and wife, Teresa, Ursie Lucas and husband, Andy, Herbert R. Boyd and wife, Joanna, Beth Pittman and husband, Dave, Bret Boyd and fiancé Ellen, Amanda Boyd and Alyssa Boyd; eight great-grandchildren, Hailey, Dylan, Zachary, David Allen (BooBoo), Hunter, Dakota, Jacob and Tyler.

She enjoyed working in her flower garden, crocheting, sewing, quilting and raising her garden. She really enjoyed her green onions. But most of all, she loved and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they are the apple of her eye. She will be sadly missed by all of her family.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Charles Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Keaton Mills cemetery at Egeria.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edwin Duane Brunty

Edwin Duane Brunty, 63, of Piney View, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, June 19, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

Born Feb. 7, 1943, at Quinnimont, he was the son of the late Lee Brunty and Dorothy Radford Brunty Bailey.

Duane was a member of the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church and had worked as a brick mason.

Preceded in death by his stepfather, Don Bailey.

Left to cherish his memory, his wife, Margie Farley Brunty; a daughter, Sarah Richmond and husband, Darrell of Talcott; four grandchildren, Britni, Cortney, Veronica and Nicholas; stepmother, Dessell Brunty of Cottageville; three brothers, Verdis Brunty of Cottageville, Terry Brunty and wife, Ruth, of Piney View and Don Bailey and wife, Jean, of Piney View; five sisters, Martha Goble and husband, James, of Piney View, Vanese Cedar and husband, Kenneth, of Ravenswood, Vanessa Shockey and husband, Steve, Valenda Ranson and husband, Larry, and Valarie Rhodes, all of Ripley.

Service will be 12 noon Thursday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Phillip Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Roles Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the service on Thursday.

Ronald, Bill, John and Keith Farley, Don and Scott Bailey will serve as pallbearers.

George William Cook

ITMANN — George William Cook, 69, was last seen on Christmas night, 2002, and his remains were found March 23, 2004, on Pinnacle Creek. He will be laid to rest Saturday, June 24, 2006.

He was born July 3, 1933, at Wolf Pen and was the youngest of nine children of the late Ott Sanders Cook and Louvennie Ellen “Tinnie” Mullens Cook.

Mr. Cook was a retired coal miner who last worked at the US Steel, Itmann Mine. Before becoming a miner, he worked as a mechanic and service station manager at the old Itmann “Company” store. In his earlier years, he also had worked for several logging companies.

He loved being outdoors, observing nature, walking, shooting, hunting, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed reading about and talking about his English ancestors, the first settlers in Wyoming County and his Cherokee heritage. He gained much joy from his dogs, Sparkle and Lucy, who were his constant companions during his later years.

Mr. Cook’s wife of over 30 years, Carlee Parris Cook, passed away in October 1997; a stepdaughter, April Pickett Miller, passed away in October 2004; four sisters, Esther Beverly (husband, Bert, deceased), Cleatus Mullens (husband, Leonard, deceased), Bertie Lilly and Ruby Beverly (husband, Onnie, deceased); and two siblings died at birth.

Survivors include a brother, Collett Cook of Durham, N.C., (formerly of Wolf Pen); a sister, Hettie Jackson of Greenville, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Carlos “Mack” Lilly of Beckley; special nieces and nephews, including Paula Faye Cook of Durham, N.C., Gary Dean Cook Sr. of Beckley, Raymond Beverly of Wolf Pen, Louise Beverly Blaylock of Princeton, and Harry William Stanley Jr. of Pineville.

Friends and relatives will forever remember Mr. Cook’s honesty, generosity and compassion. He often assisted others in need while leading a quiet, simple life himself. He spent his youth helping to care for his father, a disabled coal miner who was bedridden for 19 years.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Charles “Butch” Acord officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Family cemetery on the Welch/Pineville Road.

Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a church, charity or Humane Society.

IRON STATION, N.C. — Maxine Dematteis, 80, formerly of Mullensville, died Monday, June 19, 2006, at her residence.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Dematteis family.

Myrtle Acord ‘Blackie’ Goff

Myrtle Acord “Blackie” Goff, of Lester, died suddenly at her home on Tuesday, June 20, 2006. She was 70 years of age.

Mildred Liberty Myers Harrah

FAYETTEVILLE — Mildred Liberty Myers Harrah, 88, of Fayetteville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at home following an extended illness.

Born April 3, 1918, at Turner, she was the daughter of the late Frank Roy Myers and Gertrude Mae Roush Myers.

Mrs. Harrah was a member of the Cotton Hill Baptist Church, Beckwith, where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Ladies Circle and a choir member. She was a loving wife and mother.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Ralph Darrell Harrah, on Jan. 25, 2004; a son, Ronnie Lee Harrah; five brothers, Delbert Bernard Myers, Corwin Dias Myers, James DeWitt Myers, Guy Stewart Myers and William “Bill” Franklin Myers; and a sister, Jenetta Myers Lucas.

Survivors include her four sons, Darrell F. Harrah and wife, Donna, of Kitty Hawk, N.C., Gary R. Harrah and wife, Sandy, of Ruskin, Fla., Larry E. Harrah and wife, Elaine, of Fayetteville, and Michael W. Harrah and wife, Mary, of Oak Hill; four daughters, Dreama G. Coleman and husband, Carlos, of Fayetteville, Louise Kaina and husband, Lani, of Newport News, Va., Beverly A. Workman and husband, Dale, of Fayetteville, and Brenda G. Plunkett and husband, Mickey, of Daniels; a brother, Lester Lee Myers of Fayetteville; four sisters, Flavia Myers Cole of Jefferson, Ohio, Donevia Myers Akers of Boomer, Betty Myers Henson and Gloria Jean Myers Jordan, both of Fayetteville; 32 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Beckwith, with the Rev. Danny Sears, Pastor Jerry Bush and Pastor Mike Legg officiating. Burial will follow in the Myers cemetery, Twenty Mile at Vaughan.

The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Beckwith.

Memorials may be made to the Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 884, Fayetteville, WV 25840.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern West Virginia and her caregivers for all their help in caring for their mom.

Cathleen Johnson Hinkle

RICHMOND, Ky. — Cathleen Johnson Hinkle, 100, formerly of Lewisburg, died April 1, 2006.

A memorial celebration will be held Friday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Lewisburg. The family will be receiving friends 10 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church.
