Mary Linda Jane Adkins Humphries

TALCOTT — Mary Linda Jane Adkins Humphries, 56, died 3:17 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2006, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 19, 1949, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Basil and Ocie “Verna” Bennett Adkins. A former employee of Simmon’s Foodland, she worked as a dispatcher for the City of Hinton Police Department for many years, and was a member of the Hinton Gospel Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond “Sonny” Graham and Eugene ‘Gene” Adkins; and a sister, Geraldine Wills.

She is survived by two sons, David Humphries and wife, Cheryl, of Blue Ridge, Va., and Troy Humphries of Talcott; former husband and friend, Gilbert Petrey of Hilldale; and four grandchildren, Kyle and Emilee Humphries of Blue Ridge, Va., and T.J. and Harley Humphries of North Carolina.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Upland cemetery near Hinton.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral parlors.

Samuel Jackson

ATLANTA, Ga. — Samuel Jackson, 52, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, June 19, 2006, in Atlanta, Ga.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Stewart C. Lilly

Stewart Calvin Lilly, beloved husband and father, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Stewart is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Jo Helmintoller Lilly; his two sons, Michael Stewart Lilly and Rayman L. Lilly; and his daughter, Hallie Lilly Merry, all of Augusta. He was 68.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday, June 22, in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son.

Honorary Pallbearers are Alan Michelzyck, Willy Dickerson, Rich Aglio, Jimmy Wheeler, Gary Arthur and Thomas Giffen.

Stewart was born in Jumping Branch, W.Va., on July 27, 1937. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1955. After high school, he entered the Air Force. He joined Continental Can in 1959 and worked at their Hopewell, VA and Augusta Plants. He retired in 2001 after 40 years of service from International Paper as a safety instructor at the Augusta plant.

Stewart lived in Augusta 31 years. He was a member and deacon of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was actively involved in sports his entire life. He played football in high school, was an avid golfer and handball player, and he coached teams which included both his sons.

Stewart considered his most important achievement his family, which includes six grandchildren to whom he was devoted: Robert Cozart, Kay Lilly, Jonathon Lilly, Jordan Lilly, Mason Lilly and Veronica Merry. Stewart exemplified the values from his upbringing in the mountains of West Virginia. He was kind, considerate and faithful; he knew no strangers.

Other immediate survivors include his mother, Reva M. Lilly, of Jumping Branch, W.Va.; two sisters, Margie (Gary) Arthur of Ona, W.Va., and Andora (Tom) Giffen of Bluefield, VA., nieces including Shelley (Kelly) Harbour of Milton, W.Va., Angela (John) Lewis of Ona, W.Va., Jennifer (Erik) Vaderson of Savannah, Ga. and Greta (Brian) Valeyko of Alexandria, Va.; an uncle, Paul Farley, Midway, W.Va., and an aunt Amma Bragg, Hopewell, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 3551 Wheeler Rd. Augusta, Georgia 30909.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd. Augusta, GA 30907. (706)364-8484.

Carl ‘Buck’ Platter Sr.

Carl Henry “Buck” Platter Sr., 97, of Harper, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2006, in the Heartland of Beckley, after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1908, in Garrett County, Md., a son of the late Silas and Bertha Herman Platter.

Buck was active in the family business of coal, timber, horses and ice storage throughout the teens and 1920s. During the 1930’s, after meeting “Dixie,” who would become his lifelong wife, friend, business partner and mother of four children, his vocational interests began to narrow. Alongside his elder brother “Young,” business ventures into auto dealerships, mechanic shops and auto racing evolved.

Serving in the Navy See Bees, Buck actively participated in the Pacific during World War II. He and Dixie together owned and operated a large beef farm in southern Ohio and utilized his private pilot license by having several small aircraft. Buck continued to maintain an active interest in coal production during the 1940’s and 1950’s. In the 1960’s and early 1970’s, Buck’s expertise as a master diesel mechanic was recognized and respected. Fully retiring in 1974, “UMWA” Daddy and Mother Platter wintered in Florida, traveled the East Cost and selected Harper as a permanent residence. They brought harm to none.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola “Dixie” Evans Platter, who passed away May 2005; a son, Carl Jr. who passed Oct. 2004; two nephews, Johnnie Pourtless Jr., who passed Oct. 2003, and Rev. Marvin Platter, who passed Dec. 2005; a brother, Rev. Herman “Young” Platter and three sisters, Ethel Durst, Pearl Beavers and Buelah Barnes.

He is survived by two daughters, Jean Ann Lemon and husband, Ronne, of South Shore, Ky., and Gallipolis, Ohio, Mary Lee Smith and husband, Lloyd, of Pataskala, Ohio; a son, Jack S. Platter Sr. and wife, Donna, of Harper; daughter-in-law, Kay Platter and husband, Carl, of Middleport, Ohio, and Ormond Beach, Fla.; sisters, Hilda Pourtless of St. Petersburg, Fla., Edna Wolf of Oakland, Md.; a nephew, Bill Wolf of Ridgley, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and the wonderful compassionate caregivers at the Heartland of Beckley.

Graveside service were held 12 noon Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Pineview cemetery at Orgas with Brother in Christ, Ralph Stanley Dickens officiating. Burial followed in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to Southern Appalachian Labor Schools, P.O. Box 127, Kincaid, WV 25119.

Esperanza Aquino Hipolito Tamayo

Esperanza Aquino Hipolito Tamayo, 94 years old, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2006, in San Francisco, Calif. May she rest in peace.

She was born in San Fernando, Philippines, on Dec. 16, 1911.

She attended medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She was married to the late Eulogio Ronquillo Tamayo, a civil engineer.

She is survived by her children, Maria Nannette Yabut of New York, Carlos H. Tamayo of New Jersey, Julieta T. Militante of New Jersey, Jose H. Tamayo of Port Pierce, Fla., and Dr. Raul H. Tamayo and Tess Tamayo, of Beckley, 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be 7 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2006, at St. Francis de Sales Church. Dinner will follow after the Mass in the church hall basement.

Troy Wayne Anderson

RAINELLE — Troy Wayne Anderson, 15, of Midland Trail Campground, died suddenly late Thursday night, June 15, 2006, near his home.

Born May 1, 1991, at Fairlea, he was the son of Patricia Carrol Bragg Bennett of Marfrance and J.P. Anderson of Corliss.

Troy was a student in the seventh grade at Nuttall Middle School in Lookout.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Alan Bragg.

Survivors include his mother, Patricia Bennett and husband, Michael, of Marfrance; father, J.P. Anderson of Corliss; twin brother, Trey Anderson of Corliss and Marfrance; paternal grandparents, James and Marta Anderson of Spring Dale; maternal grandparents, Vicky O’Dell of Charmco and Jerry Bragg of Rainelle; paternal great-grandparents, Ernest and Dortha Anderson of Corliss; and maternal great-great grandmother, Charlotte Sheppard of Charmco.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Dale Priest officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family requests donations of sympathy be made to a trust fund set up at City National Bank, 1218 Main St., Rainelle, WV 25962.

Blanche E. Birchfield

PASADENA, Md. — Blanche E. Birchfield, 69, of Pasadena, died Friday, June 16, 2006, in Centreville, Md.

Born Feb. 19, 1937, in Pasadena, she was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Margaret M. Foster Couch.

Mrs. Birchfield was a graduate of Glen Burnie High School, Glen Burnie, Md., and married her husband, John H. Birchfield, on Jan. 14, 1954. She assisted her husband in their business, John’s Roofing Co., Inc., and enjoyed being with her family, knitting, ceramics and bingo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1996, and a son, Mark W. Birchfield, in 2000.

Survivors include a son, Michael J. Birchfield of Stevensville, Md.; a brother, Edward L. Couch of Brooklyn Park, Md.; three granddaughters, Crystal L., Lisa Marie Birchfield and Michele Lee Birchfield, all of Florida; a grandson, John Andrew Birchfield of Florida; and three great-grandchildren, Jasmin N. and Kevin C. Reid and Anthony M. Thomas.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Lester First Church of God with the Rev. Earl Snuffer officiating. Burial will follow in Birchfield cemetery, Lester.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Birchfield to the American Cancer Society, Charleston WV Officer, Suites 6 & 7, 301 RHL Blvd., Charleston WV 25309.

Family member will serve as pallbearers.

Wilda Boggess of Beckley died Wedneday, June 21, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Earl Dolin

OAK HILL — Earl Dolin, 74, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley.

Born Aug. 15, 1931, at Cabin Creek, he was the son of the late Estes and Nancy “Nannie” Canterbury Dolin.

Earl was a retired coal miner and section foreman for Semet Solvey at Harewood.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been a Prisoner of War during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack, and two sisters, Christine and Betty.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Foster Dolin; a daughter, Selena Aromin of Oak Hill; a son, Kevin Dolin and wife, Tara, of Raleigh, N.C.; five brothers, Gene C. Clay of Beards Fork, Larry Dolin of Florida, Bob Dolin of Cincinnati, Ohio, James Clay of California and Ed Dolin of Summersville; two sisters, Diana McLaughlin of Charlotte, N.C., and Mary Des Autels of Key West, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jourdan Aromin of Beckley, Austin Powers and Hanna Powers of Oak Hill, and Ashley Dolin, Taylor Grace Dolin and Jordan Alexander, all of North Carolina.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating.

Friends may call noon until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Myrtle ‘Blackie’ Goff

On Tuesday, June 20, 2006, Myrtle “Blackie” Goff died peacefully at her home at Lester. She was 70 years of age.

Born Myrtle Acord on March 17, 1936, at Bolt, she was the daughter of the late John O. and Minnie Dickens Acord.

Known affectionately as “Blackie” all her life, she had spent her early years at Bolt. A resident of the Lester community the past 35 years, Myrtle was of the Christian faith.

In her leisure time she enjoyed working in her yard. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jim Pettery, and a special brother, Bill Acord.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Russell Goff Sr.; six sons, Joe Hudson and Stanley Goff at home, Russell Goff and his wife, Billie, of MacArthur, Bobby Goff and his companion, Faith Grizzle, of Daniels, Phillip Goff and his wife, Betty, of Glen White and Wesley Goff and his wife, Lisa, of Lester; two daughters, Martha Pettery of Lester and Cindy Duncan and her husband, Nelson, of Glen White; a sister, Helen Acord of Lester; 28 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Kenneth Parent officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call noon until time of service Friday.

Pallbearers will be her sons, Don Bailey and Josh Goff.

Michael Eugene Griffin

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Michael Eugene Griffin, formerly of Lenoir City, Tenn., died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Emory University Medical Center, Atlanta, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Oare Griffin; a daughter, Chris (Lisa) Oxley and grandson, Jackson, of Beckley; parents, Paul and Helen Williams Griffin of Loudon, Tenn.; sisters, Jane Accardino of Arizona and Mrs. Mark (Christine) Appleby of Savannah, Ga.; a brother, Steve Griffin of South Korea; and a stepson, Arthur R. Vascherault of Stillwater, N.Y.

Service will be 7 p.m. today at Loudon Funeral Home Chapel, 2048 Mulberry St., Loudon, Tenn., with the Rev. Bobby Lawson officiating.

Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday for graveside service at City cemetery, Lenoir City.

The family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
