Vicki Sue Jones

Vicki Sue Jones, 53, of Soak Creek, passed away Monday, June 19, 2006.

Born May 27, 1953, in Beckley, Vicki was a graduate of Sophia High School.

Vicki was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harrison and Edith Mills, and her mother, Macy “Dimpy” Windon.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two daughters, Tracy Tara Johnston and husband, Dan, of Charlotte, N.C., and Jessica Lynn Jones Hunt of Coal City; sister, Tena Payne and husband, Byron, of Morgantown; two grandchildren, Jacob McKinley Jones Hunt and Nicholas Wayne Jones Hunt; nephew, Byron Ray Payne of Morgantown; father of Tracy Johnston, Bob Johnston of Fayetteville; former husband, Larry W. Jones; loving fiancé, Rick Lester; and best friend, Judy Cochran of Jenson Beach, Fla.

In keeping with Vicki's wishes, her body was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Hallie Mae Kessinger

Hallie Mae Kessinger, of 104 Catlett St., Beckley, entered into the gates of Heaven on the 20th day of June 2006. Hallie was born to Joe Wills and Nettie Wills-Reed on June 24, 1912, at Eccles, moving to Beckley in 1921.

Mrs. Kessinger worked as a homemaker and as a seamstress, working for Grace Wilkes Dress Shop and for herself for the greater part of her glory years. She married James E. Kessinger in 1939.

Left to mourn her passing are her children, Nancy L. Gragg and Frank H. Wills; sister, Thelma Rose Hale of Bainbridge, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Irene Kessinger of Beckley, Helen Davis of Pennsylvania and Francis Moatioan of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Tammy McCollam Romage and her husband, Dan, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Hallie Kay “Katie” Parris-Lovelace and her husband, Jim, of Crestview, Fla., Dawn Marie Gragg of Richlands, Va., Lora Wills-Lilly of Beckley, James P. Wills of Tomah, Wis., Donald R. Gragg Jr. of Shady Spring, Jason C. Wills of Cool Ridge and Justin R. Wills of Beaver; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Daniel Christopher, Lynsi, Derek, Nikolas, Sara, Kaysi, Jamieson, Logan and Ethan; and many nieces and nephews.

Special friends are listed as Carmela Hewell, Zelda and Barbara Futterman, Tim Foster and Debbie and Virginia Griffith.

Mrs. Kessinger was preceded in death by her husband, James Kessinger; a sister, Edith (Curley) Via of Beckley; and a brother, Howard H. Wills of Bluefield,.

Pallbearers will be James P. Wills, Donald R. Gragg Jr., Peter Staton, Justin R. Wills, Dan Romage and John McGee Jr. “Little John.”

Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Christopher Romage, Derek Lovelace, Kenny Trent, James N. Lovelace (serving on active duty deployed), Jason Wills, Justin Wills and Tim Foster.

Lord’s songs will be sung by Krista Hughes, stepdaughter of Justin Wills.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley. Ministering the service will be the Rev. John McGee and Brother Danny Winders. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Patricia Huddleston
‘Patsy’ Lester

MONTGOMERY — Patricia Huddleston “Patsy” Lester, 67, formerly of Fayetteville and Cannelton, died June 20, 2006, in Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.

She was born Sept. 4, 1938, at Monarch, Kanawha County, and was the daughter of the late Harold and Vennie Priddy Boyd.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Lester; her brother, Harold Boyd Jr.; and her former husband and father to Lisa, Gene Huddleston.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Dravenstott and her husband, Ronnie, of Charlton Heights; grandsons, Bradley and Zachary Dravenstott; sisters and their husbands, Nancy and Paul Duncan of Cannelton, Dolores Howard of Cannelton, Juanita and David Cottrell of Cannelton and Shirley Dunlap of Cannelton; brother and his wife, Darryl “Duffy” and Barbara Boyd of Fayetteville; her beloved dog, Lady; and several nieces and nephews.

Patsy will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

At Patsy’s request, there will be no visitation or service.

O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, is in charge of arrangements.

Chester ‘Red’ A. Lewis

Chester “Red” A. Lewis, 81, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006. He was the son of the late Joseph and Beulah Lewis.

Chester was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was also of Baptist faith.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Beulah; wife, Iris Cobb Lewis; sons, Ronald Cobb and Donald Ray Lewis; and grandson, Christopher Chambers.

Those left to cherish his memory include daughters, Linda Chambers and husband, Charles, of Mabscott, Trina Cox and husband, Thomas, of Daniels, Karen Pack and husband, John, of Abingdon, Va., and Sharon Snyder of Odenton, Md.; grandsons, Michael Chambers, Thomas Cox and Jonathan Cox, and granddaughter, Melissa Lusk; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters, Juanita Bishop of Roseville, Mich., Lonnie Lewis of Indiana and Mary Stewart of Hamilton, Ohio; and brother, James Lewis of Bristol, Tenn.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Larry Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with family one before service.

Stewart C. Lilly

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Stewart Calvin Lilly, beloved husband and father, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Stewart is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Jo Helmintoller Lilly, his two sons, Michael Stewart Lilly and Raymon LaMont Lilly; and his daughter, Hallie Lilly Merry, all of Augusta. He was 68.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. today in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son, Augusta.

Honorary pallbearers are Alan Michelzyck, Willy Dickerson, Rich Aglio, Jimmy Wheeler, Gary Arthur and Thomas Giffen.

Stewart was born in Jumping Branch on July 27, 1937. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1955. After high school, he entered the Air Force. He joined Continental Can in 1959 and worked at their Hopewell, Va., and Augusta plants. He retired in 2001 after 40 years of service from International Paper as a safety instructor at the Augusta plant.

Stewart lived in Augusta 31 years. He was a member and deacon of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was actively involved in sports his entire life. He played football in high school, was an avid golfer and handball player, and he coached teams which included both his sons. Stewart considered his most important achievement his family, which includes six grandchildren to whom he was devoted: Robert Cozart, Kay Lilly, Jonathan Lilly, Jordan Lilly, Mason Lilly and Veronica Merry. Stewart exemplified the values from his upbringing in the mountains of West Virginia. He was kind, considerate and faithful, and he knew no strangers.

Mr. Lilly was preceded in death by his father, Audrey W. Lilly.

Other immediate survivors include his mother, Reva M. Lilly of Jumping Branch; two sisters, Margie Arthur of Ona and Andora Giffen of Bluefield, Va.; nieces, Shelley Harbour of Milton, Angela Lewis of Ona, Jennifer Vaderson of Savannah, Ga., and Greta Valeyko of Alexandria, Va.; a special uncle, Paul Farley of Midway; and a special aunt, Amma Bragg of Hopewell, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 3551 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909.

Linda Lou Aliff

Linda Lou Aliff, of Bolt, went home to heaven on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

Born May 24, 1947, at Dorothy, a daughter of Martha Pettry of Sundial, and the late Kenneth Pettry.

She was a very special mother; she was loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She attended Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estel W. Aliff.

Besides her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Kendall Miller and companion, Carl Peaytt, of Sophia, Melinda Bowman and husband, Mark, of Sundial; a son, Kenneth Aliff of Bolt; two sisters, Bonny Dickens and husband, Jerry, of Masseyville, Martha Pettry and husband, Phil, of Colcord; two brothers, Howard Kenneth Pettry and wife, Rebecca, and Ricky Pettry, all of Sundial; six grandchildren, Patricia Davis and husband, Jay, of Rock Creek, Odell Russell and Jessica Russell, both of Marmet, Mark Bowman and Holli Bowman, both of Sundial, Luke Aliff of Whitesville; a great-grandson, Zack Bowman of Sundial; special aunt, Cassie Bailey; special cousin, Linda Scott; a very special niece and best friend, Isabell Dickens of Masseyville; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who loved her very much.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Jake Maynard officiating. Interment will follow in Miller cemetery, Rock Creek.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home

Pallbearers will be Mark Bowman, Carl Peaytt, Ricky Pettry, Jonathon Scott, Brian Sesco and Kenny Dickens.

The family would like to thank everyone who came and prayed with her.

Nancy Foster

Nancy Foster, age 95, of 328 Myers Ave., Beckley, formerly of 104 Roosevelt St., Beckley, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at the home of her daughter Doris “Lucy” Quesenberry following a long illness.

Polly Bailey Brewer

PINEVILLE — Polly Bailey Brewer, 81, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1924, at Baileysville, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles B. and Nettie Short Bailey.

Mrs. Brewer was a member of Pineville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a retired elementary teacher from the Wyoming County Board of Education and was named Teacher of the Year in the 1982-1983 school year. Mrs. Brewer was a 1943 graduate of Baileysville High School, where she was the valedictorian, and was a graduate of Concord College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She was a member of WVEA, NEA, American Legion Auxiliary, Varney Cline Post 133, A.P.I. and a former member of Baileysville Woman’s Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Brewer Jr.

Survivors include two cousins, Thomas Eugene Moody of Brenton and Judy Mason of Fanrock; and her church family.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 12 noon until time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Brewer’s name to Pineville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 382, Pineville, WV 24874.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Brewer family.

Harvey M. Christie

SPRINGFIELD — Harvey M. Christie, better known as “Chef Harv,” died Friday morning, Dec. 1, 2006, at the scene of a single-car accident while driving his van on WV 28.

A native of Monroe County, he was the son of Patricia V. Dore and the late James Christie. He was a graduate of Greenbrier East High School in Fairlea. He had a love of cooking, using many of the herbs grown on the family farm in Sinks Grove. With his interest growing rapidly, he began in his own kitchen making jellies, jams and vinegars.

In 1989, he opened his own business, Diversified Nature Associates in Pickaway. In 1998, he moved to Hampshire County and established Gourmet Central. Some of his clients included the Greenbrier Resort, Stonewall Resort, the Homestead in Virginia and the Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. In addition, he made countless personal appearances, organized culinary events, worked the Cast Iron Cookoff and the high school Pro Start cooking program. His love of cooking was apparent and infectious, and he brought great enthusiasm to all his work. He was well known in West Virginia for his appearances on West Virginia Cooks on PBS, which he hosted for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Christina Payne Christie, daughter Catie Christie, son Gabriel Christie, his mother and stepfather, Pat and Mike Dore, sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Tom Gentry, brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Jeannie Christie, brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Elizabeth Christie, grandfather, J. Curtis Van Dyke and wife, Jacki, uncle James Van Dyke and wife, Pat, aunt, Linda Stevens and husband, Dewey, and several nieces and nephews.

Christie was a member of Clinton Lodge 84 AF and AM, and Ali Ghan Shrine Temple.

The family honored his request to be cremated. A celebration of his life is planned at Stonewall Resort and will be announced at a later date.

TOMMY HALL ROAD — Billy Lee Cochrum, 53, a native of Clintonville, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 3006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Asbury. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle,a nd onehour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
