Larry Gene DalPorto

Larry Gene DalPorto, 60, of 24 Fairford Circle, formerly of Chesapeake, Va., died Sunday, December 3, 2006 at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Kelley DalPorto, who passed away on Oct. 8, 2005.

Born in Montgomery, W.Va., he was a son of Margaret June Polley DalPorto of Oak Hill, W.Va., and the late Reno DalPorto of Virginia Beach, Va.

Mr. DalPorto was a retired carpenter and was a Catholic. He was an avid bowler and managed multiple bowling allies in the Virginia Beach area.

Surviving are a sister, Diane Carper of Taylors, S.C; two brothers, Terry DalPorto of Elgin, S.C., and David Kitchen of Atlanta, GA.; and his constant companion, a “Corgie” dog, C.J. Twerp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3535 Pelham Road, Suite 101, Greenville, SC 29615.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in Virginia.

Virginia Mae Goins Martin

ALDERSON — Virginia Mae Goins Martin, age 90, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 22, 1916, on Backus Mountain in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Lakey Fox Goins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orvin Riffe Martin; an infant daughter; a sister, Mamie Boggess; and four brothers, Elwood Goins, Lawrence Goins, Delbert Goins and Harrison Goins.

In the early years, Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and helped her husband on their farm that was on Big Branch Road, near Alderson. Following the death of her husband, she moved to the town of Alderson and became a cook at Alderson Schools. She retired from the Greenbrier County Board of Education as head cook at Alderson Schools, retiring after 35 years of service. Mrs. Martin will always be remembered for her rolls. She was also an employee of Camp Greenbrier for Boys, Alderson, for 35 years during the summer months. For many years, Mrs. Martin was an active participant in the Alderson Fourth of July Celebration by overseeing and assisting with the Fourth of July Luncheon and Homecoming Banquet. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Martin Kincaid and her husband, Morris, of Newport News, Virginia; a brother, Bill Goins of Lester; three sisters, Nadine Pugh of Backus Mountain, Louise Tincher and her husband, Durwood, of Rupert, and Geneva Heaster and her husband, Ralph, of Smoot; many nieces and nephews and a special thanks to her caregivers, her niece, Mildred Meadows, Barbara Duff, and Carol Holt.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at the Alderson cemetery, Alderson, West Virginia with Pastor Jonathan Comer officiating. Burial will follow in the Alderson cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 5, 2006, at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

Martha Elizabeth Mills

MOUNT HOPE — Martha Elizabeth Mills, 25, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006.

Born May 13, 1981, she is the daughter of Fred and Linda Stover Mills.

Martha loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a 1999 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended WV Tech.

Martha was employed as a supervisor in the women’s apparel department at J.C. Penny.

Martha is preceded in death by her father, Fred Ernest Mills; and fiancé, Zach Worthington.

Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Linda Stover Mills, of Beckley; sister Lynda Scarbro and husband, Ha-rold Dwane, of Beckley; brother Fredric Burke Mills of Beckley; nieces; Miranda Scarbro; Emily Scarbro; Katelyn Mills; Kelly Mills; nephew Michael Scarbro; and best friend Valerie Hannah.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Forest Gray officiating.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Painter cemetery at Maynor.

Merle Gray Morgan

RONCEVERTE — Merle Gray Morgan, 74, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va.

Merle was born Jan. 10, 1932, at Ronceverte, and was a son of the late Virgil Joel and Agnes Hona-ker Morgan.

Mr. Morgan attended Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Ronceverte, was a retired security guard with over 38 years of service with the Greenbrier Hotel, and was a member of the Elks Country Club. In 1959 Merle was presented the Governor Okey L. Patteson Award for Best Soldier of West Virginia and was a Retired Master Sergeant of Howitzer Battery, First Squadron 150th Armored Calvary of Ronceverte National Guard having served for 25 years.

Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Norma R. Massey Morgan in 1993, a daughter, Pamela Sue in 1954, a sister, Marylea Marquez and a brother, Virgil Robert “Bob” Morgan.

Survivors include two sons, Michael G. Morgan and wife, Kimberly of Monroe, N.C., and Mitchell G. Morgan and wife, Terrie, of Lewisburg; three grandchildren, Amy Morgan of Pittsburgh, Pa., Keri Morgan of Lewisburg, and Brittany Sele of Monroe, N.C.; and a special friend, Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Taylor of Ronceverte.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Ronceverte with Elder Jimmy Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Morgan cemetery in Ronceverte with military rites.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home in Ronceverte.

NORTH SPRING — Arthur Mack Cline, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church, Baisden. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Frederick Joe Cochran

FRANKFORD — Frederick Joe Cochran, 68, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Friends may call 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Paul Arnold Foley Sr.

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Paul Arnold Foley Sr., 55, of Lakewood Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mr. Foley was born Oct. 16, 1951, in Wyoming County to Bertha Reeder Foley of Mocksville and the late Arnold Foley. He was retired from Shoaf Concrete and was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. Mr. Foley was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Geneva Marie Sizemore; and a sister, Zada Lafferty.

In addition to his mother of Mock Place, he is survived by his wife, Dianna McKinney Foley; two daughters, Paula Foley Swearengin of Lester and Christina Lynn Bennett and husband, Stevie, of Walnut Cove, N.C.; six sons, Paul Arnold Foley Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Beckley, Everette Shawn Foley of Iroquois, William Paul Foley and wife, Michelle, of Mocksville, Jason Christopher Foley and wife, Jamie, of Iroquois and Coy Lee Reed and Randy Ray Reed, both of Mocksville; two sisters, Betty Leona Perry of Harrisonburg, Va., and Linda Ann Perry and husband, Junior, of Tomahawk, Ky.; a brother, Roy Curtis Foley and wife, Gladys, of Archer City, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Gospel Baptist Church, Mocksville, with the Rev. Kevin Hobson officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.

The family requests that memorials be considered for Gospel Baptist Church, Main Church Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. The family would like to extend special thanks to Gospel Light Baptist Church for their gifts, visits and prayers during Mr. Foley’s illness. May God richly bless each of you.

Thomas M. Fraley Jr.

SUMMERSVILLE — Thomas M. Fraley Jr., 57, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Summersville Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of Dessie Tackett Fraley Newell of Olive Hill, Ky., and the late Thomas M. Fraley Sr., and was born in Huntington on Nov. 9, 1949.

He was a coal miner for Alex Energy in Summersville, a retired employee of Bethlehem Steel and a member of Summersville Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his mother include his wife, Sue Hall Fraley; two sons, Thomas Fraley III and wife, Tammy, of Sumter, S.C., and William Tee Fraley and wife, Rebecca, of Athens; two grandchildren, James Thomas and Gillian Rose; three brothers, David Earl Fraley of Lexington, Ky., Jeff Newell of Olive Hill and Jim Newell of Marmet; mother-in-law, Verna Hall of Olive Hill; and brother-in-law, James Hall and wife, Kathy, of Mansfield, Ohio.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Summersville Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Damon Rhodes and Pastor Jim Malick officiating. Burial will follow in Walker Memorial Park, Summersville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Summersville Memorial United Methodist Youth, 1317 Webster Road, Summersville, W.Va. 26651.

Charles Wallace Gum

Charles Wallace Gum, 88, born June 12, 1918, near Mill Point, son of the late Charles Emory and Rachel Ruckman Gum and a resident of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

On May 28, 1954, he married Melissa Gwinn Payne. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2000.

Mr. Gum was a 1936 graduate of Hillsboro High School and received his B.A. degree from Fairmont State College, magna cum laude, 1947, and his M.A. from George Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., in 1948. He taught three years in Pocahontas County, six years in Fayette County and served as principal in Warren County, Ohio, and 21 years in Middletown City Schools in Butler County, Ohio, from which he retired in 1979.

Charles was drafted into the military service April 26, 1941. He served in the 201st Antitank Company at Fort Greeley, Kodiak, Alaska, for 15 months after which he was transferred to the Antitank Company, 350th Infantry, 88th Division as a reconnaissance non-commissioned officer at Camp Gruber, Okla. The 88th Division was the first all draftee division placed in combat in the European Theater. He arrived at the front lines March 4, 1944, north of Naples at Minturno, Italy, and was the first allied division to enter Rome on June 5, 1944, and continued to the Italian Alps at Bassano, Italy, until May 2, 1945, at the surrender of the Italian and German armies in Italy.

He received many service awards, including Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Sharpshooter Badge, American Defense Medal with Foreign Service Bar (often designated the Pre-Pearl Harbor Service Medal), Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with bronze campaign star, American Theater Service Medal, European-African-Middle East Service Medal with three campaign stars: 1. Rome-Arno, 2. Northern Apennines, 3. Po Valley, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged Aug. 11, 1945, Fort George G. Meade, Md., after 52 months of service of which 36 months were overseas duty.

Mr. Gum was a 60-year member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, where he assisted in writing the latest addition to the history of the church. He was a member of the Fayette County Historical Society and served as a tour guide at the George W. Eads Museum and “Contentment,” the home of George W. Imboden, lieutenant colonel, CSA, in Ansted. He also assisted in writing and editing the 1993 Fayette County History.

Survivors include sister, Madeline Ruth Gum Ruckman of Selma, N.C.; brother, Max L. Gum of Buckeye; five nieces and five nephews.

A sister, Verna Kathleen Gum Robbins, and a brother, Alfred Renick Gum Sr., preceded him in death.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home with Dr. John Sauvage officiating. Entombment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3110, Oak Hill.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Payne, Buren Payne, Glen Warden, Karl Williams, Glenn Morris and Lowell Payne.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Fayette County Historical Society, HC 66 Box 94, Hico, WV 25854, or Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 205 E. Main St., Oak Hill, WV 25901.

John Franklin Hindson IV

FAYETTEVILLE — John Frank-lin Hindson IV, 31, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Gloria Mullens Huffman

Gloria Mullens Huffman, of 379 Mankin Ave., Beckley, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at her home.

Born in Cabell County, she was the daughter of the late George W. McClellan and Goldie Mae Cline McClellan.

Mrs. Huffman was a resident of Raleigh County from an early age. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated from nurses training at McMillan Hospital in Charleston. She was a retired nurse of 33 years, having last worked at Pinecrest Hospital. Gloria was a member of First Christian Church for 50 years and presently a member of Cranberry Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Mullens; second husband, Robert Huffman; a brother, Ray McClellan; and a son, Thomas R. Mullens.

Survivors include a sister, Rose Ruby of Grass Valley, Calif.; granddaughter, Tavijva Perez of Fort Myers, Fla.; grandson, Thomas Mullens II of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; grandson, Thomas Lafferty; her little dog Teddy (a gift from her son); and white cat, Snow.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cranberry Baptist Church, 201 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, W.Va. 25801.
