NIMITZ — Elder David Hiram Lilly, 81, died at 5:05 a.m. Wednesday Dec. 6, 2006, at Summers County ARH in Hinton.

Ethel Mae (Goddard) Lively

FAYETTEVILLE — Ethel Mae (Goddard) Lively, 86, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, following a nine-month illness.

Born March 23, 1920, at Lawton, she was a daughter of the late James David and Florence Fink Goddard.

Mrs. Goddard was a member of Beckwith Apostolic Church and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenville E. Lively; children, James Barker and Lomax Lively; and siblings, James David Goddard Jr., Bertha Shifflet, Evelyn Cummings and Lucille Bunch.

Survivors include daughters, Lynda Paris of Baltimore, Md., Deborah Meadows and husband, Steve, of Fairmont and Kathryn Barnett and husband, Steve, of Beaufort, S.C.; sons, Robert Barker of Anaheim, Calif., Richard Barker and wife, Irene, of Fayetteville and Gary Lively and wife, Connie, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters, Irene Ward of Beckley, Betty Bennett and husband, Hubert, of Beckley, Pauline Morris of Elgin, Ill., and Patsy Ritter and husband, Roger, of Nolanville, Texas; brothers, Harold Goddard and wife, Goldie, of Kansas City, Mo., Bobby Goddard and wife, Jean, of Chicago, Ill., and Steve Goddard and wife, Evy, of Union City, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Apostolic Church with the Rev. G.G. Crist and the Rev. Randy Pitsenbarger officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Goddard cemetery, Backus Mountain, Meadow Bridge.

Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Flora E. Lockwood

SYLVESTER — Flora E. Lockwood, of Sylvester, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Whitesville. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whites-ville, and one hour before service Friday at the church.

Viva Margaret Low

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Viva Margaret Low, 90, formerly of Neola, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Rosewood cemetery, Lewisburg. There will be no visitation.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the local Hospice care and Anthony Creek Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Coach Joe Earl Bennett

MEADOW BRIDGE — Coach Joe Earl Bennett, age 53, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a sudden illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1953, in Rainelle, he was the son of Mary Ann Williams Bennett of Alderson, and the late Lester Garland Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a coach and teacher at Meadow Bridge High School for the past 30 years. He was a 1972 graduate of Greenbrier East High School and a 1977 graduate of Concord College, where he was a four-year starter for the Mountain Lions football team. He received his master’s degree from Marshall University. Coach Bennett was the vice president of the Fayette County American Federation of Teachers and was inducted into the Greenbrier East High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Coach Bennett was very devoted to young people and was well respected by his students. He was a friend to all.

Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Bennett-Adkins and her husband, Ernie Adkins, II, of Meadow Bridge; two sons, Justin Bennett of Meadow Bridge and Tyler Bennett of Meadow Bridge; his mother, Mary Ann Williams Bennett of Alderson; two brothers, John W. Bennett and his wife, Linda, of Alderson and Mark Livesay and his wife, Brenda, of Alderson; three nieces, Ginny Bennett-Helmick and her husband, Bobby, of Charleston, April Livesay-Waid and her husband, Willard, of Williamsburg, and Marrah Porter of Springdale; two nephews, Cole Porter of Springdale, and Levi Livesay of Alderson; a great-nephew, Carson Waid of Williamsburg; and special friends, Melissa and Kevin Porter of Springdale.

Services will be Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Sewell Valley Baptist Church, Rainelle, with the Rev. Frank Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Alderson Community Center (former Alderson High School Gym), Alderson, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Bennett, Tyler Bennett, Rusty Harvey, Preston Palumbo, David Fleshman, Kevin Porter, Charlie Redden and Steve Hambrick. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Marco Lemley.

Calvin ‘Ray’ Bostic

RONCEVERTE — Calvin “Ray” Bostic, 78, died April 22, 2007.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret Ann ‘Peggy’ Burns

LEWISBURG — Margaret Ann “Peggy” Burns, 57, died April 20, 2007.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Ronceverte. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg, where a Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m.

Blanche Campbell

Blanche Campbell, 80, of Sunny Acres, Beckley, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 19, 2007.

She was born on April 17, 1927, in Raleigh County to Fred and Sadie Covey, who preceded her in death.

She was a loving mother to her two daughters, Carol and Linda; her grandchildren, Theresa, Tara, Stefanie and Chase; and her great-grandchildren, Hanna, Jonathan, Jacob, Marshall, Quentin and Chance. The love of her life, her husband, Reo, preceded her in death.

She was also survived by two stepchildren and several brothers and sisters.

Private funeral services were held for the family.

The family request that donations of sympathy be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southern WV Chapter, 400 Allen Drive, Suite 20, Charleston, WV 25302.

Bernice I. ‘Pekoe’ Compton

PRINCETON — Bernice I. “Pekoe” Compton, 82, of North Wickham Avenue, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Princeton Community Hospital.

Born in Raleigh County on Feb. 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late George Leonard and Topsy M. Sarver Kester. She was a retired Cook with the Mercer County School System. Mrs. Compton enjoyed the weekends when she could go out to find the best bargains at local yard sales. She attended the Salvation Army Center for Worship and the Kee Street United Methodist Church, both in Princeton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey T. Compton, and two sisters, Loretta Fay Kester and Edna L. Allenbaugh.

Survivors include two brothers, Bill Kester of Goshen, Va., and Sam Kester and his wife Virginia of Midway; two sisters, Alice Paugh and her husband Robert of Daniels, and Emma Laurissa Chornobay and her husband Eddie of Scarbro; former husband and friend, Tom J. Compton; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and numerous friends and neighbors.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2007, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Capt. Burl LaBatte officiating. Entombment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 300 Princeton Ave., Princeton, WV 24740.

The Compton Family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.

Alice W. Conard

MOUNT NEBO — Alice W. Conard, 75, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at her home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville, with Pastor Jim Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Family cemetery at Mount Nebo. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Margaret Katherine Dove passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Carlos R. Duff

On Friday, April 20, 2007, Carlos R. Duff of Hart Street, Beckley, formerly of Bradshaw and Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away at the Veterans Area Medical Center in Beckley following a two-year illness. He was 60 years of age.

Born Car-los Richard Duff, on April 12, 1947, in Welch, he was one of five children born to the late Alex and Myrtle Shepherd Duff.

Carlos spent his childhood at Bradshaw and was a graduate of Iaeger High School. In 1965, during the Vietnam Era, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany; he received the National Defense Service medal and a citation for sharpshooter.

After his stint in service, he began a career in the mining industry and retired as a federal mine inspector in July of 2005. A former resident of Ashville, Ohio, he lived in Prestonsburg, Ky., for 30 years, where he was a member of the Tom Moore Memorial Baptist Church. After retiring from the federal government, Carlos and his family moved to Smith Mountain Lake at Moneta, Va.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he opened the Blue Water Bay Guide Service. Carlos settled in Beckley in 2006.

He was preceded in death by brothers Steve and Phillip, a sister Serita and his father-in-law, Eugene Church.

He is the beloved husband of Nancy Church Duff, whom he married on July 21, 1970; the dear father of Westley Duff of Beckley; the fond brother of Billy Ray Duff and wife Betty of Hillsville, Va.; his loving extended family, the Churches, mother-in-law, Sylvia of Iaeger; sisters-in-law, Ginny Topping of Beckley, Debra Ballard of Roanoke, Va., and Connie Wimmer and husband Terry of Grundy, Va.; brothers-in-law, Gene Church and wife Debbie of Harrisburg, Pa., Michael Church and wife Rayetta of Richlands, Va., and Don Church and wife Mary Beth of Grundy, Va.; and a host of nephews and nieces.

Services will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday, April 24, in the Melton Mortuary Chapel at 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with the Rev. Hobart Kennedy, Rev. Ira Scott and Mr. Don Branham officiating. Committal services will follow at 2 p.m. in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Monday, at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Westley Duff, Alex Duff, Pete Herrera, Terry Wimmer, Mike Church, Don Church and Gene Church.

Charles Meador

Charles Meador, age 64, passed away Friday, April 20, 2007, at his home.

Dr. Forrest Matthew Mingo

HINTON — Dr. Forrest Matthew Mingo, 87, died April 21, 2007, in the Summers County ARH following a short illness.

Born July 4, 1919, in Richmond Va., he was the son of the late Charles “Patsy” and Daisy Elizabeth Belcher Mingo.

Dr. Mingo was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton and was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 until 1947 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.

Dr. Mingo had attended Bluefield College and was a graduate of Concord College and a 1944 graduate of Northwestern University School of Dentistry in Chicago. He was a native of Bluefield and moved to Hinton in 1947 where he practiced Dentistry until his retirement in 2003. He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman and was a wonderful friend and caring father.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Baldwin Mingo; two sisters, Winnie Shumate and Patty Martino; and two brothers, Dr. Wirt Mingo and Dr. Prince Mingo.

Survived by two daughters, Carolyn White Mingo of Statesville, N.C., and Pamela Mingo-Sain and husband Timothy of Talking Rock, Ga.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton with Rev. Dr. Barbara Romfo officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Donations of sympathy should be made to the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary.

The family of Dr. Mingo wishes to thank the Summers County ARH and Dr. Day and their staffs for the wonderful care that was given during their father’s illness.

Pallbearers will be Kitrick Durnan, Gene Davis, Bob Butler, David Quisenberry, David Staley and Dr. Michael McNeer.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.
