Mable Irene Coyner

Mrs. Mabel Irene Chapman Coyner, 94, of Scott Depot died December 12, 2004. She was born June 9, 1910, a daughter of the late William and Fannie Chapman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer G. Coyner, brothers, Otis, Harry and Charles, and sisters, Hazel, Clara and Myrtle. She was a member of Teays Valley Church of God and the last charter member of the former Farm Women's Club of Scott Depot, now known as the West Virginia Community Education Outreach Service Club. Surviving: son, Glenn Coyner of Hurricane; daughter, Joanne Smith of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Steven Coyner, Daniel Smith, David Smith and Melissa Smith; three great-grandchildren. Service was held Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Ken Toler officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25143, or to Teays Valley Church of God, 4430 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Larry C. Higginbotham

Larry C. Higginbotham, 52, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Buffalo, died Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Dayton VA Hospical following a long illness.

He was a Methodist, a self-employed construction worker and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Maxine Higginbotham.

Surviving: brothers, Bryan and Lee Higginbotham, both of Buffalo; sister, Betty Higginbotham of Columbus; nephews, Allen Higginbotham of Buffalo, Steven Higginbotham of Nitro, Tristan and Brett Higginbotham, both of Leon; great-nephew, Sean Higginbotham of Teays Valley; great-niece, Kara Higginbotham of Nitro.

Service was held Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Bufflao, with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Paul Victor Wilson

Paul Victor Wilson, 86, of Poca died Monday, December 13, 2004, at home after a long illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Poca. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the 509th Parachute Infantry Company. He served his country and received several medals including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. He was retired from Carpenters Local 128.

Surviving: wife, Rebecca M. Wilson of Poca; sisters, Margaret Owsley Grady of Jacksonville, Florida; sons and daughters, Paul E. and his wife, Evelyn, of Eleanor, Stephen and his wife, Aki, of Sunland, California, Robert of Surry, Virginia, Terry and his wife, Kim, of Clendenin, Timothy of Poca, Barbara Withrow and her husband, Rick, of Poca, Patricia Wilson-Peplo and her husband, Ted, of Gilbert, Arizona; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Service was held Thursday, December 16, 2004, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Rev. Keith Monday and Rev. James Monday officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House, with military honors by the Alum Creek VFW.

Jennifer L. Crosier

Jennifer Lynn Crosier, 24, of Scott Depot died December 13, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 21, 1980 in Charleston, Jennifer was a 1998 graduate of Winfield High School and had been pursuing a nursing degree in Anchorage, Alaska, prior to her illness. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was an avid fan of the WVU Mountaineers.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Phyllis Feldhaus.

Surviving: father, Steve Crosier of Scott Depot; mother, Vicky Crosier of Anchorage; sister, Maria Crosier of Nitro; brother, Brandon Crosier of Scott Depot; grandparents, Delt and Reba Crosier of Charleston; several aunts, uncles and cousins; her faithful Jack Russell Terrier, Sable.

A memorial service was held Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Hurricane Church of Christ with Minister Jeff Garrett officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Hurricane Church of Christ, PO Box 177, Hurricane WV 25526.

Jimmy Gale Jordan

Jimmy Gale Jordan, 59, of Milton went to be with the Lord Monday, Dec. 13, 2004. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor George Surgeon. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born Feb. 13, 1945, in Cabell County, a son of the late Evelyn Jordan Frye. He was an employee of Bird-Baker Hughes-Andriez Machine Company. He is survived by his wife, Mary Hampton Jordan; one daughter, Michelle Lucas and her husband Garry of Crown City, Ohio; one son, Jimmy Jordan Jr. and his wife Melissa of Lesage, W.Va.; two stepsons, David D. Humphrey of Troy, Ohio, and Timothy W. Humphrey of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Sue White of Ona and Mary Clay of Huntington; one brother, Johnny Dale Frye of Salt Rock; four grandchildren Miranda and Jordan Christian, Michael Lucas and Austin Jordan; nine step-grandchildren, Brandy, Jonathan Timothy, Amanda and Christina Humphrey and Stacey, Sean, Emily and Amber Lucas; and special friends; Paul Holley, Tracy Toppings, Shelly Hatfield, Kelly Vannatter and Tammy Jividen. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Judith Ann “Judy” Hayes

Judith Ann “Judy” Hayes, 61, of Huntington died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. She is survived by one daughter, Cindy Hartley of Milton; one son, Joe Hayes Jr. of Illinois; four brothers, Lawrence, Byrel, Jess and Roger Freeman; one granddaughter, Brittany Chapman.

Richard Dale Midkiff

Richard Dale Midkiff, 62, of Milton, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Stan Maynard. Interment in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born February 5, 1942, in Huntington, a beloved son of Paul E. Midkiff of Ona and the late Pearl E. Osborne Midkiff. He graduated from Milton High School and the University of Charleston. Richard was a man of faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include the mother of his children, Brenda Jenkins Midkiff; one son, Brian Midkiff and his wife, Cathy; one daughter, Jennifer Vickers and her husband, George; three lovely grandchildren, Katie and Brendan Midkiff and Zoe Vickers. He is also survived by four sisters, Marsha Midkiff of Charleston, Milena Moon and her husband, Tom of Milton, Firelei Parks and her husband, Dan, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Linda Weaver and her husband, Raymond, of Ona: one brother, Max Midkiff and his wife, Tammy, of Scott Depot. Also surviving are six special nieces and eight special nephews, and 16 great-nieces and grand-nephews. In addition, he had many special friends at American Legion Post #139, Milton. Pallbearers were Brian Midkiff, George Vickers, and members of the American Legion Post #139 who conducted military graveside rites. Honorary pallbearers were Marty Midkiff, Patrick Moon, Josh and Nate Parks, and Greg Weaver.

Harold Miller

Harold “Bud” Miller, 85, of Scott Depot died December 5, 2004, at his home in Hudson, Florida.

He was retired from the Boiler Makers Union Local No. 667 in Winfield, a member of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Hudson. He was also a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge.

Surviving: wife, Beatrice B. McLane Miller; cousins, Jack Miller of Teays Valley and Bill Miller of Dunbar; other relatives and host of friends.

Service was held Friday, December 10, 2004, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Dr. Gregory Hayes and George Webb officiating. Entombment was at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Dempsey D. Boggess

Dempsey David Boggess, 68, of Scott Depot died December 10, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born September 5, 1936 in Scott Depot, he was a son of the late David Rector and Betty Rebecca Lamb Boggess. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Judith Collbaugh.

He retired from Union Carbide, Institute plant, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. He served in the U.S. Air Force during non-wartime sevice.

Surviving: sons, Jody and Jimmy Boggess; sister, Doris Campbell of Charleston; brothers, Charles W. Boggess and Ted Boggess, both of Scott Depot.

Service was held Monday, December 13, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield.

Sandra Kay Worley

Sandra Kay Worley, 66, of Hurricane died December 9, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born December 19, 1937 in Hurricane, she was the daughter of the late Russell Dewey and Lula mar Hawthorne Turner. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Bessie Whitten and Eloise Bledsoe.

Surviving: husband, Carl R. Worley; sisters, Mary Lou Salmons of Barboursville, Karen Hughes of Culloden and Sharon Morris of Hurricane; brothers, James M. Turner of Huntington, Darrell E. Turner of Dayton, Ohio, Dale Turner of Parkersburg, and Robert H. Turner of Lebanon, Tennessee.

Service was held Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Greg Hudson officiating. Burial was in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.

Vernon “Rusty” Adkins

Vernon “Rusty” Adkins, 83, of Huntington, formerly of Beavercreek, Ohio, passed away December 4, 2004. He was born July 10, 1921, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a son of the late Ottie Sharp and Rosa Myrtle Bowen Adkins. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Iris Lea Wood Adkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Wichman Hager and Harry L. Hager of Barboursville and Jeanne Strottner and Lt. Col. (Ret) Phillip Strottner of San Antonio, Texas ; grandchildren, Brandon Wichman and his wife Alice and their children Savannah Wichman and Grace Wichman, Shannon Wichman and his wife, Anne, and Patrick Strottner and his fiancee, Michelle Rosfeld; and one brother, Ottie Adkins Jr. of Huntington. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Freda Mae Jenkins

Freda Mae Jenkins, 58, of Huntington, went to rest with the Lord Sunday, December 5, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Hobb Crabtree. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. She was born July 20, 1946, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James and Rethel Lester Watts. She was retired from Corbins. She is survived by three brothers, Billy Joe Damron and his wife, Tracy, of Milton, Dennis Watts of Kenova, and Rickie L. Watts of Indiana; six sisters and their spouses, Letia Gay Plybon of Lavalette, Sue and David Mullins of Kenova, Nora Linda and Edgar Plybon of Wayne, Brenda and Gary Adkins of Cleveland, Cheryl Naundra and Jerry Waugh of Culloden, and Sonja and Richard McKenzie of Ravenswood, her fiance, Robert L. Sisson of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews.

Lovie Ora Persinger

Lovie Ora Persinger, 75, of Milton, widow of Carl Lester Persinger, died Monday, December 6, 2004 in Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Culloden Cemetery.

William B. “Bill” Mount

William B. “Bill” Mount, 89, of passed away Monday, December 6, 2004, in Mariner Healthcare of Huntington. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, December 9, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Donnie Spurlock officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. He was born March 10, 1915, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late James P. and Ida May Paxton Mount. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Clary Mount; daughter, Janice Smith; four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Jo-Ann Merritt of Salt Rock; four grandchildren, Monica Brian, Dorothy and Charlie; four great-grandchildren Devon, Destiny, Sarah and Little Charlie; two brothers, James L. Mount and Raymond R. Mount, both of Glenwood; and two sisters, Oweva Mae Clary of Glenwood and Genevive Spurlock of Scottown, Ohio.

Freda Juanita Davis Smith

Freda Juanita Davis Smith, 84, of Huntington died December 4, 2004, at her home. A lifelong resident of Huntington, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Carl Sumner Davis and Lena Berry Davis, and the widow of Everett R. Smith. She was also preceded in death by a half brother, Raymond Davis. She was born March 2, 1920, in Huntington. Mrs. Smith was a of Central United Methodist Church and an active member of the Barboursville Senior Citizens. She retired from Owens-Illinois of Huntington where she worked for 30 years. She was active in the Democratic Party and a member of the Rebekahs. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Smith Johnson of Huntington and Judy Smith Curtis and Harry Curtis of Easley, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson of Slattington, Pa., and DaJuan “DJ” Curtis and Taylor Blair Curtis, both of Easley, S.C. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Kevin Lance. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery.
