Layton S. ‘Petey’ Calloway

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Layton S. “Petey” Calloway, 70, of Columbus, formerly of Mount Hope, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

Born Oct. 10, 1936, he was a son of the late L.S. Calloway Sr. and Mary Evelyn Calloway.

Mr. Calloway was retired after many years of employment with the State of Ohio. He was a member of Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Usher Board. He graduated in 1956 from DuBois High School in Mount Hope. He was selected first-team All-State in football.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Calloway; a son, L.S. “Little Petey”; a stepson, Monty Scott; a stepdaughter, Diane Scott; several grandchildren; brothers, John and wife, Hazel, of Columbus, Bill and wife, Jean, of Suitland, Md., Norman of Charleston, S.C., Duane of Mount Hope, Leroy and wife, Portia, of Forrestville, Md., and Charles Michael and wife, Veronica, of Lawton, Okla.; sisters, Nancy McNeill of Los Angeles, Calif., Judy Gambill of Galax, Va., and Marry and husband, Warren Armstead, of South Point, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, Columbus. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery, Columbus.

Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

Arrangements by J. Martin Smith Mortuary, Columbus.

Alda Mae Cox

Alda Mae Cox, 49, of 108 Ninth St., Beckley, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.

Born April 17, 1957, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Gladys Cox.

She was a social worker at Raleigh County Community Action Head Start. She was a member of Heart of God Ministries. She was also a member of the Mass Choir and Super Sunday Choir. She worked with Food For Body and Soul Church Pantry.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clienton Cox.

Survivors include her companion of 33 years, Donald Green; her sons, Donald Lee Cox of Beckley and Dami-en Demerick Cox of Fayetteville, N.C.; her mother, Virgie Jackson of Beckley; brothers and sisters, Kenneth Lee Cox of Dayton, Ohio, Joseph E. Cox Jr. of Beckley, Belinda Ann Cox of Beckley and Mary Ann Cox of Beckley; uncles, James Cox and wife, Millie, of Beckley, Joseph Cox Sr. of Beckley and Howard Cox and wife, Jessica, of Columbus, Ohio; aunts, Mary Wiltz of Flint, Mich., and Barbara A. Cox-Mizell of Beckley; special friends, Denisha Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Michelle N. Burnett of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

William E. McVey

ANSTED — William E. McVey, 77, formerly of Mount Hope, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007.

In keeping with Mr. McVey’s wishes, he has been cremated. There will not be a visitation.

Danny Miller

SAULSVILLE — Danny Miller, 55, of Saulsville, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, is serving the Miller family.

Dottie Payne Miller

RAINELLE — Dottie Payne Miller, 84, of Rainelle, formerly of Meadow Bridge, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in a local health care center following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1922, at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Latham O. and Mary Leola Taylor Payne.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a farmer. She was of the Baptist faith.

Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Miller; two infant daughters, Sarah Lee and Dottie Lee; a sister, Mabel Payne Gillespie; and two brothers, H. Orland and Dewey Payne.

Survivors include her daughter, Rosemary Gautier and her husband, Burton Jr., of Rainelle; a granddaughter, Cynthia Swim and her husband, Allen, of Phoenix, Md.; a great-granddaughter, Katherine Rose Swim of Phoenix, Md.; and brothers, Eldridge C. Payne of Alvarado, Texas, and Raymond A. Payne and his wife, Catherine, of Hurricane.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Pat Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in Canaday cemetery, Glen View.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 6th Floor, New York, NY 10001, or to the American Heart Association, 162 Court St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Annette Jane Painter

Annette Jane Painter, 41, of Glen Morgan, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in an Oak Hill hospital following a long illness.

Born July 11, 1965, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Samuel Lee and Eva Jane Loving Painter of Glen Morgan.

She was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Hubert and Lucy Tolbert Loving; and her paternal grandparents, Clinton and Beulah Painter.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her daughter, LaDonna Marie Smithson at home; LaDonna’s father, David Smithson of Ghent; a brother, Keith Painter of Glen Morgan; a niece and two nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Mr. Kenneth Overdorf and the Rev. Roger Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Ora Mae Pitsenbarger

SUMMERSVILLE — Ora Mae Pitsenbarger, 77, of Summersville, formerly of Rupert, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle. Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service.

Silas Larry Smith

JASPER, Ala. — Silas Larry Smith, 60, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Elbert and Mary Smith of Beckley.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Dent; daughters, Linda Smith Reimers of Chicago, Ill., and Kathy Busby of Corner, Ala.; sons, Chris Smith of Chicago and Dewayne Dobbins of Jasper; son-in-law, Elbert Busby of Jasper; sisters, Patricia Paige of Mechanicsville, Va., Bertha Griffin of Plymouth, Fla., Norma Gill of Beckley and Margaret Jaworski of Cross, S.C.; brothers, Elbert Smith of Mullberry, Fla., Fred C. Smith of Pensacola, Fla., Randy Smith of Great Bridge, Va., and Chris Smith of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Franklin officiating.

Roy Dale Teubert

ANSTED — Roy Dale Teubert, 63, of Ansted, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Lovers Leap Baptist Church. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Rose Mary Tharpe

CRAIGSVILLE — Rose Mary Tharpe, 47, of Craigsville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Summersville Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Richwood. She was a loving daughter, sister and aunt. She adored her nieces and nephews. She was a 1977 graduate of Richwood High School and always looked forward to her class reunions. She liked to play bingo and watch television. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Survivors include her mother, Camilla Zangari Tharpe of Craigsville; her father, Oscar Tharpe and Connie Propst of Summersville; two brothers, Mike and wife, Dorothy Tharpe, of Craigsville and Oscar Jr. and wife, Patricia Tharpe, of Cottle; a sister, Linda Kay and husband, Steve Willis, of Craigsville; a stepbrother, Steven and wife, Melanie Propst, of Fort Riley, Kan.; best friend, Carolyn Cox Hanna of Craigsville; eight nieces, Theresa and Anna Willis, Amber Nicole Tharpe, Gabrielle and Phalam Fleming, and Kaitlynn, Breanna and Gabrielle Propst; and six nephews, Brian Michael and Brandon Lee Tharpe, Chance and Lance Fleming, and Nathaniel and Nicholas Tharpe.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Interment will be in Holy Family Catholic cemetery, Richwood, with Father Jerome Rawa officiating. Rosary will be at 7:45 p.m. today.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas H. Waugh

FAYETTEVILLE — Thomas H. Waugh, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at home following an extended illness.

He was born June 25, 1921, at Denton, Ky.

Mr. Waugh served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, attended Gatewood Baptist Church, was a member of the UMWA and Lafayette No. 57 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, Fayetteville. He retired from Westmoreland Coal Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola J. Withrow Waugh.

Left to cherish his memories include his son, Charles Thomas “Chuck” Waugh and his wife, Robin, of Charleston; two grandchildren, Charles Thomas Waugh II and Lauren E. Waugh, both of Charleston; a brother, Harry Waugh of Scarbro; and four sisters, Grace Pittman of Oak Hill, Velma Newton of Scarbro, Euvone Leffel of Richwood and Ester Jane McGuffin of Oak Hill.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.

Edith M. Webb

Edith M. Webb, 79, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Regency Room, Swain and Mifflin streets, Bristol, Pa. Calling time will be 10:30 a.m. until time of service.

Arrangements by Carter Funeral Home, Bristol.

Wilma Biggs Sotak

On Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, Wilma Biggs Sotak passed away at her home on Westwood Drive with her family and friends by her side. She was in her 94th year.

Born Wilma Edith Biggs at Paint Creek near Harper on Nov. 21, 1912, she was the fifth daughter of 11 children born to the late Lonzo Carlos and Minnie Godby Biggs.

Known affectionately as “Wig” all her life, Wilma graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1932. She went to work in the company store at Eccles, where she was to meet her husband-to-be, Steve Sotak. They were married in 1939, and lived together in Fayette and Raleigh counties for 50 years until Steve’s death in 1989. A homemaker, her home was open to all. Known for her cooking, she insisted no one ever leave her home hungry.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Mamie McCutcheon, Thelma Beckelhimer, Faye Daniels, Opal Stanley, Gladys Wilson and Freda Hugall; and three brothers, Paul, Carlos “Buster” and Cecil Biggs.

Survivors include her closest sister, Mildred “Midge” Mahaffey of Beckley. She was the beloved mother of Dave Sotak and his wife, Nancy, of Beckley and Phillip Sotak and his wife, Anne, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; the dear grandmother of Ashley Williams and her husband, David, of Beckley, Adam Sotak and his wife, Tara Purohit, of Carrboro, N.C., Jeremy Sotak and his wife, Sarah, of Beckley and Caleb Sotak of Huntington; great-grandchildren, Brandon Pierce, Cole and Emily Williams and Alisa Boyce-James; and her longtime friend, Georgia Slygh. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Special thanks go to the seven faithful and wonderful caregivers who stayed with our mother these past six months and to Hospice of Southern West Virginia and their caring staff.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 1:30 p.m. until time of services Sunday.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Following the service, there will be a repast gathering at the home of Mildred Mahaffey at 106 Lilly St., Beckley.
