Samuel Neil Ward, 97, of Oak Hill, passed away peacefully, April 23, 2006, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side after a short illness.
He is the son of the late William Ward and Margaret Neil Ward.
Samuel loved cars and also loved to travel. He gave up driving at the age of 96. He was a 1921 graduate of Mount Hope High School.
Samuel was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Irene Warren Ward; second wife, Myrl Cooper Ward; a brother, George Ward and sisters, Jesse Harrah and Catherine Alley.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter from his first marriage, Irene Jane Ward Urey and husband, Donald A. Urey of Hermitage, Pa.; three grandchildren, Dorene Cuba and husband, Tom of Mohnton, Pa., Linda Darlington and husband, Paul, of Alexandria, Va., and Donald A. Urey Jr. of Hermitage, Pa.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and his extended family living in Scotland, England and Ireland.
Private graveside services will be noon Wednesday, April 26, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

SYLVESTER — Alfred Powell Chapman Sr., 70, of Sylvester, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Bloomingrose.
He was born Jan. 18, 1935, at Bickmore, a son of the late Bee and Lillian Carton Chapman Sr.
He was a retired employee of Ford Motor Co. with 49 years of service at the Cleveland plant where he was a member of United Auto Workers Local No. 1250. He was a member of the VFW and Moose Lodge at Nitro.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Buffington Chapman; sons and daughters, Rick Chapman and wife, Linda, Vicki Griffy and husband, Darrell, and Teresa Davidson and the late Wylie, all of Bloomingrose, Al Jr. and wife, Racheal, of Sylvester and Chris at home; four grandsons, Matt Griffy, Patrick Chapman, Derrick Davidson and Levi Chapman; two granddaughters, Amanda Chapman and Brandy Gillispie; a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Griffy; two sisters, Millie Waycaster of Columbus, Ohio, and Leah “Bo” Snyder of North Ridgeville, Ohio; four brothers, Delbert Chapman of Dundee, Fla., and Bee Jr., Robert “Bob” and Johnny, all of North Ridgeville; and a host of family and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Roger Taylor and Carlos Woodrum officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

John Frederick Clark
FAYETTEVILLE — John Frederick Clark, 90, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following an extended illness.
Born Oct. 15, 1915, in Charleston, he was the son of the late John Edgar Clark and Olive Neale Clark.
Mr. Clark was a retired department supervisor at Union Carbide at the Alloy plant with 40 years of service. He graduated from Gauley Bridge High School and was a member of the Fayette County Historical Society. He enjoyed working on electronics, genealogy and studying about the history of the Civil War.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norine Elizabeth Dotson Clark, on June 19, 1996; three sons, James Frederick Clark, John Terry Clark and Neale Randolph Clark; a grandson, Richard Allen Clark; a brother, Mack Clark; and a sister, Mary Rutledge.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol Ann Drummond of Wilmington, N.C.; two sons and their wives, Mike and Janet Clark of Oak Hill and Pat and Jeanne of Beckley; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Jane Jones of Akron, Ohio.
A brief memorial service will be 5 p.m. Saturday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Thomas McClung officiating. Entombment of cremains will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, at a later date.

Marie A. Foster, 78, of Dorothy, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, following a long illness.
Marie was born May 26, 1927, at Eccles, the daughter of the late Kelly Snuffer and the late Elsie Johanna Stover.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Estep of Charleston and Mary Abshire of Elkview; a son, Bob Foster and wife, LaDonna, of Dorothy; a sister, Kathleen Black of Glen Daniel; a brother, Buster Stover of Kingsport, Tenn.; a cousin, Jimmy Whitt of State Line, Pa.; five grandsons; two granddaughters; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and four brothers.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. Gary Maynor and the Rev. Jerry Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Oretha Thomas Lanham
FAYETTEVILLE — Oretha Mae Thomas Lanham, 81, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at the home of her niece, Ellen Hedges of Miamisburg, Ohio.
Born Feb. 8, 1924, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late Everette Thomas and Donzella Stull Thomas.
Mrs. Lanham was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon H. “Jack” Lanham, and a sister, Edith Jones.
She is survived by her sister, Clara Stevens of Miamisburg, and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be noon Saturday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Michael Angelona officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Bruce A. Araujo
Bruce A. Araujo, 29, of Beckley, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, in a local hospital following a short illness.
He was a special son to Delores Parker and a loving brother of David Parker. Bruce was born Dec. 6, 1977, in Charleston, the son of Paul Araujo of St. Albans and the late Annise Weddington Araujo. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He was active in Challenger T-Ball and Challenger bowling and was active in the Blue Jay Day Program at Beaver. He had been a resident of Beckley for the past 11 years. He was preceded in death by a special aunt, Emma A. Gentry.
Other survivors include three brothers, Paul F. Araujo of Kentucky, Tom Araujo of Elkins and Brian Araujo of North Carolina; numerous cousins and friends.
A funeral liturgy will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church with the Rev. Perry Malacaman officiating. A Rite of Committal will follow at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.

Richard Butcher Sr.
BRENTON — Richard Butcher Sr., 85, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in Beckley VAMC following a long illness.
Born May 13, 1921, in Williamsport, Ky., he was the son of the late Jim and Batha Ward Butcher.
Mr. Butcher was a member of Brenton Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. Mr. Butcher was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Tyler Butcher; three brothers, Virgil, Mark and Edgar Butcher; and a sister, Jemima Butcher.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Faye Cook Butcher of the home; two sons, Richard “Butch” Butcher Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Brenton, and Larry Butcher and his wife, Patsy, of Brenton; a daughter from a previous marriage, Glenda Smith of Circleville, Ohio; three brothers, Junior Butcher, Eddie Butcher and John Lee Butcher, all of Paintsville, Ky.; two sisters, Margie Davis and Ruby Butcher, both of Paintsville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Gregory Scott Butcher, Brian Keith Butcher, Richard Darrin Butcher and Robert Butcher; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary Brian Butcher, Amanda Butcher, Andrew Butcher, Richard Austin Butcher, Emily Butcher and Haley Butcher.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Brenton Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cook Family cemetery, Brenton.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
