Daniel Joseph Adkins

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Daniel Joseph Adkins, 53, formerly of Pineville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., following a long battle with cancer.

Born March 25, 1953, in Logan County, he was the son of the late William “Bill” and Alice Gore Adkins.

Dan worked for Eastern Coal Corporation and was a member of the UMWA for 15 years. He was recently employed as an electrician in the construction business.

Dan was an avid “Shag” dancer. He enjoyed visiting family and friends. His gift for singing will be missed by all and his zest for life will be remembered by all that knew him. Dan was a member of Pineville Southern Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Thomas Adkins.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Joshua Adkins and Jeremiah Adkins, both of Greensboro, N.C. And also his sister, Debbie Wiles and her husband, Tom, and two nephews, Adrian Wiles and Eric Wiles, all of Pineville.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2006, at Pineville Southern Baptist Church with Sonny Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Dan’s name to Pineville Southern Baptist Church, P.O. Box 584, Pineville, WV 24874.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Adkins family.

Celeste Lorraine Brugh Arritt

MEADOW BRIDGE — Celeste Lorraine Brugh Arritt died Monday, July 10, 2006, at her home following a short illness.

Born in Lansing, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Brugh and Mona Bobbitt Brugh Jones.

Mrs. Arritt was a member of the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer from 1959 until her death. She was a retired teacher of 43 1/2 years from Meadow Bridge High School, where she taught Social Studies, Science, Math, Latin and Journalism. She served as sponsor of the Monte Meade yearbook and the Montrado school newspaper for many years.

She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi National Honorary Educational Society; Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary women educators’ organization; American Association of University Women, Hinton branch; National Retired Teachers Association; National Association of Retired Persons; National Education and West Virginia Education Association; Fayette County Retired Persons; Marshall University Alumni Association; a member of the Meadow Bridge Continuing Education Outreach Service; and Fayette County Historical Society.

Mrs. Arritt served as Meadow Bridge town treasurer, recorder and council member. She served as Fayette County Democratic Committeewoman and a member of the State Human Rights Commission. She was a history instructor for West Virginia University for four years and a history instructor for West Virginia Institute of Technology for one year. She was head of the Social Studies Department for the Federal Upward Bound Program for four years and was in the follow-up program for 10 years.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Leslie Arritt, in 1957; a son, Ronald Franklin Arritt, in 1956; and a brother, Ronald Claude Brugh, in 1989.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jon Michael and Rita Gail Arritt of Huntington; her daughter, Carolyn Celeste Arritt of Meadow Bridge; her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Nancy Jones of Portage, Mich.; her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Don Holko of Leesburg, Fla.; her granddaughter and husband, Teresa and Craig Chafin of Suwanee, Ga.; her granddaughter and husband, Donna and Thomas Toler of Wayne; her grandson and wife, Jon Michael Arritt II and Leisa of Port Charlotte, Fla.; her granddaughter, Mona Elizabeth Arritt of Lexington, Ky.; her great-grandchildren, Brooke and Tyler Chafin, Brittany, Sarah, and Tommy Toler, and John Michael Arritt III, Trevor and Gabriel Arritt; her nephew and wife, Doug and Helene Jones of Christiansburg, Va.; her nephew and wife, Michael and Tammy Jones of Cary, N.C.; her niece and husband, Rebecca and Dale Fonner of Kalamazoo, Mich.; her niece and husband, Jody and Rick Ouding of Plainwell, Mich.; her nephew and wife, Fletcher and Betty Jean Arritt of Fork Union, Va.; her nephew and wife, David and Maria Arritt of Fayetteville, and her nephew and wife, John and Cathy Arritt of Fayetteville.

Services will be 12 noon Friday, July 14, 2006, at the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Booth, the Rev. Melissa Shortridge, the Rev. Bill Lepp, and the Rev. Billy Cornell officiating. Burial will follow in the Huse Memorial Park cemetery, Fayetteville. The service will conclude with the release of the White Flights.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

Pallbearers will be Ron Patterson, Roger Patterson, David Farley, Gary Pomeroy, Larry McClintic and Gary Reed.

Honorary pallbearers will be W.D. Thomas, Wallace Jones, Ernie McGraw, Arnold Anderson, John Thomas, Leon Spencer, Randy Manning and Tim Goode.

Larry Baldwin II

HUNTINGTON — Larry Baldwin II, “Little Larry,” formerly of Kopperston, departed this life Monday, July 10, 2006, at the age of 32 years, 11 months and 14 days.

Born July 26, 1973, he was the son of Larry and Peggy Hatfield Baldwin.

“Little Larry” was a 1991 graduate of Oceana High School, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his son, Bradley Patrick.

Larry was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Clyde Baldwin.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beth Ann Moore Baldwin of Huntington; a son, Bradley Patrick at home; his parents, Larry and Peggy Baldwin of Huntington; a sister, Leslie Baldwin Basconi and her husband, T.J., of Prosperity; a niece, Sydney Abigayle Basconi; his paternal grandmother, Lucy Baldwin of Kopperston; maternal grandparents, Willard and Geneva Hatfield of Matheny; and a host of friends.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn cemetery, Princeton. Those wishing to attend should meet the family at the cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

Edna E. ‘Granny’ Blankenship

CENTERVILLE — Edna E. “Gran-ny” Blankenship, 81, of the Welch-Pineville Road, Centerville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, in Welch Community Hospital following a long illness.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Roger L. Browning Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alvin G. Chambers

Alvin G. Chambers, 72, of Beckley, died in a local hospital Wednesday, July 12, 2006, following a short illness.

KETTERING, Md. — Carl English, 55, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006.

Theda M. Oyler Hess

WARM SPRINGS, Ga. — Theda M. Oyler Hess, 85, formerly of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute in Warm Springs.

Born April 12, 1920, at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late John Lawrence and Hallie Mae Stover Oyler.

Theda was the retired co-owner for C&O Cleaners in Oak Hill, and was a member of the United Methodist Church, Manchester, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Hess, on May 5, 2005, and a brother, John L. Oyler.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana “Susie” Faulkner and husband, Jim, of Warm Springs; a son, Michael T. Marshall and wife, Jeaneene, of Shawnee, Kan.; and a granddaughter, Sara Faulkner of Warm Springs.

Graveside rites and committal service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006, at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with the Rev. David White officiating.

It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 345 Kelly Ave., Oak Hill, WV 25901.

Burl C. O’Quinn

SUMMERSVILLE — Burl C. O’Quinn, 85, of Nile Road, died Monday, July 10, 2006.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Little Union Baptist Church at Calvin. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the White Funeral Home, Craigsville.

Norma Elizabeth Hatfield Smith

OAK HILL — Norma Elizabeth Hatfield Smith, 68, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.

Born March 3, 1938, at Sun, WV, a daughter of the late Luther and Bertha May Holstine Hatfield.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a former clerk for Family Dollar in Oak Hill.

Norma was a member of the Red Star Baptist Church and Winolia Chapter No. 59 OES formerly of the Oak Hill Chapter No. 107.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Samuel Smith Sr.; a daughter, Gequetta Duncan; and four sisters, Sarah Hatfield, Kitty Woodson, Jean Skaggs and Lora Sizemore.

Survivors include five daughters, Darlene Pruden of Norfolk, Va., Betty Smith of Oak Hill, Kathy Mason of Oak Hill, Ronetta Davis of South Carolina, and Libby Aaron of Oak Hill; four sons, Ronald Smith Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Darrell Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Gene Smith of Oak Hill and Bill Smith of Oak Hill; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Randy Sunderland and the Rev. Ronnie Persinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, where an OES service will be held at 7 p.m.

Ricky Allen Barnette

MT. NEBO — Ricky Allen Barnette, 44, son of Delano Barnette of Summersville and Charlotte Adkins Barnette of Mt. Nebo, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006. He has a sister, Debra Mullens of Calvin.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today at Williams cemetery on Cranberry Ridge at Camden-on-Gauley.

OAK HILL — Theodore Tinsley Bateman, 77, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.

Ronald Lee Bennett, 72, of Shady Spring, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Jerry L. Bolen

Jerry L. Bolen of Sullivan, on July 13, 2006, 11 a.m., with family by his side, Jesus dispatched a golden chariot with an heavenly angel escort to the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley to redeem a special saint and take him up into heaven. He now resides with Jesus and is singing and walking the streets of gold along with mom and dad and many family members and friends that have gone on to their reward.

Jerry was born May 20, 1947, at Jonben, WV, to the late Lawrence and Myrtle Bolen. He was a dedicated member of Cales Chapel in Coal City, WV. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time with his grandkids. He also loved attending church. Jerry was known for his kindness to everyone. He worked in construction and was a driver for FMRS. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Eugene Lilly and Russell D. Bolen, and brother-in-law, David Mills.

He is survived by his precious wife of 16 years, Rebecca; two sons, Jerry “Butch” Bolen of Eperly Hill and companion, Tammy, and Jason Bolen and wife, Christine, of Coal City, and three daughters, Michelle Taylor and husband, Gary, of Sophia, Tina Bolen and husband, David, of Beckley, and Andrea Morrill and husband, Curtis, of Mabscott; two sisters, Peggy Mills of Hinton, Helen James and husband, Monroe, of Sullivan; two brothers, Donald Bolen and wife, Francis, of Beckley, and Ronald Bolen and wife, Darlene, of Niceville, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Rose Marie Bolen of Glen White and Phyllis Lilly of Soak Creek; a special cousin, Roger Akers of Orville, Ohio; a special friend, “Aunt Bonnie.” He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher, Jeremy, Ciera, Cheyenne, Jerry Porter, Alexis, Zachary, Makaila, Candi, Brandon, Kelly, Michael, Sarah, Austin, Cody, Curtis and soon to be Hunter; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Devon; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Jerry’s family will be receiving friends at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Monday. Burial will follow in the Thompson cemetery at Coal City. The Rev. Dennis Haga will officiate. Jerry’s life will be celebrated at Coal City Community Church following the funeral.

Pallbearers will be David Bolen, J.D. Mills, Tommy Lilly, Russell Bolen Jr., Ronald Bolen Jr. and Jeff Testament. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Bolen, Michael Bolen, Mark Mills, Richard Mills, Jeff Lilly, Randy Lilly, and Craig Lilly.

Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are called according to his purpose.”

Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley is serving the Bolen family.
