Hazel Christian Bucklin

Hazel “Mamaw” Christian Bucklin, 85, of Daniels, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at her home surrounded by family.

Born June 19, 1920, at Jewell Ridge, Va., Hazel was the daughter of the late Crockett and Artie Hylton Christian.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Bucklin; a sister, Juanita Walker; and brother, James Christian.

A member of the Baptist faith, Hazel enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, gardening and especially spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her four sons, Burnice G. Bucklin and wife, Irene, of Jarrettsville, Md., Robert W. Bucklin and wife, Robin, of Huntsville, Ala., C. Randall Bucklin and wife, Barbara, of Springfield, Va., and Thomas L. Bucklin and wife, Ann, of Springfield; daughters, Phyllis Davis and husband, Edward, of Beckley and Carolyn Mullins and husband, Bob, of Daniels; 12 grandchildren, Alan and Michael Davis, Melissa Pettrey, Diana Rogers, Michael Bucklin, Carol Atchley, Randy and Chris Bucklin, Jason and Jacob Bucklin, Gail Claiborne and Jason Alley; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Larry Halsey and Hoss Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends, Donald Walker, Ernest Calfee Jr., Robert Wood, Roger Pierce, Ernie Smith and Eric Rogers.

Friends may gather with the family 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the American Heart Association or Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is serving the family.

Roger Lee Cade

CHARMCO — Roger Lee Cade, 63, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Jaleil Daniel Elliott

Jaleil Daniel Elliott, 8 months old, of 107 Dock St., Beckley, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Minnie Ethel Ferrell

KEITH — Minnie Ethel Ferrell, 97, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005.

Constance I. Galloway

HINTON — Constance I. Galloway, 73, of 114 Pleasant St., died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 7, 2005, at Springfield Care Center at Lindside following a long illness.

Magee H. Garten

HUNTINGTON — Magee H. Garten, 86, formerly of Lewisburg and Hinton, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 7, 2005, at Regency Assisted Living in Huntington.

Born Sept. 12, 1919, at Backus, he was the son of the late Carlos B. and Inez Maude Flack Garten.

He was a former businessman and resident of Hinton and was a school teacher for 21 years at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He retired and moved to Lewisburg, residing there until two years ago. Magee was a Master Mason with a 50-year membership in Hinton Lodge No. 62. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith P. Garten; his second wife, Lois H. Garten; a daughter, Kathryn Bolton; a great-grandson, Ben Bowen; and a brother, Johnny P. Garten.

He is survived by two daughters, Judith Sentz of Summersville and Susan Wyant of Huntington; a son, Magee H. Garten Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Mackinnon of Lake Worth, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two nephews and a niece.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Tim Halloran officiating. Entombment will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Visitation will be one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a charity of choice.

SWISS — William Edward Acord, 78, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call one hour before service Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Jayne C. Beene

FAYETTEVILLE — Harriett Jayne Coleman Beene, 70, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 5, 1935, at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Coleman and Harriett Thompson Coleman.

Mrs. Beene graduated from Mount Hope High School and West Virginia University. She taught 25 years at Fayetteville High School before retiring. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Walter C. “Coach” Beene; three sisters, Winkie Sandy of Catlettsburg, Ky., Betty Peck and her husband, Joe, of Gary, N.C., and Peggy Brill of Marlinton; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, 505 8th Ave., Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. W.J. (Martha) Blair

Mrs. W. J. (Martha) Blair passed away in her home in Cleveland, Tenn., on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at age 91.

She was born in Logan County on March 11, 1914.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Una Gothard; husband, the Rev. Wallace J Blair; sister, Lucille Everett; brother, Nathan Gothard; son, Tate Blair; and a daughter, Lueda Pilkerton.

She is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Thelma Cooper of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Robert J. Blair and wife, Sallie, of Martinsburg and Denny Blair and wife, Mary Lou, of Cleveland, Tenn.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces; and and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Sophia Church of God with Revs. Roy Dale Martin, James Bostic and Judy Farley conducting the service. The family will receive friends 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Burial will be at Hot Coal cemetery with friends of the Sophia Church of God serving as pallbearers.

“Mom Blair,” as she was affectionately called by many of her friends, spent her life in the ministry and church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our loss was heaven’s gain.

Ruth Lea Martin Carl

FAYETTEVILLE — Ruth Lea Martin Carl, 81, of Fayetteville, Rt. 1, passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at the home of her caregiver on Gatewood Road.

Born January 8, 1925 at Dusk Camp in Gilmer County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver D. Luzader and Floreed Allen Luzader.

Ruth was the retired owner of Martin Furniture Store of Oak Hill. She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Oak Hill. She was also a member of the Eastern Star No. 107 Oak Hill, WV Past Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls, Past Office Eastern Star, Past Worthy High Priestess of Judea Shrine No. 13 of Jerusalem, and the White Shrine of Beckley.

Survivors include her husband, Frederick C. Carl of Fayetteville, Rt. 1; two sons, William (Bill) Gene Martin and wife Connie of Deland, Fla. and Bobbie Joe Martin and wife Pamela of Hurricane; two grandchildren, Stephanie Martin Curran and Douglas Martin, both of Deland, Fla.; two great grandchildren, Sarah Curran and Joseph Curran, both of Deland, Fla.; and a niece, Jo Ann Luzader.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Dr. John Sauvage officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of food and flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 Lee St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Pallbearers will be Tom Rodes, Bud Fox, Mike Fox, Bill Martin, Bobby Martin, and Douglas Martin.

PINEVILLE — Charles Dodson, 52, of Pineville, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2006, at his residence.

Linda L. Fortner, 56, of Beckley, died Monday, December 25, 2006, at 6:30 a.m., at her home, following a short illness.
