Gladys Cales Fox

CHARLESTON — Gladys C. Fox, 94, Charleston, died Dec. 23, 2006, in Montgomery General Hospital. A resident of Pratt for 62 years prior to moving to Charleston in 2002, Mrs. Fox had resided in Montgomery General Elderly Care the past 18 months.

Born in Green Sulphur Springs on July 12, 1912, Mrs. Fox was the daughter of Silas G. and Mary Alice (Richmond) Cales.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, John R. Fox, Charleston; sisters, Mrs. Grace M. Eckle and Mrs. Ruby S. Wingfield, both of Beckley; brothers, Jesse T. Cales and Dewey F. Cales, both of Hinton; and Basil B. Cales, Sandstone.

Mrs. Fox was a graduate of Green Sulphur District High School in Sandstone, Class of 1929. She received a two-year teaching certificate from Concord College and a degree in Elementary Education from Morris Harvey College, and did graduate work from WVU. She began her teaching career at the age of 18 in a one room school in Summers County and retired from Kanawha County Schools in 1972.

A member of Old Kanawha Baptist Church, Pratt, Mrs. Fox was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and chairman of the Foreign Mission Circle. In Charleston, she attended Bible Center Church. During her lifetime she belonged to several professional and civic organizations, served as a volunteer at Montgomery General Elderly Care, taught in the WV Literacy Program, and tutored.

An avid quilter, she was a member of the Pratt Old Town Hall Quilters, who helped maintain the Old Town Hall building through proceeds from their Log Cabin quilts.

Mrs. Fox was recognized for public service to her community by Montgomery General Elderly Care, WCHS-TV, and the Town of Pratt.

Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Helen and Charles H. Cobb, Charleston, and her granddaughter, Mary Cathleen Cobb of Durham, N.C.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 28, at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with visitation an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London. David A. Jones, Pastor of Care Ministries, Bible Center Church, will officiate at the services, assisted by David Baughan, Pastor of Old Kanawha Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be sent to Old. Kanawha Baptist Church, P. 0.. Box 9, Pratt, WV 25162; Bible Center Church, 1111 Oakhurst Drive, Charleston, WV 25214; or Montgomery General Elderly Care Activities Program, P. 0. Amy Arlene Johnson

CYCLONE — Amy Arlene Johnson, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, December 21, 2006, at the age of 72 years, 20 days, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Born December 1, 1934 on Buffalo Creek, she was the baby daughter of 14 children of the late Oley and Juanita Daniels.

Amy loved to spend time with her large family playing cards, Bingo, looking at flowers, and enjoying dinner. Amy was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Johnson; two daughters, Alice Johnson and Debbie Johnson; a granddaughter, Sharon Denise; and 12 siblings.

Those left to cherish her memory are three sons, Gary Johnson and his wife Jenny of Yanceyville, NC, Richard Johnson of Loredo, and Junior Johnson and his wife Teresa of Loredo; four daughters, Joyce Workman and her husband Frank of Glen Daniels, Shelia Johnson of Glen Daniels, Pam Workman and her husband Ronald of Cyclone, and Judy Adkins and her husband Bill of Cyclone; a brother, William Daniels and his wife Helen of Neibert; 14 grandchildren, Billy, Missy, Sharon, Misty, John, Angel, Christy, Cletis, Bill, Eric, Amy, Bubba, Brad, and Becky; 12 great grandchildren, Shannon, Austin, Kaylee, Nathan, Emilee, Ethan, Cadence, Caleb, Emily, Bethany, Alyssa, and Eric; and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Amy’s life will be noon Wednesday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, with Chester Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Daniels cemetery, Curtis.

Casketbearers will be grandsons, Billy Jonhson, John Riley, Cletis Conn, II, Billy Adkins, Eric Adkins, Bradley Johnson, Junior Johnson, Bruce McCoy, and Michael Blackburn.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Tully Larew

GREENVILLE — Tully Larew, 74, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston.

Arrangements are incomplete at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Donna L. Lilly

SUTTON — Donna L. Lilly, 46, of Sutton, died from injuries received in an automobile accident at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, on U.S. Rt. 19, near Sutton.

Born November 4, 1960 at Elk Garden, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Gladys Powell Hartman.

Donna was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church at Martinsburg and a 1979 Graduate of the Elk Garden School.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Perry Hartman.

Survived by her husband of 25 years, Kevin Lilly; one son, Erik Lilly of Montgomery; one daughter, Sandi Valentine and husband Steve of Martinsburg; one granddaughter, Zoe Valentine; three brothers, Alan Hartman of Mt. Storm, Paul Hartman of Burlington and Terry Hartman of Mt. Storm; three sisters, Vera Elkins of Manassas, VA., Bonnie Evans of Southerland, VA., and Carol Mason of Gettysburg, PA; father and mother-in-law, Damon and Janet Yancey Lilly of Pipestem; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the David Burdock Funeral Home at Kitzmiller, Md. at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 with Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating. Burial will follow in the Kalbaugh cemetery at Elk Garden, WV.

Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors at Hinton from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the David Burdock Funeral Home at Kitzmiller, Md. from 7 until 9 P.M. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy should be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charity.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Flannie W. Meadows

Flannie W. Meadows, 83, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, died Sunday, December 24, 2006, at the Raleigh Center at Daniels.

Gladys Loraine Persinger

RAINELLE — Gladys Loraine Persinger, 68, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in the Heartland of Rainelle, following a long illness.

Born on Aug. 20, 1938 at Charmco, she was the daughter of the late Garrett and Minnie Terry Richmond.

Mrs. Persinger was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three sons, Tony, Steve, and Arnold Persinger; and two daughters, Donna Ray and Glenda Kay Persinger.

Survivors include five sons, Randy of Connecticut, Michael and wife Cheryl of Rainelle, Charlie, Kevin and wife Crystal, and Willard, all of North Carolina; a daughter, Jackie Littler and husband Brian of North Carolina; three sisters, Earla Ray Rick, Shirley Cook, and Marselene Midkiff of Crag; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Carl cemetery.

Friends may call today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Patrick Amos

CRAIGSVILLE — Charles Patrick Amos, 27, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. today at the West Virginia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel at Calvin.

The family will receive friends at the mausoleum chapel from 2 p.m. until time of the service today.

James Lester Adams Berry

James Lester Adams Berry, 84, of the Veterans Medical Center, Extended Care Home, Mountain Home, Tenn., passed away Dec. 20, 2006.

Born Jan. 8, 1922, at Wyco, Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Phillip Berry and Mattie Westbrook Berry.

Mr. Berry was a Pvt. of the United States Army. He was also a member of the Military Chapel at Mountain Home, Tenn.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by Nello Berry, Lola Mae Berry, Annie Lee Berry-Settle, George Herman Berry, Gladys Berry-Wooding, Betty Berry-Ross-Barrett and Phil Berry.

Survivors include his siblings, Lawrence Berry of Freeport, N.Y., Jessie Berry, Sr. of Raleigh, W.Va., Barbara Martin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Zelma Berry of Beckley, Johnetta Hill of White Sulphur Springs, and Eulalia Hamlet of Beckley.

Service will be 12 noon on Friday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel of Beckley, with Bishop Ernest Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until 12 noon Friday at the funeral parlor.

Iva Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Bland

Iva Gertrude “Trudy” Bland, 91, passed away Saturday Dec. 23, 2006, at the NHC Nursing Facility, at Sumter South Carolina, following a long illness.

Born April 15, 1915, at Kellysville, she was the daughter of the late William Opie and Laura Hill Thomas.

Mrs. Bland was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church of Beckley.

Her husband, James Stanley Bland; and two brothers and two sisters have preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet L. Frazier and her husband, Ralph, of Upland, CA.; Margaret Ann Miller and her husband, Denzil, of Sumter, S.C.; two sons James S. Bland, Jr., and his wife, Gloria, of Salem, Va., and Daniel D. Bland and his wife, Cheryl, of Spotsylvania, Va. Two sisters, Juanita Trumbo of Waynesboro, Va., and Joyce Sells and her husband, Don, of Naples, Fla.; one brother, Eugene Thomas and his wife, Nettie, of Winter Haven, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor John K. Jordan officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Prosperity.

Friends may gather with the family from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley is in charge of the arrangements.

Clyde E. Blankenship Sr.

RICHWOOD — Clyde E. Blankenship Sr., 62, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006.

At the request, there will be no viewing or funeral service. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Allen Wheeler Brown

Allen Wheeler Brown, 59, of Beckley, formerly of Hinton, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006.

Graveside rites will be 2 p.m. today, Dec. 27, 2006, at West Virginia Grafton National cemetery with the Rev. David F. Allen officiating. Burial will be in the WV Grafton National cemetery, Grafton, W.Va.

Lena Perdue Buckland

NARROWS, Va. — Lena Perdue Buckland, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 22, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service, 600 Main St., Narrows, Va. Burial will follow in the Shrader cemetery at Niday in Bland County.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral service.

The family requests that those sending memorial contributions please consider the Giles County Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society or East Chapel Community Church.
