Nina Shuck

PAX — Nina Shuck, 93, of Pax, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1912, at Wright, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Meadows and Maud Tincher Meadows.

Mr. Shuck was a former employee of Pettry’s Store at Pax. She was a member of Long Branch United Methodist Church and lived most of her adult life at Pax.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Shuck; sisters, Mae Ayers, Frances Carden, and Maudie Smith; and three brothers, Teddy, Sonnie and Richard Meadows.

Survivors include sons, Charles Shuck of Pax and Guy Shuck and wife, Dee, of Talbott, Tenn.; a daughter, Marjorie Kallas and husband, Peter, of Amherst, Ohio; sisters, Edna Sanford of Hinton, Gertrude Cox of Lockbridge and Loveda Hall of Mason, Ohio; grandchildren, Rose Estep, Cathy Ebenschweller and Sherry Stockard; a step granddaughter, Jenny Kallas; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Long Branch United Methodist Church, Pax, with the Rev. Carl Burrows officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Shirley Simms, 67, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005.

Heather Nichole Sizemore

MULLENS — Heather Nichole Sizemore, 11, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, in a Charleston hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Henry Hunter Smith

WEST HAMLIN — Henry Hunter Smith, 84, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, in a Huntington hospital. His wife, the Rev. Nancy H. White, was by his side.

Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late John Francis and Maryellen Hoover Smith.

He is survived by his devoted wife; a sister, Osa Smith McLaughlin of Marlinton; a brother, Charles E. Smith of Beckley; a daughter, Carol Ann Smith of Bluefield; a stepson, Charleston attorney David L. White; granddaughters, Kathryn and Adrianna White; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Brothers George C., James B., Jack E. and William S. Smith preceded him in death, as did sisters, Alice Smith Ervin, Annalee Smith Ervin, Marmette Smith Hancock and Gail Smith Millsap, and first wife, Helen Dillow Smith.

Hunter spent his childhood in Davis Stewart School, a Presbyterian children’s home. As a teenager, he lived in Bramwell and graduated from Bramwell High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during World War II, and as a guard at the Pottsdam Conference attended by President Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill.

Following his honorable discharge, he attended McLane Business College, then worked for N&W Railroad in Bluefield, retiring after 35 years. He then worked as a courier for Smith, Klien Beechum for 10 years. He served as a scoutmaster for Troop 3 of the Boy Scouts of America, served on the board of the Bluefield Union Mission, was an officer in the Kiwanis Club, as well as working as a tireless volunteer for a variety of civic projects.

Hunter loved God and the United Methodist Church and was an active church leader for most of his adult life. At various times while he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Bluefield, he sang in the choir, served as a Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Administrative Council, chairman of the trustees and was superintendent of Sunday school. More recently, as a member of West Hamlin United Methodist Church, he served as lay leader and was a delegate to the West Virginia Annual Conference.

Hunter grew delicious “Hunter Red” tomatoes from seeds he saved each year for decades. He also grew beautiful roses and enjoyed nurturing them. He was an avid gardener. Hunter was an accomplished stained glass craftsman, and designed and made a variety of window hangings as well as a stained glass window which is the focal point in the chapel in a Bluefield hospital.

He was greatly admired and loved.

Contributions in memory of Hunter may be made to West Hamlin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 328, West Hamlin, WV 25571, or to West Virginia Public Radio, 600 Capitol St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at West Hamilin United Methodist Church, with visitation 10 to 11 a.m.

Joy Faye Williams Trout

RAINELLE — Joy Faye Williams Trout, 70, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness.

Born June 5, 1935, in Greenbrier County, she was the daughter of the late James and Cora Williams.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church of Rainelle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ranzo Wallace Trout, in 1996; and a sister, Janelle.

Survivors include three sons, Ranzo W. Trout Jr. of White Sulphur Springs, Ronald Trout of Rainelle and Raymond Trout of Harrisonburg, Va.; four sisters, Jewell, Janice, Janet and Juanita; two brothers, Jack and Jimmy Williams; and four grandchildren, Travis Trout, Jeremy Kite, Justin Kite and Candace Trout.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Tom Tramel officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Geneva ‘Frances’ Tufts

FAYETTEVILLE — Geneva “Frances” Austin Tufts, 86, of Route 1, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at Hidden Valley Healthcare Center in Oak Hill.

Born March 3, 1919, in Rush, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lorraine Burdette Austin.

Mrs. Tufts was a retired clerk for The Modern and also was formerly employed at Woods Drug Store and Wiseman Drug.

She was a member of Kaymoor Community Church where she was church pianist for many years and a member of the ladies circle. She was an avid crafts person who enjoyed sewing and painting.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the caregivers at Mary’s Garden and Hidden Valley of Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Raymond C. Tufts; six brothers, Sam Austin Jr., James V. Austin, Frank Austin, Billy Ray Austin, George E. Austin and David H. Austin; and three sisters, Myrle Bates, Mozelle DeLonzo and Peggy Stewart.

Survivors include a son, Donald Tufts and wife, Karen, of Fostoria, Ohio; three daughters, Linda Gail Burke and husband, the Rev. Bill Burke, of Cleveland, Tenn., Brenda J. Fox and husband, James, of Route 1, Fayetteville, and Carolyn Miller and husband, Rick, of Louisville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. William Skeldon officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, Memorial and Honor, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720 or the Alzheimer’s Association.

John Brownice Arbuckle

LEWISBURG — Jon Brownice Arbuckle, 89, of Lewisburg, died Oct. 8, 2005.

He was born May 30, 1916, the son of N. Stuart and Mabel Leach Arbuckle.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James VanLear Arbuckle; a sister, Mary Stuart Osteen; his first wife, Ann Smith Arbuckle; and his second wife, Edith Kindig Arbuckle.

He is survived by his sons, John B. Arbuckle, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, and J. Albert Arbuckle and his wife, Ejay; five grandchildren, J.Stuart Arbuckle and wife, Jill Ann, Edith A. Wine, Todd V. Arbuckle, Julian F. Arbuckle, and Abygail L. Arbuckle; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Stuart Arbuckle, Kris Ann Arbuckle, Emily Mae Smith Arbuckle, Madeline Elizabeth Wine and Rileigh Belle Wine; three stepchildren, Julia Ann Childers and her husband, Scottie, John Kindig and his wife, Debbie, and Vernon Kindig and his wife, Veronica; sisters-in-law, Katherine Smith Kelly and Elizabeth Welch; a cousin that was more like a brother, T. Alex Arbuckle; and two special nephews, Edward and James Osteen.

Mr. Arbuckle attended Lewisburg public schools, Greenbrier Military School, and West Virginia University. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown. He was a lifetime member of Clifton Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon, clerk of the session and Sunday School teacher at Lewis Chapel. He was a charter member of the Maxwelton Puritan Club and helped to establish their ice cream stand at the State Fair of West Virginia, where he volunteered until his health prohibited.

He was a member of Greenbrier Lodge No. 42, A.F.&A.M., Ronceverte Chapel No. 21, R.A.M., Greenbrier Commandery No. 15, K.T., Beni Kedem Shriners and the Greenbrier Valley Shrine Club. He was a former dairy farmer and owner of Maplewood Farm at his death. He worked for 14 years as a salesperson for Martin & Jones Hardware. In 1959, he entered the insurance business with his father and at the time of his death was secretary-treasurer of Farmers Home Fire Insurance Co. and president of Arbuckle Insurance Agency. He served as president of both the West Virginia Association of Insurance Companies and the Professional Insurance Agents of West Virginia. He served on the board of Ronceverte National Bank/One Valley Bank and at one time was a partner in Bonnie Mist Car Wash.

Mr. Arbuckle looked forward to spending his winters in Cape Coral, Fla., and was an avid Mountaineers fan.

The family extends special thanks to his care givers, J. Albert Arbuckle, Kathy Brunty, Juanita Powell and Mary Elizabeth Garten, whose love and compassion made his final months possible and very comfortable.

A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at Clifton Presbyterian Church, Maxwelton, on Tuesday at 1 p.m., with Janice L. Johnson, M.Div. officiating. Private interment with Masonic graveside rites will precede the service.

The family will receive friends at McCraw Funeral Home, 304 Courtney Drive, Lewisburg, from 3 until 5 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. today.

FAIRDALE — Mildred Louise Blankenship, 80, of Rockhouse Road, Fairdale, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, in a Beckley hospital, following a long illness.

Mary Elizabeth Alder

WILLIAMSBURG — Mary Elizabeth Alder, 44, of Williamsburg, passed away peacefully Friday, June 22, 2007.

Service will be noon Tuesday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Emory W. ‘Jack’ Anderson

Emory W. “Jack” Anderson, 71, of Beckley, formerly of Prince, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born at McKendree on July 2, 1935, he was the son of Maggie McGuffin Anderson of Hilltop and the late Emery R. Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

Mr. Anderson had proudly served at the White House under President Dwight Eisenhower’s staff. Mr. Anderson had retired from the West Virginia Turnpike Commission, where he had worked as an electrician, and in the early years of his life he had been employed by C&O Railroad.

Mr. Anderson was a member of Packs Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Delma Domingues Anderson; his son, Emory Wesley Anderson II of Beckley; three brothers, James P. Anderson and wife, Alice, of Maple Fork, David K. Anderson and wife, Sandy, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Pastor Thomas Anderson and wife, Julie, of Beckley; a sister, Judith Appler of Oak Hill; two grandchildren, Steven Wesley Anderson of Beckley and Gage Adam Anderson of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Thomas Anderson officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110.
