Ricky Dale Skeens

WHITESVILLE — Ricky Dale Skeens, 50, passed away Friday, April 7, 2006, after a sudden illness.

Born June 24, 1955, he was the son of Carl Skeens of Shrewsberry and the late Delma “Dale” Burgess Skeens.

Ricky was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Charleston. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hattie and Emil Burgess and Roy and Belva Skeens.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Morris Skeens, and daughter, Shannon Skeens Clay, of Whitesville; granddaughters, Crystal Honaker, Hannah and Kalynn of Whitesville; brothers, Jimmy Skeens and wife, Lynn, of Sylvester, Jack and wife, Tammy, of Twin Populars and David and wife, Trish, of Leewood; a sister, Donna and husband, Sam, of Pikeville, Ky.; and many cousins and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Valley Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Gary Maynor officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Robert ‘Dennis’ Smith

FAYETTEVILLE — Robert “Dennis” Smith, 56, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at the home of his sister, Lou Feazell, following a brief illness.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.

Margie E. Stone

ANSTED — Margie E. Stone, 80, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2006, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born April 20, 1925, at Nuttallburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter A. Pridemore and Thelma Wood Pridemore.

She attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Hico and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Carl R. Stone of Ansted; two daughters, Linda Barton and Robert C. Barton, and Shelley D. Toney and Harry, all of Ansted; a son, Carl Robert Stone Jr. of Ansted; five sisters, Norma Fox of Fayetteville, Charlotte Hizer of Orlanda, Fla., Drema Withrow of North Carolina, Patricia Malone of California and Carol Smales of Ansted; seven brothers, Clifford Pridemore of Atlanta, Ga., Dennis Pridemore of Fayetteville, Franklin Pridemore of Gatewood, Richard Pridemore of Oak Hill, Pat Pridemore of Fayetteville, John Pridemore of Ohio and Pete Pridemore of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Mr. William Beall officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Hico.

The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James Curtis Talbert

QUINWOOD — James Curtis Talbert, 78, passed away Thursday, April 20, at Autumn Way Nursing Home in Rupert.

Born Nov. 25, 1927, at Widen, he was the son of the late Ernest Clyde Talbert and the late Minnie Pierson Talbert Holcomb.

Mr. Talbert was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herman Holcomb, Ernie Holcomb and Robert Lee Talbert.

Survivors include four sisters, Lucille Wildman of Parkersburg, Kathleen Dick of Richwood, Ruby Craft of Rupert and June Smith of Hines; a brother, Shirley Holcomb of Orient Hill; a half sister, Catherine McCoury of Canton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the funeral home. There will be no evening visitation.

Madeline Thompson

Madeline Thompson, 82, of Beckley, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Steward Wynne, 53, of Beckley, died Friday, April 21, 2006, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Jane West Kauffelt

DANVILLE, Va. — Jane West Kauffelt, 91, of Danville, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005. She had been in declining health since April 2004, and a resident of Stratford House, Danville, since July 2004.

Mrs. Kauffelt was born Aug. 5, 1914, in Lima, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Kenneth Johnston and Helen Russell West.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Thornberry West; husband, Henry Harris Kauffelt; and a son, Henry David Kauffelt.

A strong Presbyterian, she was a former member and Sunday school teacher at Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, and Pembroke Methodist Church, Pembroke, Va. A graduate of West Virginia University, she was a longtime Greenbrier County educator.

Survivors include a son, Michael K. Kauffelt and his wife, Linda, of Danville; daughter-in-law, Virginia Ann Kauffelt of Newport, Va.; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also fondly remembered by her dedicated full-time nurse, Ann Stamps of Danville, and the staff and her many friends at Stafford House.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with Mr. Randall Clingenpeel and Mr. Rob Kauffelt officiating. Graveside rites and burial will follow in Riverview cemetery, Ronceverte.

The family will receive friends two hours before service Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity.

Joseph Ervin Lafferty

Joseph Ervin Lafferty, formerly of Martin, Ky., beloved father of James Phillip and wife, Susan Lafferty, of Stanaford and G. Ann Lafferty of Printer, Ky., passed from this earthly life to be with his wife, Opal Isaac Lafferty, and son, Leonard Joseph Lafferty, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005.

Surviving brothers and sisters include Bascom Lafferty and wife, Dorothy, of Hot Springs, Ark., Dick Lafferty and wife, Charlotte, of Hamilton, Ohio, Bill Branham of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Ellen Douridas and husband, Bud, of Columbus, Nellie Salisbury of Columbus and Ruth Holt of Martin.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Amber, Aaron, Melissa, Megan and Jonas; three great-grandchildren; and many other friends and family from Floyd County.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Beaver.

He was a veteran of World War II as a member of the Merchant Marines. He retired from the Veterans hospital in Beckley and operated a business with his son Jim.

Service will be 4 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family one hour before service today at the funeral home.

Glen R. Laxton

PINEVILLE — Glen R. Laxton, 70, of Pineville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at his residence following a long illness.

Born Aug. 31, 1935, at Pineville, he was the son of the late John and Nola Pendry Laxton.

Mr. Laxton was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local 7692 of Lynco. He was a member of Rockcastle Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his cabin on the family farm.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Garnett Laxton, Merlie Scaggs, Sylvia Ellison and Maxine Stewart; and three brothers, Thomas, Roby and Charlie Laxton.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Linda Hatfield Laxton; a son, Glen “Tiny” Laxton Jr. and his wife, Robin, of Pineville; a daughter, Peggy Bishop and her husband, Chris, of Rogersville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Jimmy Clark and his wife, Tina, of Glen Fork and Charlie Clark and his wife, Amy, of Glen Daniel; a stepdaughter, Donna Jones and her husband, Dave, of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren, Derek and Brett Laxton, James, Shawn and Autumn Clark, Amanda Nichols, and Stephanie and Aaron Jones; a sister, Alma Gainer of Pineville; two brothers, Alfred Laxton and his wife, Irene, of Pineville and Buddy Laxton and his wife, Annette, of Pasadena, Md.; mother-in-law, Cora Hatfield of Beckley; three brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Laxton Family cemetery, Bearhole Road.

Pallbearers will be Michael Laxton, Terry Laxton, Roger Laxton, Mark Laxton, Robert Laxton, Charlie Clark, James Clark and Shawn Clark.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, is serving the Laxton family.

Icie Pearl McKinney

Icie Pearl McKinney, 81, formerly of Vance Drive, Beckley, passed away at 8:49 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at her home following a short illness.

Icie was a graduate of Mark Twain High School.

Icie was born in Streeter on July 14, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Luther and Pearl McKinney.

Icie was a resident of Beckley for 22 years.

Icie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her gentle spirit was felt deeply by all of her family.

She was an active member of Beckley Regular Baptist Church for nearly 20 years, before moving to Alexandria, Va., where she was a member of Downtown Baptist Church.

Icie worked as a bookkeeper for 11 years for Joe L. Smith Inc., Home Insurance Agency, WJLS radio station and Biggs-Johnston-Withrow Printing before moving to Virginia. She worked for 13 years and retired from Jaffey Printing Co. in Washington, D.C.

She currently lived in Denver, N.C., close to her daughter.

Other than her parents, Icie was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Meadows Bowling, in May 2005.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are her daughter, Patsy Meadows and her husband, Roy, of Denver, N.C.; three grandchildren, William Clayton Meadows of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., Roy Michael Meadows and wife, Nancy, of Maiden, N.C., and Melissa Meadows Sigmon of Denver; three great-grandchildren, Clayton Sigmon of Denver, and Bryan Pearson and Kayla Meadows of Maiden; two sisters, Fern Muse and husband, Edward, of Faquay Varina, N.C., and Mildred Price and husband, Otto, of West Liberty, Ohio; and a brother, Luther Glyn McKinney and his wife, Mary, of South Windsor, Conn.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Bud Isreal officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Troy Lee Sims

RAINELLE — Troy Lee Sims, 74, of Loops Road in Rainelle, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, surrounded by family and friends.

Born Feb. 17, 1931, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Will and Bertie Kenney Sims.

He was a conductor and machinist for C&O Railroad and a mechanic for Boley Chevrolet, as well as a farmer.

He served in the Army during the Korean War for two years. Mr. Sims was a member of Big Sewell Baptist Church of Rainelle.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Alvena Sims; a son, Burton Sims and his wife, Debora, of Loops Road; three grandchildren, Matthew Sims and wife, Janet, of Danese, and Susan and Samantha Sims of Loops Road; three sisters, Mary Knight and Martha Ellison of Largo, Fla., and Chila Sherman of South Charleston; a brother, David Sims of Grovetown, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Troy will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Kermit Hunter Jr. and Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice, 610 Church St., Summersville, WV 26651.
