Curtis Elbert Mills, 88, of MacArthur, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at his home following a short illness.
Born in Raleigh County on May 19, 1918, he was the son of the late Baxter and Onvia Lemon Mills.
Mr. Mills was a retired coal miner, and was a former barber and welder. He was a member of the UMWA, was a member of Woodrow Wilson High School Football Hall of Fame, and had received an Ivory Eagle mounted on a lump of coal for his athletic ability from Woodrow Wilson High School. Mr. Mills was a life member of the Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606.
He was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Baxter Mills; and a brother, Arless Mills.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ada Mae Spangler Mills; two daughters, Miranda Maliborski and husband, Henry, of Longwood, Fla., and Carla Ball and husband, William, of Piedmont, S.C.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special care givers, Genny Wood, Betty Poe, Jean and Gary Cooper, Mary and Frank Baird, and Fred Yancey.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service today.

Helen B. O’Brien
RONCEVERTE — Helen B. O’Brien, 85, of Ronceverte, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness.
Born Feb. 25, 1921, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Laura Fink O’Brien.
Ms. O’Brien was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Ronceverte, member of Circle No. 3, and Sunday school teacher for 26 years for the Doughty Bible Class, member of the United Methodist Women and treasurer for 20 years, graduate of Greenbrier High School, and was retired from the federal prisons system, Alderson.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Jane O’Brien and Mary Madeline O’Brien; a sister-in-law, Helena O’Brien; and three brothers, Kenneth O’Brien, John O’Brien and Jerry O’Brien.
Survivors include a sister, Geraldine Shaver and husband, Charles, of Union; two sisters-in-law, Betty O’Brien and Ruth O’Brien, both of Ronceverte; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Ronceverte, with Pastor Mike Estep officiating. Burial will be in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Margaret Evans Treadway
OAK HILL — Mary Margaret Evans Treadway, 84, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Sept. 3, 1922, at Boomer, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Minnie Ann Halstead Evans.
She was a retired accountant for Fayette Clinic, Lochgelly.
Mrs. Treadway was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill. She was also a member of the West Virginia Baptist Women’s Convention, active in the Senior Citizens, and an avid participant in hunting and fishing.
Her husband, Curtis Treadway, preceded her in death in 1983.
Survivors include her sister, Faye Tompkins of Oak Hill; a niece, Mary Lou Legg and husband, Wayne, of Scarbro; a nephew, Michael Tompkins of Morgantown; and three great-nephews, Erik Legg and wife, Cindy, Phillip Legg and wife, Lora, and Kace Legg.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. David Richardson officiating. Burial will be at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Anne Sydenstricker Vaughn
LEXINGTON, Va. — Anne Sydenstricker Vaughn, wife of Homer Harlow Vaughn, now deceased, was born Aug. 17, 1914, at Frost, where her father, John Sydenstricker, was operating a sawmill and lumber camp.
When the area was cut over, her father and mother, Caroline Correll Sydenstricker, bought the farm “Big Survey” in Monroe County. It was the home of Caroline’s father, William Lewis Correll. The family lived there until some of the older children were ready for high school.
The farm was traded for a home in Alderson, where her brother, Raymond, and sister, Catherine, finished their schooling, and later Anne finished too. She attended Armstrong Junior College in Alderson and Concord College in Athens.
She married Homer Harlow Vaughn in 1935. Three children were born to them, Gerald Lyle Vaugh, who resides at Fancy Hill, Va., John Correll Vaughn of Hickory, N.C., and Suzanne Pracna, who lives in Cedarpines, Calif.
She is survived by four grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hope Curry Everitt and Catherine Friel; and three brothers, Mason, Clair and Raymond. Her husband died in 1994.
She was a member of Elliotts’ Hill Methodist Church in Rockbridge County, Va.
Memorial service will be at Jonhson Memorial Methodist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Same Groves officiating. Remains will be interred at Alderson cemetery.
Memorial contributions may go to the Rockbridge Regional Library where Mrs. Vaughn worked for 27 years.

David Booth Jr.
BALLARD — David Booth Jr., 70, of Ballard, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Princeton Community Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1936, at Lindside, and was the son of the late David H. and Bertha F. McGhee Booth.
Mr. Booth was a truck driver, having last worked at Fairchild International in Glen Lyn, Va. He was a member of Peterstown United Methodist Church, and was an avid football fan, a loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Henry Booth and Dennis Booth; and a sister, Willie Louise Wilson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mescal Mann Booth; four sons, Steve Booth and wife, Abby, of Austin, Texas, Tim Booth and wife, Eliska, of Lindside, Mark Booth and wife, Tina, of Radford, Va., and Chris Booth and wife, Mary Ann, of Peterstown; a daughter, Lisa Meadows and husband, Barry, of Peterstown; three brothers, Roger Booth of Bear, Del., Teddy Booth of Lindside and Eddie Booth of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sisters, Mary Midkiff of Rich Creek, Va., Jean Spence of Lindside and Sandy Blankenship of Narrows, Va.; his mother-in-law, Sadie Mann of Ballard; four grandchildren, Sabrina Stutts and husband, Garry, Cory Booth, Joey Booth and Elijah Booth; five stepgrandchildren, Adam and Kayla Mann, Ethan Hinton, Sara Bolin and Jeremy Jones; and two special great-grandchildren, Jada and Matthew Stutts.
Service will be 6 p.m. today at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with the Rev. Andy Howdock and the Rev. Melissa Shortridge officiating.

Glen R. McDaniel
On Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in the evening hours, Glen McDaniel passed away with his family gathered at his side. He was in his 94th year.
Born Glen Roy McDaniel on Feb. 20, 1912, at Layland, he was the youngest of 12 children born to the late Frank and Rebecca Jones McDaniel. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Glen spent his early years at Fireco and Jacksonville, Fla. He had been a resident of Raleigh County since 1970, living on Tolley Drive in Beckley since 1980, coming from Bolt. He was of the Baptist faith, having last attended church at Bradley.
A 40-year veteran of the coal industry, he was affiliated with the UMWA for 12 years, and Glen was blessed with a long and active life. He drove until last August. He loved to garden, was meticulous with his lawn, enjoyed watching baseball and football games and immensely enjoyed family get-togethers. He loved a good meal.
In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Icie Isabelle McDaniel, on Sept. 7, 1999, and his mother-in-law, Zadie Daniels, this past summer.
He was the dear father of Glen Robert McDaniel of Smyrna, Del., Nancy Ireland of Dover, Del., Jerry McDaniel and his wife, Sandra, of MacArthur and Cookie Worley and her husband, Phyllip, of Bolt; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Dewey Lowe and Daniel Legg officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary and one hour before service Sunday.

Malada Morgan
OCEANA — Malada M. Morgan, 82, of Oceana, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, following a long illness.
Born April 30, 1924, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Van Buren Mullins and Mary Elizabeth Workman Mullins.
Mrs. Morgan was of the Baptist faith. She loved playing the guitar, singing, crocheting and reading her Bible.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, James Delford Oliver and Van Lester Oliver.
Survivors include a son, Roger Earl Oliver and his wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Stella Joan Marin and her husband, Leonardo, of Cleveland, Ohio, Marcella Mae Hood and her husband, Paul, of Fairdale and Beulah Faye Shumate and her husband, David, of Oceana; two brothers, Dallas Mullins and his wife, Ruth, of Richmond, Va., and Garland Mullins of Cabin Creek; a sister, Pansy Perdue of Pineville; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mariam Sweeny of Fayetteville.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Ronald Adkins and the Rev. Timmy Brewster officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
