Clara Marie Davis Gibson

Clara Marie Davis Gibson, 95, of Hurricane died Nov. 22, 2004. Services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton.

John Wyatt Evans

John Wyatt “Jack” Evans, 81, of Cross Lanes passed away Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Thomas Memorial Hospital of complications following surgery.

He was born April 7, 1923, in Charleston.

He was a member of the first graduating class of Stonewall Jackson High School in 1941.

In 1943, Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 21st Marines 3rd Marine Division. The 3rd Marine Division became part of the invasion forces in the Pacific for the battles of Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Following the war, he attended Morris Harvey College. He was a 1977 graduate of the University of Hard Knocks, an honor given to him by the late Jim Comstock, one of his heroes. He was also an honorary alumnus of Alderson-Broaddus College.

He retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation with over 30 years of service. When he retired, he was manager of buildings, building design and construction. He was a member of Highlawn Presbyterian Church since 1955 and a 40-year resident of St. Albans before moving to Cross Lanes in 1995.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty Tincher Evans; father, John B. Evans; mother, Sally Abbitt Evans; and brother, Thomas Coleman Evans.

Jack is survived by daughters and a son-in-law, Kimberly and John W. Johnson of Charleston and Judith Brown of Washington , D.C.; and a son and daughter-in-law, Kacy and Patty Evans. Three grandchildren survive him: Charles Wyatt Evans of St. Albans, Aaron Brown of Washington , D.C. and Anna Murphy and husband, Tony Wright, of Charleston. He had one great-granddaughter, Madison Victoria Wright of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House, a Kanawha Hospice Care Inc. program, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311, to show our continued gratitude for the wonderful care given to Jack's wife, Betty.

Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Lee Dunn

Wilma Lee Dunn, 75, of Apple Grove, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at home. Funeral services were held 2 P.M. Friday at Barton Chapel Church; burial in Church Cemetery. Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, W.Va, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert V. Fife

Robert V. Fife, 79, of Huntington died Monday, November 22, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to Green Acres Regional Center, P.O. Box 240, Lesage, WV, 25537.

Robert V. (Bob) Fife

Robert V. (Bob) Fife, 79, of Huntington, went to live with the Lord, Monday, November 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Jamie Jefferson. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. military graveside services were conducted by VFW Post 9738. Bob was born April 15, 1925, in Wayne County, a son of the late David Austin and Josephine Adams Fife. He served in WWII in the South Pacific, enlisting July 8, 1943, with the 464th Engineer Depot Company. Discharged January 20, 1946, re-enlisted February 7, 1946, for his second term. He was honorably discharged August 9, 1947, ranked Sergeant TEC 4 Regular Army. He was preceded in death by Ruth, Elsie, Marie, Annie, Frank, Howard, George, Lawrence, Paul and Arnold. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Juanita R. Holland Fife; five daughters, Betty Cashdollar (Don) Higginbotham of Lake Placid, Fla., Rhonda Fife of Huntington, Darlene (Mitch) Johnson of Dallas, Texas , Cheryl (Dale) Adkins of Huntington, Rose Fife of Huntington; one son, Bobby (Sheila) Fife Jr. of Lesage; two sisters, Irene Carter of Lesage, Edith Bailey Hester of Huntington; one brother, Donald L. Fife of Gallipolis, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Robert V. III, Heather, Susan, Tarrah, Jennifer, Jeremy, Andrea, Michelle, Alisha, Teddy, Alena, and one great-grandchild, Nathan. Special thanks to 6th floor Oncology team, Dr. Di Stefano, Dr. Campbell and Dr. Daniels. Memorial contributions may be made to Green Acres Regional Center P.O. Box 240, Lesage, WV 25537 for Daddy's little angel, Rhonda.

Clara Marie Davis Gibson, 95 of Hurricane went home to be with her Lord Monday, November 22, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Kim Stone and the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in Ball Cemetery. She was born June 3, 1909, a daughter of the late Rodrick and Viola Cochran Davis. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Cline Gibson; two sons and one daughter. She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Wilma Bird of Hurricane, Faye Cobb and her husband, Don, of Huntington and Maxine Bowen of Huntington; three sons and daughter-in-laws, Glen Gibson and special daughter-in-law Betty of Hurricane, Carroll Gibson and wife, Kay, of Milton and Lester “Doug” Gibson and Debbie Thomas of St. Albans; 20 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; a host of friends and a special friend, Michelle Lacy from Hospice of Dunbar.

Donald Leo Jordan

Donald Leo Jordan, 67, of Ona went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 23, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Freedom Baptist Church, Milton, with the Rev. Kim Stone and the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Donald was born October 31, 1937, a son of the late Harry and Emma Scarberry Jordan. He retired after 40 years of services with the United States Postal Service and spent his last several years working with the Pressley Ridge Schools, Ona. Donald was a devoted member of Freedom Baptist Church, Milton. Donald is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Stewart Jordan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Tim Hysell, and Lori and Chuck Wellman, all of Milton; five grandchildren that were the love of his life, Justin Hysell, Madison Hysell, Jordan Hancock, Kara Hancock and Dylan “Opie” Wellman; one brother, Grover Jordan of Milton; five sisters, Joyce Parsons of Milton, Geraldine Webb of Lesage, Lillian Stowasser of Hurricane, Faye Wilson of Milton and Janie Hannah of Worthington, Ky. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Brinegar

Beatrice Brinegar, 93, of Branchland, W.Va. passed away Thursday, November 25, 2004, at home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 28, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Russell “Buck” Adkins and Minister Emual Adkins. Burial in Brinegar Cemetery. She was born March 24, 1911, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Sara Plymale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzia Brinegar. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Perry, Darlene Adkins and Frances Tomblin; three stepdaughters, Alberta Perry, Eileen Perry and Estelle Watts; three sons, Everette, Ezra and Darrell Brinegar; one sister, JoAnn Elders; one brother, Ernest Plymale; 30 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren.

William Michael Ross

William Michael Ross, 53, of Huntington, went to be with his Lord Friday, November 26, 2004 from St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 29, 2004 at Good Shepherd Freewill Baptist Church of which he was a member, by the Rev. Ronald Page. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Mr. Ross was born July 15, 1951, in Cabell. County, West Virginia, son of the late William Jennings Ross and the late Glenna Virginia Berry Ross. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Ross. Mr. Ross is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Ferrol Cotton of Huntington, with whom he made his home, Joan Duncan of Lesage, Selena Maynard of Huntington, Judy Adkins of Barboursville and Karen Lane of Hurricane; and one brother, Jimmie D. Ross of Defiance, Ohio. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Simmons

Charles E. Simmons, 80, of Huntington, W.Va., died November 24, 2004, at his residence after a long illness. He was born September 6, 1924, in Cabell County, West Virginia to the late James and Julia Pyles Simmons. Also, four brothers preceded him in death. He was retired from Houdaille Industries, Huntington after 32 years of service. He had attended Bethel Temple Assembly of God and was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Effingham Simmons of Huntington; son, Jarrell (Marlene) Simmons of Huntington; daughters, Lois (Jimmy) Barber of Fayetteville N.C., Misty (Michael) Nicholas of Huntington, Yvonna Roach of Huntington; grandchildren, Lane, Jimmy, Brandi and Ryan and two special caregivers, Jennifer Bailey and Sally Scheibelhood. Funeral services were held November 29, 2004, at Beard Mortuary, Huntington with the Rev. Joe Phillips officiating. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Huntington, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #9738.

Mary F. Slayton

Mary F. Slayton, 67, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord on November 26, 2004, at her residence. We honor the precious loving memory of a true lady, God loving Pentecostal Christian, who dedicated her life to the Holy Trinity of God, her husband, children and grandchildren. She was always happiest seeing the true wonders of God's creations. She was born Mary F. Long on April 20, 1937, the daughter of the late Andrew J. Long and Hazel Flora Long of Huntington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sissy Long who was 2 years old, and one brother, John W. Long; one son, Donnie “PeeWee” Slayton. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lee Slayton Sr. She is also survived by her brother, David G. Long of Huntington; four sons, Roger Slayton of Oklahoma, Lee A. Slayton Jr., Andrew M. Slayton and James E. Slayton, all of Huntington, and daughters, Rebecca Slayton Moore of Huntington and Melissa A. Slayton of Milton. She has many loving grandchildren, James L. Slayton Jr., Jeremy S. Slayton, Faith A. Slayton, Andrew M. Slayton Jr. and Bethany Slayton. She is also survived by numerous relatives and friends, nieces and nephews, Joshua, Johny and Jessica Long, Ronnie and Ashley Slayton Special friends, Eva and Roger Plumley, Donna Lyons, Greg Adkins and Cheryl Menendez, who is more a part of the family than a friend. November 26, 2004, was a good day for Mom, the Lord called her home. She is without pain now. It is a sad day for those who will have to live without her. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 30, 200.4, at Beard Mortuary with Pastor Dewey Bias officiating. Gravesides services will be a later date.

Charles “Charlie” Lloyd Weaver

Charles “Charles” Lloyd Weaver, 56, of Ona, W.Va., beloved husband of Janet Rider Weaver, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 28, 2004, at the Wallace Home, Milton, by Pastor Paul Meadows. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born August 12, 1948, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Virgil and Agnes Lewis Weaver. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Virgil Lee Weaver Jr. and John Donald “Don” Weaver. He graduated from Milton High School in 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and after 29 years at Akzo Nobel, retired in May 2004. He is survived by his wife, Janet Rider Weaver; two daughters and one son-in-law, Michelle and Ben James and Melissa Weaver, all of Florida; two stepsons, Matt and Adam Massie of Ona; three wonderful grandchildren, Amanda and Robert Linkous and Alexis Massie; two brothers and sisters-in-law Richard and Ella Mae Weaver of Texas , and Raymond and Linda Weaver of Ona; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Danny Nance of South Carolina; his mother and father-in-law, Oscar and Doris Rider of Ona; two sisters-in-law, Becky Rider of Ona, and Donna Blake and her fiance Jeff White of Barboursville; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randy and Laura Rider and Tim and Brenda Rider, all of Milton; several special nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Matt Massie, Jared Childers, Fred Lunsford, Dick Grass, Jeff Thornton and Greg Weaver. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kirti Jain, Mindy Hanshaw and the staff at Huntington Cancer Center.Tamara S.

Sebert L. Harrison

Sebert Leroy Harrison, 76, of Nitro died January 18, 2005, at home.

He was retired from International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 132 B. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 179, a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Melbourne, Florida, and a Christian.

Surviving: wife, Noca Fisher Harrison; sisters, Irene Ranson and Jo King, both of Liberty; a host of other family and friends.

Service was held Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Ralph W. Workman officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Paul T. Lamb

Paul T. Lamb, 90, of Winfield died Monday, January 17, 2005, at his residence.

He was retired from Leslie Lumber Co. with 14 years of service. He was a member of Winfield Church of Christ and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Retha G. Lamb.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Sharron and Richard Smith of Jamestown, Tennessee; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Barbara Lamb of Winfield and Paul O. and Linda Lamb of Huber Heights, Ohio; sisters, Margaret Fincham of Stonewood, Helen Atey of Columbus, and Virginia Morgan of Hepzibah; brother, Annett Lamb of Hepzibah; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, with Minister George F. Erwin officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.

Lois L. Scarberry

Lois L. Hinkle Scarberry, 75, of Culloden died January 17, 2005, in Cabell-Huntington Hospital following a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late Clayton and Annie Keaton Hinkle. She was also preceded in death by a brother, George Hinkle.

She was retired from Jones Processing. She was a Baptist by faith and a 51-year resident of Culloden.

Surviving: her husband of 51 years, Nelson Scarberry; son, Danny E. Scarberry of Milton; grandchildren, Danny E. Scarberry Jr. and Tammi L. Scarberry, both of Hurricane; sisters, Katherine Harris of Dry Creek, Freda McCarty of Hurricane and Mary Christian of Culloden; brothers, Darrell Hinkle and Freddie Hinkle, both of Culloden.

Service was held Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Bell officiating. Burial was in Sycamore Cemetery, Hurricane.

Thomas F. Roush

Thomas Frederick Roush, 47, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, formerly of Winfield, died January 17, 2005, at Franklin Health Care Center, Rocky Mount.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carence and Mary McKinney Roush.

He was a disabled employee of Orlando Paving Company and was a graduate of Winfield High School.

Surviving: brother, Tony Roush of Salem, Virginia; sister, Dixie Chittum of Roanoke, Virginia.

A memorial service was held Friday, January 21, 2005, at Valley View Memorial Park Chapel of the Guardian Angel, Hurricane, with Mr. Clifford Chittum officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Drema Ann Harless

Drema Ann Dunfee Harless of Grant Town, formerly of Hometown, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Kenneth Harless, parents, Otis and Icie Propps Dunfee, and sisters, Alberta Glandon and Allene Williams.

Surviving: son and his wife, Charles Gregory and Pamela Harless of Barrackville; grandchildren, Charles Corey Harless, Alexandria Faye and Aaron Morgan Hamler, all of Barrackville, and Cortney A. Harless of Eleanor; brother, Charles Monroe Dunfee of Ashford; beloved pet, Prissy; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Service was held Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Garens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Thelma Sue Estep

Thelma Sue Estep, 70, of Hurricane, formerly of St. Albans, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.

She was a homemaker, and a graduate of Nitro High School. She loved to play bridge and was an avid bowler. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Nitro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Winnie Miller.

Surviving: husband, Keith; sons and their wives, Jeff and Debbie of Uniontown, Ohio and Alan and Kim of Apex, North Carolina; twin grandchildren, Nathaniel and Kaitlyn.

Service was held Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Tom McDowell officiating. Interment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
