Mary Belle Polley Hale

RICHMOND, Va. — Mary Belle Polley Hale, 82, widow of Clyde Franklin Hale, died Friday, May 5, 2006, in Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, Va. She formerly resided in Fort Myers, Fla., and Beckley.

She was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Beckley, daughter of Emma Katherine Polley and John Gordon Polley.

She attended Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Mo., and graduated from West Virginia University.

She is survived by daughters, Frances Hale Twigg and husband, James Twigg, of Richmond and Polley Hale Cunningham and husband, William Cunningham, of Huntington; grandchildren, Kathleen Twigg of Richmond, Katherine Cunningham of Mountain View, Calif., and Richard Cunningham and wife, Emily, of Washington, D.C.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Ave., Richmond, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Rose officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Interment will be at St. Paul Presbyterian Church, Morristown, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army.

Jerry Davis Harvey

BROOKLYN, Ohio — Jerry Davis Harvey, 55, passed away May 4, 2006.

He was born in West Virginia and was the son of the late James and Maude Massey Harvey.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Debra (nee Fogler) Harvey; children, Jennifer, Jerry (Jennifer) Jr., Jason (Amanda) and Joshua Harvey; mother, Maude Cole; many “adopted” children; papa of Abagail, Logan and Luke; sister, Dolly (James) Hoke; brother, Bobby; and his seven Bichons.

He was preceded in death by his father, James; brothers, Billy and Roger; and stepfather, Chester Cole.

Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Carlson Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 1642 Pearl Road (1/2 mile south of Route 303), Brunswick, Ohio.

Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

Marjorie Anita Hoge

MULLENS — Marjorie Anita Hoge passed away at the age of 80 at the home of her daughter, Janie Anita Forren, and her husband, Butch, of Claymont, Del., on Wednesday, May 3, 2006.

Born Sept. 21, 1925, at Pax, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Mary Janie Saunders Rutherford.

Although she had resided with her daughter in Delaware for the past two years, she had been a 72-year resident of Mullens. She was a former employee of the C&P Telephone Co., where she was a telephone operator in the Mullens office.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Hoge, and four sisters, Gladys Jared, Helen Burcham, Thelma Shifflette and Hazel Moreno.

Marjorie’s pride and joy was her only child, Janie Anita Forren, and her husband, Clarence “Butch” Forren, of Claymont. She has left an everlasting legacy of love and compassion in her surviving family which also includes a granddaughter, Anita Marie Holz, and a grandson, Joseph Patrick Forren. In addition, she is also survived by her 11 great-grandchildren who will always cherish her. Marjorie will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew her. We celebrate the day we will be reunited.

Graveside service and burial will be noon Monday at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with David Pollock officiating.

Friends may call 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens.

Pallbearers will be Joe Forren, Glenn Holz, Joey Forren, Joshua Forren, Benjamin Forren and Roger Evans.

Donations of sympathy may be made to Otsego Bible Chapel, c/o Mike Cook, P.O. Box 114, Mullens, WV 25882.

Ralph Lee Johnston

KINCAID — Ralph Lee Johnston, 46, of Kincaid, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Wriston.

Born June 18, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Wilburn and Betty McQueen Johnston Sr.

He was a retired laborer.

Ralph was loved by all his family and friends, and will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Sue Johnston; and brother-in-law, Jim Bill Foster.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Tolliver Johnston; two daughters, Tessa Marcelen Johnston of Huntington and Lavana Bigelow of Oak Hill; two stepsons, John Brooks and wife, Pam, of Pineville and Jonathan Brooks and wife, Rhonda, of McGraws; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Brooks and companion, James Settle, of Glen Rogers; two brothers, Wilburn Johnston Jr. and wife, Debra, of Kincaid and Johnny Johnston Sr. and wife, Wanda, of Kincaid; four sisters, Virginia Johnston and companion, Allen, of Kincaid, Anna Mae Reese and husband, Risty, of Kincaid, Reba Settle and husband, Rex, of Wriston and Tammy Foster of Robson; seven grandchildren, Zachary Dillard, Issac Brooks, Zoey Brooks, Alexis Settle, John Lee Brooks, Makyla Brooks and Brianna Rollins; and several aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Gary Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Louise Kessel

Virginia Louise Kessel, 91, of Beckley, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born April 16, 1915, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Fanny Perry Bailey.

Mrs. Kessel spent her childhood at Dehue in Logan County and she was a graduate of Logan High School. She settled in Beckley in 1950 and she was a resident of Locust Street for many years. She served as the clerk of Raleigh County in the 1960s and she retired from the Department of Highways where she worked as a secretary.

Mrs. Kessel was a member of First Baptist Church, Neville Street, Beckley, for over 50 years, where she was a member of the Fellowship Class and Lizzie Lewis Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair Eugene Kessel, on April 15, 1978.

Survivors include her son, William “Bill” Kessel and wife, Judy, of Beckley; their son, Andrew “Andy” Kessel; three sisters, Juanita Griffith of McConnell, Helen McClure of Barboursville and Billie McCormick of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nephews and nieces.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In memory of Louise, the family has requested donations of sympathy be made to Gideons International or to First Baptist Church.

Ina Mae Phelps Painter

ALDERSON — Ina Mae Phelps Painter, 71, of Muddy Creek Mountain, Alderson, died Friday, May 5, 2006.

A tribute to her life will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Lobban Funeral Home.

James E. Parsons

James E. Parsons, 71, of Beaver, died at his residence Thursday, May 4, 2006, following a short illness.

Born March 25, 1935, at Clarksburg, he was the son of the late Cecil Clyde and Goldie Florence Fraley Parsons.

Mr. Parsons retired from the West Virginia State Police with the rank of master sergeant. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Keith, William and Buddy Parsons; and a sister, Grace Ashcraft.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Ann Vines Parsons; a son, James E. Parsons Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Greensburg, Pa.; a daughter, Kathy Parsons of Clarksburg; a son, Mark Stephen Parsons and his wife, Karen, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren, Sheena, Marissa and Mitchell Parsons; great-grandchild, Logan Parsons; a sister, Reva YoNavyak of Clarksburg; and a brother, Lynn Parsons and his wife, Winifred, of Stonewood.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg, with the Rev. S.L. Green officiating. Burial will follow in Stonewall Park cemetery, Stonewood.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Victor Lee Stowers, 30, of Fireco, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2006.

Born Oct. 21, 1975, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Gary R. Stowers and Margaret Lucas Stowers of Hinton.

In addition to his father, a daughter, Ashley Stowers, a brother, James Stowers, paternal grandparents, James O. and Garnet E. Jennings, and maternal grandfather, George R. “Dink” Lucas, preceded Victor in death.

In addition to his mother, those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Justice Lee and Paul Elijah Stowers; a brother, Greg Stowers and wife, Rosie, of Beckley; same as brothers, William P. Stowers Jr., Richard Athel Stowers, Roger Allen Stowers Sr. and Roger Dean Stowers Jr.; sisters, Lucy Stowers of Glen Morgan and Loretta Stowers Hulgan and husband, Morris, of Bolt; three nephews, Stephen, George and Michael; eight nieces, Mary, Kayla, Dominique, Chastity, Savannah, Kristy, Whitney and Candice; maternal grandmother, Lucy Lucas; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins; fiancée, Jessica Lilly; and many, many friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Virginia St., Sophia. Burial will follow at Stowers-Jennings cemetery, Odd.

Friends may call 6 to 9 today at the funeral home.
