John Franklin Hindson IV

FAYETTEVILLE — John Franklin Hindson IV, 31, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center from injuries he received in a car accident and complications from many years of kidney disease.

Born Oct. 22, 1975, in Beckley, he was the loving son of J. Frank Hindson and Diane Carney Hindson of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John F. Hindson II.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Zane Thomas Hindson of Fayetteville; a sister, Lori Hindson of Fayetteville; a nephew, Damien Hunter of Fayetteville; and his grandparents, Emerson D. and Daisy Carney, and Ed and Verna Hindson O’Steen. John is also survived by aunts, uncles, other family and a host of friends who will miss him greatly.

John was a 1993 graduate of Fayetteville High School and played football for the Fayetteville Pirates. John was also an avid bowler and attended Mountain State University.

John’s passion was helping people. He gave of his time and energies from his heart to help make people’s lives easier.

He volunteered for the Salvation Army and Public Broadcasting System. He loved his job as a correctional officer at Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County.

John was a loving son, father, brother, grandson and friend to all who knew him.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel with the Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Donations of sympathy may be made to the Salvation Army, 312 S. Fayette St., Beckley, WV 25801, or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813.

Elder David Hiram Lilly

NIMITZ — Elder David Hiram Lilly, 81, of Nimitz, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Summers County ARH following a long illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1925, at Nimitz, he was the son of the late Tanner David and Virginia Bowling Lilly.

Having been a minister for more than 48 years, David was both a member and pastor of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church at Ghent and Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church in Webster County. He was retired from C&O Railroad. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, having fought in the South Pacific.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold F. Lilly.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Amma Jean Frazier Lilly; a daughter, Madonna Kay Gwinn and husband, Randal, of Pulaski, Va.; three sons, Gary David Lilly and wife, Renee, of Beckley, Gregory Scott Lilly of Nimitz and Elder Samuel Alan Lilly and wife, Patricia, of Vinton, Va.; a grandson, William Lilly and wife, Rebecca, of Beckley; three granddaughters, Candice Farrington and husband, the Rev. Phillip Farrington, of Beckley, Amanda Lilly of Roanoke, Va., and Tara Lilly of Vinton; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Lilly and Tracie Lilly, both of Beckley; a sister, Mary Garnet Stanley and husband, Eugene, of Nimitz; two brothers, the Rev. Thomas L. Lilly and wife, Loretta, of Greenville, N.C., and Leonard Lilly of Nimitz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Elzie Gwinn, Elder Leonard Brammer and the Rev. Thomas L. Lilly officiating. Interment will be in Lilly-Crews cemetery, Nimitz.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Frances Marie Lilly

Frances Marie Lilly, 88, of Crab Orchard, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at her residence of natural causes.

Larry Edward ‘Eddie’ Miller II

WINFIELD — Larry Edward “Eddie” Miller II, 24, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006.

Born March 26, 1982, in Beckley, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, Larry Dean Miller, and his great-grandmother, Dora Walker Clonch.

He was a deputy with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department as well as a police officer with the town of Winfield. Eddie was an active member of the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department as well as a sergeant with the United States Army Reserves. He attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church at Hurricane and was a 2001 graduate of Winfield High School.

Surviving are his parents, Ed and Selena Miller of Winfield; his fiancée, Lindsay Bonham of Winfield; brother, Matt Miller of Winfield; grandparents, Doug and Karen Walker of Mount Hope and Roger and Deanna Swadley of Griffithsville; great-grandparents, Ted and Macil Waddell of Beckley; aunts and uncles, Lt. Jeremy Walker, stationed with the United States Army at Fort Bragg, N.C., Stephen and Debra Pugh of Madisonville, Ky., Kim and Cecil Chaney of Madisonville, Greg and Christy Miller of Princeton, Ky., and Candy and Mike Hurd of Mount Hope; cousins McKenzie Miller of Greenville, Ky., and Kyle and Katy Hurd of Mount Hope.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, 3926 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, with the Dr. John D. Smith officiating. Burial with full honors will be in Winfield cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Association, P.O. Box 416, Winfield, WV 25213.

Louise Mandy Mullins

PINEVILLE — Louise Mandy Mullins, 89, who lived on Welch-Pineville Road, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006.

Born Jan. 27, 1917, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late James “Bud” and Eda Smith.

Mrs. Mullins was the former owner of Mullins Market, Cow Shed Motel and Mountain Motel. She was a member of Pineville Nazarene Church. She loved to be with family, work in her flowers and travel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estol Mullins; a son, Bailey Mullins; and several brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Harrison Estol Mullins and his wife, Betty, of Weatherford, Texas; three daughters, Sadie M. Gilley and her husband, Danny, of Martinsburg, Linda Sue McKinney and her husband, Buford, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Mattie Catherine Wyatt and her husband, Ray, of Brookwood, Ala.; a sister, Virgie Bland of New Richmond; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Princeton, with the Rev. Virginia Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville.

Opal V. Sexton

MEADOW BRIDGE — Opal V. Sexton, 80, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006.

Louise Shaffer

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, Louise Williams Vipperman Shaffer of Crab Orchard passed away in a Beckley care center following a short illness. She was 84 years of age.

Born Lilly Louise Williams on Dec. 11, 1921, at Warrior, Ala., she was the eldest of three daughters born to the late Byron O. and Velma Rylant Williams.

Louise spent her childhood at Princewick. A resident of Pontiac, Mich., for 30 years, she had resided on North Avenue in Crab Orchard since 1971. A member of Oak Grove Christian Church, she was formerly employed at the Sheltered Workshop in Crab Orchard. In her leisure time she loved to read.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W. Vipperman, and her husbands, Kyle Vipperman and Robert M. Shaffer.

She was the beloved mother of Nancy Carol McAfee and her husband, Earl, and her grandchildren, Pamela Mancusco and her husband, Don, Christine Ward and her husband, Vince, and Kent McAfee and five great-grandchildren, all of San Jose, Calif.; the dear stepmother of Robert Dale Shaffer and his wife, Lisa, of South Port, Fla.; two stepgrandchildren, Robbie and John Shaffer; and three stepgreat-grandchildren; loving sister to Charlotte Janney and her husband, Jack, and Mary E. “Libby” Senevey, all of Crab Orchard.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Mr. Kenneth Overdorf officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call noon until time of service Saturday. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Hugh ‘Bub’ Smith

CANVAS — Hugh “Bub” Smith, 76, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at White Funeral Home, Summersville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Anna Mae Spangler

LINDSIDE — Anna Mae Spangler, 88, formerly of Ormond Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea.

Born Aug. 1, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Clarence A. and Mable Broyles Ballard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester “Boots” Spangler; two sons, Jay and Don Spangler; a grandchild, Heather Spangler; a sister, Marilea O’Brien; and seven brothers, Buddy, Clinton, Tom, Jack, Glenn, Jim and Garnett Ballard.

She was a member of Ormond Beach Union Church.

Survivors include three sons, Leo and wife, Pat Spangler, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Joe and wife, Gayle Spangler, of Big Sandy, Texas, and Jan Spangler of Ormond Beach; a brother, Curtis and wife, Lou Ballard, of Lindside; two sisters, Catherine Dunn of Princeton and Susie and husband, Bob Wickline, of Lindside; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; special sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Ballard of Ormond Beach and Norma Ballard of Peterstown; and very special friend, Clara Spangler of Ormond Beach.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lindside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Mouser officiating. Burial will follow at Peterstown cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Wickline Funeral Home, Lindside, and one hour before service at the church.

Thelma Louise Sturgill

HAYS, N.C. — Mrs. Thelma Louise Adams Sturgill, 84, of Traphill Road, widow of Claudis Levi Sturgill, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center, North Wilkesboro, N.C.

Mrs. Sturgill was born May 23, 1922, in Washington County, Va., to Luther and Etta Gentry Adams. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Beulah Peak and husband, Robert, of Vermilion, Ohio, and Brenda Bales and husband, Barry, of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Claude L. Sturgill and wife, Susan, of North Wilkesboro and David E. Sturgill and wife, Sharon, of Pounding Mill, Va.; two sisters, Alma Wyatt of North Wilkesboro and Mildred Turner of Yadkinville, N.C.; a brother, John Adams of North Wilkesboro; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Service will be noon Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Reeves and the Rev. Jackie Richardson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Flint Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mr. Larry Wyatt, 221 Robinhood Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Thomas David ‘Dave’ Allport

OAK HILL — Thomas David “Dave” Allport, 79, of Oak Hill, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Jan. 16, 1927, at Hico, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Pearl Thomas Allport.

He retired from King Coal Chevrolet in Oak Hill with 40 years of service. Mr. Allport was a 50-year Mason.

A sister, Elizabeth Hankins, and a half brother, Vernon Coleman, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jean McAllister Allport; a daughter, Linda Holliday and husband, Richard “Doc,” of Oak Hill; his son, Eugene Allport and wife, Frances, of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Lida Coleman of Richwood and Jane Haga Harvey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a granddaughter, Mindy Allport-Settle of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandsons, Chris Allport and wife, Kathleen, of Richmond, Va., and Jared Allport of Washington, D.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Netta Allport of Richmond.

Visitation will be 2:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Ansted.

Graveside rites and committal service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the mausoleum with the Rev. David Sneed officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Thurman Goodman Sr.

BRUNO — Thurman Goodman Sr., 83, of Bruno, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bruno Church of God. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
