John C. Settle Sr.

John C. Settle Sr., 80, of Hurricane died Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Putnam General Hospital.

He was retired from Union Carbide Corporation, South Charleston. He was a member of the American Legion, Milton, and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Jr. and Kathy Settle of Chloe and James C. and Jennifer Settle of Hurricane; daughters and son-in-law, Jane and William Norris of Hurricane and Valerie Racer of Hurricane; sister, Jessie Alford of Hamlin; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Privates services were held. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Martha S. Sharrar

Martha Susan Hapney Sharrar, 57, of Scott Depot died January 20, 2005, at home after a long illness.

She was a homemaker and a member of Rocky Step Providence Baptist Church, Scott Depot.

Surviving: husband, Kenneth C. Sharrar; daughters, Liza Adams of South Charleston and Kathy Kent of St. Albans; stepdaughter, Crystal Sharrar of Sod; sons, Robert Hapney of St. Albans, Brian Saunders of Kingwood, Frank King of Nitro, and Mark Sharrar of Scott Depot; brother, Lee Smith of Michigan; 17 grandchildren.

Service was held Monday, January 24, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Robert Kelley officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley memorial Gardens, Winfield.

Jason Walker “Jake” Burdette

Jason Walker “Jake' Burdette, 25, of Huntington died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005. Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 25, 2005, in the Woodmere Abbey of Peace. He was born March 26, 1979, in Huntington, the son of Vickie Elza Collins of Huntington and Sam Burdette of Huntington. He is also survived by his stepfather, Jack Collins, and his maternal grandparents, Joe and Ruth Hanks of Huntington. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. He was a precious son and grandson who will be loved and missed forever.

Keith Allen Roach

Keith Allen Roach, 54, of Lesage, W.Va, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Keith was born on February 28,1950, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of John and Dorothy Carter Roach of Lesage, W.Va. He graduated from the Romney School for the Deaf. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Lee Roach. Additional survivors include his wife, Sondra Satterfield Roach; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Greg Pratt and Wendy and Roy Roberts, all of Lesage; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Alisha Roach of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Alison and Sarah Ross, Clay and Natalie Pratt, and Alyssa and Jennifer Roberts; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Don Knapp of Lesage; and a host of family and friends. Also “Uncle Keith” will be sadly missed by Kati. Funeral services were conducted and interpreted for the deaf at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Evangelist Ray Knapp and Pastor Fred Kitchen officiating. Interment followed at Greenbottom Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Uncle Corky, Uncle Bruce, Johnny Bruce Carter, Uncle Butch Surgeon, Bobby Stapleton, Roy Bellville and Everett Darling. Garry Lyle Grass

Garry Lyle Grass, caring husband to Marietta F. Grass of Milton, W.Va., was promoted to his Heavenly home Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at his residence. Funeral service were conducted Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Chuck Elkins and the Rev. Mark Finley officiating. Burial in Balls Gap Cemetery. He was born July 26, l935, in Lincoln County, West Virginia, a son of the late Lee Roy and Pansy Grass. In addition to Marietta, he was a loving father to son, Roy Todd (Carolyn) Grass of Barboursville; daughter, Karrie Beth (Jim) Fankhanel of Springboro, Ohio, and son, Troy Lyle (Misty) Grass of Barboursville; special grandfather to Kyle Thomas Daniel Colton, Bodie Lyle and Tye Robert Grass; Erin Beth and Emily Brooke Fankhanel. He was a close twin to Larry Dial (Frances) Grass and sisters, Helen Erwin and Opal Burton. Garry was an avid reader and faithful servant to God. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. He also attended Balls Gap Baptist Church. Garry retired from General Motors Acceptance Corporation to compassionately serve humanity from 1971-76 at the Charleston Union Mission. With his knowledge of accounting, God lead him to help relocate the new mission and build the chapel and elderly people's home located on South Park Road in Charleston, W.Va. He continued his work for the Lord during his employment as a Sales Representative with Ranson Stone and Marble and Barboursville Block Company.

A special thank you to Hospice caregivers, Brenda, Hope, Roma, Crystal, Natalie and John Schuman, as well as faithful friends, Arb, Claire, Jane and a host of wonderful friends and neighbors who were so supportive during his fight with cancer. Jeannine Gayle Porter Nichols, R.N.

Jeannine Gayle Porter Nichols, R.N., 65 of New Rochelle, N.Y., formerly of Salt Rock W.Va., died Jan. 7, 2005. Gayle was the daughter of Edith Nida Porter and the late Cline L. Porter of Salt Rock, W.Va. She graduated from Barboursville High School and Duke University. She worked for several years at the Duke University Hospital and later served as a civilian nurse at the U.S. Army Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. She retired from Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York. She is survived by her husband, Edward Nichols M.D.; two daughters, Christiana Nichols, M.D. of New York City, and Meredith Nichols of California; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Emil and Wanda Porter of Ona, Wayland and Patricia Porter, Michael and Sandy Porter, and Tony Porter of Salt Rock, W.Va., and 13 nieces and nephews. Memorial services were conducted Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Salt Rock United Methodist Church, Salt Rock W.Va., by Rev. Scott Ferguson and Rev. Ronnie Eplin. Lelia Eloise Winters Faulkner

Lelia Eloise Winters Faulkner, 82, of Culloden, WV, passed peacefully to her Lord after a long illness, January 18, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born May 22, 1922, in Huntington, daughter of the late Elbert and Ola Cooper Winters. Eloise was a lifelong resident of the area, was a 1939 graduate of Huntington High School, and was married April 24, 1942, to Marshall L. Faulkner. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Marshall; daughter, Brenda Robertson of Milton; a son-in-law, Reuben Robertson of Huntington; a son, Bruce C. Faulkner and his wife, Nancy, of Hurricane; five granchildren, Tyler Robertson of Lake Oswego, Ore., Holly Robertson Slayton and her husband, Dan, of Collierville, Tenn., Erin Bliss Robertson of Barboursville, W.Va., Adrianna Faulkner Muster and her husband, Will, of Calhoun, Ky., and Matthew Faulkner of Hurricane, and two special great-grandchildren, Caden Joseph Blake and Quinn Marshall Robertson of Barboursville, W.Va. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Jean Winters Meadows and her husband, Roy, of Lesage; a nephew, James B. Harbour of Houston, Texas ; three nieces, Sherre Harbour Chapman of Houston, Texas , Kathy Meadows Webb and Lisa Meadows Reynolds both of Lesage, W.Va.; and a sister-in-law, Helen Faulkner Winters of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her sister, Mildred Lucille Winters Harbour and her husband, James A. Harbour, preceded her in death. Eloise was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who devoted her life to enriching her family, leaving them with special comfort and memories.

She was a 40-year member of Highlawn Baptist Church, where she enjoyed her friends in the Koinonia Class and the Sanctuary Choir. For many years, Eloise and Marshall traveled extensively with the Kanawha Valley Ramblers RV Club. Eloise left the world a little brighter with her beautiful paintings, strong soprano voice and the sweet, sweet spirit of her soul. Eloise and her family were blessed with loving care provided by D.J. Maynard, Andria Pannell, Sherry Phillips, Janice Clark, Kathlee Miller, Maxine Holstein and Hospice of Huntington. Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, 2005 at Beard Mortuary in Huntington with the Rev. Paul Meadows officiating. Interment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park.

Virginia I. Roach

Virginia I. Roach, 81, of Lesage, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 18, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, 2005 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Ray Knapp and the Rev. Fred Kitchen officiating. Burial in Caldwell Cemetery, Lesage. She was born March 4, 1923 in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Edgar and Donna Scarberry Pinkerman. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Joe and Randy Eugene Roach and one sister, Vada Benedict. She was a member of the Barboursville Apostolic Church. She is survived by her husband, Carl Roach; one son, Carl Roach Jr. and his wife, Sharon; two sisters, Faye Long of Barboursville and Katie Kenney of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Alva Pinkerman of Lesage and Delano Pinkerman of Chiser, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Allen Shank

Harold Allen Shank, 45, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005. Funeral service were conducted Friday, January 21, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Larry Bailey and Tommy Bloss. Burial in the Bloss Cemetery at Lavalette. He was born March 6, 1959, in Huntington a son of Ernest and Nettie Bloss Shank of Barboursville. Also surviving are one daughter, Crissy Williams and two grandchildren, Brandon Leiper and Isaac Williams, all of Chesapeake, Ohio; three sisters, Anna Lee Hagenberger, Jenia Adkins and Pamela Bailey; one brother, Dennis Shanks and Allen's companion, Marlene Ardier of Huntington; several nieces and nephews, and cousins.

William Ray Simmons Jr.

William Ray Simmons, Jr., 57, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 20, 2005 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Timothy A. Jones, the Rev. William S. Simmons, and the Rev. Robert E. Simmons. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born September 27, 1947 in Gallaghar, WV, a son of William Ray Simmons Sr. of West Palm Beach, Fla., and the late Leona Jennings Simmons. He was a veteran of U.S. Navy. Survivors include four daughters, Lisa Dye Simmons of Parkersburg, Angie Simmons of Huntington, Mary Simmons and Martha Simmons both of Melbourne, Fla.; two sons, Shawn Simmons of Wellston, Ohio and Eric Simmons, Chillicothe, Ohio; one sister, Mary Mills of Eleanor, WV; six grandchildren; two nieces, Robin Mills and Rachel Martin; one nephew, Ryan Martin; and two former wives, Marilyn Simmons Dodd of Parkersburg and Sharon Wood of Melbourne, Fla. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. He was a man with a golden heart, who is now walking along the streets of gold; He is gone from our presence but not from our hearts.

Richard Joseph Watts

Richard Joseph Watts, 51, of Huntington, passed away Monday, January 17, 2005, at his home. He was born March 31, 1953, in Kanawha County, West Virginia, the oldest son of Robert J. and Ruth E. Watts of Huntington. He was a self-employed auto-body technician, and he attended the Prichard Church of God. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard Scott (stationed in Iraq with the Army, Unit 463 Charlie Company) and his wife, Amanda (Spence), Brian Stephen (who served in the Marine Corps) and Erin Stapleton of Huntington; one brother Michael A. and his wife, Vickie; one sister, V. Gail Whitley, and her husband, Terry; five nephews and four nieces, Michael Joe and Jessica, Christopher and Samantha Watts and Phillip and Erica, and Tim, Rob and Jaclyn Whitley. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 21, 2005 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Fred Ferguson. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

William J. Blake

William J. Blake, 76, died on January 9, 2005 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the beloved husband of Genevieve (Stover); loving father of Wayne (Karin) Blake. Devoted grandfather of Jesse (Katie) and great grandfather of Logan. He is the loving son of Lucy Blake (Casto) and the late Rev. James F. Blake. Verl Clagg, 73, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Monday, January 17, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Lue Wroten officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. He was born July 30, 1931 in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Laban and Eva Clagg. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton Clagg and Billy Clagg. He worked for Ross Sawmill, and was a member of Cremeans Chapel Church. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Ferguson of Milton, Leona “Annie” Christian, with whom he made his home of Lesage and Dolly Mae Walls of Lesage; three brothers, Claude “Tom” Clagg and Earl Clagg both of Lesage, and James Clagg of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Lelia Eloise Faulkner, 82, of Culloden wife of Marshall Faulkner, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 21, 2005 at Beard Mortuary, Huntington; burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.

Bertha Louise Lunsford, 89, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 17, 2005, in Sunbridge Care and Rehab of Putnam. Funeral services were January 20, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. She was born September 6, 1915, Cabell County, West Virginia, daughter of the late Clark and Alma Ball Neal. She was also preceded death by her husband, Clovis Lunsford, and one son Gail Lunsford. Helen Mae Cremeans, 87, of Culloden, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Monday, January 17, 2005. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jackie Walker. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born June 5, 1917, in Omar, W.Va., a daughter of the late William Anson and Ollie Ethel Beckett Ross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Troy Cremeans; one grandson, Mark Cremeans; and three brothers, John, Jim and Lee Ross. She attended Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Sayre of Culloden; one son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Carolyn Woodard Cremeans of Culloden; one grandson, Jay Sayre; and one granddaughter, Charity Cole and her husband James. Betty Joan Chinn Sawyers

Betty Joan Chinn Sawyers, 66, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away in St. Mary's Medical Center Sunday, January 16, 2005. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. John Terry. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born on October 6, 1938, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Marvin T. and Edith Mae Wall Chinn. She retired from Corbin's and was Vice President of Service Electric, Inc. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Franklin S. Sawyers; three daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Michael Mealey of Chesapeake, Ohio, Karen and Rusty Johnson and Kelly and Lester Chaffin, all of Barboursville; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and William Tatum of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Judy and Gary Hicks of Salem, Ohio, Doralee and Charles Henry, Margaret and Larry Neace and Sherry and Ken Zimmerman, all of Huntington; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons and Brian Vickers.

Tony Lee Jeffrey, 49, of Huntington passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at I p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Minister Wayne Carter. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born June 23, 1955, in Huntington, a son of Thomas M. Jeffrey of Barboursville and the late Dorothy Duke Jeffrey. He was an employee of Bayer Corporation for 30 years. He retired from the West Virginia National Guard Reserves 1257th Transportation Division, was a member of Beverly Hills Church of Christ and a past member of the Barboursville Jaycees. He is also survived by his .wife, Loretta Miller Jeffrey; one daughter and son-in-law, Kirsten and David Budd of Huntington; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and Marty Merritt of Barboursville; brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Thomas J. and Mary Jeffrey of Salt Rock, two grandchildren, Austin and Ericka Budd; three nephews, Jason and John Jeffrey and Matthew Merritt; two nieces, Nicki Gross and Heather Merritt; father-in-law, Frank Miller of Ohio; stepfather-in-law, Ralph Hage of Barboursville; and brother-in-law, Ray Miller of Columbus, Ohio. by Rev Lloyd Mayes. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born October 7, 1947, in Logan, W.Va, a daughter of the late Drewie and Dorothy Allen Adkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Lucas. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Jeffrey Spurlock of Huntington and Janet and Michael Guinn of Scott Depot; one sister, Joyce Howard of Marmet, W.Va.; three brothers, James Adkins and Claude Adkins, both of Huntington, and Jessie Adkins of Wheeling; five grandchildren, Charles “Robby”, Terrence and Isaac Spurlock and Justin and Brittney Guinn. James Paul Ball

James Paul Ball, 63, of Huntington, passed away at his January 11, 2005 were conducted Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Bob Virginia. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born September 27, 1941, in Gallipolis, Ohio, a son of the late Samuel Richard Ball and Isabell Vanden Ball Adkins. He was preceded in death by one brother, David Ball. He was a retired employee of the Cabell County Board of Education with 27 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay Ball; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jamie and Mary Ball of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jeffery and Angela Ball of Barboursville; one sister, Janice Nenni of Findlay, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Anna and Jacob.

Linda Ellen “Genie” Bills

Linda Ellen “Genie” Bills, 46, of Huntington peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel with the Rev. James Gilkerson officiating. Burial in Gill Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born April 1, 1958, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late John and Margaret Gill Bills. She is survived by three brothers and two sisters-in-law, John and Cindy Bills, Roger Bills and James and Tina Bills. She also leaves behind seven nieces and nephews she dearly loved, David, Noah, Amy, Christy, James, Joshua “Caleb” and Matthew Bills; four step-nephews, several aunts, uncles, a host of cousins and a special little buddy, J.D. A special thanks to Timothy and Mollie Maynard for their loving care.

Virgil H. Wetherholt

On Tuesday, January 11, 2005, Virgil H. Wetherholt quietly slipped away at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was a resident of Milton, WV, all of his 90 plus years. Virgil was born January 14, 1914, on the farm where he lived most of his life. He was the son of the Rev. Lemuel Bert and Lola Bell Carter Wetherholt. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Joy Mannon, his parents and 12 brothers and sisters. Virgil was the last of his siblings to join their parents in their heavenly home. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Caldwell Wetherholt; a daughter, Gail of Milton; and a son, Virgil Gary and his wife, Shelley, of Ashland, Ky. He had loved and been loved by his nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren that will miss him very much. There are numerous nieces, nephews, and many old friends that will miss this very special man that we had the privilege of calling Dad. Virgil retired from Gould Battery and Kinney Shoes. He and his father had owned the L.B. Wetherholt and Son Dairy for many years. He spent many years singing in gospel quartets and as choir director at Susannah Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 14, 2005, at Susannah Baptist Church by Pastor Paul Meadows. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. Patricia Carter

Patricia Carter, 69 of Barboursville, W.Va., died Friday, January 7, 2005, in Kettering Memorial Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, after a short illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Sue Jarrett officiating. Burial in Montgomery Memorial Park, W.Va. She was born June 2, 1935, in Fayetteville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Samuel Saunders and Freda Platte Reaney. She retired from the Cabell County Board of Education after a remarkable career as a teacher for terminally and seriously ill children, a homebound teacher and a Crisis Intervention Specialist for children. She was a nationally certified Counselor. She was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. Pat was also the owner of Two Old Crows Antique Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Dr. Joe Carter, and her longtime companion, Donald Kelly. She is survived by two sons, Kenny Carter and Kelli Phelps of Barboursville and Chris Carter and his wife, Pam, of Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Lauren Carter of Dayton and Blake Carter of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; a stepdaughter, Susan Kelly of Boynton Beach, Fla.; several cousins and a host of friends. Beard Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Jasper Paul Ferguson

Jasper Paul Ferguson, 51, of Barboursville, died January 6, 2005 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 12, 2005, with burial in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Va. Arrangements by Henson Mortuary.

Gladys Ruth Neil

Gladys Ruth Neil, 85, of Barboursville, widow of Jesse Neil died Sunday, January 9, 2005 in Heartland of Riverview, South Point, Ohio. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 12, 2005 in Evans Funeral Home, Chapmanville; burial Thursday, January 13, 2005 in Highland Memory Gardens, Godby.
