Stephen Wayne Hawkins

Stephen Wayne Hawkins, age 53, of Glen Jean, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born at McAlpin, on Nov. 24, 1953, he was the son of the late Jake and Stella Blevins Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins was a steel fabricator.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Ransom; and a niece, Holly Jo Hawkins.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Prince Hawkins; two sons, Scott Miller of Odd, and Dakota Hawkins at home; three daughters, Jennifer Hawkins of Beckley, Tonya Thomas of Jefferson, Ohio, and Angela Mitchem of Bristol, Va.; two brothers, Ben Hawkins of Sophia, and Joe Hawkins of Parkersburg; five sisters, Mary McCarthy of Bromall, Pa., Jean Resnick of Oviedo, Fla., Charlene Deweese of Chicago, Ill., Beverly Piper of Central City, Ky. and Fonda England of Mullens; best friends and nephews, Greg Miller of Orlando, Fla. and Jeff Hawkins of Beckley.

Special thanks to Dr. Jafary, Dr. Sahadevan, Dr. Amjad, the Dag Hammarskjold Cancer Center, and the BARH staff.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Hawkins body will be cremated and there will be no services. A private memorial will be held in the spring.

Fred G. Lilly

On Sunday, January 21st, 2007 Fred G. Lilly of MacArthur passed way at his home surrounded by his family after a short illness. He was 75 years of age.

Born May 31st, 1931 at Mabscott, he was the son of the late Fred G. and Nancy Ingram Lilly Sr.

Mr. Lilly was retired from the Coca-Cola Bottling Company after 39 years of service. Fred was the owner and operator of Lilly’s Repair service. He was charter member of the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Lions Club. Fred was a great fan of NASCAR.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister.

Fred was the loving husband of Uthalee Bragg Lilly; the beloved father of Fred G. Lilly III and his wife Debby of Jonesborough, Tenn.; Carolyn Mouser and her husband Gary of Germantown, N.C.; the dear grandfather of Corey and Casey Lilly and Gary Mouser’s son and daughter Matthew and Melissa of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, John Lilly and his wife Mary of Knoxville, Tenn.; and Dayton M. Lilly of Beckley.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 3 pm at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Bill Withers assisted by Rev. Phil Shields. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm today and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jack G. Lytton

On Saturday, January 20th, 2007 Jack G. Lytton of Mooresville, North Carolina, formerly of Beckley died at the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center following a long illness. He was 72 years of age.

Born Jack Garland Lytton on November 12th, 1934 at Tams he was the son of the late William Earcel and Thelma Ruth Hancock Lytton.

Jack spent his childhood at Tams and in Beckley. A graduate of Mark Twain High School, he was the former owner of Mountain State Collision. A former resident of Stanaford Acres, Jack has resided in Mooresville the past seven years. In his leisure time he collected toy trucks, police badges and pins. While living in Beckley he was very active in Crime Stoppers. In later years he had become a big fan of NASCAR. Jack will be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Ann Calvert.

He was the loving husband of Beverly Jo Alley Lytton the past 37 years; the father of Greg Lytton and his wife Valerie and Scott Lytton and his wife Michelle all of Beckley and Robert Lytton and his wife Jennifer of Mooresville; the grandfather of Cassie and Drew of Beckley and Coty, Carson, and Chloe all of Mooresville; the brother of William Earcel Lytton Jr. of Charleston.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel at Beckley.

Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may from noon until the time of the service.

Bryan Ross Martin

Bryan Ross Martin, 69, of Riverside Rest, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007, at the Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea, W.Va., following a long illness.

Ross was born March 18, 1937, in Beckley, and was the son of the late John C. (Jack) Martin and Helen V. Martin.

He graduated from Sophia High School, where he played clarinet in the high school band and acquired his love of music. He served on active duty in the U. S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He also worked as a reporter for the Post Herald/Raleigh Register. He worked in the banking and investment industry in both New York and Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Security Dealers. He graduated, with honors from Beckley College in 1969 and was an avid supporter of the WVU football team.

Ross last worked at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, West Virginia as the supervisor of Security and Maintenance and served on the Council of Classified Staff and Higher Education Board of Trustees.

Ross is survived by his former wife, and friend Jannie Davis Martin of Milford, Del.; his daughter Monica Michelle Parisi and her husband Mark of Milford, Del.; his granddaughter Monica Starr Biener of Milwaukee, Wis.; and his brother Darrell Wayne Martin and his wife Charla of Sophia.

At his request no visitation or services will be held.

Special thanks are given for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Boxwell and the staff of the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and Dr. Warger and staff of the Greenbrier Manor, as well as friends and co-workers who called and visited during his illness.

Genevieve Gunter Reed

BARBOURSVILLE — Genevieve Gunter Reed, formerly of Crab Orchard, passed away Jan. 17, 2007, at Hospice House of Huntington after a short illness.

Born Dec. 9, 1927, at Stotesbury, daughter of the late Virgel and Carrie Clay Gunter of Crab Orchard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Reed Sr. of 55 years; a brother, Virgel Gunter Jr. of Portsmouth, Va.; a sister, Zelma Easley of Roanoke, Va.

Mrs. Reed was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, she earned her degree of Hair Design at Beauty Academy of Roanoke, Va.

Her hobbies included flower gardening, and spending time with her loving family. Church was an important part of her life. In 1940 while at Crab Orchard Baptist Church, she was a member of a quartet with Senator Robert C. Byrd, her sister, Geraldine Gunter Sigmund and Mason Lilly. In Barboursville she was a member of Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Archie Reed Jr. and wife, Brenda; a daughter, Kimberly and her husband, Jason Krantz; two sisters, Ferne Edmonds of Halifax, Va., Geraldine Gunter Sigmond of Beckley; four grandchildren, Melissa and Travis Reed, Alaina and Garret Krantz, all of Barboursville; nieces, Kathy Edmonds of Halifax, Va., Linda Word of Portsmouth, Va., Becky Sigmund of Roswell, Ga. and Cynthia Rogers of Waynesboro, Va.; nephews, Wayne Gunter of Winston Salem, N.C., and William Sigmund II, MD of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church in Barboursville with Pastor Jeff Sizemore presiding. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Pallbearers were Archie Reed Jr., son; Travis Reed, grandson; Jason Krantz, son-in-law and Wayne Gunter, nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 910, Barboursville, W.Va. 25504 or Hospice House of Huntington, 3100 Staunton Rd., Huntington, W.Va. 25702.

Vera Mae ‘Toots’ Shaffer

GILBOA — Vera Mae “Toots” Shaffer, 75, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at funeral chapel.

Bersheba Vance Sheppard

MARIANNA — Bersheba Vance Sheppard, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.

Service will be noon Wednesday at 21 Holden Memorial Free Will Baptist Church, Holden. Friends may call 6 p.m. today at the church.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Sheppard family.

John Dennis Adams

QUINWOOD — John Dennis Adams, 73, of Quinwood, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at his home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., after a long illness.

Born April 10, 1933, Dennis was the son of the late Willie D. and Ottie T. Adams.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Miller); three brothers, John Darrell, Lemuel “Bill” and Glenn; and a sister, Mary Thomas.

Those left to cherish his loving memory include his daughter, Jeanette and her husband, Terry Loudermilk, of Florence, S.C.; a son, Richard and his wife, Sandy Adams, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; and a brother, Robert Adams and wife, Paulette, of Rainelle. Dennis had three grandchildren, Dodie Callison and husband, Jimmy, of Acworth, Ga., Cindy DeBerry and husband, James, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Jason Dennis Adams of Washington. Dennis also had four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Nathaniel Callison, and Skye DeBerry; and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis was a retired coal miner and owner/operator of Adams Trucking Co. He was employed in the coal industry for 37 years, during which he worked for Donagan, Island Creek and Leckie Smokeless Coal Co. (Local 1698). He and his wife, Doris, enjoyed the later part of their lives “wintering” in Florida. They often spent their summers in their home in Green Valley. Most of all, Dennis enjoyed spending time at his camp located on the Greenbrier River in Renick.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle. Pastor Mike Tincher will be officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Orient Hill Baptist Church.

Gerald V. Adkins

JUDSON — Gerald V. Adkins, 78, died at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 7, 1929, at Glade, he was the son of the late William B. and Manilla Reed Adkins.

Gerald was a former mail carrier and was retired as a school bus driver for the Summers County Board of Education. He retired at 66 with 22 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted father and grandfather. He loved to farm and hunt and was a hard worker. He had lived all of his life in Summers County.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Magnolia Burchfield Adkins; three brothers, Oliver, Lewis and Carl Adkins; and a sister, Carabelle Edelin.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa Pat Adkins; three sons, Ron and Jim Adkins, both of Judson, and Roger Baker and wife, Alice, of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Connie Blankenship and husband, Maynard, of Hix; a stepdaughter, Donna Jennings and husband, Billy, of High Point, N.C.; a sister, Phyllis Richmond and husband, Charles, of Alderson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Andy Howdock officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Knob Baptist Church cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chuckie Gore and Bo McCartney, William Richmond, Larry Grimmett, David Adkins, Rick Fox and Junior Merrill.

Velma I. Fridley Atkins

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — Velma I. Fridley Atkins, 85, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.

Velma was a member of the West Jefferson VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Hilliard American Legion and Moose Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Velma M. (William) Allen of Huntingtown, Md., and Nancy S. Niday of Oak Hill; and two sons Kenneth W. (Becky) Fridley of Columbus, Ohio, and Herman M. (Beverly Gordon) Fridley of West Jefferson.

Service will be noon Thursday at Rader-McDonald Funeral Home, West Jefferson.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home.
