Alma Collins Williams

LURAY, Va. — Alma Lee Collins Williams, 76, formerly of Warrenton, Va., and Beckley, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in a Virginia hospital following a long illness.

Born Dec. 30, 1930, at Dry Creek, she was the daughter of the late William and Dicey Jane Price Collins.

Mrs. Williams spent her childhood in Rock Creek. After marrying Teddy W. Williams, she lived in the Beckley area for many years, raising their three sons. Several years after her husband’s death, she moved to Warrenton, Va., to be near her sons and families.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, June Collins of Rock Creek and David Collins, of Cleveland, Ohio.

Survivors include three sons, Steve Williams, Don Williams and Jerry Williams, along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of the Warrenton area; a sister, Carol of Dorothy; a brother, Franklin of Grafton, Ohio; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Alma’s nephew, the Rev. Gary Williams, officiating. Burial will follow in Collins cemetery, Rock Creek.

Friends may call 2 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Margie F. Rogers Smith

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — Margie F. Rogers Smith, 84, formerly of Oak Hill, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the home of her daughter, Delores Grzincic, following an extended illness.

Born on May 3, 1922, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Cordia Cobb Rogers.

Mrs. Smith was a retired attendant at Hawthorne State Hospital.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Smith; one son, Donald Smith; and several sisters and brothers.

Left to cherish her memory include her son, Arthur Smith, Sr. and his wife, Ida of Streetsboro, Ohio; two daughters, Nancy Oliver and her husband, Jim of Nashville, Tenn., and Delores Grzincic and her husband, Robert of Middlefield, Ohio; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Atkinson of Summerlee, and Juanita Brinkman of Euclid, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at the funeral home.

Venna S. Young

PETERSTOWN — Venna S. Young, 86, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at Springfield Comprehensive Care Center, Lindside.

Born May 30, 1919 at Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Hutch and Demmie Barton Sims.

Venna was a homemaker, a member of Peterstown Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Kathleen Hamm Ladies Circle, and a charter member of the Adult Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Peters Valley AARP Chapter No. 1633, a member of the Lindside Senior Choir, and was an original member of the Southern Monroe Extension Homemakers Club.

In addition to her parents, Venna was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace R. “Doc” Young, and two brothers, Fin and Charles Sims.

Survivors include a daughter, Alicia Coulter and husband, Bobby, and a granddaughter, Cinda Coulter, all of Lindside; her sister-in-law, Myrtle Simms of Peterstown,; caregiver, Janice Gill, and some very special friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Rev. Carl Mouser and Rev. Jonathan Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Roles Chapel cemetery, Forest Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice, 540 N. Jefferson St., Box 7, Suite D, Lewisburg, WV 24901.

James E. Bailey

BALLARD — James E. Bailey, 57, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cashmere Baptist Church. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Olin D. ‘Tom’ Bostic

BATH, N.Y. — Olin D. “Tom” Bostic, 84, a native of Pickaway, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset View cemetery, Bozoo.

Tom O. Cales

HARDY, Va. — Tom O. Cales, 56, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005.

He was a well-known musician in the Roanoke Valley and all over. He was a member of Lake Drive Church of Christ.

Tom was a U.S. Army veteran and a master of many trades.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlow and Carrie Cales; and a brother, Reggie Cales.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Cales; a daughter, Asenath Cales; sons, James “Chester” Cales and Donnie Cales and wife, Katrina, all of Hinton; grandchildren, Laura “Nichole” Cales, Jesse Cales, Harlow Cales and Donnie Cales Jr.; brothers, Billy “Jack” Cales Sr. and Bobby “Joe” Cales of Hinton; nephews, Michael Cales, Bobby Cales, Billy “Jack” Cales Jr., Steve Cales, Albert Cales, Eric Cales, Mike Massey, Roger Massey, Christopher Gray and Anthony Gray; and nieces, Lori Northcutt, Bridgett Karlson, Carmen Cales, Susan Dawn Dickenson, Becky Keaton and Priscilla Massey.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Drive Church of Christ with Preacher Tommy Blewett officiating.

The family requests no flowers.

Ruth G. Chaffins

OCEANA — Ruth G. Chaffins, at the age of 82 years, six months and 12 days, departed this life Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, following a long illness.

Born April 6, 1923, in Pikeville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Ireland and Sherley Colegrove Gilliam.

Mrs. Chaffins was a homemaker. She married Glen Chaffins Sr. on June 29, 1940, and was baptized Aug. 23, 1946, in Coal Run, Ky. She had been a member of Delilah Methodist Church since 1955, where she sang in the choir, was a member of the United Methodist Women Society and served in different capacities of the church.

Ruth was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted Christian with profound faith in God and never said an unkind word about anyone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Chaffins Sr.; a son, Glenn Chaffins Jr.; a sister, Lucy Haley; and a brother, Arnold Gilliam.

Those left to cherish her memory are two grandsons, Kevin Chaffins and his wife, Sonja, of Oceana and Rich Chaffins and his wife, Misty, of Morgantown; a great-grandson, Nicholas Isaiah Chaffins; a brother and sister-in-law, Hallard Chaffins and his wife, Ruth, of Oceana; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Richard Chester officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Melvin Wendell Clark

RALEIGH, N.C. — Melvin Wendell Clark, 54, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Sept. 27, 1951, at Killarney, he was the son of the late James C. Clark Sr. and Clara Martin Clark.

Mr. Clark was a retired veteran. He was a member of the New Life Praise Center in Georgia and Glen White Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Violetta Clark and Mae Carter; and two brothers, James and John Clark.

Survivors include his children, Boyd W. Clark of Detroit, Mich., Melvennia Clark and Demond Edelen of Georgia, Clarice Bass and Shawn Bass of Raleigh, N.C., Tressa Grant of Beckley and stepdaughter Lynnette Totten of Beckley; a brother, William Clark and wife, Elva, of Beckley; and a sister, Pauline Clark Mullens and husband, John, of Leominster, Mass.

Service will be noon today at United Apostolic Faith Church with District Elder Tim Schofield officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Friends may call one hour before service today at the church.

Bonnie Alene Davis

Bonnie Alene Davis, 90, of Crab Orchard, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, following a long illness at the Raleigh Center.

Born on Sept. 9, 1915, in Pocahontas, Va., she was the daughter of the late Conley G. and Ora Swim Pierce.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a longtime volunteer at Virginia Medical Hospital. She was a longtime member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church and the Wednesday Morning Prayer Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John K. Davis; a daughter, Carolyn A. Davis; two brothers, Clarence G. Pierce and Billy S. Pierce; and a son-in-law, Allen Bonds Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Billie J. Bonds of Beckley and Barbara J. Clifton and her husband, Roy, of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Retha Peak of Beckley; four grandchildren, Cindy Parker and her husband, Gary, of Beckley, Kim Bonds of Charleston, Melissa Clifton and her fiancé, Eric Shepherd, of Vinton, Va., and Jonathan Clifton and his wife, Kristie, of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Patrick Parker of Beckley and Taylor, Jacob and Gracie Clifton, all of Roanoke; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Riffe, Les Haga, Steve Sturgill, James Bond, Ken Jennings and Dale Fitzpatrick.

Mary H. ‘Libby’ Ferrell Deitz

FAIRLEA — Mary H. “Libby” Ferrell Deitz, 75, died at her residence at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, following a long illness.

Born March 14, 1930, in Greenbrier County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Sidney Humphreys and Mary Gladys Smith Humphreys.

She attended Greenbrier County schools and was a graduate of Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte. She also was a graduate of Jefferson School of Commerce, and was a registered licensed practical nurse, having done private duty nursing in the area. She also was a sales clerk at the former Stone and Thomas Store, a member of the Lewisburg VFW Auxiliary and Fairlea Baptist Church.

She was a director of housekeeping at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center for a number of years and assistant director of housekeeping at The Greenbrier.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Ferrell; and a brother-in-law, T.R. Childers.

Survivors include her brothers and sisters, Margaret Louise Childers of Beckley, Dorothy Quick and husband, Paul, of Lewisburg, Charles Humphreys and wife, Terry, of Livermore, Calif., Ralph Edward Humphreys of Fairlea, Robert Humphries and wife, Judith, of Lewisburg, James Humphreys and wife, Linda, of Shreveport, La., and Jack Humphreys and wife, Alice, of Hinton; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Burial will follow in New Lebanon cemetery, Pickaway.

The family will receive friends noon until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice Inc., 203 S. Jefferson St., Suite A, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
