Josephine M. Hyer

RICHWOOD — Josephine M. Hyer, 97, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, in the Nicholas County Health Care Center, Richwood, after a long illness.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Richwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Mary Belviso Belletto; her husband, Harvey Hyer; a sister, Amelia “Mickey” D’Ambrosio; and a brother, Gene Belletto.

Survivors include a brother, Vincent Belletto and wife, Louise, of Richwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Father Jerome Rawa officiating. Burial will follow in Craigsville cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where a Rosary will be held at 7:45 p.m.

Albert Harold Lown

SCARBRO — Albert Harold Lown, 62, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Calvin Wade Martin

IRONTON, Ohio — Calvin Wade Martin, 45, formerly of Hinton, died Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 2005, at Kings Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Ky., following a sudden illness.

Leslie W. Phillips

Leslie W. Phillips, 73, of White Oak, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at the VAMC in Salem, Va., following a long illness.

Born at Spanishburg on March 21, 1932, he was the son of the late Lowell and Lina Adkins Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a retired small motor electrician and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He had made White Oak his home for over 45 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Phillips; a son, Leslie U. Phillips; and brothers, Willard and Otis Phillips.

Survivors include his sons, Michael B. Phillips and wife, Laura, of Cool Ridge, Mark A. Phillips and wife, Linda, of Cool Ridge and Brian K. Phillips and wife, Jackie, of White Oak; daughters, Karen Laxson and husband, Martin, of Oahlonega, Ga., Sharon L. Redden and husband, Billy, of Table Rock and Connie D. Gwynn and husband, Herman, of Woodbridge, Va.; brothers, Orville Phillips of Princeton, James “Pete” Phillips of Sparta, Mo., Fred Phillips of Elliston, Va., and Wilmer Phillips of Lewisburg; sisters, Geraldine Cooper of Flat Top, Nancy Lilly of Charleston and Sue Agee of Ghent; eight grandchildren, John “B.J.” Kincaid, Leslie Laxson, Mark W. Phillips, Stephen B. Phillips, Brian C. Phillips, Kevin J. Phillips, Brittany M. Phillips and Whittney L. Phillips; and three stepgrandchildren, Mechelle and Litisha Redden and Jeremiah Laxson.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. George Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Simmons cemetery, Mount View.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Leslie R. Laxson, John Kincaid, Mark W. Phillips, Stephen B. Phillips, Brian C. Phillips and Kevin J. Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronald Adkins, Martin Laxson, Herman L. Gwynn and Billy Redden.

Lois H. Scarbro

CENTREVILLE, Md. — Lois H. Scarbro, 80, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005.

Memorial graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Arbovale Annex cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Durbin United Methodist Church, Durbin, WV 26264.

Ruby Myers Stine

TUCSON, Ariz. — Ruby Myers Stine, 69, formerly of Webster County, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at White Funeral Home, Summersville. The family will receive friends one half hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Tissue Armstrong

CHARLESTON — Elizabeth “Betty” Tissue Armstrong, 87, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at her residence following a short illness.

Born Aug. 28, 1919, in Lynchburg, Va., Betty was the only child of the late Estelle Quarles and F. Quinby Smith. She came to Charleston at age 7 and attended public schools from 1927 to 1937, and later attended the former Morris Harvey College, Charleston, and graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

She married the late Benjamin D. Tissue in May 1947 and together moved to Beckley in 1950 and later moved to St. Albans in 1959, where she made her home for the next 43 years. After Benjamin passed away, Betty, in 1993, married the late Robert M. Armstrong and lived in Pensacola, Fla., for eight years.

Betty had been a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Charleston, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Beckley, and for the last 49 years had been a very involved member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in St. Albans, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Christ’s Kitchen, bazaar booths, Bible school and altar guild.

Betty is survived by her four children, Carol Tissue Smith of Raleigh, N.C., Benjamin D. Tissue Jr. of Warrenton, Va., Virginia Tissue Reinkopfs of Lewisburg and Robert S. Tissue of Lewisburg; and a grandchild, Justin P. Smith of Raleigh, N.C.

Committal service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. The procession to the cemetery will leave Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Ave., St. Albans, at 9:45 a.m. Following the committal service, at 11 a.m., a memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 405 B St., St. Albans, with the Rev. Rodgers Wood officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, the family welcomes all friends to a luncheon reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House c/o HospiceCare, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064, or to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Chapel Fund, 405 B St., St. Albans, WV 25177.

Patricia Durrett

Patricia Anne “Pat” Donahue Durrett of Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Beckley, died Dec. 5, 2006, in Oklahoma. She was 69 years of age.

Daniel Bruce Engelmeier

CLINTONVILLE — Daniel Bruce Engelmeier, 57, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at his home in Clintonville following a short illness.

Denver Dewey ‘Red’ Gunnoe

Dewey “Red” Gunnoe, 82, of Stickney, went to meet his God and reunite with the love of his life, Dorothy, on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. He died at home from a massive heart attack.

He was born Nov. 16, 1924, at Pine Knob in Raleigh County, the youngest child of Clifton and Martha Anne Morris Gunnoe.

Dewey was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Dean Gobble Gunnoe, in January 2007. His loss was immeasurable and our own grief now multiplied.

His only child, Martha Carper of Beckley, survives him. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Box Baxter of Whitesville, Timothy and wife, Laura Baxter, of Stafford, Va., and Joni and husband, Bill Weaver, of Clearwater, Fla.; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light in his eyes and heart. His great-grandchildren include Nicholas Carper of Clearwater and Eric, Shannon, Zachary, Madison, Jillian and Cade Baxter, all of Stafford.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of UMWA District 17, Local No. 8377. He worked in the mines for over 50 years.

He enjoyed tending his garden; no meal was complete without some of his tomatoes. In recent years he enjoyed sitting on his porch with Dorothy. He never knew a stranger and loved to laugh and retell stories from his youth.

Friends may call beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville. Brother Jim Farley will officiate the service at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

CLINTONVILLE — Elsie Corine Hinkle, 71, of Henson Road, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Greenbrier Avenue Church of God, Rainelle.

Melvin Judas Knight

MOUNT HOPE — Melvin Judas Knight, 84, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1923, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Ernest Knight of Kaymoor and Maude Elizabeth Calmond Knight of Winsor, Va.

Mr. Knight was a janitor at Mount Hope School, an orderly at Pinecrest Hospital and a construction worker. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Nettie Martin Knight; children, James Martin (wife Rose) of Baltimore, Md., Melvin Knight Jr. of Tennessee, Edward Knight, Tyrone Knight (Missy), Nettie Richardson (husband Paul), Paul Knight (wife Karen), and Maude Knight, all of Mount Hope, and Vincent Knight (special friend Elise) of Tennessee; two sisters, Dorothy Griffin and Ernestine Lawson, both of New York; 21 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and first cousin, Clara Holland of Xenia, Ohio.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley, with the Rev. Matthew Watts officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the funeral parlor.

Sons will serve as pallbearers.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Patricia B. Lewis

HINTON — Patricia B. Lewis, 59, of Stokes Drive, died at 11:17 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Ricky ‘Moe’ Martin

DANESE — Ricky “Moe” Martin, 41, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va., following a long illness.

Born March 9, 1966, at Hinton, he was the son of Judy Parker Martin and the late Bernard W. “Frog” Martin.

Moe worked for Southern West Virginia Paving Co. and had previously worked for Asplundh Tree Co.

Survivors include his wife, Delsie Campbell Martin; his mother, Judy Parker Martin of Danese; two daughters, Justine and Amy Martin, both at home; a son, Rodney Martin at home; three sisters, Tanya Martin of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tina and Chrissy Martin, both of Danese; a brother, Colby Martin at home; and a niece and nephew who helped care for him, Holly Gunnoe and Cody Kenney.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Martin cemetery, Crickmer, with Pastor Allen Whitt officiating.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

Pallbearers will be Robert Adkins, Jake Cox, Danny Critchley, Lee Critchley, Cody Kenney, and Tony Martin.
