Dan F. Armstrong & Norma F. Armstrong

Daniel Franklin Armstrong, 84, of Winfield died January 1, 2005, following a long illness. Norma Francis Miller Armstrong, his wife of 64 years, joined him on January 3, 2005, after a short illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong were lifelong Nazarenes and members of the Winfield Church of the Nazarene. They served the church in many ways with Mr. Armstrong as choir director and minister of music and Mrs. Armstrong as Missionary Society president.

He was a graduate of South Charleston High School. He was a supervisor for Union Carbide for 21 years and the founder of Chem Valley Machine, Inc., Nitro.

She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended Nazarene Bible College and West Virginia State College. She was a member of Mount Vernon Nazarene College Foundation Board.

They were preceded in death by a son, Gene Allen Armstrong; his parents, George and Lydia Armstrong of South Charleston; her parents, Samuel and Frona Miller of Charleston; his sister, Kathleen Childers of Kenova; his brother, Charles, formerly of Kanawha City; her brother, Samuel Miller Jr. of Charleston; and her foster sister, Vickie McDonald of Fontana, California.

Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, George and Merlene Armstrong of Winfield; granddaughters, Jennifer Stevens and husband, Tim, of Winfield and Emily Keefer of Winfield; grandson, Jeffrey Armstrong and wife, Stefanie, of Winfield; their beloved great-grandchildren, Nathan and Grace Embree, Nathan Stevens, Garrett and Abbey Keefer, and Parker Armstrong; sister, Neva Haynes of South Charleston; and loved nieces and nephews.

Services were held Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Winfield Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. John Hayes officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorials be made to the Winfield Church of the Nazarene, 2924 Winfield Road, Winfield WV 25213; or to Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064

Juanita Davis

Juanita Gibson Davis, 80, of Appleton City, Missouri, formerly of Hurricane, died December 10, 2004, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.W. “Bill” Davis, her parents, Oney and Myrtle Gibson; brother, Vernon, sister, Dorothy Qualls, and her foster brother, Paul Baylous.

Surviving: her sister Dorothy's children, Lionel Ward, Oneda Farhrner, Cathy Fraley, Regina Parsons, Teresa Rice, Randy Qualls, and James Neil; a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Forest Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum, Milton.

Alden S. Loudermilk

Alden S. Loudermilk, 76, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, formerly of Hurricane, died January 1, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington, following a short illness.

He was born January 5, 1928 in Rainelle, West Virginia, the son of the late Jesse A. and Noka Surbaugh Loudermilk. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary V. Welcher Loudermilk.

He was a retired truck driver for McLean Trucking for 35 years. He also was employed by Sunways Tour Lines, Surfside, South Carolina. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: daughter, Sheila Treadway of Hurricane; son, Jess “Jay” Loudermilk of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Libby A. Cobb and Stephanie J. Treadway of Murrells Inlet, Tiffany Loudermilk of Culloden, Robert Treadway Jr. and Nichole Carmichael of Hurricane; great-grandcauighter, Halie Dawn Nicole Loudermilk.

There was no service. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Mike Bailey

Jerry Mike Bailey, 42, of Hometown died January 5, 2005 in Thomas Memorial Hosopital.

Surviving: mother, Mrs. Friedricke Bailey of Hometown; brother, Gearry and wife, Melissa Bailey of Hometown; niece, Kayla; nephew, Cabel; aunts, uncles and a host of other family and friends.

Service was held Friday, January 7, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Dr. John Smith and Pastor Bruce Young officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Gretice Alice Scarberry

Gretice Alice Scarberry, 57, of Hurricane, formerly of Huntington, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at CAMC.

She was born March 3, 1947 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Frederick and Sarah Collins Burns. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Scarberry.

She was a member of the Sousanah Freewill Baptist Church and the Hurricane Senior Citizens.

Surviving: daughters, Paula Sayre and Debbie Racer and her husband, Adam, all of Hurricane; son, Irvin Scarberry and wife, Debbie, of South Charleston; grandchildren, Shawn, Anthony, Zackery and Treavor; sisters, Judy Glenn of Culloden and Mary Faulkner of Hurricane; brother, Herman Burns of Apple Grove.

Service was held Friday, January 7, 2005, at Thomas Memorial Freewill Baptist Church, Huntington, with the Rev. Junior Smith officiating. Burial was in Woodmere Memorial Park. Beard Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Louise F. Pickens

Louise F. Pickens, 87, of Eleanor, formerly of Leon, died January 6, 2005, at home.

She was a former employee of Fletcher Enamel, a homemaker and a Methodist, former member of Democratic Executive Board for 26 years, and a resident of Mason County all of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Buxton Pickens.

Surviving: daughters, Murl Louise Tribble of Leon, Janet Pearl Sargent of Grove City, Ohio, and Polly Sue Pickens of Eleanor; sister, Avis Quickle of Nitro.

Service was private. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Agnes B. Henderson

Agnes B. Henderson, 90, of Hurricane died January 7, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.

She was a member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Teays Valley Church Women United, Hurricane Woman's Club, Pilot Club for Charleston Business Women and the founding board for the Charleston Symphony.

She was retired from Thomas Field Wholesale Distributor with 28 years of service. She was active with the ministry of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Asa Henderson, parents, Fredrick F. and Sallie Burns, sister, Irene Hill, and brothers, Russell, Robert, Ray and Richard Burns.

Surviving: sisters, Opal Perez of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Frances Tibbets of Naples, Florida, and Gretna Michels of Kanawha City; brothers, Randall Burns of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Monday, January 10, 2005, at Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence E. Franklin

Lawrence E. “Red” Franklin, 81, of Winfield died January 7, 2005, at his home.

Born March 18, 1923 in Silverton, West Virginia, he was a son of the late John Earl and Hazel Franklin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Jane Franklin.

He was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston plant, with 37 years of service, and was a member of the Bee Keepers' Association.

Surviving: daughter, Carolyn Mandrake and her husband, Dick, of Ravenswood; sons, Jerry Franklin of Hamlin, William Franklin and his wife, Joellene, of Milton; sisters, Carol Staats of Ravenswood, Jessie Rucker of Cross Lanes and Faye Franklin of Silverton; brother, Clarence Franklin of Chicago; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield.

William H. Noffsinger

William H. “Bill” Noffsinger, 81, of Black Betsy died January 8, 2005, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was retired from Union Carbide, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Black Betsy Community Church.

Surviving: daughter, Dr. Susie Matulis and her husband, Dr. Steven Matulis of Charleston; stepsons, Chuck and wife, Lola Roberts of South Charleston and Joe and wife, Vicky Roberts of Bancroft; grandchildren, Dr. Melissa Matulis of Cramerton, North Carolina, Lisa Matulis of Charleston, and Shannon Matulis of Knoxville, Tennessee; great-grandson, Nicholas Cochran; step-grandchildren, Brittney, Heather, Shelly and Jonah Roberts.

Service was Friday, January 14, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Larry Covert officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Mary Ann Yoho

Mary Ann Yoho, 76, of Ona died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Blue Sulphur Cemetery. Mary was born May 1, 1928, a daughter of the late Baxter and Thelma Kline Barbour. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dale Clinton Yoho and one sister, Wilma Jean Brinager. She was a member of Beulah Ann Baptist Church. She was also past president and past vice president of the West Virginia Dental Assistant Association. Mary is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Theresa and George Shy, Jane and David Terry and Jeanne Megahan; five grandchildren, James Shy, Stephan Shy, Cris Jones and husband Greg, Clint Terry and wife Christina and Brian Downey; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Sanford, Matthew Jones, Kaitlyn Terry and Kierston Terry; two nieces, Connie Erickson and Betty Martin; and two caregivers, Mary Carter Kessler and Sharon Pillowchowski.

Walter Wade “ Butch” Byrd

Walter Wade “Butch” Byrd, 52, of Huntington died Monday, January 3, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Charles Vance. He was born September 27, 1952, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Clyde and Amalee Hutchison Byrd. He is survived by his wife, Tamara Banks Byrd; two sons, Jeremy Michael Byrd and Noah Scott Byrd; and one stepson, Jamie Darin Banks, all of Huntington; three sisters, Betty Martin of Florida, Doris James of Huntington and Mary Ross of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Charles Byrd of Barboursville; three grandchildren, Jeremy Tyler, Savannah Nicole and Zachary Scott, and one step granddaughter, Stevie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Walter W. Byrd Memorial Fund, PO. Box 295, Barboursville, WV 25504.

George L. Carter

George L. Carter, 61, of Lesage, WV, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor George Surgeon and Pastor Jamie Jefferson officiating. Burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Eugene Finley, Roy Belville, James “J.R.” Roberts, Kevin Carter, Clyde Carter and Clifford Maynard. He was born January 16,1943, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of Josie Irene Fife Carter of Lesage, W.Va. and the late Corbett D. Carter. He was also preceded on death by a sister, Rose Marie Carter. He retired from ACF Industries and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Era. He was a member of VFW Post #1064, whose members conducted military graveside rites. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Vanita, whom he loved very much; a son, George Leslie Carter of Florida; a stepdaughter, Samantha Ervin of Lesage; a stepson, Leonard Kipp of Huntington; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Mildred Darling, Dorothy and John Roach of Lesage, Bernice and James Scott of Huntington, Evelyn and George Surgeon of Glenwood, and Sharon and Jack Brayton of Tennessee; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Corbett and Virginia Carter of Lesage, William and Delma Carter of Salt Rock, W.Va., Steve and Debbie Carter and John B. and Connie Carter, all of Huntington; many nieces and nephews who will miss their “Uncle George's” whistle as well as a host of friends who will miss his laughter and kindness. He will also be sadly mussed by two “sons”, Lance Wave of Florida and Andrew Ervin of Huntington.

Dale Richard Stevens

Dale Richard Stevens, 75, of Barboursville went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 2, 2005. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Larry Greene. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born September 17, 1929, in Harrisburg, Pa., a son of the late Martin and Katherine Nye Stevens. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the River Cities Community Church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carla Mace; three brothers, Kenny Stevens, Wesley Stevens and Robert Stevens; and one sister, Martha. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bomgardner Stevens; one daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Dan Bickerton of Huntington; two sons, Mark Richard Stevens and Yvonne Hilmer of Middletown, Pa., and Michael Eric Stevens and Sandy Hughes of Harrisburg, Pa.; one sister, Erma Bennish of Harrisburg, Pa.; three brothers, Donald, Earl and Ralph Stevens of Harrisburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren and special friend, Chris Malave. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, P.O. Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709.

Forney E. Adkins

Forney E. Adkins, 79, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Heron Adkins and Garland Perry. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was born September 6, 1925, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Audie and Alice Leep Adkins and the stepson of the late Reba Adkins. He was a decorated veteran of World War II with the Army's 329th Infantry Regiment and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a retired employee of White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was preceded in death by his loving partner, Myrtle Louise Adkins, an infant son and a special son-in-law, Mervin “Buddy” Johnson. He is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Wanda and Charles “Sambo” Adkins of East Lynn, Judy Johnson of Wayne, Donna and Dwain Sloane of Huntington, Retha and Frank Sabado of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Diana Bonds of Aberdeen, Md. He also leaves behind seven loving grandchildren, Pamela Adkins of East Lynn, Dale and Jennifer Johnson of Kenova, W.Va., Eric Jenkins and Sherry Hite of Elkton, Va., Bobby Joe and Susan Adkins of Lavalette, W.Va., Kristi Johnson of Wayne and her fiance, Jon Jackson, of Barboursville, Joshua Sloane of Huntington and Linzie Bonds of Aberdeen, Md. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Adkins, Harlan Adkins, and Franklin Adkins. He is also preceded in death by three sisters, Zula Bryant, Berdie Porter and Jo Ann Adkins and one stepsister, Bernice Ferguson.

He is also survived by five stepsisters, Belvie Nicely, Alberta Adkins, Inez Adkins, Linda Dillman and Carolyn Adkins and three stepbrothers, Russell Adkins, Charlie Adkins and Audie Adkins Jr. He will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Homer Ellis McComas Jr.

Mr. Homer Ellis McComas Jr., 71, of Huntington, passed away at his winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla., Saturday, January 1, 2005. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, with the Rev. Dr. Reed Wood and Father Leon Alexander officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Homer was born August 1, 1933, in West Hamlin, W.Va., the son of the late Homer Ellis Sr., and Ruth Rousey, McComas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Cynthia Guinn McComas in 1994; and a brother, John Vanloe McComas. Survivors include his wife of five years, Patsy Ruth Carson Ray McComas; one daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Dean Brotherton of Milton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Karen McComas, Matthew and Robin McComas, Mark and Sara McComas, all of Barboursville; brothers, Glenn McComas of Huntington and Bethel McComas of Cartersville, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Angie and her husband, Jared, Christopher, Shawn, Jennifer, Katie, J.D., Scott, Shane, Kyle; one great-granddaughter, Rayen Ciccolella. He is also survived by Patsy's children and grandchildren, David and Teresa Ray, Mark Ray of Huntington, Mary Beth and Brian Vance of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Ryan, Jeremy, Bradley, Cory Ray, Hannah and Hunter Vance. Homer retired from CSX Transportation after 44 Years of service, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Barboursville, and Riviera Golf Club, where he will be deeply missed by his golfing friends. He was a graduate of Huntington East High School in 1951, an avid golfer and Marshall University sports fan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to diabetes.
