Violet K. Wright

PONTIAC, Mich. — Violet K. Wright, 94, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Oakland County Medical Care facility following a long illness.

Born Jan. 21, 1911, at Sun, she was the daughter of the late Robert Kessler and Frances Kessler.

Mrs. Wright was a beautician and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, church choir and the Kitchen Hospitality Committee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Jefferson Wright; and sisters, Myrtle Snow, Laura Traynham, Rose Dickerson, Evelyn Stokes, Dora Kessler and Losine Coleman.

Survivors include her son, Alfred J. Wright Jr. and wife, Gladys C. Wright, of Pontiac; a grandson, Robert D. Wright of Pontiac; great-granddaughter, Alana S. Wright of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Beatrice Eames of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 770 S. Fayette St., Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. David McDowell officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Thursday at the church.

Arrangements by Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Anita Acord Ash

DECATUR, Ga. — Anita Rene’ Acord Ash, loving mother and wife, 56, of Decatur, Ga., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005.

Mrs. Ash graduated from Trap Hill High School in Surveyor. She was married to Horace Ash. She was an outstanding and dedicated member of the Macedonia A.M.E. Church. She was also a faithful member of the stewardess board.

Her husband, Horace Ash, preceded her in death in May of this year, and she was the daughter of the late Roger Acord of Bolt.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Herbert Lewis Walker, Jr. of Decatur, Ga.; mother, Sara R. Tulloch, and stepfather, Ray Tulloch of Beckley; two brothers, Alan R. Acord and wife, Karen, of Glen Daniel and Timothy R. Acord and wife, Sherry, of Cross Lanes; a sister, Rebecca M. Birchfield and husband, Ed, of Glen Daniel; a stepbrother, Thomas C. Tulloch and companion, Cindy Horne, of Geneva, Ohio; and a stepsister, Laura T. Comer and husband, Chris, of Simi Valley, Calif.

We will all miss her loving touch, infectious laughter and her willingness to always lend a helping hand. She touched all of our hearts and will be truly missed.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. today at Melton Mortuary, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Burial will follow in the Allen cemetery in Bolt.

Melton Mortuary, Beckley is serving the family.

Mohawk ‘Peanut’ Bailey Jr.

FRANKFORD — Mohawk “Peanut” Bailey Jr., 51, died Oct. 13, 2005.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Arrangements by Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Katherine Hall Ballard Blake

Katherine Hall Ballard Blake, 56, of White Oak, died 10:52 p.m. Oct. 16, 2005, at her home following a long illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1949, at Crow, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Birt Hall and Minnie Wilburn Hall.

Mrs. Blake was a disabled LPN at Pinecrest Hospital.

She was a five-year resident of White Oak.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rhodes Ballard; and three brothers, Eugene, Frank and David Hall.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Blake at home; a daughter, Terry Honaker of White Oak; stepchildren, Shaun Blake and wife, Shella, of Beaver, and Vicki Kincaid and husband, Charles, of Shady Spring; brothers, Roy Hall of Ghent, James Hall of Daniels and Charles Hall and wife, Anna, of Beaver; sister, Rose Rash and husband, Phil, of Hudson, Fla.; and grandchildren, David, Crystal, Logan, Brianna, Jay, Crystal, Tonya and Tiffany.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Mark Pennington officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jerry Lee Collins

IAEGER — Jerry Lee Collins, 49, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005.

There will be no service, the body was cremated at Mr. Collins’ request.

Jerry’s ashes will be laid to rest beside his mother, in the Noah Justus cemetery, located at Bull Creek of Panther.

Arrangements by Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert, is in charge of arrangements.

Sgt. Matthew Scott Cooley

BECKWITH — Sgt. Matthew Scott Cooley, 22, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, from the results of an auto accident near his home at Beckwith.

Born July 25, 1983, at Beckley, he was the son of Myra A. Copley Cooley of Beckwith and Todd Alexander Cooley of Logan.

Matt graduated from Fayetteville High School and attended WV Tech at Montgomery. Later, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard, 201 Field Artillery Division, Elkins, spending 13 months in Iraq, and came home in March 2005. He just recently volunteered for duty in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.

He loved his family and friends, football and sports, composing his own music, and he was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, John Cooley; cousins, Benjamin and Jeffrey Mathews; and great-grandparents, Canterbury and Copley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Myra A. Copley Cooley of Beckwith; his father, Todd A. Cooley of Logan; two brothers, Todd P. Cooley and Michael R. Cooley, both of Beckwith; grandparents, Allie and Ruth Copley of Beckwith; aunts and uncles, Phillip and Annette Treadway of Ansted, Sue and Terry Kivett of Shadyside, Md., Jerri and Gene Mathews of Beckwith, and Donna and John Ramsey of Stevensville, Md.; and numerous other relatives.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, and again one hour before the service on Wednesday at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

Military rites will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard.

Beulah Elizabeth Edmonds

PARKERSBURG — Beulah Elizabeth Edmonds, 92, formerly of Shady Spring, passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005.

Born April 20, 1913, in Raleigh County, Ms. Edmonds was the daughter of the late Henry and V.J. Lilly.

She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and had previously attended Shady Spring Baptist Church and Crab Orchard Baptist Church.

She was past president of the Ladies Circle. Beulah graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1931 and enjoyed traveling and had visited all but seven states.

Ms. Edmonds was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Edmonds in 1994; and five brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include her son, William Edmonds of Parkersburg and his fiancé, Sheila Miller, of Boaz; four grandchildren, William Edmonds II of Pt. Pleasant, Debra Woodruff of Palm Coast, Fla., Judy Edmonds of Charleston and Lynn Rakin Edmonds of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Hartzel Lilly of Montgomery, Ala., and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley.

Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Dr., Beckley is serving the family.

Bessie Harper

COAL MOUNTAIN —Bessie Harper, 73, died Oct. 16, 2005.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Coal Mountain Freewill Baptist Church, Coal Mountain. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the church.

Arrangements by Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert.

George ‘Hutsy’ Asbury Jr.

George “Hutsy” Asbury, Jr, 52, of Coal City, passed away July 17, 2006.

Born June 16, 1954, at Beckley, he was the son of George and Ollie Brown Asbury of Soak Creek.

George was a retired construction worker with the Local #453 and was a member of the Harper Heights Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pamela Asbury; a daughter, Misti Asbury and husband, Brian Rakes, of Roanoke, VA; a son, Jeremy Asbury and wife, Sarah, of Sophia; four brothers, Buzzy Asbury of Montcom, Mark Asbury of Lester, Timmy Asbury of Midway and Gary Asbury of Maple Meadows; three sisters, Rita Basham of Maple Meadows, Lita Lyons of Lester and Zita Murdock of Sophia; three grandchildren, Joshua, Amber and Hailey; and many special nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Virginia Street, Sophia with the Rev. Mike Murdock officiating. Burial will follow in Lilly Family cemetery, Lester.

Friends may gather with the family 12 noon until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Alpha Clyde Bragg

TIOGA — Alpha Clyde Bragg, 90, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tioga House of Prayer, Tioga. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood.

Virginia Hurley Burgess

Virginia Hurley Burgess, of Crab Orchard, formerly a resident of Glen Fork for 31 years and a former resident of 116 Brown St. in Beckley, departed this life, Monday, July 17, 2006, at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 12 days, at her residence following a long illness.

Born Aug. 5, 1917, in Pikeville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late James C. and Mary Ford Hurley.

Mrs. Burgess was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jack Burgess; a son, James H. Burgess; a grandson, Thomas J. Day; a brother, Marvin Hurley; and a sister, Grathel Hornsby.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Jack D. Burgess and his wife, Sue, of Staunton, Va.; three daughters, Irene Boyd and her companion, Del Day, of Crab Orchard, Brenda Haga of Titusville, Fla., and Bonnie Burgess of Elkin, N.C.; a sister, Pauline Browning of Cape Coral, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

A special thank you to Hospice of Southern WV and her special caregivers, Cindy McLean, Olla Alexander and Linda Park, all of Elkin, N.C., and Betty McClanahan of Beckley.

A celebration of Mrs. Burgess’ life will be 1 p.m. today, July 20, 2006, at the Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gene Reid officiating. Burial will follow in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family will receive friends 11 a.m. until time of the service today at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to Hospice of Southern W.Va., P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25801-1472.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.
