Fred Nelson

On Saturday morning, Oct. 15, 2005, at about the same time that he would have otherwise been sitting in his rocker, having his cup of morning coffee, Fred Ernest Nelson slipped away to have coffee from now on on God’s porch. As he passed through his life, he passed similarly in death: quietly, gently, and with great dignity, surrounded and loved by those he treasured most in the world — his partner in love and life for 56 years, his wife, Ginny, his daughters who worshipped the ground that he walked upon, Margaret Nelson Fowler of Richmond, Va., Freda Nelson Crockett and her husband, Dr. Samuel Robert Crockett, III, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., his only grandchild, whom he adored, Misti Fowler Newsom and her husband Neil of Salem, and their two little children, Daniel Andrew Newsom and Emily Dale Newsom, who brought more joy and delight into his and Ginny’s life than nearly anything ever has.

Born Feb. 21, 1923, to Sophia Fannin Nelson and Roy Houston Nelson in Winona, he was brought to Quinwood as a young boy, where he was raised, built his family, and his businesses. He was the last living child of Roy and Sophia, having earlier lost his sisters, Gladys Nelson Neil Ray, Edith Nelson Pritt, and Charlotte Jean Nelson Lockhart.

As a young man, Fred enlisted in the Army during the early days of World War II. He fought with the U.S. Army’s 736th Medium Tank Battalion in the European Theater, where he earned the Bronze Star. Upon his return to Quinwood following his military discharge, he met and married Geneva Egnor of Rainelle. He also started his first business, Quinwood Taxi Service, operating it from 1948-1955. In early 1956, he bought a little service station, “out on the corner” in Quinwood, which became an institution known for great service, fair dealing, and a town bench in front of the place that was used by local residents to discuss and solve all of the world’s problems. He worked that station seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for 22 years. He sold in 1978.

During these years Fred was also one of a group of local business people who founded the First State Bank and Trust (now known as City National Bank) of Rainelle. He served on its Board of Directors for many years. After a year of attempted retirement, and being unable to sit still following a lifetime of hard work, he took the position as purchasing agent for John B. Harris Coal Company, a position he held for nine years before finally retiring in 1988. At that time, he and Ginny left Quinwood for Salem, Va., where he resided at the time of his death.

Because it was never out of his mind or his heart, his family will bring him home to his beloved West Virginia. The family would welcome friends to visit and share memories this evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle. Fred will be further remembered at services on Tuesday at 11 a.m., also at Wallace and Wallace. An esteemed friend, the Rev. Troy George, will lead us as we pause with friends to celebrate the gifts of strength, character, honesty, and profoundly felt love this gentle man gave to his life and to his family. Interment will be at the Wallace Memorial cemetery at Clintonville.

Fred’s family would encourage contributions to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choosing. We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude and unending thanks to Dr. Nelson Greene and the entire staff of the Lewis-Gale Hospital MICU for innumerable kindnesses, true professionalism, abundant compassion, and heroic skill during many crises over many years, most importantly on behalf of Fred, but, thankfully, also for us. God bless.

Arrangements by Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.
