Robert H. Dodd, M.D.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Robert H. Dodd, M.D., 81, formerly of Jumping Branch, died Oct. 5, 2005, after heroically battling colon cancer for five years.

Born Aug. 7, 1924, at Jumping Branch, he was the son of the late Frank J. and Iva Walker Dodd.

Robert credited both the strong work ethic of his parents and his mother’s unyielding faith in helping him to meet life’s challenges — challenges that included being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 13 and tuberculosis at age 20, a condition that led to a four-year stay at Pinecrest Sanitarium in Beckley.

He was an honor graduate with the Hinton High School Class of 1943 and was elected to the West Virginia Boys’ State Supreme Court. Robert graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. While at the university, he received the honor of being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity, the Phi Etta Sigma National Scholastic Fraternity and the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He received his medical degree from UVA in 1958.

Robert completed a rotating internship in internal medicine at the University of Texas in Galveston in 1959 and his four-year residency in Atlanta, Ga., by serving one year in internal medicine at Emory University and three years in radiology at Grady Memorial Hospital. While serving at Grady Memorial, Robert had the privilege to count the great baseball player Ty Cobb among his many patients.

Upon receiving certification as a radiologist, Robert moved his young family to Lakeland, Fla., in 1963, taking a position as staff radiologist at what is now LRMC. He later included Dade City Hospital and East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Fla., to his résumé. In 1999, the Joslin Diabetes Center awarded him the Triumph Medal for having lived 50-plus years with diabetes.

He is survived by three children, Mary H. “Mollie” Dodd of Tallahassee, Fla., Anna W. Dodd and husband, Scott Eakin, of Smyrna, Ga., and Robert H. Dodd Jr., Esquire, of Denver, Colo.; and two sisters, Nadine Deeds of Orange Park, Fla., and Hilda Dodd of Jumping Branch.

Following service on Oct. 9, 2005, his body was cremated.

Submitted by Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, Hinton.
