Glenn Ray ‘Mule’ Bennett

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — Glenn Ray “Mule” Bennett, 66, went home to be with his Lord at 8:37 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at the Doctor’s West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. His death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born May 26, 1940, in Hinton to Milton and Ursa Keaton Bennett, both deceased, as well as one brother, Jackie Bennett. He was a high school All-America football player and also played at the West Virginia University where he graduated with a degree in education. He taught and coached sports at Hinton High School.

Glenn was a member, national director and judge of the American Paint Horse Association and also a director of the Ohio Paint Horse Association. He was also a trainer of national and world champion paint horses. Glenn had spent the past 18 years in this community where he attended Grace Community Church, playing an active role in the Bless Your Heart seed group. He was a salesman with McGraw-Hill Co.

Survivors include his wife, Gamma Bennett, whom he married on Jan. 10, 2001; his son, Michael (Jeri) Bennett of Kent, Ohio; granddaughter, Erin Bennett; sister, Mildred Reed of Texas; brother, Gene (Betty) Bennett of Maryland; and special cousin, Lester (Ann) Bennett of Columbus. Also surviving is a special friend, Butch Snider.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Grace Community Church, 525 Glenn Ave., Washington, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Gromacki and Pastors Jay Lucas and Sean Fox officiating, with burial to follow in Washington cemetery.

Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Bonnie Counts

OCEANA — Bonnie Counts, 89, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1917, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Arch and Ellen McReynolds Couch.

Mrs. Counts was of the Pentecostal faith. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and being with her family and friends. For over 30 years, Mrs. Counts was an Avon representative, and the last 10 years she sold, she was the leading sales lady in southern West Virginia.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Worden Counts; two sons, Worden Counts, Jr. and Leroy Counts; a granddaughter, Andrea Ellen Counts; five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Jack Counts and his wife, Linda, of Matheny, Bill Counts of Oceana and Steve Counts and his companion, Tammy Stewart, of Oceana; two sisters-in-law, June Couch of Jolliet, Ill., and Orangive Couch of Castlewood, Va.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Richard Chester officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, is serving the Counts family.

Mark Curtis

Mark Curtis, 35, of 111 Edwards St., Beckley, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.

Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley. Friends may call at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Lawrence E. ‘Bud’ Ferguson

Lawrence E. “Bud” Ferguson, 63, of Stover, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va., following surgery for lung cancer.

Born April 26, 1943, in Pearisburg, Va., he was a son of the late Ben Ferguson and Ruby Evans Ferguson.

Mr. Ferguson was an engineer in the mines for 26 years and retired 11 years ago.

He graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1962 and received his B.S. degree from Morris Harvey College in Charleston. He served in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Harper Free Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Rebecca; a brother, Benny “Pooch” Ferguson; and sisters, Connie Lewis and Shirley “Snooks” Meador.

Survivors include his wife of three years, Millie Chandler Yahya Ferguson; daughter, Tammy Leonard and husband, Jeff, of Lester; sons, Lawrence E. “Larry” Ferguson II of Crab Orchard and Jamie Ferguson and wife, Paulette, of Dry Creek; sister, Danese Divers of Stover; five grandchildren, Joseph, Alex, Lawrence E. “Trey” III, Lexie and Presley; stepchildren, Jeff Yahya and wife, Jessie, of Princeton, Lisa Yahya of Cool Ridge and Joey Yahya of Cool Ridge; seven step grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Dick Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be J.D. Meador, Jeremy Meador, Brian Vest, Wade Divers, Jammie Ferguson, Benny Ferguson, Eric Snodgrass, Kevin Wesley, Jimmy Roach and Donald Peters.

Anna Lee Hinkle Hunt

GLEN JEAN — Our loving wife and mother, Anna Lee Hinkle Hunt, 72, of Glen Jean, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a long illness.

Born July 25, 1934, at Price Hill, she was the daughter of the late Hirsie Clarence and Carrie Madeline Crum Hinkle.

Three brothers, Charles, Clarence and David Lee Hinkle, and five sisters, Margaret Smith, Patricia Angius, Edna, Elizabeth and Jean Hinkle, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Billy E. Hunt; five sons, Billy Hunt Jr. and wife, Pamela, of Oak Hill, Randy Hunt and wife, Brenda, of Beckley, James Hunt and companion of Meadow Bridge, Mark Hunt and companion of Maple Fork and Michael Hunt and companion of Beckley; three daughters, Rita Hunt Martin and husband, Theodore, of Upper Marlboro, Md., Lois Hunt Bailey and husband, Lawrence, of Oak Hill and Terri Hunt and companion of Maple Fork; and a sister, Jackie Vandall of Oak Hill.

Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, Brian Hunt, Bethany Hunt, Celia Hunt, Brandon Hunt, Mark Hunt, Aaron Hunt, Amanda Hunt, James Hunt, Jeremy Hunt, Mathew Hunt, Christina Hunt, Anna Hunt, Brandi Hunt, Leann Hunt, Travis Hunt, Josh Hunt, Charles Lintner, Christopher Bellotti, Michael Lambert, Mathew Lambert, Steven Adkins and Ellen Gibson; two great-grandchildren, Carrissa Hunt and Kia Smith; and a special niece, Pamela Hinkle White of Charleston.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Burnette officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Granville C. Hunter

KIEFFER — Granville C. Hunter, 62, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at his home following a long illness.

Born April 18, 1944, at Kieffer, he was the son of the late Ray Hunter and Mildred Crookshanks Hunter of Kieffer.

Mr. Hunter was a logger and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Garnet Gilkeson, and two brothers, Gene and Gary Hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Heaster Hunter; two daughters, Darla Hunter of Clearwater, Fla., Candy Hunter of Ronceverte; a stepdaughter, Gina Burns Knapp of Montvale, Va.; four brothers, Gilmer of Kieffer, Glen and wife, Dorothy, of Crawley, Gaynel and wife, Linda, of Kieffer and Gerald and wife, Jenny, of Crawley; four sisters, Gilda Carey and husband, Ed, of Crawley, Galena Knapp and husband, Tim, of Rupert, Gwenda Heaster and husband, Doug, of Crawley and Gala Sheppard of Kieffer; a step grandson, Jordan Taylor; a step granddaughter, Elizabeth Pike; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Burns cemetery, Kieffer, with Pastor Charles Meadows officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Mary Ella Boothe Kessler

COCOA, Fla. — Mary Ella Boothe Kessler, 89, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at the Health Center of Merritt Island, Fla.

Born in Oak Hill on Oct. 1, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Edgar L. and Mary Martha Blake Boothe.

Mary was a retied registered nurse, having worked for 46 years at several local hospitals, including Raleigh General Hospital, and some area doctors, including Dr. Starr.

She was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church. She loved music and had played piano since a child, often playing for the entertainment of friends and for church.

Her husband, Sam Kessler, and three sisters, Frances Harrell, Mildred Smith and Martha Kate VanHorn, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Sally Johnson and her husband, William, of Valdosta, Ga.; a son, Samuel B. Kessler and his wife, Gloria, of Cocoa; a sister, Anna Lou Holt of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Willa Branham, Douglas and Jeffrey Johnson and Gary and Randy Kessler; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. today at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, 5475 N. U.S. Highway 1, Cocoa, with service to follow at 11 a.m. Entombment will be at Brevard Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Bobby Lee Lilly

Bobby Lee Lilly, 62, of 373 Blue Jay Six Road, Cool Ridge, was killed when the home he shared with his mother caught on fire in the early morning hours Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006.

Born Aug. 17, 1944, in Raleigh County, he was the son of the late Edward Earl Lilly.

Mr. Lilly was a devoted and loving son to his mother. He enjoyed visits from his two children and grandchildren. He loved a good joke.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred Charolette Lilly; a son, Eddie Lee Carr and wife, Deborah Lynn, of Spanishburg; daughter, Tammy Mae Bishop and husband, Patrick Allen, of Lindside; grandchildren, Danielle Nicole and Shyann Marie Carr, Preston Ryand and Bryce Allen Bishop; and cousin, Frankie Bragg of Ghent.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Hicks, Freddie Cooper, John Lilly and Sam Peters.

Family and friends may visit with Mrs. Lilly after the funeral at the Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Emert Charlton McClung

MOUNT NEBO — Emert Charlton McClung, 79, formerly of Harrisonville, Mo., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006.

Born March 23, 1927, at Quinwood, he was a son of the late Cecil and Anna Orndorff McClung.

“Brud” was a toolmaker by trade, but his love was farming. He also loved teaching Sunday school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended Buckhorn United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Shirley McClung, and a sister, Wilma Fleener.

Survivors include his wife, Janie McClung; three daughters, Jan McClung of Garden City, Mo., Carmel Tabaretti of St. Albans and Debra Storz of Adams, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leora McClung of Elkview and Celesta Swartz of Leivasy; and three brothers, Montgomery McClung of Levisay, Rannie McClung of Mount Nebo and the Rev. Tim McClung of Mount Nebo.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Buckhorn United Methodist Church with Pastor Garlin Groves and Pastor Ron Crum officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Baptist Church cemetery, Carl.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.

Noka H. McGraw

FAYETTEVILLE — Noka H. McGraw, 80, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following an extended illness.

Born April 20,1926, at Beauty Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Aaron Carver and Lilly Bragg Carver.

Mrs. McGraw was a homemaker and a cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Paul “H.P.” McGraw, on Aug. 13, 2003.

Survivors include her three sons, Thomas Eugene “Rusty” Miller and his wife, Cathy E., of Fayetteville, William L. “Bill” McGraw of Fayetteville and Paul Michael McGraw and his wife, Kathleen, of Fayetteville; a stepson, Richard L. McGraw and his wife, Barbara, of Wilmington, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Edythe Pauline Seely of Concord, N.C.; a brother, Clarence M. Carver of Beauty Mountain; and several grandchildren.

Graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
