Howard Junior Vealey, 77, of Beckley, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2006.
Born Oct. 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Howard and Lizzie Prichard Vealey.
Howard loved to hunt and fish and was a retired coal miner.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janice Vealey; brothers, James Vealey and Joe Vealey; sisters, Margaret Lupgens, Edna Matheney, Jane Ellen Lowe and Beverly Goldberg; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Jack Matheney officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ernest Ralph Berry
BROOKS — Ernest Ralph Berry, 87, of Brooks, died Saturday evening, Dec. 16, 2006, at the Springfield Center at Landside, following a long illness.
Born Dec. 10, 1919, in Raleigh County near Hinton, he was the son of the late Sampson and Viola Plumley Berry.
Mr. Berry was a former timberman and a former window factory worker for the Graham Window Co., and he was an Army veteran of World War II.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lewis, Calvin, Julian, and Freddie Berry; and one sister, Goldie Berry Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jessie Margaret Richmond Berry; three sons, Charles Berry of Brooks, Curtis Berry and wife Juanita of Freezeland Mt., and Ralph Berry of Irish Mt. Road; two daughters, Edith Lilly and husband Kevin of Forest Hill and Judy Adkins and husband Seymore of Freezeland Mt.; eight grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; two brothers, Stanley R. Berry and wife Crystal Evelene of Bozoo and Arnold Berry and wife Pearl of Brooks; three sisters, Effie McKinzie of Coal City, and Ada Mae and Jane Ward, both of Hix; and three sisters-in-law, Anna, Betty, and Virginia Berry.
Private services and burial will be held at the family’s discretion at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Doris Ann Brown
FAIRDALE — Doris Ann Brown, formerly of Cyclone, departed this life and entered Heaven’s gates with her family by her side on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at her residence, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born January 24, 1939 at Davin, she was the daughter of the late Lacy and Viola ‘Vine’ Lusk Paynter.
Mrs. Brown was a 1957 graduate of Oceana High School, a homemaker, a former member of Campus Church of God; a member of Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time shopping, dining with her family and vacationing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jackie Paynter, David Paynter and Roger Paynter; a grandson, Zachary Bailey; and a son-in-law, Sammy Bailey.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 49 years, Dennis Brown of Fairdale; three daughters, Melissa Blake and her husband Jimmy of Summersville, Marsha Johnson and her husband Johnny of Heaters, and Kristi Cook and her husband Chuck of Fairdale; two sisters, Betty Harris and her husband John of Martinsville, Va. and Linda Cook and her husband Robert of Cyclone; five grandchildren, Kelli Woolum of Coal City, Chad Johnson and his wife Cindy of Flatwoods, Matthew Bailey of Heaters, Chloe Cook and Will Cook, both of Fairdale; a sister-in-law, Pat Paynter of Cyclone; an aunt, Audrey Perry of Cyclone; two special caregivers, India Paugh and Robin Acord; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A celebration of Doris’ life will be 7 p.m. today at the Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Graveside services will be noon Tuesday at the Paynter cemetery in Campus. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet the family at the cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Matthew Bailey Eugene Paugh, Jerry Paugh, Bill Cook, Les Cook, and Junior Blake.
The family will receive friends from 5 until time of the service today at the funeral home.

Vivian Ann Colvin Hairston, 87, of 257 Burimester Avenue, Beckley, passed away at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Born June 19, 1919 at Alexander City, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Otho Olders Colvin and Mary Leala Avery Colvin.
She did domestic work, and was a member of the Faith Chapel A.M.E., Raleigh, WV. She was the Mother of the church.
Other than her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sons, McKinley Hairston, Deighton Colvin, and Reuben Hairston; a daughter, Sharon DeLores Colvin; brothers, Willis, Lee, Jezerell, Enoch, and Leo Colvin; and sisters, Otho Lee Hamilton, Lois C. Tynch, Amanda C. Johnson, Esther C. Branch, and Mary E. Colvin.
Survivors include her sons, James H. (Dorether) Hairston of Beckley, William T. (Christine) Hairston and Alfred B. (Drucilla) Colvin, both of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Ollie Olders Colvin of Kissimmee, Fla.; a sister, Lois Lucille Travis of Harlem Heights; and a sister-in-law, Ordeen Colvin of Brooklyn, NY.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Heart of God Ministries, with the Rev. Avaurn Staples and the Rev. Marie Catus officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

MOUNT HOPE — Jesse Allan Breeden, 55, formerly of Hilltop, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Breeden of Lester; and two sisters, Karen Stevens of Connecticut and Sherry Pisher of West Columbia.
According to his wishes, Jesse was cremated. There will be no service.

Jerry Paul Newton Carter
DIAMOND — Jerry Paul Newton Carter, 57, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007, at his residence after a short illness, surrounded by his family.
He was born Sept. 6, 1949, at Welch, a son of the late Charlie and Mary Blankenship Carter.
Jerry was the owner and operator of Big J Trucking Co., Diamond, and was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Belle VFW post and worked in the coal mines at Welch for Cannelton Coal Co.
Jerry loved to go hunting and boating, was a big NASCAR fan and always enjoyed four-wheeling with his family.
Along with his parents, his brother, Ronnie Carter, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Phillip Paul Carter and Erin Sagady of Bluefield; his granddaughter, Cianna Brynn Carter of Bluefield; his daughter and son-in-law, Gerri Lucille ‘Gigi” and Chris Austin of Bluefield, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Betty Carter of Beckley, Donald and Patricia “Shan” Carter of Montcalm, and Larry and Vanessa Carter of Princeton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Roger Cooper of Chesapeake, Emogene and Sonny Brown of Shrewsbury, Faye and Jimmy Predrero of New Jersey, and Beatrice and Charles “Chuck” Homan of North Carolina.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Anthony “Moe” Carter officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, with military rites.
Family and friends will gather for the visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
