William ‘Wally’ Warren Sr.

SOUDERTON, Pa. — William Wallace “Wally” Warren Sr., died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, after a short illness. Wally was 83.

He was born Nov. 4, 1921, at Beckley, the son of Harlow Warren and Cada White Warren. One of three children, Wally grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa., attended public schools and graduated with honors from Taylor Alderdice High School in 1939. Wally worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Pittsburgh before volunteering for the Navy in 1942.

Wally served during World War II for three years as a radioman second class in the Aleutians and South Pacific, and was honorably discharged in 1945. While in the service, Wally met his future wife, Audrey Jones of Stamford, Conn. at a USO. They were married in Los Angeles while Wally was on leave. After his discharge, Wally returned with his wife, Audrey, to Beckley and worked in the burgeoning field of radio broadcasting. Wally moved with his family, now including son, William Jr., to Fort Wayne, Ind., to attend Indiana Technical Institute. Audrey and Wally were blessed with the addition of daughter, Vivian, in 1949, and Wally graduated in 1952 with a degree in radio and television engineering.

After graduation, Wally moved to Falls Church, Va., to take a position with Gates Radio Co. Until his retirement in 1991, Wally was employed in radio station equipment sales and consulting for Gates, Howard Frazier Inc., Malarkey Taylor and Associates, American Electronics Laboratory, RCA’s Broadcasting Division and with his own company, Warren RF Services. He was known for having what we would now call an “old school” attitude toward sales and customer service. His father had also been in sales, reputedly having sold Burroughs adding machines by horseback in the early 1900s.

Like many of his forebears, Wally was a man of faith, active in Falls Church Presbyterian Church as an elder and deacon. In later years, he joined Zwingli United Church of Christ where his daughter attended. Mr. Warren was devoted to both his immediate family and the larger Warren family. He organized three family reunions held in southwestern Virginia, attended by uncles and aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. At one reunion, a seventh cousin was in attendance. His interest in genealogy culminated in the publication of his book entitled, “An American Family Called Warren,” containing genealogical information on 12 generations of Warrens in America and some 3000 relatives, all organized in a narrative, recounting family stories and individual family histories. The book was based in part on the work of his father Harlow (himself the author of the three-volume “Beckley USA” and a noted Kanawha County historian) and on research that he conducted over a six-year period throughout the eastern United States.

His parents, his brother, Dick, sister, Maybelle, and wife, Audrey Jones Warren, all preceded him in death.

Wally is survived by a son, William W. Warren Jr. and daughter-in-law, Ellen M. Warren, of Harrisburg, Pa.; a daughter, Vivian McNichol and son-in-law, William McNichol, of Telford, Pa.; and an aunt, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Zwingli United Church of Christ, 350 Wile Ave., Souderton.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the service Nov. 5 at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Zwingli United Church of Christ, or to Dock Woods Community, 275 Dock Dr., Lansdale, PA 19446.

Arrangements by Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
