Rebbecca Louise Thomas

ALPOCA — Rebbecca Louise Thomas, 80, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Oct. 18, 1925, in Parroit, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter Creaig and Lozie Kimbelton Swanner.

Ms. Thomas was a lifelong homemaker and a live-in companion for others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include three daughters, Barbara Griffith and Dru McNeely, both of Alpoca, and Patricia Spice and her husband, Don, of Ohio; a son, Carl “Joe” Thomas of Alpoca; and a sister, Yvonne Evans of Florida.

Ms. Thomas enjoyed life by spending time with her 13 grandchildren, Joey and Tammy, Jerry and Teresa, Johnny and Monica, David and Angie, Bobby Joe and Amanda Griffith, Butch and Sherry Thomas, Barbara Clark, Sean Spice, Donnie, Debbie, Eddie, Tony, and Chrissy Malovic; as well as her great-grandchildren, Curtis, Nicole, Josh, Heath, Corey, Aaron, Katie, Victoria, Zacharey, and Chase Griffith, Brandy, Stephen, and Jonathan Thomas, and Brad and T.C. Comer; a special friend of the family, Shorty Miller; three sisters-in-law, Thelma Bridgeman, Adair Creaig, and Luella Hornsby, and many other family members and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Joey, Jerry, Johnny, David, and Bobby Joe Griffith and a great-grandson Heath Griffith.

Anne G. Fox Tilley

ROANOKE, Va. — Anne Gresilda Fox Tilley, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Tilley, and granddaughter, Stella Angelica Lubbs.

Mrs. Tilley was a longtime member of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who took great pride in her homemaking abilities.

The youngest of 14 children, she is survived by her daughter, Gresilda “Kris” Tilley-Lubbs and husband, Dan; three grandchildren, Kirsten Lubbs-Robinson and husband, Keith, Eowyn Lubbs and fiancé, David Hernandez, and Peter Lubbs, all of Roanoke; and sisters, Ruth Dooley of Fayetteville and Hilda Donnally of Charlottesville, Va.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oakey’s South Chapel with the Rev. Ed Woodard officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Pleasant View cemetery, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oakey’s South Chapel.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road, S.W., Roanoke, VA 24018 for creating a handicap accessible environment.

French E. Tredway Jr.

OAK HILL — French E. Tredway Jr., 80, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006.

Born Feb. 18, 1925, he was the son of the late French and Margaret Alta Tredway.

French was an avid woodcrafter and recently became a Christian through Pastor Jerry Bush of Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Tredway was retired from Long-Airdox after 33 years of service.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Maxine Blackwell Tredway; a daughter, Terri Lea Tredway; and a sister, Doris Beals.

Those left to cherish his loving memory include daughters, Sandra Tredway Meyer and husband, Richard, of Oshkosh, Wis., Judith Tredway Jones and husband, Harold, of Oak Hill, Iris Rose Patrick and husband, Jerry, of Gatewood and Tammy Lynn Tredway Kitchen of Maryland; a son, French Tredway III and wife, Starlett, of Oak Hill; a sister, Freda Blackwell of Oak Hill; a brother, Kenneth Tredway of Ohio; granddaughters, Susan Stark of Oshkosh, Debbie Hornacek of Lexington, S.C., Amanda Patrick of Summersville and Rachael Kitchen of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; grandsons, Harold “Punkin” Jones Jr. of Oak Hill, Bill E. Jones of Oak Hill and Christopher Patrick of Beckley; and eight great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 12:30 p.m. until time of service today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Harold “Punkin” Jones Jr., Bill Jones, Christopher Patrick, Lewis Jones, Harold Jones, French Tredway III and Oather Jones.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is serving the family.

Ernest Walker

OCEANA — Ernest Walker, 51, departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, following a long illness.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Claude A. Williams

Claude A. Williams, 88, of Artie, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

Born May 9, 1917, at Cabin Creek, he was the son of the late Harvey Wilson and Luella Pearl Maynor Williams.

Mr. Williams was an avid rabbit hunter.

He is survived by a sister, Doris Spicer of Georgetown, Del.; and two brothers, Cecil Williams and wife, Deloris, of Artie and Ralph Williams and wife, Gladys, of Winthrop Harbour, Ill. He will be greatly missed by his special friends, Frankie, Ginger, and Rachel Workman, all of Artie, who loved him very much.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Hodge cemetery, Artie, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree and Scottie Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in Hodge cemetery, Artie.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the service will start at 2 p.m.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Lee Ballard

OAK HILL — Dorothy Lee Ballard, 83, of Oak Hill, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2005, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston.

Arrangements by High Lawn Funeral Home, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill.

Mary ‘Ellie’ Combs Bonds

Mary “Ellie” Combs Bonds, 88, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Heartland of Beckley, following a short illness.

Born Aug. 9, 1917 at Posey-Saxon, she was the daughter of the late Freddie and Ina Webb Combs.

Mary moved to Richmond, Va., in 1963, where she worked as manager of the Greyhound Bus Terminal, and worked until retirement for Atlantic Pump and Equipment Co. as a secretary.

After retirement, Mary “Ellie” moved back to Beckley. Later, she lived with her daughter, Brenda, at Glen Daniel until 3 1/2 years ago when she became a resident of Heartland.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Bonds, in June of 1963; her son, Billy Harve Bonds; a daughter, Stella Fiffick Baldwin; two grandsons, Greg Brown and Donald Bonds; four brothers, Arnold, Charles, Howard, and Clarence Combs; four sisters, Georgia Honaker Surrett, Ruby Sarrett, Nella, and Stella Combs.

Mary is survived by her children, Robert Boyd Bonds and his wife Mary Beth, Nella Cadran Johnson and her husband Charles, and Kathy Bonds, all of Richmond, Va., Kay Brown and her husband Robert, and Brenda Brown and her husband Noel, all of Glen Daniel; two sisters, Hester Harvey of Arnett and Nona Hoots of Union Grove, N.C.; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Arnett Assembly of God, with the Pastor Steve Tincher and Rev. George Hendrick officiating, both of whom she thought so much of. Burial will follow in the Floyd Milam cemetery at Posey-Saxon.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Barry, Randy, and Noel Brown, Jr., Jimmy and Mike Cadran, Johnny Fiffick, and Ronnie and David Bonds.

Joseph Andrew ‘Jodie’ Booth

PETERSTOWN — Joseph Andrew “Jodie” Booth, 93, of Peterstown, passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va.

Born Aug. 18, 1912 at Hinton, he was the son of the late Armstead Edie and Dansie Line Booth.

Mr. Booth was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and had retired from the Appalachian Power Company at Glen Lyn, Va.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Booth was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Reed Booth; two brothers, Oscar and James Lee Booth; one sister, Letha Mae Trivett; and a grandson, Mark Booth.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Booth and wife Jan of Newtown, Conn., and Joe Booth and wife Eva of Wells, Maine; three daughters, Evelyn Harvey and husband Bobby of Peterstown, Vivian Chambers and husband Jordy of Richmond, Va., and Patricia Dotson and husband Ricky of Bluefield; one brother, Lindy Booth of Kenansville, N.C.; two sisters, Edris Whittaker of Glen Lyn, Va., and Loene Meade of Princeton; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, with Rev. Tony Reed officiating. Burial will follow at the Peterstown cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mattie Whitman Camp

COVINGTON, Va. — Mattie Whitman Camp, 73, of Covington, Va., died peacefully in her sleep Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Milton, Mass.

She was born March 6, 1932 in Neola, a daughter of the late Charles Elbert and Annie Marie Fifer Whitman.

Mrs. Camp was a former employee of the Industrial Rayon Plant and Hercules, Inc., for several years. She enjoyed reading, baking, crafts, traveling, gardening, participating in church activities, and befriending many in need. Mrs. Camp was an avid prayer warrior and will be sorely missed in that capacity. She was a member of the Parish Court United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Westvaco Rescue Squad Ladies’ Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver D. Camp, in September 2004; her foster parents, Joe and Lillie Pinnell; two daughters, Brenda Sue Camp and Kathy Marie Camp; one son, Freddie Joe Camp; and her dear sister, Georgia Rucker.

Survivors include her daughter, Cecelia Brosnahan of Milton, Mass.; son-in-law, Glenn Kidder of Milton, Mass.; four grandchildren, Erin Brosnahan, Kelsey Brosnahan, Marissa Brosnahan, and Jameson Brosnahan, all of Milton, Mass.; one niece, Vickie Rock of Covington, Va.; and six nephews, Aloys “Buck Gier, III, David Rucker, Jerry Rucker, Sr., Jerry Rucker, Jr., Kenny Rucker, and Ricky Rucker, all of Covington, Va. She was blessed with many dedicated friends, in-laws, and relatives.

The funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. in Parish Court United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Camp. The interment will be made in Alvon Presbyterian Church cemetery in Alvon.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mrs. Camp’s name be made to the Parish Court United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2333 S. Carpenter Drive, Covington, VA 22426.

Arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Va.

Earl Walter Cox

CLINTONVILLE — Earl Walter Cox, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation at this time.

Arrangements by Longanacre Funeral Home, Ft. Spring.

Emmett B. Crum

Emmett B. Crum, 91, of Beckley, passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2005.

He was born June 14, 1914 in Mt. Hope; he was the son of the late William T. and Nora Ellen Thornhill Crum.

Emmett was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, youth leader, deacon, and elder. He was also a former two-term mayor of Mabscott.

In addition to his parents, Emmett was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Jones Crum; a sister, Carrie Hinkle; and four brothers, Jim, Roy, Lee, and Luther Crum.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, David L. Crum and wife Norma of Beckley and Donald Crum and wife Mary of Beckley; a daughter, Alice Higgins and husband Charles of Saraland, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Emory “Pete” Crum of Columbus, Ohio.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Christian Church, with Pastors Ken Overdorf, Rick Abshire, and Sheldon Cosma officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery, Oak Grove.

Michael Crum, Tommy Crum, J.R. Ellison, Lindsey Whitten, Glen Warden, Dick Lilly, and Jim Robinson will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is serving the family.
