Cecil Roland Bryant

Cecil Roland Bryant, age 85, of 4-H Lake Road, Daniels, passed away Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born at Kimbell, Va., on Sept. 14, 1920, he was the son of the late Lawrence McCorkle Bryant and Mae Etta Goodson Bryant.

Mr. Bryant was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant. He retired from the New River Coal Company with 42 years of service, and had worked for Stanaford Mines as a cable operator. Cecil was a very kind and gentle man. He enjoyed fishing at Little Beaver Lake and the New River. He loved working in his garden and keeping his lawn free of dandelions. He loved feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Cecil was a Christian being of the Baptist faith. (John 3:16). For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Cecil was preceded in death by his much loved son-in-law, Ronald J. “Ronnie” Hopkins, in June 2005, also two brothers, Jack McCorkle Bryant and Lawrence Edward Bryant.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Annie Lee Sauchuck Bryant whom he dearly loved; a daughter, Frances Bryant Hopkins of Grandview; a son, Cecil Wayne Bryant and his wife, Nancy, of Yorktown, Va., and their children, Amanda Adams and husband, Jason, and son, William Cooper Adams of Japan, also Jason Bryant and wife, Deborah, of Mars, Pa.; a brother, William Bryant and wife, Mary Jane, of Iowa; a sister, Dorothy Angle and husband, Junior, of Newport News, Va.; brother and sisters-in-law, Frank and Bernice Sauchuck of Beckley, Margaret S. Jones and husband, Casey, of Daniels, and Jack Lawrence Bryant; his special nephew. Additional family members and special friends, Chad and Rachel L. Hopkins and daughter, Ella, of Grandview, Rebecca and Thomas Norman of Daniels, and Wes and Kellie Hopkins Williams of Pennsylvania, Bob and Marie Maynard of Daniels, Hubert Richards of Shady Spring, Pete and Benita Sauchuck of Beaver, and so many friends who kept Cecil in their thoughts and prayers.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Jack Thomas of the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be family and friends of Cecil’s.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church, 20/20 Vision Fund, P.O. Box 427, Daniels, WV 25832, or the Raleigh County Humane Society, P.O. Box 5128, Beckley, WV 25801.

India M. Chapman

LINDSIDE — India M. Chapman, 79, died Thursday, March 30, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lindside Christian Church. Burial in the Chapman Family cemetery, Lindside. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wickline Funeral Home.

Reuben Hairston

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Reuben O. Hairston, 66, formerly of Raleigh, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his residence in Columbus, following a long illness.

Born February 12, 1940, at Sullivan, WV, to Vivian Colvin Hairston and the late James Henry Hairston.

Mr. Hairston was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Faith Chapel A.M.E. Church, Raleigh, WV.

He was preceded in death by: his father, two brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; mother, Vivian; seven children, Reuben, Jr., John, Florence, Valencia, Regina, Tena, and Rosa; two sisters, Bernice Oates and Audrey Ranson; four brothers, James (Dorether), William (Christine), Alfred (Drucilla), and Ronald; two aunts, Mary Colvin, and Lucille Travis, and an uncle, Ollie Colvin; twenty grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, 748 South Fayette St., Beckley, with the Rev. Avaurn Staples officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Dennis J. Maatman

Dennis James Maatman of Klaus St., Beckley, died Monday, March 27, 2006, in McGuire Veterans Area Medical Center, Richmond, Va., of acute leukemia. He was 50 years of age.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. in the National cemetery at Grafton.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.

Geneva Newcomb

“Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: For we walk by faith, not by sight: We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” —2 Corinthians 5:6-8

Geneva Newcomb, 75, of Bradley, went home to be with her Savior on March 31, 2006 at the Raleigh Center in Beaver following a short illness.

Geneva was preceded in death by her son, William Earl Newcomb; her parents, Tom Watts and Frances Watts Parsley; two brothers, Delbert Watts and Tom Watts, Jr.; and two sisters, Oweva Watts and Dovie Watts.

Geneva was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, crocheting, and crafts. She was a member of the Baileysville Baptist Church and attended Grace Baptist Church in Beckley.

Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 57 years, Delbert Newcomb; a son, Harold “Ed” Newcomb and wife, Phyllis, of Bradley; three granddaughters, Tara and Tiffany Newcomb of Morgantown and Ashley Newcomb of Bradley; one grandson, Michael Shane Newcomb and wife, Leslie, of Oceana; two great-grandchildren, Crystal and Shaina Newcomb also of Oceana; sisters, Delphia Salmons of Hurley, VA, Bertha McClellan of Genoa, WV, and Edith Hesson of Barboursville; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2006 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Roger Harding officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is in charge of the arrangements.

James William Simmons

OAK HILL — James William Simmons, 77, died Thursday, March 30, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with a Christian Wake at 8 p.m.

Sam Titta

Sam Titta, 76, of Madam’s Creek, Hinton, died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley, following a short illness.

Connie Sue Richmond Tucher

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Connie Sue Richmond Tucher, 52, left us to be with Jesus on Thursday, March 30, 2006.

Born Feb. 5, 1954, in Radford, Va., she was the daughter of Norman L. and Madeline Ward Richmond of Sandstone.

Connie worked at Community Hospital North for over 20 years. She loved her job and had many special friends there. She had recently been on partial disability due to complications from diabetes.

She was an active member of The Bible Church in Indianapolis and everyone enjoyed her special solos. She loved life, enjoyed traveling and cherished her family and numerous friends.

Besides her parents, Connie is survived by four sisters, Shirley Brackin and her husband, Jerry, Erma Napier and her husband, Jake, Vaunda Dinkins and Wanda West and her husband, Kevin; two brothers, Emmett Richmond and his wife, Rose, and Travis Richmond and his wife, Cindy. Connie was a special aunt and will be greatly missed by all.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Ramp Holiness Church with Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Family cemetery at Ramp.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the service on Tuesday.

James Shelffield Via

James Shelffield Via, 97, of Heartland Nursing Home, Beckley, formerly of Bluefield, died March 29, 2006.

Services will be 12 noon Monday at McConnells Funeral Home, Bluefield, W.Va. Friends may call one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.

Glenville David Ward

Glenville David Ward, age 84, of Hilltop, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Hilltop Center following a long illness.

Born Dec. 2, 1921, in Upshur County, he was the son of the late James Glen Ward and Pearl Ida Tolley Ward.

Mr. Ward was preceded in death by brothers, Clifton, Alonzo, and James; and a sister, Violet Harvey.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a nephew, Thomas Ward and wife, Jo Ann, and their daughter, Denise, of Beckley, and his extended family of Hilltop Nursing Home.

Graveside rites and burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Stanaford cemetery with the Rev. Randy Smithson officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Jimmy Warrick

OAK HILL — Jimmy Warrick, 48, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center.

Roy Lee Collins

ROCKRIDGE — Roy Lee Collins, 85, of Rockridge, near Paynesville, died late Sunday evening, April 2, 2006, at the Golden Harvest at Welch Community Hospital, following a long illness.

Born June 9, 1920, on Collins Ridge, near Paynesville, the son of the late Lewis and Rebecca Roberts Collins.

He was of the Baptist faith, having been baptized in 1996. He was a former member of The Oddfellows, was an avid old-time horse trader and loved to sing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Marie Blankenship Collins in 1997; a son, Lewis; two daughters, Wilma Jean and Frankie Stanton; a son-in-law, Dickie Vickers; grandsons, Duke Ramirez and Michael Collins; a granddaughter, Claudia Sarie Nawafleh; two sisters, Chloe Muncy and Molly Kennedy, and three infant brothers.

He is survived by four sons, Nolan Collins and his wife, Billie of Richlands, Va., Billy Collins of Saudia Arabia and wife, Kathy, Cheyenne Collins and wife, Mary of Sullivan, and Joe Collins and wife, Belinda of Clintonville; four daughters, Becky Vickers of Columbus, Ohio, Brenda Pick and husband, Charlie of Clayton, Mich., Betty Day and husband, Herman and Jenny Puckett and husband, Bruce, all of Beartown; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Glen and Patsy Vance, and Cleve Sweeney.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger with his son, Brother Joe Collins, and his son-in-law, Brother Herman Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Roy and Dorothy Collins Family cemetery at Beartown.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Granddaughters will be flower bearers.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
