Carrie ‘Carol’ Ashley

MULLENS — Carrie “Carol” Ashley, 59, of Mullens, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005.

Born Sept. 2, 1946, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Frank O’Neal and Zola Smith O’Neal.

Carol loved to shop, do crafts, garden, and embroider. She was a graduate of Mullens High School. She worked for Kroger’s at Beckley Crossing for 10 years. She was a member of the Solid Rock Worship Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas “Skip” Ashley; and a brother, Herb O’Neal.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lisa Mitchell and husband, Brandon, of Mullens; a son, Tim Ashley and wife, Kim, of King, N.C.; grandson, Ian Ashley; three granddaughters, Courtney Ashley, Morgan Mitchell and Hannah Ashley; three brothers, Gene O’Neal and wife, Doris, of Still Run, Sam O’Neal and wife, Jean, of Barkers Ridge, and Dave O’Neal and wife, Rose, of Mullens; two sisters, Gracie Stone and husband, Lewis, of Mullens and Donna Cayton and husband, Wayne, of Parkersburg.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. David Pollock and the Rev. Mickey Mitchell officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 2 p.m. until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice of Southern West Virginia, and to her caregivers, Vickie Webb and Tammy Mogeni.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is serving the family.

Scott Russell Bandy

WINONA — Scott Russell Bandy, 33, passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at home.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Keeney’s Creek Baptist Church, Winona.

Charles Edward Baker Jr.

CANVAS — Charles Edward “Eddie” Baker Jr., 53, of Canvas, Nicholas County, died Monday, May 14, 2007.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Summersville.

Dorothy Eva Castle

FAYETTEVILLE — Dorothy Eva Castle, 71, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, May 14, 2007, at the Hilltop Center following complications resulting from a spinal cord injury.

Born Dec. 4, 1935, at Gatewood, she was the daughter of Elizabeth L. Olenick Patrick of Oak Hill and the late Chris E. Patrick.

Mrs. Castle was a retired deli clerk at Kroger in Oak Hill. She was a homemaker and she loved working in her flower gardens.

Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen “Depot” Castle.

Left to cherish her memory is her mother, Elizabeth L. Patrick of Oak Hill; her son, Ralph Bragg and his wife, Joann, of Fayetteville; a daughter, Karen Martin and her husband, Phillip, of Victor; five grandchildren, Shane Feazell, Erin Feazell of St. Albans, Kristin Smith and her husband, Mark, of Morgantown, Jon-Erik Bragg of Fayetteville and Cpl. Tyler Bragg of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Reilly, Aidan and Zachary; and two brothers, Robert Patrick of Fayetteville and Chris Patrick of Winfield.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Cotton Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 884, Beckwith, WV 25840 or Gideons Memorial Bible International, P.O. Box 429, Oak Hill, WV 25901.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Cotton Hill Baptist Church for their support and prayers during their mother’s illness.

In keeping with Dorothy’s wishes, a private service was noon Wednesday, May 16, at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Philip Dent officiating.

Mavis Collier, 97, of Sophia, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Robert L. ‘Bobby’ Cottle

FAYETTEVILLE — Robert Lee “Bobby” Cottle, 70, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born July 23, 1936, at Dempsey, he was the son of the late Robert M. Cottle and Velva McCormick Cottle.

Bobby was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served on the Evangelism Committee and was an usher and a greeter. He was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Bobby was a man who loved the Lord.

He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1955. He worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways and Peerless Furniture Co. He also worked for Merchants and Miners National Bank for 20 years, and while there he attended banking school and graduated from a three-year course. He liked to fish, hunt and camp in his younger days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Sharon, to whom he was married for 43 years; and a sister, Peggy Jane McCowan.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Debbie Knisley and her husband, Donald, of Pasadena, Md.; a son, Gary Lee Cottle of Fayetteville; a sister, Margot Matherly and her husband, Richard, of Ravenswood; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth McCowan and his wife, Betty, of Clintwood, Va.

Service will be 11 a.m., Friday, May 18, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Dave Richardson and the Rev. Robert Morey officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gladys Ruth Deck

On Monday, May 14, 2007, Gladys Ruth Deck, of Carriage Drive, Beckley, died at Raleigh General Hospital. She was 82 years of age.

Born March 24, 1925, in Princeton, she was one of nine children born to the late Acie Frank and Rebecca Ann Whitlow Jones.

Mrs. Deck was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. A member of First United Methodist Church for 57 years, she was active in the First United Methodist Women’s Group. Mrs. Deck also worked with the Right to Life movement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death a son, Mark Leslie Deck; a brother, Acie Reed Jones of Crab Orchard; sisters, Dorothy Sue Kandrach of Beckley, Helen Wilson and Shirley Sckule, both of Chicago, Ill., and Joan Jones of Salem, Va.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Stewart L. Deck; three sisters, Wenoka Brown and her husband, Jack, of Salem, Va., Nancy Perozzi of Starkville, Miss., and Kitty McMillion and her husband, Benny, of Richmond, Va.; her daughters, Ruth Deck Harringotn and her husband, Dr. Chris Harrington, of Fredericksburg, Va., and their six children, Jennifer, Laura, Matthew, Victoria, Rebecca and David Harrington, and Beth Deck Hammond and her husband, Terry W. Hammond, of Rocky Mount, Va., and their four children, Elizabeth, Jeffrey, Gregory and Ryan Hammond.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Heber St., Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Stoddard officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and one hour before service at the church. Pallbearers will be family members and her church family.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy can be made to First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Heber St., Beckley, WV 25801

GREENWOOD, Del. — Virginia Fleshman, 76, of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007.

Phillip Morris Hansford

Phillip Morris Hansford, 68, of Coal City, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.

Born May 29, 1938, in Kentucky, he was the son of the late John and Jesse Patton Hansford.

Mr. Hansford was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and had worked 38 years in the coal mines.

He was an avid fisherman and NASCAR fan.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Hansford.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 34 years, Janie Graham Hansford; three daughters, Phyllis Hansford of Crab Orchard, Penny Cook and her husband, Donald, of Dameron and Ann Vance and her husband, Aaron, of Coal City; three grandsons, David and Dakota Cook and Austin Vance; two granddaughters, Brittany Cook and Hailey Vance; a brother, the Rev. Robert Hansford and wife, Lorene, of Coal City; four sisters, Sue Crump and husband, Luther, of Sophia, Janet Parker and husband, Ralph, of Beckley, Marlene Cunningham and husband, Ed, of Rhodell and Jonalee Tyree and husband, Ronald, of East Gulf; and a sister-in-law, Sue Hansford of Daniels.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Irene Harbarger

OAK HILL — Irene Harbarger, 83, of Pea Ridge, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at her home.

Born Jan. 25, 1924, in Fairchance, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James Kendall and Emma Guthrie Kendall Baker.

Irene was a member of Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill and was a member of the prayer group at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Harbarger, on Dec. 29, 1998.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Virginia McGonigal and her husband, Charles, of Richfield, Ohio, Sharon Jones and her husband, the Rev. Harold Jones, of Craigsville and Brenda Tucker and husband, Charles, of Oak Hill; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today and where tservice will be 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Harold Jones, the Rev. Ralph Shupe and the Rev. Tonya Shupe officiating. Interment will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Daisy Carter Harris

ALDERSON — Daisy Carter Harris, 85, of Flat Mountain, formerly of Logan, died Monday, May 14, 2007.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson. Graveside rites and burial will be 3 p.m. at Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Contributions of sympathy may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, Route 1 Box 280-A1, Alderson, W.Va. 24910.

Teresa Lee Hovanski Johnson

FAYETTEVILLE — Teresa Lee Hovanski Johnson, 55, died Monday, May 14, 2007.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum No. 3, Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the WVU Eye Institute, Children’s Vision Rehabilitation Program, Attn: Paula Lang, P.O. Box 9193, Morgantown, W.Va. 26506. Checks should be made payable to the WUV Foundation.
