Gabriele ‘Gabi’ Crumb

Gabriele “Gabi” Harding Crumb, of 350 Ellison Ave., Beckley, quietly passed away at her home on Monday, April 3, 2006, after courageously fighting a long battle with cancer. She was born April 18, 1927.

A native of Pforzheim, Germany, she was the daughter of Franz Schussler and Helen Aab. She moved to Beckley in 1952 and proudly became a U.S. citizen on July 26, 1955.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Delmore E Harding of Greenville, Mich., and her sister, Margaret Heinkel of Pforzheim.

“Gabi,” as her friends knew her, was a devoted wife, Mom and Grandma. She spent her working career in the service industry, most recently retiring after 26 years as a cashier for the Canteen Service of the VA Medical Center in Beckley. Prior to that, she worked as a caregiver, at a number of local restaurants and at Pinecrest Sanatorium. She was always willing to give a “little extra” to brighten the day of the people she met. She enjoyed soaking up the gentle breezes on her back porch, taking walks with her husband, visiting and finding ways to spend time with her family. She and her husband, Ray, have enjoyed being long-term members of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1606 in Beckley.

She fought many medical struggles during the past 15 years and always seemed to “bounce back” with a strength that surprised and amazed many, so much so that some of her grandchildren nicknamed her “the energizer bunny” — always able to “keep on going.” She rarely complained of the pain and never wanted to “be a bother.”

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and caregiving husband of 34 years, C. Ray Crumb; a son, Michael Harding and his wife, Peggy, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Irene Suchoza and her husband, Dane, of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jessica Harding of Virginia Beach, Timothy Harding of Norfolk, Va., Ashley Harding of Virginia Beach, Stephanie Suchoza of Charlotte and Nicholas Suchoza of Charlotte; a great-niece, Petra Schneider of Freising, Germany; two sisters, Irene Fellner of Ubersee, Germany, and Ursala Claus of Tiefenbronn, Germany; her dear cousin, Ellen Lenz of Nagold, Germany; her friends and all of those acquaintances who had the benefit of knowing her.

Private service will be April 22 at Epworth United Methodist Church, Smith Mountain Lake, Va.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia, especially Dottie Scarbro, Bridgette Gray, Teresa Jones, Virginia Hatcher, Tracy Lane, Debbie McCoy, Trish Stephenson and Connie Whitt, whose caring touch provided her friendship and much comfort during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802-1472, in Gabriele Crumb’s name.
