Frank Smedley

Frank Smedley, 69, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry, Beckley.

Julian Rex ‘Woody’ Woodrum

MOUNT LOOKOUT — Julian Rex “Woody” Woodrum, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital in Charleston, following a long illness.

Born in 1921, at Kincaid, he was the son of the late John Richard and Florence Winters Woodrum.

Rex served with the Army Air Corp during World War II, was a retired master auto mechanic, and was a member of Lover’s Leap Baptist Church of Ansted.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Arbaugh and John David Woodrum.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Underwood Woodrum of Mt. Lookout; a daughter, JoAnn Stull of Charleston; two sons, Jerry Woodrum and wife, Vicki, of Ansted and Jeffrey M. Woodrum of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Mable McClung of Lookout; a brother, Edgar Woodrum of Chicago, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Gary Walker officiating, assisted by Jack Eads and Bob Wells. At the family’s request, his body has been cremated and entombment will be at a later date at Restlawn.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service (from 12 noon to 1 p.m.) at the funeral home. There will be no evening visitation.

Donald G. Baldry

MINDEN — Donald G. Baldry, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Cypress, Texas.

Viola M. Ballard

OAK HILL — Viola M. Ballard, 89, of Oak Hill and Chesapeake, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. The family will receive friends one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Ida Mae (Jackson) Brown

Ida Mae (Jackson) Brown, 85, of 118 Smoot St., Beckley, has passed away.

CORNSTALK — Carl S. Crookshanks, of Cornstalk, passed away Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Wilson Thayer Harter Jr.

CRAIGSVILLE — Wilson Thayer Harter Jr., 60, of Craigsville, Nicholas County, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at White Funeral Home, Summersville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gray Sidney ‘Dutch’ McMann

GAP MILLS — Gray Sidney “Dutch” McMann, 84, of Gap Mills, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 8, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

He was born at Gap Mills on Feb. 24, 1922, a son of the late Edward A. and Lelia Katherine McCaleb McMann.

Mr. McMann was retired from Hercules Inc. at Covington, Va. He also manned the Hanging Rock Fire Tower on Peters Mountain for several years. He loved the mountains and enjoyed watching and feeding the wildlife at his home.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.

Mr. McMann was of the Protestant faith.

Mr. McMann was a lifelong resident of Gap Mills and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Garland and Orr Lee McMann; and five sisters, Virgie Wallace, Glenna Cruise, Pearl Kidd, Marshall Perkins and Blanche McCallister.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Irene Faudree McMann; and a daughter, Doreen Clements of Roanoke, Va.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Groves Funeral Home Chapel, Union, with the Rev. Mark Smearman officiating. Burial will follow in Carmel cemetery, Gap Mills.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Monroe County Animal League, P.O. Box 343, Union, WV 24983.

Groves Funeral Home, Union, is in charge of arrangements.

Debra Jarrell Williams

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, Debra Jarrell Williams of Palm Harbor, Fla., formerly of Beckley, became one of God’s special angels at her home in Palm Harbor. She was 54 years of age.

Born Sept. 20, 1952, Debra was the youngest of three children born to J.T. and Rosebelle Tabor Jarrell Jr. of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Beckley.

Known affectionately as “Debbie,” Debra spent her childhood on Harper Road. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1970, she attended Marshall University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and graduated with a B.S. degree. When growing up, she and her family were members of First Christian Church, Courthouse Square. She was a lifetime member of the Single Action Shooting Society.

A resident of Palm Harbor since 1992, Debra was a former resident of Louisville, Ky. She was a division manager for Mabelline Cosmetics and a broker for Crystallite for the state of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, J.T. and Gladys Jarrell Sr. of Beckley; her maternal grandparents, Charles and Arizona Tabor of Naoma; and her uncle Jacob “Jake” Jarrell of Beckley.

In addition to being the beloved daughter of J.T. and Rosebelle, Debra was the loving wife of Paul Williams; special Mother to Lauren Christine Williams of Amelia Island, Fla.; and dear sister to James “Tom” Jarrell III and his wife, Susan, of New Port Richey and Phillip Jarrell and his wife, Judy, of Beckley. Other survivors include nephews and nieces, Todd Cornett and his wife, Rachel, of Beckley, Phillip Tabor “Tab” Jarrell of Cary, N.C., Kerri Beth Jarrell, a student at WVU, and Kim Keziah and her husband, Larry, of Monroe, N.C.; grandniece and nephews, Kristin Booth, Ethan Keziah, Tristan and Todd Cornett II.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before service Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Tab Jarrell, Todd Cornett, Rick Jarrell, Gary Dale Tabor, Dr. Robert Short and Chip Tabor.

Paul Floyd York

PIPESTEM — Paul Floyd York, 83, of Pipestem, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at VA Medical Center in Beckley.

Born Feb. 8, 1923, at Princeton, he was the son of the late James Walter and Sally Ann Belcher York.

Paul graduated from Princeton High School, entered the service to serve with the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the European Theater. For many years, he was employed by C&O Railroad, retiring as the shop foreman. He was an avid fox hunter, loved to fish and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Wellmen Mills York of Princeton; his children and their spouses, Patricia June York Carper of Huntington, Michael James and Deborah York of Mount Crawford, Va., and Von Ray and Barbara York Sr. of Shady Spring; siblings, Beatrice Ann York Phillips and husband, James Phillips, of Beckley, Perry and Margaret York of Newport News, Va., Paris and Louise York of Princeton and Ben York of Buena Vista, Va.; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at Burns Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, with Irving Ross and Troy Gilmore serving as speakers. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton.

Friends may visit with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts of love can be made to one’s favorite charity.

The York family is being served by Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center, Princeton.

Geneva Bolen

Geneva Bolen, 82, of Crab Orchard, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is serving the family.

Anthia E. Kiser Godbey

BLUEFIELD — Anthia E. Kiser Godbey, 89, of Bluefield, formerly of Beckley and Wayside, went to be with her Lord on the 14th of December 2005.

Born April 23, 1916, in Elkview, she was the daughter of the late Rob and Lillie Simmerly Kiser.

Mrs. Godbey was a member of the Bluefield CEOS Club. She was of the Baptist faith, a loving wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Denver E. Godbey; three sons, Ansell, Earl and Dale; and three brothers, Counts, Virgil, and Loomis.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include her brother and his wife, Herbert and June Kiser of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister and her husband, Ruth and Charles Stevens of Cocoa, Fla.; a daughter, Jean Mitchem and her husband, Troy, of Crab Orchard with their children, Debbie Hardison, Connie Fleming and Grant Mitchem; a son, Virgil and his wife, Frances, of Lindside and their children, Joey, Brian and Keith; a son, Robert and wife, Pamala, of Bluefield, with sons Robert Jr. and Michael; daughters-in-law, Elaine Godbey of Hinton, and children Dwayne, Bonnie, Reba, Greta and Cecilia, and Teresa Godbey of Shady Spring and children Linda Doughtery, Catherine Hicks, Carolyn Cook, Raymond E. Jr., Glenn, Robert D. and Jackie Gillenwaters; children of son Dale, Kenneth Godbey, Deanna Ward and Kami DeForrest; 44 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Visitation will be one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.

The family will receive friends after the service at 107 Meadow Lane, Crab Orchard.

Pallbearers will be Robert Godbey Jr., Michael Godbey, Brian Godbey, Kenneth Godbey, Glenn Godbey, Dewayne Godbey, Keith Godbey, Joseph Godbey, Robert D. Godbey and Grant Mitchem.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is serving the family.

Eva Halsey

PINEVILLE — Eva Halsey, 91, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, in a Beckley hospital.

Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, is serving the Halsey family.

U.S. Army Sgt. Brian C. Karim

NIMITZ — U.S. Army Sgt. Brian C. Karim, 22, husband of Rachel Lasley Karim, father of 2-year-old Janessa Karim of Nimitz and the son of Vera and Garland Adkins of Talcott, was killed in action in a roadside bombing on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, northwest of Baghdad, Iraq. Brian was a member of Taskforce Baghdad charged with security in Baghdad and surrounding areas.
