Wade H. ‘Jim’ Ballard III

PETERSTOWN —Wade H. “Jim” Ballard III, 81, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Princeton Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He and his twin brother, the late Emmett Jessee Ballard, were born Nov. 30, 1924, in Mullens to their attorney father, Sherman Hart Ballard, and South Carolinian mother, Maudie Mae Jessee Ballard.

After a few years in Charleston, the family moved to Peterstown, where his father opened a law office.

Mr. Ballard graduated from Peterstown High School, Class of 1943, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, and was discharged as a first lieutenant. He entered Washington and Lee University and graduated in 1951 with a Doctorate of Law, and began his law career in the law firm of his uncle, Col. Wade H. Ballard II, in Welch, from 1952 to 1954. He was an underwriter for Travelers Insurance in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1954 to 1957, and returned to Peterstown to join his father in the practice of law in March 1957. He was appointed U.S. attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia in 1968, and served until 1969. Mr. Ballard returned to private practice in 1969 until his retirement in November 2003.

He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of Peterstown Missionary Baptist Church, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Valeria “Val” Jancso Ballard; two sons, Dr. Dean W. Ballard of Nashville, Tenn., and Jeffery S. Ballard Sr. of Pulaski, Va.; a daughter, Laura Ann Doherty of Oshkosh, Wis.; grandchildren, Capt. Jason S. Ballard of Fort Drum, N.Y., presently serving in Afghanistan, Jeffery S. Ballard Jr. of Peterstown, Wade H. Ballard V and Reid Ballard of Pearisburg, Va., and Sherman D. Dunn and Paul S. Dunn of Pulaski; great-granddaughter, Sydney Ann Ballard of Peterstown; and many other nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Two sons preceded him in death, Wade H. Ballard IV and Bruce Stephen Ballard.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Friends may call one hour before service.

Graveside service and burial will follow at Peterstown cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the American Cancer Society.

James ‘Jim’ Madison Bostic

GLACE — James “Jim” Madison Bostic, 87, of Glace, died Thursday, June 29, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lillian McClure Carper

Lillian McClure Carper, 91, died Wednesday morning, June 28, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Margaret Ann, in Berlin, Md., under hospice care. She departed peacefully in her sleep.

Born March 26, 1915, at Grandview, she was the daughter of the late Robert T. “Bob” and Mary Ann “Mollie” Smith McClure. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a charter member of Grandview Christian Church and was a lifelong resident of the Grandview area until the age of 89, when due to failing health she moved to Eastern Shores, Md., to be near her daughter, her granddaughter, Judy, and her grandsons, Jon, Duaine and Dave, who were her caregivers in Maryland since 2004.

She belonged to the Beckley Art Group, and in her early years she was employed as a seamstress, doing alterations for the Rahalls, the Paynes and the Hud and Vogue dress shop in Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley J. Carper, in 1984; her sisters, Nellie McClure Ellison and Mary McClure Pitzer; her brother, Robert “Bill Bob” McClure; son-in-law, Winfred Maddy; and her grandson, James “Pete” Carper II.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Ann Maddy of Berlin, Md.; two sons, Robert L. “Bob” Carper and wife, Mary Katherine, of Arab, Ala., and James K. Carper and wife, Betty, of Grandview; six granddaughters, Judith Bogel of Berlin, Md., Dianne Kristoff of Aaron, Ohio, Debra Bulgrin of San Antonio, Texas, Denita Dairymtie of Arab, Ala., Sharon Segalas of Athens, Greece, and Lynda C. Gilkerson of Cross Lanes; three grandsons, Jon Maddy and Duaine Maddy, both of Berlin, Md., and David Carper of Detorville, Tenn.; 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Oscar Schwitzerlette officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the Grandview cemetery Perpetual Fund, 497 Scott Ridge Road, Beaver, WV 25813.

Kennith Daniel Cochran

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Kennith Daniel Cochran, 65, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, at his home in Winston-Salem following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 21, 1940, at Glen White, the son of the late Rev. Roy and Mildred Cochran.

Mr. Cochran was a retired Roadway truck driver. He also worked for Pilot Freight Carriers as a diesel mechanic for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 289 of Winston-Salem and the Moose Lodge.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cochran was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Roy Junior Cochran.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Naoma June Cochran; a son, John Daniel Cochran and wife, Annette, of Clemmons, N.C.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Danielle Cochran of Thomasville, N.C.; special nephew, Jason Terry of Winston-Salem.; two brothers, Charles Cochran of Glen View and Dallas Cochran and wife, Gloria, of Roanoke, Va.; and two sisters, Barbara Grose and husband, Conley, of Ridgeley, and Linda Vandall and husband, Eddie, of Crab Orchard.

There is no service scheduled at this time. The body was cremated per Mr. Cochran’s request.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Masonic Lodge No. 289 of Winston-Salem or to the Susan G. Komas Breast Cancer Foundation.

PETERSTOWN — Laura Katherine “Kathy” Dotson, 34, of Peterstown, died Thursday, June 29, 2006.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Word of Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, Rich Creek, Va. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Earl B. Harbison

Earl B. Harbison, 74, of Stanaford, died at his home Friday, June 30, 2006, after an extended illness.

Charles Lee Hart

BECKWITH — Charles Lee Hart, 74, of Beckwith, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at his residence.

Charles was born June 1, 1923, at Ansted, the son of the late Arnold H. and Nettie Neff Hart.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Imogene Hart.

Mr. Hart was of the Methodist faith and was retired from the military, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired in February 1993 from the Roswell Police Department in Roswell, N.M., where he was a member of the Lions Club.

Survivors include his sisters, Jo Ella Herbert of Fayetteville, Ruth Hogg of Ansted and Peggy Wills and husband, Bill, of Florence, Ala.; brothers, John and wife, Kay Hart, of New Vienna, Ohio, George Hart of Landrum, S.C., and Allen Hart and Felicia of Ansted; two stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with the Rev. Freddie Parkins officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret Willis Hundley

SCARBRO — Margaret Willis Hundley, 89, of Scarbro, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Hidden Valley Healthcare Center in Oak Hill.

Born Oct. 29, 1916, in Oswald, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Lillie Monway Willis.

Mrs. Hundley was a homemaker who loved to quilt. She was a member of Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill, and Scarbro Methodist Church.

Her husband, Obert Herman Hundley, on Aug. 4, 1975; three sisters, Marie Richards, Lillie Wood and Rosie Harvey; three brothers, William, John and Earl; and a granddaughter, Chrissy Hundley, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Herman Hundley Jr., and wife, Beverly, of Oak Hill; a daughter, Margaret Woodard of Oak Hill; a brother, Harry Willis and wife, Ann, of Hardy, Va.; a sister, Florence Banks of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kenneth Woodard and wife, Marcia, Laura Hundley and Sarah Pauley and husband, Brian; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Frederick William Kretzer

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Frederick William Kretzer, born June 18, 1934, in New York City, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at his home in White Sulphur Springs following a long illness. He was cared for by his physician, Donald R. Rollins, M.D., of the Greenbrier Clinic, the Greenbrier division of Kanawha Hospice Care, and his family.

Following graduation from Grove City College in 1956, Frederick served in the U.S. Army, and then joined his father, William Kretzer, at the Kretzer Construction Co., Inc., in Flushing, N.Y. The firm engaged in industrial and commercial construction around the world. In 1962, the firm transitioned into K-Way Associates, founded in Phoenix, Ariz., for the purpose of land acquisition and property development. K-Way specialized in the construction, leasing and management of shopping centers.

In the year 2000, realizing achievement and success, Frederick moved with his wife and greyhounds to a quiet life on the grounds of The Greenbrier hotel in rural West Virginia.

To all who knew him in business, friendship and within family, he was a good man, and true.

To celebrate Frederick’s life and honor his memory, he requested that a gift be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc. or Arizona Adopt a Greyhound Inc. of Phoenix.

Frederick is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son, Gregory of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and his sister, Nancy Mitchell of South Reading, Vt.

Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Reginald Lilly

Reginald Lilly, 80, of Beaver, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

He was the son of the late Lewis Lilly and Lora Harris Lilly.

Reginald had served with the U.S. Marines.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Mae Cloum; and brother, Orla Lilly.

Those left to cherish his memory include sons, David Alan Lilly of Norcross, Ga., Howard Wayne Lilly of Oxford, Ga., William Lee Lilly of Midlothian, Texas, and James Lilly of Indiana; sisters, Mabel Pennington of Beaver, Delila McBride of White Oak, Marie Skelton of Shady Spring and Virginia Wilson of Arizona; special nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Delvin Ewell officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

George Raymond Martin

George Raymond Martin, of Sophia, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Hospice Care Center in Akron, Ohio.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; son, George R. Martin II; second wife, Roberta; sisters, Lucille Wiseman and LaVerne Hinte; and brother, Raliegh.

He is survived by his daughter, Karan (Ron-E) Overcasher; granddaughter, Veronica; great-grandson, Jason; brothers, Troy (Charlotte) and Roy Dale (Wanda); sister, Lorene Goddard; and friend, Ramona Massey.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Calvary Baptist Church, 820 White Pond Drive, Akron, with Pastor Doug Shoup officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
