Charles C. Hawley Jr.

Charles C. Hawley Jr. 86, of Daniels, passed away Friday, April 21, 2006.

Born Dec. 20, 1919, at Glen Daniel, he was the son of the late Charles C. Hawley Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Wall Hawley.

Mr. Hawley was an avid fisherman. He turned a loved hobby into a business which he was owner and operator of — Charlie’s Jigs. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Hawley served in World War II in the Air Force and was also a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawley was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Hawley, and three sisters, Juanita Honaker, Ella Jean Allen and Avalene Waybright.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Helen Arlene Metrick Hawley, two sons, James E. Starr and wife, Betty, of Santa Fe, N.M. and Charles C. Hawley III of Shady Spring; two daughters, Mary A. “Patty” Wilson of Daniels and Daphne A. Jessup and husband, Larry, of Daniels; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Dennis Burks officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will include Marvin Petti, David McAllister, Sam McAllister, Rick Carrico, Michael Cochran, David Honaker, Gary Perdue and Larry Jessup.

Friends may call one hour before service today at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Pearl Keffer

Hazel Pearl Keffer, 79, of Beckley, formerly of Crab Orchard, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

Born at Eccles on March 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Zebede Smith and Daisy Belle Friley Ring.

She was a member of Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren, and had lived at Crab Orchard for most of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Keffer, and a son, Jackie Lee Keffer.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Basham and husband, Jerry Basham Sr., of Fenton, Mich.; a sister, Rosie Ring of Oak Hill; three grandchildren, Dallas Keffer, Jackie Basham and Jerry Basham Jr.; and four great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Timothy Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Beulah Layne

Beulah Layne, 66, of 124 Waybright St., Beckley, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006.

Frank G. McClung

PICKAWAY — Frank G. McClung, 91, of Pickaway, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 28, 1914, at Fort Spring, the son of the late William E. and Relda Burdette McClung.

Mr. McClung spent his early life in Greenbrier County, later moving to Monroe County. He attended Greenbrier County schools, graduating from Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte in 1934. He was a graduate of West Virginia University in the field of argiculture. While attending there, he was a member of the WVU livestock judging team. He taught vocational agriculture for one year at Greenbrier High School. He was a very successful farmer in Greenbrier and Monroe counties, residing at Lane Lee Farm, Hillsdale Road, at his death. He was a member of Fairview Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate Sibold McClung, in January 2001; two brothers, Thomas H. and William H. McClung; and a sister, Wanda McClung.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Beckett and husband, Dale, of Pickaway; two sons, Lee and wife, Deborah, of Pickaway and David and wife, Kathy, of Point Pleasant; three grandchildren, Lisa Lassare and husband Mike, Jennifer McClung Ridgeway and husband, Anthony, and Brock McClung; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Lassare. Also, thanks go to his continuous caregiver, Susan Ridgeway, Home Care Plus, and “Brownie,” his faithful dog.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home, Union, with the Rev. Mike Ford officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon cemetery, Pickaway.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today and the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be sent to Fairview Christian Church, c/o Phoebe McGuire, P.O. Box 633, Union, WV 24983.

Pallbearers will be Greg Sibold, John Fullen, Brad Stuart, Don Sibold, Floyd Fullen and Johnny Tomlinson. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny McClung, Sam Rogers, Roger Elmore, Vernon Elmore, David Pritt, Jim Scott, Bill Sibold and Danny Huffman.

Janice Pearl McGrady

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Janice Pearl McGrady, 71, of Port St. Lucie, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in Port St. Lucie following a long illness.

James F. Miller, 79, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006.

Jeanette L. Miller

SISSONVILLE — Jeanette L. Miller, 84, formerly of Peterstown, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 21, 2006, at the home of her son in Sissonville.

She was born Jan. 15, 1922, at Woodbay, and was the daughter of the late Clark and Helen Linkenhoker Lester.

Jeanette was a homemaker, a faithful member of North Hills Baptist Church in Sissonville and a former member of Peterstown Missionary Baptist Church.

She lived a good life and will be remembered by her hard work, her kindness to others and her faithfulness to her church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Randy, and oldest son, Ted.

She is survived by her two sons, Jerry Miller and wife, Freda, of Roanoke, Va., and Rick Miller and wife, Linda, of Sissonville, and her late son’s wife, Mary Ellen Miller, of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Faye Smith of Havelock, N.C., and Ruth Thompson of Rich Creek, Va.; a brother, Ralph Lester of Lorton, Va.; sisters-in-law, Betty Foster and Ruby Johansen of Midlothian, Va.; brother-in-law, Jim Miller of Princeton; seven grandchildren, Suellen, Nathan, Elizabeth, Rachael and husband, Dominic, Beth and husband, David, Tim and wife, Kelli, and Heather and husband, Mike; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Larissa, Blake, Brad, Morgan, Dakota, Isabella, Emma, Sarah and Dawson.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Pastor Mike Harper and the Rev. Jonathan Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kanawha Valley Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25063, your local church missionary fund or Habitat for Humanity in memory of Jeanette Miller.

Oza Mullens Sr.

KOPPERSTON — Oza Mullens Sr., 95, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006, in a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 24, 1911, in Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Tom Rutherford and Sarah Jane Mullens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Justice Mullens; two sons, Melvin Mullens and Tommy Mullens; three brothers; a sister; two grandchildren, Johnny Gardner and Timothy Mock; and a great-grandchild, Tony Ryan Aliff.

Mr. Mullens was of the Baptist faith. He worked for Eastern Associated Coal, Kopperston No. 2 Mines, and was a member of Local Union 7604. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.

Survivors include six sons, Oza Mullens Jr. and his wife, Joann, of Kopperston, Poza Mullens and his wife, Geneva, of Oceana, Leland Mullens of Fairdale, Pinkey Mullens and his wife, Cathy, of Glen Fork, Bobby Joe Mullens of Kopperston and Frankie Mullens and his wife, Loretta, of Dothan, Ala.; four daughters, Judy Heddleson and her husband, Rich, of Cambridge, Ohio, and Carrie Blum, Doris Ondrey and Maggie Kosacs, all of Youngstown, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Algie Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Kopperston Community cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Dorsey H. Rogers

GASTON, N.C. — Dorsey H. Rogers, 78, formerly of Summers County, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at his home.

Born July 29, 1927, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Dorsey M. and Lura Lawrence Rogers.

Mr. Rogers was a graduate of Hinton High School, was a former employee of Virginia Electric Power Co. and was a retired electrician with the North Carolina Power Co. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Noah, Ray, Stanley, Claude, Cyrus and Garland “Dutch” Rogers; and a sister, Ruby Wallace.

Survivors include a sister, Hallie Foster of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Katie Rogers of Hines; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Betty Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Baptist Church cemetery, Forest Hill.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the funeral home.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Barbara Lenora Smith

Barbara Lenora Smith, 81, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Born Sept. 14, 1924, at Glen Morrison in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late O.A. and the late Anna Smith.

Miss Smith was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Raleigh County Chapter No. 18. She served in the U.S. WAVES in World War II. In 1972 and 1973 she was the senior vice commander of the DAV, State of West Virginia, in 1975 to 1980 she was the WAVES department representative for the VA Medical Center in Beckley, 1979-1980 she was the deputy chief of staff for the West Virginia DAV, 1980-1983 she was the state hospital WAVES chairman for the DAV, State. Mrs. Smith was the commander of Chapter No. 18 for 18 years and held the office of adjunct secretary treasurer for 14 years and the adjunct secretary for 3 years. She was the owner Barbara’s Arts and Crafts at Piney View for 14 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four sisters, Marcell Brakefield of Trafford, Ala., Lourel Horman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Phyllis Graham of Fisherville, Va., and Elizabeth Bragg of Flint, Mich.; two brothers, Fred Smith of Mabscott and John Smith of Mahnton, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be noon today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Hilda Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends gathered with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

QUINWOOD — Richard Smith, 53, of Marfrance, passed away Saturday evening, April 22, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.
