Alvin E. Lucas, 81, of Slab Fork, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.
Born March 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Lace and Katie Shelton Lucas.
Alvin was a good artist and wood craftsman, and he was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Lucas was retired from Slab Fork Coal Co. with 40 years service. He was a member of UMWA Local 6108 and a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Lucas; a son, Douglas Lucas; and a daughter, Darlene Lucas Olson.
Those left to cherish his loving memory include a son, Roy Lucas and wife, Sandra, of Sophia; a daughter, Kathy Lucas of Slab Fork; 10 grandchildren, Roy Lucas II, Alvin Keith Lucas, Michael Paul Lipford, Keri R. Lipford, Jamie Olson, Jonathan Olson, Jeannie Olson, Douglas Scott Lucas and Chad Lucas; and four great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Rev. Thomas Anderson officiating.
Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Pallbearers will be John Lawson, Lewis Chambers, Bill McMillion, John Olson, Russell Bailey and Jamie Olson.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Wilbur Ray McKinney
Wilbur Ray McKinney was born June 24, 1934, and at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, the Lord said to Wilbur, “Welcome home, my good and faithful servant.”
Wilbur dedicated 41 years of his life to serving the Lord and spreading his word. He fought a good fight and now is enjoying his rewards. He was an avid bowler and loved riding his 4-wheeler. He was a self-employed contractor and former owner of Valley Drive Exxon. Wilbur was a member of Amigo Missionary Baptist Church and former minister with Regular Baptist Church for 41 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kelly and Virgie McKinney; brothers, Giles and Elmet McKinney; and sisters, Garnet Mills and Doris Shrewsbury.
Those left to cherish his loving memory include his wife of 51 years, Janet Shrewsbury McKinney; his sons, Clifford McKinney and his wife, Tammy, of Beckley, Perry McKinney and his wife, Sheila, of Beaver, Gary McKinney and his wife, Shiela, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Tony McKinney and his wife, Janet, of Barkers Ridge; grandchildren, Candace Henderson and husband, Bill, of Martinsburg, Amber McKinney of Arlington, Va., Jason McKinney of Barkers Ridge, Kelli Myers and husband, Patrick, of Morgantown, Tabitha Lusk and husband, Jerry, of Barkers Ridge, Sarah McKinney of Virginia Beach, Blaine McKinney of Beckley and Clint Houck and wife, Andrea, of Daniels; great-grandchildren, Sydney Lusk, Conner Lusk, Taylor McKinney, Ben Stafford, Sarah Houck and Emily Houck; a brother, Russell McKinney of Amigo; and three sisters, Joyce Lynch of Beckley, Haley Bond of Stotesbury and Hester Mills of Basin.
Wilbur was greatly loved and will be missed by many. We look forward to seeing him again in Heaven.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Patrick Haynes and Pastor Curtis England officiating. Granddaughter Amber McKinney will be reading a special memorial to her grandfather. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be his four sons, Clifford, Perry, Gary and Tony McKinney.

Ann P. Little Mullens
ALLEN JUNCTION — Ann P. Little Mullens, 83 of Allen Junction, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at home following an extended illness.
Born on Dec. 22, 1922, at Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Newman L. and Bonnie Mullis Little.
Ann attended First Pentecostal Church of Mullens. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin F. Mullens; a son, Tex Wayne Mullens; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Foxley; a sister, Earlene Reedy; and brothers, Newman L. and Ralph Little.
Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Dennis F. Mullens and wife, Jackie, of Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter with whom she lived, Pandie Mullens-Jordan of Allen Junction; grandchildren, Nikki Linzalone of Puyallup, Wash., Paula Mullens-Shelton and husband, Keith, of Pierpont, Wash., Dawn Foxley and husband, Nathan, and Dennis F. Herbert L. Roope
HINTON — Herbert L. Roope, 80, of 3019 New River Road, died at 6:18 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1925, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Billy Byrd and Virginia Iris Hundley Roope.
Mr. Roope was a retired mechanic and car salesman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Bronze Star with Meritorious Service. Herb was a people person; he never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Roope Becker, and a cousin who was reared as a brother, Lewis Pierce.
Survivors include his wife, Justine “Teeny” Bennett Roope; two sons, Randy Roope of Welch and Greg Roope and wife, Carla, of Elbert; six daughters, Ginger Radford and husband, John, of Blacksburg, Va., Mary Dawn Lockhart and husband, Wallace, of Welch, Kim Grubb of Welch, Carmen Hamm and husband, Donnie, of Hinton, Pam Fox Johnson and husband, Paul, of Princeton and Debbi Fox Rash and husband, Marty, of Nashville, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Bishop Cecil Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Adkins cemetery near Sandstone Falls.

Fernia Mae Shrewsbury
HILLTOP — Fernia Mae Shrewsbury, 91, of Hilltop, died in an Oak Hill hospital Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.
Born June 14, 1914, at Lester, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Emma Tyree Smith.
Mrs. Shrewsbury was a retired Raleigh County school teacher for the Raleigh County Board of Education. She was a member of First Christian Church and sang in the church choir for many years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and the Chaminade Music Club.
Mrs. Shrewsbury was a Red Cross volunteer and a former member of the Salvation Army board of directors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. L. Evert Shrewsbury; stepchildren, L. Evert Shrewsbury Jr. and Mary Rose Gates; brother, Donald Smith; and sisters, Dorothy Baugues, Thelma Kyle, Nora Triggs and Margaret Williams.
Survivors include her daughter, Fernia R. Shrewsbury of Belchertown, Mass.; stepgranddaughter, Ellen Anderson and her husband, Jim, of Flat Top; stepgrandson, L.A. Gates and his wife, Lou, of Flat Top; four stepgreat-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Donald R. Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Vance Andrew Stroupe
PRINCETON — Vance Andrew Stroupe, 86, of 311 Union Drive (Lilly Grove), Princeton, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born June 19, 1919, at Havaco, McDowell County, he was the son of the late James Walter and Marion Dickens Stroupe.
He was a graduate of Welch High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the U.S. Army. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired employee for Semet Solvent Coal Co. at Capels with more than 34 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA.
He and his late wife, Thelma, raised their seven children in the Lilly Grove area of Princeton. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Thelma L. Hamm Stroupe; five half siblings, Gladys Waller and Swift, Hobert, Lawrence and Everett Stroupe; two brothers, Jim and Paul Stroupe; and two sisters, Helen Lusk and Margie Green.
Survivors include his seven children, Mary Lou Pencarinha and husband, Tom, of Princeton, Kenneth Stroupe and wife, Kathy, of Charlotte, N.C., Ronald Stroupe and wife, Brenda, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jerry Stroupe and wife, Sharon, of Princeton, Kathy Ball and husband, Bill, of Talcott, Debbie Poole and husband, John, of Glenwood and Larry Stroupe and wife, Beverly, of Roughmont, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Bobby Stroupe of Oceana, Billy Stroupe and wife, Ina, of Brunswick, Md., and Don Stroupe of Beckley.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Burns Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton.

Ernest Marvin Walker
OCEANA — Ernest Marvin Walker, loving husband, father, grandfather and best friend, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at the age of 51 years, 9 months and 28 days at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, with his loving family by his side following a courageous battle with C and S clotting disorder.
Ernest loved to fish, enjoyed basketball and loved NASCAR. He loved spending time with his family, especially his only granddaughter, Kaylee Leann, whom he loved very much. Ernest was a member of Crany Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized Oct. 28, 1973. He was also an active member of Delilah Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and helped with the youth. He was a member of Local Union 1503. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Born March 14, 1954, at Crany, he was the son of the late Clayton and Minnie B. Elswick Walker.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Marvin Walker; a daughter, Kristi Lynn Walker; a brother, Leonard C. Walker; and his father-in-law, Shelby Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife and best friend of 30 wonderful years, Teresa L. Brown Walker; a daughter, Tracy Walker Reed and her husband, Joe, of Oceana; his precious granddaughter, Kaylee Leann Reed “Cottontop”; mother-in-law, Helen Brown “Ma Kettle” of Oceana; two brothers, the Rev. James A. Walker and his wife, Kathleen, of Oceana and Raymond C. Walker and his wife, Betty, of Keyrock; five sisters, Glenna Toler and her husband, Rev. Eual, of Oceana, Sybil Rose of Oceana, Joyce Griffith and her husband, Adrain, of Oceana, Bernice Giles and her husband, Rev. Roy, of Gordonsville, Va., and Elizabeth Linton and her husband, Darrell, of Dunnellton, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends.
A celebration of Ernest’s life will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Revs. Rick Chester, James Walker and Raymond Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
