Clifford ‘Joe’ Leek

HICO — Clifford “Joe” Leek, of Hico, was pronounced dead at Summersville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006.

He was born Jan. 17, 1927, at New Martinsville.

He attended Victory Baptist Church of Ansted, where he served as a trustee. He was a retired steel worker and served in the armed forces.

Survivors include his wife, Flora Leek; three daughters, Sharon Tawney of Doylestown, Ohio, Brenda Leek of Durham, N.C., and Cheryl Burr of Russellville; and several brothers and sisters, addresses unknown.

There will be no memorial service.

David ‘Spider’ Marsh

MULLENS — David Lee “Spider” Marsh, 70, of Highland Avenue, Mullens, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, following a long illness.

Born April 8, 1936, at Maybeury, he was the son of the late Charles Clinton Marsh Sr. and Catherine Gladys Eanes Marsh.

David was a retired conductor for Norfolk and Western (Southern) with 33 years of service. He attended Otsego Bible Chapel where he was baptized on Aug. 10, 2003. In his leisure, he enjoyed helping out at Ray Wells Preowned Auto. He also enjoyed reconditioning and selling used vehicles, photography and spending time with his grandson, Logan. He was a 46-year resident of Mullens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Clinton Marsh Jr. and Richard Arlan Marsh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janice Lee Nuckolls Marsh; two daughters, Lisa Marsh Hancock and her husband, Rodger, of Oak Hill and Sherri Marsh Nociti of Mullens; a son, Barry Marsh and his wife, Angela, of Mullens; a sister, Shelia Marie Phillips of Roanoke, Va.; a sister-in-law, Peggy Marsh of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Madonna Ann Marsh, Logan Lee Marsh, Chelsey Rowe, Brittney, Tiffany, Rodger and Shawn Hancock; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with Pastors Mike Endreson, Mike Cook and David Pollock officiating.

Friends may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In keeping with his wishes, David will be cremated.

Ruth M. Crook Meadows

Ruth M. Crook Meadows, 79, of White Oak, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, following a short illness.

Born on April 11, 1927, at Pluto, she was the daughter of the late Pascal Meadows and Willa Harvey Meadows.

Mrs. Meadows was a homemaker. She was a member of Open Door Church at Shady Spring. She had lived at White Oak since 1955.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Welton Crook; an infant daughter, Phyllis; a brother, Earl Meadows; and sisters, Orvy Richmond, Ora Nell Bennett, Irene Graham and Macil Haines.

Survivors include a son, Normeth Crook and wife, Judy, of Craigsville; a sister, Maxine Crook of Daniels; granddaughter, Angela Fox of Cool Ridge; and special friend, Paul Carpenter of Pence Springs.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Calfee Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Rick Clark, Brice Crook, James Richardson, Daniel Keaton, Alan Butler and Everette Bennett.

Joan Carol Hanson Moore

Joan Carol Hanson Moore passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Moore was affectionately known as “Ninny” and “Snapper Joanie.” She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, family and friendship.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil Moore of Hahira, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Virgil Moore II and Stacey Moore of Valdosta, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Terry Hawke of Hahira; six grandchildren, Joshua Hawke, Samuel Hawke, Shelbie Moore, Cole Moore, Saralyn Moore and Kyle Moore; a brother, Samuel Hanson of New Jersey; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Larry Jennings of Covington, Ga., and Bobby and Phyllis Moore of Valdosta; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her mother, Euva Lee Fogus Hanson; her father, Stacey Hanson; her twin sister, June Jennings; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pat and Gertrude Moore; and two brothers, Frank Hanson and Richard Hanson.

Memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Calvin and the Rev. Tim Vanlandingham officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.

Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta, is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Edward Morgan

RONCEVERTE — Douglas Edward Morgan, 46, died Monday Nov. 6, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Caldwell Pentecostal Holiness Church. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

John Robert ‘Bob’ Pitzer

HINTON — John Robert “Bob” Pitzer, 78, of Hinton, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born on May 20, 1928, in Monroe County, he was the son of the late Fleet Ellen McCormick Pitzer.

He was a former employee of Hinton Taxi Co. and was involved in the Evangelistic Outreach Ministry and a devout Christian.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Ray “Bobby” Pitzer, and a brother, James Pitzer.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Peggy Cales and husband, Roger, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Mrs. Linda Caudle and husband, Rick, of Forest Hill, two sisters, Hester Berry of Bridgeton, N.J., and Mildred Lowery of Hilldale; a brother, Roger Pitzer of Marlinton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Bishop James Brookes officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery, Ballengee.

Friends may call noon until time of service Friday.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Stacy Crockett Scales

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Stacy Crockett Scales, 86, of 121 Patriot’s Crook, Martinsville, King’s Grant Community, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at King’s Grant Health Care.

Born in Bluefield, Va., on July 24, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Robert Kemp Crockett and Rose Stacy Crockett. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Kemp Crockett Jr., and a grandchild.

Mrs. Scales worked at IBM in the systems service department from 1941 to 1942 and retired in 1983 from CONTACT (Crisis Intervention Telephone Service) as executive director after 10 years service. She was a charter member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Martinsville, where she was a past president of the Women of the Church. Mrs. Scales graduated from Graham High School, Bluefield, Va., and attended Virginia Intermont College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., where she received a B.S. degree in commerce. She was a sustaining member and past president of the Charity League and past president and librarian of Entre Nous Book Club. She was also a member of several bridge clubs.

Survivors include her husband, J. Shelton Scales; daughter, Judith S. Peterson and her husband, Pete, of True; sons, Joseph S. Scales of Cameron Park, Calif., Kemp C. “Kit” Scales of Titusville, Pa., and Philip N. Scales of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, June C. Keys and her husband, William, of Greensboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Martinsville, with the Rev. Ken Hughes officiating, assisted by Dr. Clarence Reaser. Inurnment will be at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville.

Respecting the wishes of the deceased, the family suggests, in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation Inc., 1505 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Norris Funeral Services and Crematory, Martinsville, is serving the Scales family.

Jerry Lee Scott

Jerry Lee Scott, 53, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 22, 1952, in Beckley, he was the son of Norma Dixon Scott of Crab Orchard and the late Leroy Scott.

Mr. Scott was disabled employee of Sophia Electric as a general manager. He was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church. He was a Crab Orchard resident all of his life.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Scott.

Survivors besides his mother include his wife, Patricia Crouch Scott; a son, Jerry Lee Scott II and wife, Mary, of Flat Top Lake; stepchildren, James Redden Jr. and wife, Vicky, of Prince and Kevin Redden of Piney View; brothers, Gary Wayne Scott of Glenville and Ronald Eugene Scott and wife, Rhonda, of Beckley; special grandchild, Trinity Skye Redden; and two other step grandchildren, Olivia and Shane Redden.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Lyle Zickafoose and the Rev. Harold Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Zina ‘Snuffy’ Smith Jr.

Zina “Snuffy” Smith Jr., 79, of Piney View, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006.

Born Feb. 7, 1927, he was the son of the late Zina Smith Sr. and Gladys Williams Smith.

Zina was an avid fisherman and an outdoor enthusiast. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 41 years Lynda Faye Smith; sons Leonard Smith and wife Nancy, of Hinton, Robert Clayton Smith and wife, Sandy, of Lanark and Troy Scott Smith of Shady Spring; daughter, Miranda Hope Smith and longtime friend, Ben Pitt, of Stanaford; stepson, Jeffrey David Huffman of Beckley; and 11 grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Lonnie Greer officiating. Burial will follow at Lilly-Crews cemetery, Nimitz.

Pallbearers will be Roger Smith, Benjamin Pitt, Larry Wiseman, Gene Wiseman, David Binion and Freddie Hudson.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Delford Jennings Ward

HIX — Delford Jennings Ward, 68, of Hix, died at 6:22 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at the home of his son with family by his side, smiling as he entered glory.

Born on April 25, 1938, at Hix, he was the son of the late Howard and Macil Carter Ward.

He was a member of Ramp Holiness Church and a retired timberman. He cherished the outdoors and cut firewood as his hobby.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kreg Ward; a brother, James Ward; and two sisters, Neva Ward and Dorothy Ward.

He is survived by a son, Randy Ward and wife, Jacqueline, of Ramp; a daughter, Kim Ward and husband, Dino, of Hix; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Randy, Joseph, Jacob, Elisabeth, Kelly and Shelly Ward; two brothers, Tooney Ward of Hilldale and Clifford Ward of Judson; two sisters, Edith Ward Watts of Oak Hill and Juanita Ward Tickle of Jumping Branch; several nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart; and four special friends, William and Maurien Bragg and Doug Ayers and Tommy Ward.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Ramp Holiness Church with Rev. Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Carter cemetery, Hix.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, Hinton.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Ward, Hershel Hayward Grimmett, Ray Bragg, Doug Ayers Sr., Doug Ayers Jr. and Luther Bragg.

Honorary pallbearer is Lloyd Dick.
