CANTON, Ohio — Alice Grace Clark, 84, passed away Dec. 16, 2005, in Canton.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Richmond Chapel Church in Ramsey. Burial in the church cemetery.

Gloria Clay

Gloria Clay, 65, of Cleveland, Ohio, a native of Leevale, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005.

Born July 4, 1940, at Leevale, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Denny Lafferty and Esther Wills.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas F. Clay; two sons, James Clay and wife, Camy, and Thomas L. Clay and wife, Janet; and children, Cindy, Thomas J., Derrek and Sonya; and three sisters, Maxine, Corena and Glenna.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Herl and Donald.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at Walter Martens and Sons Funeral Home, 9811 Denison Ave., Cleveland, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Riverside cemetery.

Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Hazel Louise Cook

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — Hazel Louise Cook, 69, formerly of Arnett, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, due to a long term illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1936, at Arnett, she was a daughter of the late Ash and Wilma Brown Cook.

Hazel attended Mount View Elementary and Marsh Fork High School.

She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Cozart; a daughter, Terri; and two infant sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Ash Craft of Chicago, Ill., and ten sisters, Ann Daniel of Bolt, Mary Whiting of Daniels, Goldie Agosta of Largo, Fla., Diane Pierce of MacArthur, Sue Galiczynski of Cleveland, Ohio, Iva Brand of North Vernon, Ind., Gail Clay, Sissy Cook and Kathy Alpaugh of Arnett and Ellen Stover of Oak Hill; and three brothers, Bill Wills of Swansboro, N.C., Bob Wills of MacArthur and Buck Dameron of Virginia. She is also survived by her father’s wife, Nina Cook, of Arnett; and a host of nieces and nephews.

At her request, Hazel’s body was donated to Indianapolis University for scientific study.

A memorial will be held at a later date.

Elva Canterbury Harrah

LEWISBURG — Elva Canterbury Harrah, 94, died 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19, 2005, at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 16, 1911, she was the daughter of the late A.B. and Dessie Cunningham Canterbury of Pax.

Mrs. Harrah graduated from Oak Hill High School, attended New River College at Montgomery and received her B.S. Degree in Education from Concord College at Athens. She taught in both White Sulphur Springs and Lewisburg Elementary Schools, having retired in 1973.

She held a membership in both Greenbrier County and West Virginia Education Associations, as well as the National Association. Following her retirement, she became a member of the West Virginia Retired School Employees and the local Retired School Employees Association.

She held membership in the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and belonged to Circle No. 1. She loved cooking and entered contests, one of which was the Archway Cookie Contest held at the State Fair of West Virginia, Fairlea, which not only named her entry as first place in the State Fair, but also first place in the National Archway Cookie Contest. She also participated in the yearly Bazaar held at the church, baking pies, cookies, cakes, etc. She was a teacher, homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.

Mrs. Harrah was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Glen Harrah, in 1989; and two brothers, Henry Canterbury of Mullens and William Canterbury of Wayne.

Survivors include her children: a son, Glen R. Harrah and wife, Carol, of Fairfax, Va.; a daughter, Barbara Hayes and husband, Joe, of Lewisburg; a son, David A. Harrah of Beckley; a daughter, Patty Dillon and husband, Rob, of Ronceverte; seven grandchildren, Brenda Duce, Shannon Harrah, Jay Hayes, Leighla Dillon, Andrew Harrah, Jesse Dillon and Emelia Dillon; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Danielle Duce; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Joseph S. Kenaston and the Rev. Elizabeth Yost officiating.

The family will receive friends 12 noon until time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Rosewood cemetery.

Margaret S. Wicks Herring

Margaret S. Wicks Herring, daughter of the late John F. Wicks Sr. and A. Virginia Wicks, was born June 25, 1943, at Beckley. She departed this life Dec. 17, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

She was a 1961 graduate of Stratton High School, Beckley, and attended Bluefield State College, Bluefield. Her work history included a tour of duty with the Women’s Army Corp that resulted in assignments in Alabama, New York and Okinawa, Japan. She continued her career through employment with the General Services Administration in Washington, D.C., the Department of Energy (D.O.E.) in Aiken, S.C., and Oak Ridge, Tenn., and BWXT-Y12 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She retired from D.O.E. in 2004, but remained active in community affairs. She was an active member and former church clerk of Oak Valley Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, Tenn. She was a dedicated mother who placed her faith in God and maintained strong family ties.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Anthony Herring of Washington, D.C., and Kenneth Maurice Herring of Knoxville, Tenn.; mother, Virginia Wicks of Beckley; two sisters, Joan Oxendine and husband, Bill, of Mitchellville, Md., and Frances Wicks Oxendine of Sumter, S.C.; two brothers, John Wicks Jr. of Beckley, and Dwight Wicks and wife, Leetha, of Atlanta, Ga.; six nephews and four nieces, and her special friend and “adopted sister” Kowetha Davidson; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Margaret enjoyed people and life. She will be missed by many and remembered by all whose life she touched with her warm smile and kind heart.

Service was held at Oak Valley Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The family will receive visitors at the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2005. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

The arrangements in Knoxville, Tenn., were made by Unity Mortuary.

Brady Jean St. John Lucas

Brady Jean St. John Lucas, 77, of Beckley, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, after a brave and determined struggle with cancer.

Born Sept. 9, 1928, at Hemphill/Welch, she was the daughter of the late Roger Holt St. John and Irene Ruth St. John of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Raymond Lucas; and eldest daughter, Leslie Rae Lucas Cash of Chicago; also two brothers, Cody Herman St. John of Chicago and Arnold Dudney (Doug) St. John of McDowell County; a sister, Margaret St. John Alley of West Chicago; and a nephew, Wayne Woodson Alley.

Survivors include two daughters, Renee Lucas Halstead of North Carolina and Rebecca R. Lucas of Beckley; a grandson, Jeremy Kane Pack of U.S. Marine Corps and wife, Tina Pack; a granddaughter, Beth Cash Robertson of Chicago and husband, Scott Robertson; a sister, Hilda St. John Warner of Beckley; also cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law in West Virginia and other states.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley, with the Rev. Charles (Butch) Acord officiating. Special music will be sung by Tina Pack. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends and family may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Serving as pallbearers are Jeremy Pack, James Davis, John Phillabaum, Scott Robertson and other family members.

Beulah ‘Bea’ Miller (nee Harvey)

Beulah Nelle Miller (nee Harvey) passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at age 70. She will be greatly missed, especially by devoted children, Karen of Akron, Ohio, and Bill of Silver Spring, Md., as well as brother, Carl of Tampa, Fla., and many dear family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by beloved husband, Cecil (Bill); parents, the Rev. Willis E. and Virginia Harvey; brother, Jim; and sisters, Lois and Linda.

Born Oct. 16, 1935, at Beckley, she resided there until marrying in 1954 and moving to the Cleveland area where she worked at the American Greeting Company and Halle Company. She relocated to West Salem, Ohio, and was a dedicated employee of Freelander’s Department Store in Wooster until retiring in 1995. Most recently, she was a resident of White Pond Villa in Akron.

A service will be 11 a.m. today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made in remembrance of her to the American Diabetes Association.

Patty Naylor

Patty Naylor, 64, of Surveyor, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends after a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Born May 4, 1941, at Posey, she was the daughter of Ruby Milam of Saxon and the late Jethro Webb.

Mrs. Naylor was a homemaker. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Monroe, N.C. She had made her home in Charlotte, N.C., for many years, returning to Raleigh County the past seven years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Daniel; her second husband, Ken Naylor; a brother, Jerry Webb; and a sister, Geraldine Vipperman.

Besides her mother, other survivors include her children, Dave Daniel of Beckley, Rocky Daniel and wife, Donna, of North Carolina, and Sandy Scott of Florida; grandchildren, Dennis Scott and wife, Lou, of Daniels, Amber Scott of Virginia, Toni Daniel of Beckley, Wesley Daniel and wife, Nicole, of North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Tyler Williams, Andrew Williams, Tristen Scott, Jeremiah Scott, Virginia Daniel and Damian Daniel; brother, Charles Cook and wife, Ellen, of Toledo, Ohio; sisters, Ernestine Aliff of Saxon, and Rita Clay and husband, Doug, of Cleveland, Ohio; sister-in-law, Shirley Webb of Beckley; special cousin, June Milam of Oceana; and special friends, Leroy and Lucy White of Surveyor. She was special to all who knew her.

Service will be 12 noon Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. Sandra Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Scott, Denny Vipperman, Leroy White, Timo Bowers, Mark Hutchinson and Mike Farley.

Bernice I. Suttle Bennett

A loving mother and grandmother and special friend to those who knew her, Bernice I. Suttle Bennett, 81, of Mount Hope, went to be with the Lord after a long battling illness with cancer on Sunday, May 6, 2007, at her home.

Born Nov. 29, 1925, at Sanger, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Alice Kelly Suttle.

Bernice was a member of the Maple Fork Baptist Church, Maple Fork, where she was active in the Women’s Circle.

Three brothers, Cecil, Ernest and Carlos Suttle, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn S. Treadway and husband, Tim, of Prosperity; two sons, Bill Bennett and wife, Carol, of Mount Hope, and Blaine Bennett and wife, Nancy, of Lewisburg; one sister, Virgie Bennett of Bradley; four granddaughters, Susan Treadway Johnson and husband, Joe, of Beckley, Kimberly Treadway Varney and husband, Jeff, of Crab Orchard, Tiffany Bennett of Lewisburg, and Candice Bennett of Lewisburg; two grandsons, Robert Bennett and wife, Beverly, of Shady Spring, and Jeffery Bennett of Mount Hope.

She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and a special and dear Friend, Carolyn Martin of Mount Hope.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Maple Fork Baptist Church, on Wednesday, May 9, 2007.

Services will be on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Maple Fork Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Lee Barley officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Mrs. Bennett’s family expresses a special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their care.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley WV 25801, or Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley WV 25802.

Grandsons and men of the church will serve as pallbearers.
