William ‘Bill’ Webb Jr.

GREER, S.C. — William “Bill” Tilden Webb Jr., 78, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Glen Ferris, he was the son of the late William T. Webb Sr. and Nancy Thompson Webb.

He was a retired employee of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran. Mr. Webb was a member of United Methodist Church of Fayetteville, attended Kaymoor Community Church in Fayetteville, was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 57 in Fayetteville, American Legion Post No. 149 and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Carte Webb; a daughter, Pamela G. Lively of Greer; two brothers, Marshall K. Webb of Smithers and Daniel Webb of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a sister, Carol Jean Santoro of Cos Cob, Conn.; a granddaughter, Amanda and her husband, Mark Thompson; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Lindsey “Cole” Thompson and Ryleigh Nicole Thompson.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wood Mortuary, Poinsett Street, Greer, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Holt.

Visitation will be 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the mortuary.

The family is at the home of Mr. Webb’s daughter, 22 Lantern Lane (Carriage Walk), Greer, SC 29651.

Ruth Evelyn Crawford Williams

LINDSIDE — Ruth Evelyn Crawford Williams, 87, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Junior E. ‘J.E.’ Christian

PINEVILLE — Junior E. “J.E.” Christian, 80, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital following a sudden illness.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Christian family.

Ila Marie Cook

Ila Marie Cook, 70, of Eccles, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Larry R. Cremeans

SUMMERSVILLE — Larry R. Cremeans, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, in the VA Medical Center at Beckley.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Walker Memorial Park at Summersville with the Rev. Nelson Harris officiating.

The Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville is in charge of arrangements.

Harlow Warren Denny

RAINELLE — Harlow Warren Denny, 89, formerly of Huntington, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005.

He was born Feb. 10, 1916 in Cabell County, a son of the late Homer M. Denney and Lora M. Foster Denney.

Mr. Denny was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet. He retired from West Virginia Electric Supply in 1981.

He was preceded in death by his wife Freda Mae Runyan Denny and his brother Donald T. Denney.

Survivors include one son Allen R. Denny and wife Nancy of Rainelle. Also, three grandchildren Christopher Denny, Timothy Denny and Sarah E. Denny Allen; five great-grandchildren Duncan Denny, Logan Denny, Matthew Denny, Caleb Denny, and Ginger Allen.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Woodmere Memorial Gardens in the Abbey Remembrance Chapel in Huntington, conducted by Pastor James Jobe of Hebron Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 26.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by East Huntington V.F.W. Post #9738.

Gloria Ford

HINTON — Gloria Ford, 51, of 214 Third Ave., died at Summers County Hospital in Hinton on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, following a sudden illness.

Vivian Harper

On Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, Vivian Harper went to see her Lord and Saviour in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. She was in her 82nd year.

Born Vivian Ilus Bullock on Aug. 8, 1923, in Duff, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late John and Emma Davis Bullock.

Vivian spent her childhood in Tennessee; she and her late husband, James, settled in Baltimore, Md., where she resided for 34 years. While in Maryland she worked for Glen L. Martin Industries retiring from Westinghouse with 20 years of service. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Baltimore. Vivian came to Beckley in 1984 settling on Oscar Avenue. Working as a caregiver for the elderly, Vivian was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God on Sunset Avenue. In her leisure time she enjoyed working in her flowers, gardening, making dolls and bears and sewing in general. She was a much loved mother and a precious Nanny to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The last survivor of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Westlake Harper, in September of 1993; brothers, Fred, Everett, and Charlie; and a sister, Ethel.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin Harper and his wife, Patty, of Beckley and Wesley Leon Harper of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Carol, Steven, and Donna Harper, Michael Becker, Sharon Harper and Susan Crews; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Helen Green and Joshua and Seth Crews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. John Jordan officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of the services.

Pallbearers will be members of the Calvary Assembly of God.

Donations of sympathy may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, P.O. Box 631047, Baltimore, MD 21263-1047, in honor of Sharon Harper. The family may be contacted at the home of Marvin and Patty Harper, 104 Dutch Lane, Beckley.

LESTER — Estle Harrison, 80, of Old Lester Highway, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, in a Beckley hospital following an extended illness.

Betty Harvey

SUN HILL — Betty Harvey, 69, departed this life Dec. 22, 2005, following a long illness.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

U.S. Army Sgt. Brian C. Karim

U.S. Army Sgt. Brian C. Karim, 22, husband of Rachel Lasley Karim, father of 2-year-old Janessa Karim of Nimitz, and son of Vera and Garland Adkins of Talcott, was killed in action in a roadside bombing on Tuesday, Dec., 13, 2005, northwest of Baghdad, Iraq. Brian was a member of Taskforce Baghdad charged with security in Baghdad and surrounding areas.

Brian was born Jan. 27, 1983, in Summers County, and was a 2001 graduate of Summers County High School. He was an avid outdoorsman, and attended the First Baptist Church in Hinton.

Besides his immediate family, he is survived by one brother, Steven Gill of Talcott; one sister, Shannon Gill of Talcott; father- and mother-in-law Robbie and Susie Lasley of Nimitz; brother-in-law Aaron Lasley of Ft. Sill, Okla.; and sisters-in-law Mandy Seigler of Nimitz and Kelli Gill of Hinton.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Gary Adkins officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the Gill Family cemetery near Hinton.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Ray Francis Kersey

Ray Francis Kersey, 81, of White Sulphur Springs passed away on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs with the Rev. Brent Sturm, O.S.L., officiating. The family will receive their friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest J. Neely, Sr.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Mr. Ernest J. Neely, Sr., 84, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, in Philadelphia.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Tioga United Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Burial was in Philadelphia.

G. Frank Page, Jr. Funeral Home, Philadelphia, was in charge of arrangements. Submitted by Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor.

Lorene Virginia Phillips Shumate Collier

Lorene Virginia Phillips Shumate Collier, age 83, of Beckley, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2007.

Born May 13, 1923, she is the daughter of the late Billie and Viola Phillips.

Lorene loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed needlework and sewing. Lorene attended the First Christian Church of Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband Wanus Shumate and second husband John D. Collier; daughter Glora Shumate Martin Bryant; son John D. Collier II; great-grandson Steven Cole; and brother Bobby Phillips.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters Joyce Phipps and husband Dallas of Beckley, Alice S. Johnson of Hopewell, VA; son Richard Collier and wife Mamie of N. Wilkesboro, NC; sister Shirley Pendry of Powhatan, VA; brother Gene Phillips and wife Betty of Picayune, MS; 10 grandchildren, Greg Phipps and wife, Mary, of Beckley, Debra Byrant and husband, Dan, of Hickory, NC, Diane Lilly of Hurricane, Melanie Urkuhart and husband, Joey, of Athens, Karen Johnson of Jacksonville, NC, Joel Johnson of Hopewell, VA, Aaron Collier and wife, Kristin, of New Orleans, LA, Alex Collier of North Wilkesboro, NC, Kristy Jerrell and husband, Luke, of Terre Haute, IN, and John D. Collier, III of Terre Haute, IN; nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Randy Smithson officiating.

Friends gathered with the family one hour prior to the service.

Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25801.

ANSTED — Cecil V. Conway, 84, of Ansted, died Sunday morning, Jan. 14, 2007, at the Sunbridge Pine Lodge in Beckley, following a long illness.

James T. Dorsey

NETTIE — James T. Dorsey, 70, of Leivasy Road, died Saturday night, Jan. 13, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, following a sudden illness.
