Carl Eugene Malcolm Sr.

Carl Eugene Malcolm Sr. of Sophia, passed away at the Beckley VA Medical Center on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, after a long illness.

Born at Sullivan, on Aug. 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Lula Thomas Malcolm.

Carl was proud to serve his country by being in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving primarily in the Philippines.

Carl was also proud and privileged to have worked for NASA and the Boeing programs in Seattle, Washington; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Huntsville, Alabama; and his associations with Dr. VonBron.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Lawrence Malcolm of Seattle, Wash.

Those left to cherish and enjoy his memory include, sons, Carl E. Malcolm “Gene” and wife, Kit, and grandchildren, Bryce Durrett and Ellie Grace of Simpsonville, S.C., John Malcolm and wife, Tina and grandchildren, Cody and Katy of Clemmons, N.C.

The mother of his sons, Mildred Malcolm of Beckley; brothers, Benjamin “Ben” Malcolm of Knoxville, Tenn., Paul Malcolm and wife, Romona of Oak Hill, Robert Malcolm and wife, JoAnn of Beckley; sisters, Gladys Ford Creager of Beckley, and Betty McCoy of Mabscott; and a host of wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff and members of the ECU at the Beckley Veterans Hospital; again thank you for your friendship.

Carl also loved to travel throughout southern W.Va, for as West Virignia truly was home to him.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Virginia S. ‘Ginny’ McCallister

ALDERSON — Virginia S. “Ginny” McCallister, age 77, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor, Va., following a short illness.

John C. McDermott

NEOLA — John C. McDermott, 82, died at his residence 5:30 a.m. Jan. 12, 2007, following an extended illness.

Born at Neola Sept. 5, 1924, he was the son of the late W.L. and Bessie Furtig McDermott. He was a member of the Alvon Presbyterian Church at Neola, a retired farmer having lived in Greenbrier County his entire life. He was a 50-year member of Alleghany Lodge No. 136 AF and AM.

He served in World War II in the unit known as Murrills Mauders receiving his discharge Feb. 11, 1946. Mr. McDermott was recognized with the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Emblem, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, European-Africian-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Honorable Service Lapel Button (World War II), Marksman Badge with Pistol and Rifle Base.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Phil and Robert McDermott and two sisters, Viva M. Lowe and Ada McDermott.

He is survived by a sister, Lyda Calhoun of Sandstone, several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at the Wildmeadow Baptist Church with the Rev. Lowell O’Dell officiating.

Family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Anthony Creek Fire and Rescue’ in care of Judy Young, HC 70, Box 10, Neola, WV, 24986 or to HospiceCare, 540 North Jefferson Street, Box 7, Suite D, Lewisburg, WV, 24901.

His request to donate to the University of West Virginia Anatomical at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine was honored by his family.

Erma Lillian Arthur Stafford

KOPPERSTON — Erma Lillian Arthur Stafford, peacefully went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 19 days, after one week stay at Heartland of Beckley following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born March 26, 1935, in Wickham of Raleigh County she was the youngest child of the late Guide and Zettie Dawson Arthur.

Erma and Kenny were married Aug. 4, 1951, she then moved to Wyoming County with her husband to raise their family, she enjoyed flowers, birds, quilting, camping, fishing and knitting.

Giving her life to the Lord at an early age she rededicated her life the same day that four members of her family accepted Jesus Christ in 1970. She was a member of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church where she was very active as Co-Director of BYF, Assistant Church Clerk, Wednesday Night Children’s Bible Teacher, Adult Women’s Class Secretary and loved helping with Vacation Bible School. Erma’s favorite Bible verses were Proverbs 31:10-31 which speaks of the Virtuous Woman these verses were very evident in the life she lived. She was also retired as head cook for Wyoming County Board of Education after 12 years of service. When her children were young she was involved with the Girl and Boy Scouts of America.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan W. Tilley on July 17, 1985; and two sisters, Freda M. Lares and Flora A. Stafford.

Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband and caregiver of 55 years, Kenneth J. Stafford; a son, Randall Stafford and his wife, Sue of Oceana; three daughters, Lillian Tilley and her husband, Bill of Eccles, Marsha Sparks and her husband, Tom of Oceana and Sandra Solacz and her husband. Mitch of Prosperity; eight grandchildren, Suzanne and Anthony Tilley, Patrick and Jared Stafford, Crystal Brown, Jill Sparks, Anna and Tricia Solacz; seven great-grandchildren, Jenny, A.J., Olivia and William Tilley, Jasmine Stafford, Destiny Brown and Jaylissa Gardner; three brothers, Guide “Slick” Arthur of Ona, Bill Arthur and his wife, Doris of Daniels, and Jessie Arthur and his wife, Joyce of Shady Springs; a half sister, Brenda Mitchell of Maryland; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A celebration of Erma’s life will 7 p.m. today, Jan. 16, 2007, at Toneda Missionary Baptist Church.

Casketbears will be grandson and sons-in-law.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of the service today at the church.

Graveside services will be noon Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Those wishing to attend graveside service needs to meet the family at the cemetery.

Herman Sampson Stanley, II

COLCORD — Herman Sampson Stanley II, passed away suddenly at his favorite place in the world with his favorite camping buddy Lil Sampson and his dogs Decon, Pup and Toby by his side.

Sampson will be missed by many. He had a great love for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and spent much of his time in the mountains. He was the kind of man you were lucky to call a friend.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 30 years, Cheryl Stanley; his daughter, Crystal Holstein and husband, Aaron; two grandchildren, Nick and Taylor of Racine; daughter ,Tara Massey and husband, J. R., and two grandchildren, Courtney and Ashley of Fostersville; son, Herman Sampson Stanley III and wife, Sara, and three grandchildren, Logan, Lil Sampson and Chase of Colcord. His mother, Doris Stanley of Colcord; sister, Ethel Petry and husband, Roy, of Fairdale; brother, Gary Stanley of Hickory N.C.; his mother-in-law, Betty Hill of Dorothy, brother-in-laws, Ralph (Peanut), Mike, Richard, Paul, George and Bobby; sister-in-law, Teresa Meador and husband, Blaine.

He had several special friends including his little buddy, Billy Jarrell, who considered Sampson a Pa-Paw; Bob Smith, who he loved like a brother; Gary Mullens, who was his camping buddy; his good friends Glen Duncan, Kenny Whitt, Harlow Toler and Jason Estep whom he loved like a son. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Sampson Stanley; father-in-law, Ralph Hill; and his beloved grandmother, Linnie Williams.

A memorial service will be held at the Pentacostal Freedom Church of Ameagle on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Jackie Clinton Stover

Jackie Clinton Stover, age 71, of Sophia, died Sunday Jan. 14, 2007 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Born Sept.19, 1935 at Cranberry, WVa., he was the son of the late Clinton and Lillian Hamilton Stover.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by a son James Fitz Stover

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Glenna Stover; two daughters, Jackie Sue Logan of Beckley and Libby Meadows and her husband, Russell, of Shady Spring; four stepsons, Gary Lee Scott of Huntington, Brian K. Lambert of Coal City, George Joseph Lambert of Sophia and Michael R. Lambert and his wife, Amanda, of Shady Spring; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Leonard Joe Atkins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Robert Cecil Pettry

FAIRDALE — Robert Cecil Pettry, 87, of Fairdale, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

He was born Dec. 28, 1919, at Montcoal, a son of the late Sidney and Almeda Gunnoe Pettry.

He was a member of UMWA, and a veteran having served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Neva Marie Pettry; sisters, Bessie Hall, Pink Woodroom, Manzy Dilworth, and Manie Beckner; and brothers, Charley Bird Pettry, Bill Pettry, and Elmer Pettry.

Those left to cherish his memory include his companion of 16 years, Mary Ann Allen; daughters, Sarah Burnette of Rock Creek, Patricia Gunnoe of Fredericksburg, Va., Linda Anderson of Rock Creek, Brenda Hockaday of Stafford, Va., Sue Briston of Heartland Nursing Home, Beckley, and Barbara Buzzard of Zellwood, Fla.; sons, Roger Pettry of Wirtz, Pa., and Randy Pettry of Fairdale; a sister, Martha Browning of Twin Populars; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with Rev. Donnie Russell officiating. Singers will be the Rock Creek Community Singers. Interment will follow in the Pineview cemetery, Orgas, with military graveside rites by VFW Post # 5578 Madison.

Visitation will be today from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Erma Lillian Arthur Stafford

KOPPERSTON — Erma Lillian Arthur Stafford, 71, of Kopperston, departed this life Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Heartland of Beckley, following a long illness.

A celebration of her life will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Toneda Missionary Baptist Church. Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of the service on Tuesday. Graveside services will be noon Wednesday at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Norman Wayne Nelson

CLOVIS, N.M. — Norman Wayne Nelson, 60, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 21, 1945, at Dothan, son of the late Herman and Belle Bragg Nelson. He married Layne Kegel, Sept. 7, 1974, in North Miami, Fla.

Mr. Nelson moved to New Mexico from Pennsylvania 24 years ago. He was service manager for Watson Motor Co., and previously for Richard Barton. He was an avid collector of baseball and football cards and coins. He loved his children and was licensed in Curry City as a foster parent.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Sue (Nelson) Hammond.

Survivors include his wife Layne; a son Matthew and wife Wendy of Roswell, N.M.; two daughters, Julie Nelson of Clovis, and Lisa Nelson of Canton, Ohio. Also, three grandchildren, Marc, Mathew and Mikel Nelson; a brother Gary Nelson of Oak Hill; two sisters, Nancy Sumney and Dixie Arbogast of Canton, Ohio; a mother-in-law, Shirley Kegel, and brother-in-law, Don Kegel, of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Lawn-Haven Memorial Garden with the Rev. Dick Doss officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were friends, family and co-workers.

FANROCK — Linda Newcomb, 48, departed this life Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston.

Opal J. Reed

PINEVILLE — Opal J. Reed, 68, passed away Dec. 22, 2005.

Born Jan. 30, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Maudie Robertson.

She is preceded in death by her husband Freeman Reed; two daughters Phyllis Mills and Connie Reed; four grandchildren Gregory and Teresa Cadle, Justin Wilson and Levi Reed; two brothers Charlie Robertson and Junior Robertson.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include her companion Carl Y. Reed; seven daughters, Mae Graham and husband Clyde of Rhodell, Debbie Smith and companion Mike Friend of Beartown, Sandy Shrewsbury and husband Alvie of Barker’s Ridge, Charlotte Cadle and husband Chuck of Amigo, Lisa Mullis and husband Jimbo of Keystone Heights, Fla., Mary Wilson and companion Jeff Whitley of Mocksville, N.C., Wanda Manning and husband J.T. of Fisher; two sons David Reed of Amigo and Chris Reed and wife Carroll of Corinne; two sisters Alma Graham of Rhodell and Faye Lusk of Basin; a brother Ralph Robertson of Egeria. Also, 27 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 147 Virginia St., Sophia. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
